Suggestions - affordable tablet with SD - General Topics

Love my Nexus 7 but it just can't keep up with the storage demands of modern games. OTG option is bulky, doesn't allow for simultaneous charging and game compatibility is hit or miss.
I'm looking for something that plays nice with the latest stable CyanogenMod, has built-in SD card slot for extra storage and has similar performance to my Nexus 7. HDMI out would also be a bonus.
Does anyone know of anything - hopefully it won't break the bank?

[APP] My Boy! New Gameboy advance emulator

Hi all there is a new gameboy advance emulator My Boy!
It's not a ripoff but a new developer been testing it and it's quite nice I prefer it over gameboid.
FREE VERSION
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwxLDEsImNvbS5mYXN0ZW11bGF0b3IuZ2JhZnJlZSJd
PAYED VERSION
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDEwMiwiY29tLmZhc3RlbXVsYXRvci5nYmEiXQ..
Features
My Boy! is a super fast emulator to run GameBoy Advance games on the broadest range of Android devices, from very low-end phones to modern tablets. It does more than just emulating the full system. Thanks to the save state system, you can save progress at any time and return back to it instantly. And while enabling fast-forward in game, you can quickly skip the long boring intros/dialogs in RPGs.
• Fastest emulation. Easily get to 60 FPS without frame skips on medium-end devices.
• Excellent game compatibility. Run 90%~95% of games without a problem.
• Fast and complete video emulation (alpha blending, fading, mosaic, etc)
• High-level BIOS emulation. No BIOS file needed.
• IPS ROM patching
• OpenGL rendering backend, as well as normal rendering on devices without a GPU.
• Fast-forward to skip long stories, as well as slow down games to get past a level you cannot in normal speed.
• Save games at any time with screenshot
• Configurable on-screen keypad (multi-touch requires Android 2.0 or later)
• External controllers support, through either the Android native way or input method.
• Well-designed user interface. Seamlessly integrated with the latest Android.
• Create and switch to different key mapping profiles.
• Create shortcuts to easily launch your favorite games from your desktop.
No games are included with this app and you need to obtain yours in a legal way. Place them onto your SD card, and browse to them from within the app.
Going to try this now. Here's hoping its good. I've been using Gameboid as it remains the best out there for now.
VGBA has good compatibility but the UI sucks and is battery heavy.
GBA.emu you would expect to be good but performs very poorly on the PLAY. You get lag every 10-15s with frameskip on, and slow as hell/unplayable with frameskip off.
Edit: Looks and feels suspiciously similar to Gameboid but with a couple of added options and tweaks. Wouldn't surprise me at all if it was the same dev behind it, just under different name
I'd say its good enough to replace my Gameboid install. Also, changing the rendering back-end to Canvas disables the horrible linear effect used on most emulators.
As good as it is..$4.99 seems steep for an emulator..especially considering all you get are save states and up to16x fast forward...ill stick with gameboid for nownow

I agree. Its certainly not cheap by any means but it is at least cheaper than the other comparable alternatives (GBA.emu - $5.50, VGBA - $6.30). Its also good that they offer up a free alternative, albeit with less features. Its a tough sell up against the quality (and free) Gameboid app but I think if they continue with regular updates and as a result make it more compatible/better performance than Gameboid, then it becomes worth it.

Sorry for my bad English. It's not my native language.
I use a 3V card for internet purchases. A disposable Visa basically. Only works online but there are other cards (Swirl card) that you can use in shops, ATM's etc
If this gets Wifi/Bluetooth multiplayer capabilities, then I could consider buying it, in the meantime, Gameboid is my election.

Probably won't be compatible with other out-of-game save states, since all devs implement them in their own way. It supports most in-game save formats.

Update v1.1.0 has been released. The dev seems to have took mine and other peoples suggestions regarding linear filtering. Cheats have now also been added.
Changelog:
* Added cheats support (GameShark/ActionReplay/CodeBreaker)
* Added option "linear filtering" for OpenGL (was forced in previous versions)
* Fixed game reset on certain devices when pressing the POWER button, or getting an incoming call.
I'm puzzled by a detail. MyBoy most definitely has code from Nesoid and similars. Same overlay, same controls. Since Nesoid is GPL-licensed, I think that the code should be released. Anyway, I use it because GameBoid doesn't support touch
controls fully, and it just works. Good job, just take care of compliance.

Do you have any proof of this? not berating you, just curious as to if there is any substance to your claim? Overlay could be explained in that the developer was influenced by an app rather than copied/took code from it.
Anyway, the developer claims to be the core developer of the app so unless this is proven otherwise, in which case you should contact him to challenge him on it, then he doesn't have to release any code.
Not only does the overlay look equal, the configuration options for the controller are almost identical, even their order. Either the dev took code from the open-sourced version, or the dev duplicated every single detail.

