[Q] Wifi Channel 13? Can't use it. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't seem to see my Wi-Fi AP (channel 13) on my new Nexus 5. It was set up as English UK, so shouldn't have any problem accessing channels 12 and 13.
This is the display in WiFi Analyser on my Galaxy Nexus:

You can see why I picked channel 13. And this is the same location with the Nexus 5:
Have I missed something? I can't find anything in the wifi settings regarding a region setting. Any help appreciated.

When multiple access points (or other WiFi devices) are on the same channel, they notice each other and coordinate to not transmit at the same time. This is to avoid interference with each other. If two devices transmit at the same time, generally both packets are lost and both get transmitted.
Now, when you put them on overlapping but different channels, they often do not coordinate. But still, when to transmit at the same time, the packets are lost. Happens a lot more without coordination, though.
There is a four-channel setup which doesn't overlap, or at least the overlap is small enough, but everyone would need to switch to it...
IOW, you'd probably get better performance on 6 or 11. And your neighbors would too, were you to switch. A win for everyone. Do some speed and latency (ping) tests to be sure.
Or move to the 5 GHz frequencies, which are less crowded and better blocked by walls.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate what you are saying and that may solve the problem from the other direction but it doesn't explain what I'm seeing.
Has anyone else seen this odd behaviour with their Nexus 5?

If I remember right the nexus 4 didn't recognise channel 13 either Max was channel 12 unless on 5Ghz.

Thanks for the info.
A friend's Windows 8 tablet had the same issue a while back, and at the time I remember thinking, "That's a bit crap", and wondering why it would not function to spec. I wrote it off as a Microsoft-ism. Shame to see that sort of approach wander over to Google and the Nexus line of products.

Hi - exactly the same for me. My Nexus 5 does not see channel 13 at all - my Nexus 4 (and 7 for that matter) sees it fine!
Both set up English UK - but the Nexus 5 just will not recognise channel 13 at all... Weird.

It is likely by design and I would not be surprised if the updates for the N7 and other devices start blocking it out. Thanks to US FCC regulations, overseas might not be able to use them.

I'm having the same issue. I had my AP setup on channel 13. I had no issues using it on my laptops, SGS III, SGS 4, Samsung Note 10.1 but when I fired up my Nexus 5 I did not see my network.
After few days figuring out why only this one network is not visible I finally changed the channel to 11 and it is working fine. But it is not solution so I kept digging and I have found out that is going on. At least in my situation.
Channels 12 and 13 are allowed to be used in Europe and Japan only. I'm in Poland, phone is from German distribution so I thought that it should be not as issue. Apparently phone distribution/origin is not the case.
I was testing it without the SIM card since I was planning to set it up completely before moving from my SGS3 to it. Once SIM card has been inserted phone recognized it is in Europe and channel 13 became available! Pretty weird for me but looks like it is working that way...

Great post artiwal. After I put the sim in, channel 13 networks suddenly become available. Thank you!

[Q] samsung galaxy mini wifi issue

hey guys .
I bought a Samsung galaxy mini ( gt-s5570 ) ,its good except the WiFi .
It can work with my home network for only one time ,if i try to connect again it won't allow me .
I've tried (Nokia N81-Nokia N82-Nokia N8- Samsung Star- Samsung Star 2- Samsung galaxy SII- Samsung Note- Apple Iphone4s) and all of these devices works perfectly with my router ,so i think its the phone not the router .
the router is a Linksys WAG54G2 with latest firmware update version : V1.00.19 ,I've tried all type of security and i even disabled it without any luck .
I've been searching Google for over a month now without any success but I've noticed that this problem happens with many other handsets .
to fix it i have only two options :
1- restart the router ( which is inconvenient ) .
2- factory reset the phone ( can't live with an empty phone 4ever ) .
I tried everything on phone settings and on router settings with no success at all ,I even tried apps from android market to fix WiFi but it didn't work .
any help will be appreciated ,thanks guys.
Here is some pics stating the problem

