Sprint UICC Sim card [Solved] - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know where we can reliably get the UICC Sim card to activate on the Nexus 5. I called a local store and they said they don't have them. Don't seem to see it on Sprint store anywhere either. Apparently this is required to activate for Nexus 5 Sprint and get 4G working.

They just think they don't have them, but they do. The Nexus uses a mini (not nano) UICC card - same as the Galaxy S4 and perhaps some other models.

Got mine ordered. Cheers!

won't work on SERO or any other employee account.

Just ordered my SIM as well. (used that link above)
Wow it was easy. Glad I got someone that knew what the heck it was and why I needed it.

eCare Chat, but then many were told that they won't get you SIM until after the device release on the 8th.

For the record, this is a solution only if you already have a Sprint account. If you are planning to use the phone on a Sprint MVNO, you will need to resort to other methods to get the "SIM".

Yes, that's my situation. Two reps have told me the product is on back order. One rep told me that it is sitting in a warehouse, but they can't ship it to me until the official Sprint launch on the 8th.

Ive tried all routes, and i couldn't get one over the phone or online. If you are lucky, and hopefully i will be tomorrow, you can go to a sprint store, and request a sim for HTC one or SGS4 and those sim cards will work for us on the n5.
you can go here and read some stories of how people did this. http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/pWGKq9bZfB4[126-150-false]

This worked for me. The person on the chat didn't even act as if it was an uncommon question. Though I have a regular plan and not a SERO or anything else. He didn't ask about my plan at all though but he could see my info I am sure. I did not have any luck whatsoever calling 4 sprint stores around me. ALl of them had no clue what I was even talking about or tried telling me Sprint is CDMA... I think actually going into a store would work better because then you would most likely be able to speak to the actual repair techs who know that Sprint phones do in fact use SIM or UICC cards. The sales people who answer phones seem clueless as far as the tech. One thing is that multiple customer services reps online have stated you should go to a Sprint store that is a repair center and is owned by sprint and not one of the stores that say "Sprint by ASW" or whatever.

I have an order from 11/3 that just got processed on the 11th. By the time they got around to processing it 8 days later... They were out f stock and said that I would receive one in the mail when in stock.. likely in the next 10-20 days.
Have you received your sim card by now?

I'm on SERO P account and I just walked into a Sprint Store and they gave me a Card which they scanned to account but did not place in my phone...so they activated the SIM and let me actually activate the phone.

I got impatient and bought one at Best Buy for $30.

Found a store finally that had the sim. Wouldn't give it to me since I did not have the device on hand to activate it.

Nexus 5 on Sprint MVNO's?

Now that we know the Nexus 5 can be activated for use on Sprint, I was curious as to whether we might be able to activate the phone to work on Sprint MVNOs (e.g. Ting, Voyager Mobile). Can anyone tell whether that would be the case?
I plan to get a nexus 5 and use it on ringplus (a sprint mvno) and some people have ordered it to try to activate it. I'm going to wait on the news from them just to be safe.

I'm not sure, but the Nexus 5 is unlocked and can be directly purchased from the Play Store instead of Sprint.

I'll gunea-pig it for you. I bought the phone, and it will be here on Monday. The foreseeable problem that I see will be obtaining an LTE micro sim for sprint, going to go and try to sweet talk a sprint rep into giving me one.

Thanks for the heads up. I will give them a shot first. Texted one of my buddies that work at Best Buy.
Well first up doesn't work directly with their IMEI checker for ring+. Created a support ticket and will let you know what happens.
Ting has already come out and explicitly said that Sprint won't allow it on their network, I presume it will be the same for all Sprint MVNOs.

That declaration was made early on by a Ting employee but they are hedging on it now. NOW, they are saying that they have not got the final word from Sprint yet and don't expect to know anything until after Sprint rolls out the N5 on Nov 8.

From a ring+ rep
"We just contacted Sprint, and unfortunately we confirmed with them that we're not permitted to activate the Nexus 5 or any other Google phone - apparently Google has requested that Sprint not allow us to activate/distribute any Google phones. We apologize for the inconvenience."
*Edit after further research this does not appear to be the case.

Spoke to a dude in a Sprint store in my town and he said that would be no problem to pick up a sim for the Nexus 5 (for free) but they just hadn't received the shipment yet. Hopefully, I can get this working with Voyager Mobile. Unfortunately, everything has to be done over the phone and the two people I've ever spoken to from support never seemed too knowledgeable/friendly I guess I can always switch over to RingPlus, though...
Works on Sprint out of the box but I got a random reboot issue with sprint and had ot go back to AT&T sim. Also you must set the radio to GLOBAL for it to work.

BestBuy / Sprint N5 comes with a locked SIM slot?

I am solving this as we speak, so I will update, but went to BB, bought the N5 (I have my reasons why I bought there, not from Play store)
The box states, software lock is in place to prevent the use with non-Sprint sim cards. Also Sprint brochure in box, and no pin-tray key in the box. In other words, the phone is packaged for Sprint specifically.
I bought it, I will call up Sprint and T-Mobile (which is who I want to use) and see what's up.
Anyone else has info?