[Q] I do need some advice on this phone, thanx in advance

I want to replace my DHD, but Im not sure whether to choose a one x or galaxy note2.
Personally I love the design of one x and im fantastic about its UI, but after so many problem exposed im not so sure now.
galaxy note2 seems like a powerful phone, no interest on its UI but maybe a good phone.
I want to know if the problem with one x on the web is true and how good its performance is. i saw someone in DHD forum go back to DHD from one x, and not sure why.
Sorry for my messy expresson( maybe because im in mess....) but I do need some help
Hi. I do own both a DHD and a HOX. Since I bought a 64gb SD for the DHD and installed ICS on it I felt in love with my DHD again.
Don't get me wrong, HOX is a great phone! It's fast, makes great pictures and so on, but it has no place for an external SD card. I do want to have everything on my phone, from music to videos to games. With my HOX I have to watch carefully it's space.
If I were you, I would buy the galaxy s 3.
Press thanks, if it was helpful.

better than iPhone; you do not need any iTunes like prog to transfer files, you can use OneX int storage as an usb storage as usual, mine is 32gb international model, I had also similar thoughts and hesitations as well at the beginning but this is not really a problem. I can easily transfer my camera shots, videos etc without problem.
The only concern, with my OneX, is wi-fi policy; it goes sleep when screen off, and this turns out a problem if you use it for ex. as remote control for other devices like tv, stereo etc in your home network like me, because reconnection to network is required each time you wake your phone, also the same issue makes streaming music via home network through your sound system unusable, just due to that. Otherwise, if you will not use your phone in that way, no any matters at all.
Note: in some custom roms this is already fixed afaik.

I think that the hox is the best phone on the market. My wife ownz a sensation, which is much better that the desire hd and the one x blows it away! The screen quality has no match and it is really fast. In the initial roms the hox had some problems but with that latest update from HTC everything works great.
I also use a custom rom which makes the one x to fly...
Buy the one that you like, all your options are great phones.
Get a Motorola razr maxx or wait and get a razr maxx hd.
Battery life is almost double, it is made by Google so you will get quick updates and there is an sd card slot.
I wish I knew it existed before I bought my one X.

Google bought Motorola for patents, they aren't in charge of their software updates.
Only Nexus devices get quick updates. No Motorola device (apart for the Xoom which is a Nexus) has got JB yet for example

It really depends on your network provider. I am living here in a deserted place in U.A.E and i haven't face this kind of problems yet.
If you pick One X, i am sure you'll not regret it, besides from its simple and good looking design, the phone itself is a beast, especially if you unlock your phone and install a custom rom, battery life will surely increase as well.

multi-window like on the Galaxy Note 2

If you guys haven't heard or seen, the latest firmware upgrade of the NOTE 2 allows for 2 applications to be on the screen at the same time which means you can interact with them. For example you can have a youtube video playing in one window and searching the web in another window.
I was just wondering, would this feature ever be cooked into a ROM?
The SkyRocket is a powerful device and should be able to handle such a thing.
Would definitely love this I am pretty sure its loaded into the os so I don't think it should be too hard to port it over. Only downpart would be the smaller screen but who cares? I would def use it in the car for my torque app and spotify or navi

Cyanogenmod was considering something like this on ICS with CM9 (see example here) . They were talking about adding a similar service called "Cornerstone" by Onskreen, but the idea was shot down by threats from Google of "consequences" if CM implemented it on any devices that Google supported (see comment to Steve Kondik from Dianne Hackborn here).
I hope this means Google(Android) realized that it was dumb to prevent this as it was an inevitability and CM will now be able to get back to work on implementing it.
I've downloaded the video player from the apps section that allows a floating video window over the top of everything else that came from the s3. Works good.

Recommendations

Just looking for some suggestions.
I have a pc hooked up to my tv now and it's really quite overkill. All we do with it is stream videos from other computers in the house and watch Netflix.
I'm sure these little android stick things are powerful enough to do this.
Can anyone recommend a good one to replace my puter? Just need to be able to stream HD Netflix and play videos.
Thanks!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
If it's just videos, probably any of the dual-core devices will do fine. You may need to use an Android 4.1 rom, as the Netflix app is broken on 4.2 for most or all of these sticks.
The mk808 and mk808b are both around $45; the former has slightly better support while the latter has Bluetooth. I have the b model, and it is great for Netflix. (I also use it with Debian in the background to run my IRC connection; it's got plenty of excess power for that plus videos.)

[MOD] Somebody enabled Miracast for Nexus 7

I just found this on GitHub:
Somebody, called Kensuke, enabled Mircast (Streaming screen over WiFi) for the Nexus 7. I don't have mine here so I can't test it.
Maybe somebody can try it out.
It seems that he compiled the complete 4.2.2 ROMs with the addional Miracast Support.

Well this is exciting. Hopefully there's enough demand for it so we won't be limited to just a handful of ROMs to take advantage of this.
I wonder if there is any way a mod like this could be packaged into an Xposed module? Or is it such a fundamental change that it has to be baked into the ROM?
I would test this out if I had a Miracast receiver already. Also I don't want to lose the tethering menu in my current tilapia ROM, so ideally if a ROM had both Miracast & tethering that'd be great.