there must be some hope !!!
does anyone know if it is a problem with hardware or software
I've been searching all over the internet for about 4 months now and tried all suggested work around but no luck at all ,how come such a perfect OS like android has such a stupid bug and its not only on Samsung mini its on many other handsets .How can't Google get a permanent fix for this problem and why everyone around the world is so quiet about this problem just because android is so good to be criticized .I was convinced that android is the best OS but now i don't know anymore .
i won't give up
and i'll wait for a solution to the most stupid bug on the most so called successful mobile OS of this time

Unfortunately i didn't find any solution. But i found out that this problem is only on the stupid android so if the WiFi usage is very important to you i'd advise you to switch to another OS.
Thanks for your reply.
It is just on galaxy mini.
I use the same wifi on note 2 and galaxy S advanced.
There should be somthing wrong in driver or device settings.

I didn't mean all android handsets have this problem, but what i meant is that this exact problem only appears on some android handsets. I totally agree with you that it must be a driver issue but as long as i've searched the websites, only android os handsets suffer from this driver issue. You can search google and you will be amazed how many android users searching for a fix for this problem.

I already stated that i can fix it by restarting my router but that's not a solution especially when i have to do it every 2 hours or so.
I had this same problem with my Mini. It's a kernel problem. It solved when I upgraded to Gingerbread through Kies.

Even after upgrading to gingerbread the problem still exist unfortunately. The most annoying thing with this problem is that its not under warranty. I've sent my device to samsung branch in my city two times and their response was "The WiFi is working just fine". I don't care what problems appear in the product as long as the manufacturer covers them under warranty.
Do you have Dlink router?
Maybe it is a router issue, as my wife's Galaxy S Advance has the problem with the same Wifi. It never had such a problem with other routers.
(I have not tested thr mini with the other routers yet.)

[Q] Wifi Roaming

Has anyone issues with WiFi Roaming?
I have 3 APs in my house (actually there are 4, but the 4th is in the basement and is completely far away of the other 3). Two are TPLink WR1043ND and the other is an Apple TimeCapsule. The three of them are configured with the same SSID and WPA2 password. The channels are 3-8-13, so there is no overlapping between them (I didn't start on 1 because there is a strong WiFi signal from a neighbor in that channel). Also the TimeCapsule has 5GHz band with the same name and password on channel 48.
I think everything is correct, and so does my iPad think as it correctly roam between the different APs. But nor my Nexus 5 or my wife's Nexus 4 will roam. Obviously, if I disconnect WiFi and then reconnect, it will go to the strongest signal AP (either 2.4GHz or 5.0GHz).
Am I the only one with WiFi roaming issues?
Give each router (and each band, if dual) a different SSID. If it's still not connecting properly to the strongest signal, you can try Wifi Jumper on the Play Store.

Frankly it should work better on the 5GHz band since it's not as crowded. One thing that you might want to look at is if you have wideband turned on. It doesn't effect mine but it my not play right across all the different AP's you have. You know the 20/40 Configuration. If your not familiar with it. It's where the AP will burst from say just channel one through channel six. This allows cards to talk more without talking over each other or waiting for a spot. However different AP's do this different. Could be anything but that is where I would start. There also no real 2'3:4'5. It's channal 1-6 and 6-12. So see if channel six is available without overlapping someone else's AP.

I would change all my AP's to six, or 12 if you can since you said 1 was taken. Best yet download inSSIDer then do a proper wifi scan.

My router's (Asus RT-AC66U) channel bandwidth settings have the following options: 20, 40, 80, and 20/40/80.
Just curious why you wouldn't use 1-6-11 and use channel 11 closest to the area where you have strong signal on channel 1. Even if you aren't interfering with your other APS directly with your equipment you are still going to get interference on channel 3 from that channel 1 ap I would imagine.