I really hope that being simlocked to Sprint doesn't affect Android updates down the line. It shouldn't, because it's technically not a "Sprint variant" of the phone, but you never know.

Wait till you get the phone. For all you know, it may be SIM unlocked like the version from the play store. For other phones like the S4, Sprint does have the 90 day requirement before unlocking it for use with International SIMs.
On the Nexus 5, hopefully, they haven't locked down the US bands (like they do with the S4 and other phones). The play store version is not locked.
The http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2513701 thread shows you how to flash the stock images - but again, no guarantees that it will do the trick till you actually try it out.
I didn't want to risk this, so I just bought from the play store. I asked the play store person if the phone was guaranteed to get timely updates direct from google, and he gave a "Phones purchased from the play store will get timely updates from google" response. I'm guessing it was a canned response, but I do hope that Sprint doesn't cripple the version sold by Sprint/Bestbuy etc.
That's pretty crappy. I'd return it.
No, Flashing the stock image will not remove the SIM lock. The SIM lock is stored in a different place.

Update
Sprint Tech Support confirmed the phone is locked. The problem is that they COULD unlock it, but the phone needs to be activated first. To activate the phone, I have to add it to a plan (a 2 year contract). Without that, they cannot do anything with a "cold" phone. Thus far I got nowhere .. the plan is definitely to return it if they do not budge.
I purchased mine from the Google play store as well.
Why would sprint sell it at a subsidized price of $150 or $50 for new customers without locking it to their network during your 2 year contract.
Also, I bet sprint will only unlock it for international use during the 2 year contract. Just like the iPhone and s4.

Well sure, I understand that with the subsidized phones, but I paid it up front - I paid the full $450 for a Nexus. I wanted an unlocked phone ... it's a bum deal.
I am trying to find out whether a friend of mine could activate it on his account, I get it unlocked, and then we re-activate his iPhone back ... not sure Sprint will go for it.
Ugh .. I just want a Nexus 5 you know? ... and this seemed like a fine way of getting it (My old Captivate died finally for good on Tuesday. and I do not really have $350 just siting around, so the $100 markup was my financing "cost" to get 18 month of payments (I have no interest financing through best buy; my other card has high interest .. it was not a bad financing plan). Ugh .. if only Sprint let me unlock it.
Returned it. will get the tmo version next week. i really wish the wait on play store was shorter. my phone is dead ... waiting is too painful.

I don't think Sprint has any clue what they are talking about. I had a 200 dollar BB giftcard so I went in tonight and purchased a "Sprint" N5 and I don't even have Sprint service Ran by the AT&T store and picked up a micro sim, popped it in and everything is working perfectly. The device is definitely not locked to Sprint. Full LTE data with AT&T without having to configure anything.

I am using one right now with my AT&T sim and everything is working. The device even has an imei number which Sprint phones usually do not have(or at least didn't used to when I had Sprint). They only made one version of the device for North America and it is compatible with Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T.
That is very strange. The T-Mobile did not work. Makes me sad.

I actually went to a corporate store and asked for a sim card for my N5, they gave me one free. Took all of 5 minutes. :good:
Ordered mine on 11/05 thru Sprint Worldwide chat....still no shipping update. Ended up going to the corporate store and getting a sim for the S4, even tho the rep said it won't work for the N5. She was hesitant on giving it to me too,

Trying to join Sprint as a new customer CONFUSION everywhere! Lol

Call Sprint store. Tell me they can't activate a new phone I have to purchase from them. Tell them the phone is unlocked and works on Sprint they said they don't know how to do it.
Call second Sprint store ask for the IMEI number and tell me they can't find a record for it, cant activate it, they are busy sorry goodbye.
Call Corporate office tell me yes I can activate it but this phone does not qualify for a month to month service and even though it's unlocked I will be locked into a 2 year contract as a new customer.
Does that sound right? I only have 14 days to decide if I want to stick with the service? How could I be hit with a penalty for leaving if they have given me nothing up front?

From what I've heard, you can't bring your own phone to sprint's month to month service. You can if you sign a contract though, but you knew that already.

This is your chance to run far away. There are tons of other services that provide better pricing and service than Sprint, unless you're in that 5% of the country that Sprint would get better service, somehow.
It's all because of my job. I work in a large concrete building where there is ZERO AT&T service.
Verizon and Boost Mobile work well, so since Boost uses Sprint towers I was looking to join them.
Can you activate this phone on Boost Mobile? I need another suggestion along those lines.

If you want to use the Sprint network with your Nexus 5, try signing up with Ting.com (a Sprint MVNO). They're very responsive to users and prices are much better than Sprint's. You'll need to order a Sprint SIM from them for $10 unless you can pick one up elsewhere.
It will work on sprint. You have to get a LTE sim card from them. Do not let them tell you otherwise. That's all you need. Pop it in and reboot. I'd call sprint and ask them to send you one.

