Nova Launcher on Android 4.4 KitKat? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Geeks!
I'm sure a lot of you have Nova Launcher on your N4s, and if you're like me; you can't wait to get your hands on 4.4 KitKat.
Does anybody out there know if TeslaCoil will have to release a newer version of Nova optimized for 4.4 or will it already be compatible as soon as 4.4 gets rolled out to our devices? I'd rather wait for it to be optimized rather than get 4.4 and be Nova-less for a week or 2.
In addition: my friend Tony just ordered the Nexus 5. will Nova Launcher be compatible with his device right out of the box?
Anybody with info please lemme know. I'm fine with putting 4.4 off for a few weeks until I know FOR SURE that I can have Nova Launcher on top of the new tasty OS.

I don't know the answer however, one thing that sucks for Nova Launcher is that the Google Experience launcher is not open source. That means Nova can't keep that stock launcher look on 4.4.

Nova works fine on KitKat. There's no reason why it shouldn't...

Nova is based on the AOSP launcher so I don't think that will be helpful. There is still a AOSP launcher in the KitKat code but I don't know if they are maintaining it anymore.

No not yet, not sure what Nova plans are. But I'm sure they'll come up with something in the upcoming days

I love Nova and I've used for all my phones, but why would you want to use it on a Nexus is beyond me.

Uhhh because the stock launcher is extremely uncustomizable? Nova can be very simple and look almost exactly like a stock launcher, but the amount of options it has are immense. I'm currently using the Google experience launcher and I really miss nova. Sticking with it for now though.

More customization than stock launcher like the static google search in <4.3, # of rows/columns, icon packs, etc.
Nova is based off AOSP Launcher anyways. So you're practically getting the stock launcher + added goodies. Of course this will be different with 4.4 in terms of the Google Now but I'm sure Nova will implement that someway.

Plus you can add gestures. Like if I swipe up on the phone icon I have it set up to direct dial my gf. Or a swipe up on home page opens app drawer. And you can backup your setup so if you flash Roms you can have your home screen set back up in seconds
Nova > stock launcher

I think it will be a little more difficult for custom launchers on 4.4 because of the integration of the launcher and Google now.
I don't see how they could integrate Google now into the left swipe or the "ok Google"command working from all home screens. This link shows my reasoning.

Actually that's one of the reasons why I use custom launchers: To get rid of Google Search, Google Now, and "always on" voice commands.
I don't need these anyway and as a bonus get longer battery life (by completely disabling Google Search).

I would happily use the 4.4 launcher if you could remove the persistent search bar, which does nothing but get in the way. Its seems utterly pointless given that you can open search a number of other ways almost instantly.

If you say "Ok Google" while on the home screen, does it launch the voice search like it does on the stock kitkat launcher ?

Can you use other launchers on the Note 10.1 or does Samsung's interface prohibit that (don't have mine yet, just curious)?

I actually thought Touchwiz was pretty good, my only real issue was with folders on the home screen. I organize my apps in folders instead of using multiple home screens. The problem was is that when I launched an app from one of the folders and then got out of the app the system thought I wanted to rename the folder, Got a little annoying.

I am a little confused when there is talk of launchers because some people talk about replacing Touchwiz with a launcher and I use a launcher called CircleLauncher Lite and still use Touchwiz. I use CircleLauncher Lite because it allows me to place icons on my desktop for different links like my Office icon and when I click on the Office icon a ring opens around the icon with icons linked to programs I use that are office related.
So what is the difference in the launcher I use and the launchers that replace Touchwiz?

circle launcher is just an app launcher, not home screen replacemet
i real launcher means a home screen replacement, they have different UI . u can try nova, apex, go, spd shell etc

Sounds like people should be calling the home screen launcher a desktop shell since it changes the user interface, function and look.

How is the chameleon interface and S-Pen interaction??
And, is it really that cool they "make believe" in commercials and app demos?