This is the intended behavior of WiFi. It's more efficient to remain associated to an existing AP than to reassociate with a new AP each time one comes within range if the signal from original AP is still adequate.
You might try enabling the option to avoid poor connections but I doubt it will help provide the roaming function you are looking for.
channel 36 seems to be the only 5 Ghz that the note 2 works right on. My nexus 5 doesn't seem to care. If your using more than 1 AP then you want them all on the same channel and same ssid/password . People start having issues when they mix different gear into their wifi setup like this one. With the same gear, ssid, password things should work fine if your not running ontop of someone else. The cut off point of interference is around 60 dBm or lower. if your wifi is walking on the same channel with that much bleed over from someone else's wifi then you need to change channels. Kill the wideband and switch it back to 20. or simply go the 5Ghz route. As far as devices trying to to stay with the original AP while roaming that really only applies to different ssids which is the true meaning of roaming. Staying within your own ssid and same channel isn't really roaming even if your moving from one AP to the next inside your own wifi network layout.

[Q] OPO flashed on CM11s - Mobile Data issues

[/ATTACH]Hello my friends,
I really need your help now. Since the Oneplus One is so new there are only few people having experience with the smartphone and it's Problems. I searched the whole Internet but dit not find anyone with the OPO who has the same Problem as me..
My OPO is the chinese Version and i flashed it without PC on CM11s.
But I found that my Smartphone has got no mobile Internet and also I am not able to call someone.
After I saw this I flashed the phone two more times, but with my PC and fastboot. I used the Images here: https: //cyngn.com /products /oneplusone/
Once I flashed my phone with PC and fastboot I got mobile data sometimes for about one or two minutes, after that it breaks down.
My APN's are the same with my Provider.
I tried to solve this Problem for the whole weekend, I now even consider selling the phone again..
It would be really really nice if someone is able to help me!
Best regards,

hi
I had a similar problem. I had a sim card trimmed with scissors and was too loose.
I replaced the card with a new one.
A problem, however, remained. Sometimes I can not call, sometimes not the Internet. It looks like something crashed and helps only restart.
You tried to upload the "modem chack"?
I have the same problem. I hope it is not something with hardware.
I don't know... could you check production date on the box?
Sounds like a kernel issue, did you flash the right one?

Mate 9 wifi hotspot issues and Latest Firmware version?

HI,
using my Mate 9 as hotspot my iPad (2017) connect to the Mate and then it disconnect it's self in 2 seconds , it reconnects and disconnect again over and over.
After struggling for weeks i found on the Apple support forum that a lot of Mate users have the same problem and the solution would be update the phone to the latest firmware version.
I run on a EUROPE stock ROM (MHA-L29C432B194) not rooted device is my FW the latest available or there is a newer one?
I have not so much experience with Huawei ROM so i would like to know where is possible to find a list of all FW (the link on XDA does not work).
Tank You for the help!
Version 194 is the latest one if you wanna try other firmwares, by this I mean older ones try Firmware
Finder from play store, search the forums on how it works.
I don't have this problem with my MHA-L29C432B194. Even with older firmwares I have been regularly using it as hotspot for different types of apple (iphone 5, 6 and ipad 2, pro) and some android gadgets. The connection is always stable.
Do you have some VPN or Firewall software installed?
Btw, I don't believe the Apple support too much. They could as well just be clueless and perhaps wanted to simply shake you off.
I have done many test and the iPad works perfectly with any wifi network/hotspot except for the Mate9.
I Have:
Downgraded iPad's firmware to the 10.3 from the 11.0.1
Checked operator APN configuration
Tried Mate 9 factory reset but dosen't help.
Connected the iPad to an hotspot wifi created trough an MATE S and it works perfectly.
I moved my SIM to test it in another phone (note 4) and tethering/hotspot works perfectly.
The strange thing is that the Mate 9 hotspot works perfectly whit other device except for the iPad so I'm wondering if there is some kind of hardware issue.
Sharing the internet connection trough the Bluetooth works perfectly but obviously the speed connection isn't fast as the wi-fi hotspot mode.
This is the link to the apple support forum where other users talk about this problem: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8081358?start=0&tstart=0
I hope it can give some clue to those having the same problem.
My firmware it's the latest so i think i can just wait and hope in the next firmware.
Are you running the hotspot in 2.4GHz or 5GHz? There have been other reports of devices (not just Apple's) struggling to connect to the Mate's 5GHz hotspot.
Give 2.4GHz a shot, anywhere between channels 1 to 11.
Having said that I don't any issues connecting my MacBook Air (macOS 10.13) to my Mate 9 (MHA-L29C432B194) in the 5GHz band.