Would they have to add the MEID for 1x/EVDO or all Nexus 5s in their database already? A prepaid option like Ting may be a good way to go but if you could figure it out how to flash to Page Plus that would be cool too.

none of that is correct. i assume you have a 32gig model. you must remove the last number from the imei and the system will recognize it. you can go on the new month to month framily plan since you are bringing your own device. bringing your own device is the same as purchasing one through the new easy pay program (where you have no contract, just obligated to pay phone off).
Hey and you can join my framily while your at it. Your bill would be $40 a or lower at the base. PM me for details. ?

You didn't buy your N5 from T-mo by any chance, did you? There have been issues with activating N5 purchased from T-mo, onto Sprint because Sprint didn't have those IMEIs loaded into their system (phones purchased from google had that issue for the first few days after launch, but it was quickly addressed. But phones purchased from T-mo reportedly still have the issue)

Tethering VZW

If you go through the set-up process BEFORE you put in a VZW sim, then tethering works out of the box. :good:

Worked just fine for me, setting it up, AFTER I put in my VZW sim.
With unlimited data??? If so, I'll be ordering mine immediately. I've been waiting to hear root was obtained for this very reason.

I see no reason it wouldn't work with unlimited data.

Yes, unlimited data. Works right out of the box.
If I am understanding you right, then you guys didn't have to put a sim in from another phone before activating your phone with the new sim you received from Verizon. If that is the case, that's great. I didn't want to have to cut my micro sim down from my LG G2.
Wow, so the phone has no subscription check right out of the box. That is really good news. Thanks for the info!

No, I had to cut the SIM from my G4. I went to a Verizon store and the little arrogant greeter f***, told me that the phone wasn't authorized for use on Verizon, and they couldn't activate it.
If people are receiving these already, why has no one posted a system dump for devs to start modding?
A sim cutter is only a few bucks on eBay. I have a standard to micro, and a micro to nano, as well as sim adapters to go back up if needed. OR just log into your Verizon account, find a phone that you used previously that took a nano sim, call 611 and tell them you want to go back to it. They'll 2nd day a new nano sim.

I guess I will buy the cutter. I'm just going to tell Verizon I am buying a phone from a friend that requires a nano sim and have them send me one. Kind of hacks me off that Verizon wants people to buy a phone off contract but wants you buy it from them with their bloat. Of course, I can't really say I am surprised.

But what about this?

Droid life is wrong? Verizon is still messing with us? Blasphemy. Red is even getting rid of 2 year contracts and they're still pulling this BS?

Could have just been one employee that didn't know better/didnt care. For best results call 611 and if the 1st level tech can't do it, go to the 2nd level.
I had issues with my first N6 deactivating my sim every time I swapped phones (which I do often). It was a Sprint model and this was before Verizon released their model (so the N6 wasn't in the system). They eventually activated it for me...each time it happened.

How do I capture a system dump?
I am willing to post one to get the development of this phone going.

My bad. I think you'll need root or a custom recovery to pull it. Just sit tight...or try every known root method until one works (maybe)

Verizon does not have the moto x pure on their white list yet.
So those without a nano sim and do not want to try cutting their sim card, this is what I did.
If your account has a device (not apple) with a nano sim, have them use that devices imei to issue you a nano sim. Then when you put that sim into your MXP, will immediately be activated and have LTE.
Was annoying but is one method of activating device.
Tier 2 support at Verizon can manually enter your imei and activate the phone as long as you have a sim. It took me nearly 2 hours to argue my way there, but once I was transferred to a guy who was willing to at least try, he got it working.
For what it's worth, I'm also a prepaid customer who came from an old Moto X 3g phone without a sim. I had ordered a sim from Amazon and it arrived with my phone. I literally cut it to size with my pocket knife, and a template, while sitting on hold.
My prepaid account was zeroed and my plan was changed to the 4g version of my old plan. I then had to pay for the new plan right away, but I was like 2 days from renewal anyway so I didn't care.
My advice to anyone else trying to activate with Verizon right now. Demand tier 2 or a supervisor. Tell them you have purchased an unlocked phone directly from the manufacturer and Tier 2 is the only people who can activate it. Tier 2 will need your imei and sim card numbers then they can do it. My tier 2 guy didn't believe it himself when he got it working, just ask them to try. Also, the phone shows up in myVerizon for me now as a grey box with a model number over it. The phone is in the system, they just have not received the imei numbers beforehand for verification like they do with iphones. So when Tier 1, or the store, tries to enter it in the number comes up invalid. Tier 2 just needs to over ride it.

this is why all big 4 companies are pushing e-Sim technology. The sim is BUILT in and you HAVE to contact your phone provider to activate it. Who can be a c**k tease and say. "Hmmm....you're unlimited?.....you want that phone activated? ehhhhhmmmmmm no. I can "process your request" if you change your plan to a current one that is offered. Do you have any other questions? No? have a nice day.
e-Sim offers NO benefit to the consumer other than taking control away from the consumer.
luckily we won't be seeing it until about the iPhone 7 but samsung is going to use it too..