There isn't so much use for the S-Pen in chameleon as of now (and i don't think there is any support for it, but that's only a guess for now).
I wouldn't say that it is cool yet, but it reeks of potential.
I followed tsf since before release and it looks alot better now. Chameleon looks nice too. But i just feel launcher developers are charging too much. I mean 10 and 16 bucks ya right . Launchers should have free versions and a pro for like 5 bucks tops...
Currently im using tw launcher and own apex pro but havent felt the need to change yet

What features does Nova lack that Apex has?
The only feature I've noticed that is exclusive to Apex is the ability to make the search bar look like the tablet version. I emailed the Nova developer about this like nine months ago, and he said he may decide to add it in the future, but he obviously didn't.
Other than that, I haven't noticed anything exclusive to Apex.

Last time I checked it couldn't remove app labels in the app drawer and still had wide margins on the bottom of the home screens that couldn't be reduced/removed when the dock is absent. Apex does both of those.
Apex functions I need
Infinite scroll
Scrollable app bar
Gesture launch
KitKat has redundant access to google now / search. Swipe left, swipe up from home icon, say google now on any page. Why do we need all 3?
Also I dont want to have google now 1st screen to left. I like to have mail, calendar productivity full screen widgets to left then have music, news, reading widget apps to the right. My preference is no icons on screen above the app bar. Full screen widgets look great on such a nice screen. Simplicity please

Grab an icon and drag it to the right, off the edge of the screen. The GE launcher will create a new home screen for you to drop it on. Drag back to the left and it will remove the unused home screen.
After weeks use of this launcher, there is only one annoyance. The launcher keeps adding a page for reasons I'm not sure of and the page indicator is a plus sign instead of a dot. Can't figure out why it keeps doing that. I have to fix it by adding an icon on the screen and taking it out to have it disappear. See Screenshot.

I don't understand the appeal of the stock launcher. There are quite a few other apps that do everything it does x 10, like Nova or Apex Launchers. Have never seen an issue with lag or crashes with Nova and it's not difficult to add the Google Now stuff with the latest Google Search widgets and all that.
Ah I just much prefer how it is implemented, the Google now screen to the left is the only reason I favour it amongst other launchers. I've tried some of the widgets but they aren't the same :/

I actually don't like launchers that have too many options. The last thing I want to spend tons of time customizing is a launcher, and the stock launcher is simple, fast, and effective. Plus, I've gotten used to having Google Now right on the left panel much quicker than I thought I would. I don't like not having it on Apex or Nova.

Nope. I can get it to work using an older version of xposed framework but then none of the other modules work on the older version :/
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Just kind of seems like a non issue since you've probably spent more time figuring out why Unicon isn't working than it would have to set up another launcher. You can set up Google Now to open a ton of different ways that are as fast or faster than saying, "OK, Google" and the launcher is only as much effort to set up as you feel like putting into it. No one forces you to play with all the Settings and you can import the desktop grid from most launchers. But, that's what makes people flock to Android: choices. To each their own, and all that. Unfortunately, this is just 1 particular issue that doesn't have a perfect answer to get everything you need without much effort or some sort of compromise. Either an older Xposed with not many other mods or a different launcher. There are ways to enable Google Now hotwords on other launchers and to even get it to work while screen is off, but it is a rather convoluted way to do it and if you don't want to spend 10 minutes setting up a new launcher, then I'm gonna assume it's too much bother to go that route if you are really set on a different icon set.
I never said time was an issue for me. Its just more convenient to have unicon working

I would like to scroll up and down in app drawer (and not just page horizontaly) and be able to add new pages to the left of the main page (not only to the right), just to name a few

Nova launcher prime keep trying others but always end up going back so I'd say that's the best one

Stuck to the Google Experience launcher for 2 months after I got my N5. Then installed Nova launcher + Lumos icon pack a few weeks back after rooting and installing xposed framework + gravitybox and haven't looked back!
Nova launcher ..the best one with all gestures.. can use all my screwn now... rooted
Can you not add screens to the left if you turn off Google now?

Always used Apex; but since the GEL launcher came out, been using that on the N4 & now the N5. I only wished Nova or Apex would have swipe to go to Google Now like GEL.

Honestly the only reason why I don't use Nova right now is because there's no swipe to the left to get Google Now.

I alway used Nova on previous phones but i really liked google now in the GNL and also the hotword detection on the home in GNL. However, after the last update, they made sure the amount of icons were static independent of the DPI which makes it not really worth it.
I went back to Nova. Though I hope Nova does continue moving forward.
Best for me and the one I always fall back to is Nova launcher. I also wish they implement an easy access to Google Now in future updates.