I have the same hotspot bug on firmware 194 on my Mate 9, was OK before this. I´ve been reading that the honor 8 got the same bug after the latest firmware update as well here in Finland.
Hello, I had the same issue as you. In fact I called Apple Support to try and resolve the issue.
After a lot of trial and error, it turns out that the Mate 9 was the culprit after updating to L19C636B188.
Fortunately for me, there was another update L19C636B189 which resolved the issue.
So the only solution for you is try to contact Huawei to let them know that there's a problem, OR rebrand to a different version.
Just posting this to let you know that you are not the only one experiencing this. I actually went to the Apple Store and try all their devices to connect to my Mate 9 hotspot, and all connects/disconnects continuously.

Only 2-custom ROMs was able to fix this for me (tested and confirmed from me as at the time of this post).

Same problem here. I was going crazy over this. I'm so glad I found this thread because I was about to throw my ipad against a wall.
i have same problem with honor 9 lite, and my friend having 7x also has that problem, hotspot turns on and off when device is locked. I think it is due to some battery saver or maybe a bug which huawei didnt noticed. Almost all honor devices has that problem.

Xtrons PX6 unable to connect to wi-fi hotspot

Hello everyone,
I'm having a problem with Xtrons PQ89UNVIP – MTCE PX6 unit running on Android 9 and Hal9k Mod V4 with all OTA-Updates in a Golf Mk6.
Earlier, this unit occasionally had some difficulties connecting to the hotspot from any phone (tested with various devices) shortly after starting the car, especially during hot weather. Usually a reboot helped and after that it connected to my hotspot normally. I complained to Xtrons about it and got a new wi-fi antenna from them, but swapping it didn't solve my problem. Not feeling like sending the whole device back, I decided to accept it and live with it, as it was not a big problem for me because it occurred quite rarely.
However, a few days ago the issue escalated, the head unit does not want to connect to the hotspot from my phone at all. It sees the device's network, makes an attempt to connect to it, but it fails. At first glance it looks exactly the same as the problem I had before (continuous Connecting -> Saved, see the video below), except that a reboot doesn't help, the weather/temperature doesn't matter, and it connects normally to hotspots from other phones. I also tried to do it in Safe mode.
My phone is a 3-week-old OnePlus Nord 2 5G with Android 11. Until the last few days, the hotspot worked perfectly. I tried changing the name and password of the hotspot, resetted network settings completely on both devices, tried both 2,4 and 5 GHz band and various other options. Once shortly after renaming the hotspot, it was able to connect to it, but a few seconds later the connection was dropped. Other devices can normally connect to the hotspot from my phone.
Video showing the issue:
Before I restore the device to factory settings and have to install and set everything up again (which doesn't guarantee me a solution either), I would like to know if anyone has an idea what else I could do to fix this.
I would be very grateful for any willingness to help, I am desperate because this unit without internet connection loses most of its functions I used

Take a tooth pick and tick the micro switch on your unit which is named with RST.

Thanks for the tip. But it seems that pressing the RES button has the same function as Restart (reboot) option from the screen menu I have used so far:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
So obviously still nothing has changed regarding my issue
