I've got my Nexus 5, and I can't get the home screen voice activation to work for the life of me.
Any ideas? Is there something that I need to activate?
Edit: Found the solution:
1) Voice search language must be set to English (US)". Doesn't work on "English (UK)". You can leave your system language as "English (UK)", you only need to change the voice search language.
2) "Ok Google" only works in three places: a) the homescreen, b) the Google Now page on the Google Experience Launcher (the extreme left page), c) the Google Now app/search window itself.
3) The phone must be AWAKE and UNLOCKED. Does not work from the lockscreen, even if the phone is set to the "Slide" lock. If the lockscreen is set to "None", the phone wakes to the homescreen immediately, so clearly it works, but is irrelevant.

Hi icedicicle,
Just to double check, this will wake up the phone even when the screen is off, right?
I just want to confirm the feature as this is what tips the scale in favour of Nexus (against G2) for me.

Its been reported (poorly) via a number of Tech sites and a Google Employee (on G+) that infact the Nexus 5 is unfortunately NOT touchless in the same way that the Moto X is. "Ok Google" does not wake the device, it can only be used on the Home Screen or within Google Now - can you confirm OP?
All I know is you have to have a NON-Secure Lockscreen or Slide.

It does NOT work on the lockscreen. I've tried both non-secure "Slide" and secure "Pattern".
It does not wake the phone from sleep either. It only works within Google Now and on the Homescreen after the phone has been waken and unlocked.

From what I'm seeing on Reddit/Around the net, you need to ensure your language is set to US (en-US) unlike some people in UK its not working, must set to US locale.

Not likely. The Moto X has a dedicated always on low-power core for listening out for the keyword. Doubt the Nexus 5 has the requisite hardware.

Well the Snapdragon 800 APPARENTLY is meant to have 'Snapdragon Voice Activation' which is identical to Moto X 'always listening' - as found here:

Unbelievable they still can't support UK English.
And the voice activation via "Ok, Google" was available from the Google Now screen since 4.1 if you set your voice lang to US English, so this is a real non feature.
Pretty sure the phone having to be screenon and unlocked is a software limitation because just being able to say "OK Google" at the homescreen is not just a 4.4 feature but a Nexus 5 feature. It says on the 4.4 site that this feature won't work on other nexus devices.
So im guessing the hardware capability is there, they just didn't want to copy motox.

as the MotoX isn't available in the UK I sure as hell wish they'd copy it!!
Further to that I wouldn't mind a knock-on feature out the box as per the G2. I know that's what mods / roms and for but still, OTB would be nice.
Ah crap. The thing that excited me more of this new Nexus was the Ok Google thingy but I guess it won't work on Italian language. Shoulda kept the N4 for some things, but oh well

Apparently there are rumors that with a non-secure lockscreen (no lockscreen) or Slide, you will be able to use it from the Lockscreen too. But the OP has confirmed, or atleast during his tests, haven't been able to get this to work.
Since the Snapdragon 800 apparently has Snapdragon Voice Activation, its my hopes that the Dev/ROM gurus will be able to hack/port over 'waking' the device. It is something I hoped would be available day one as the Moto X is not available in my country either...

Yeah, it works great on my D802 4.4.2!
Working great for me on 4.4.2 with two issues.
Certain widgets don't work
"OK Google" Doesn't work. Mic icon is soild and it says say OK Google.. but then the mic icon goes hollow and the voice command doesn't work. Hotword detection is on and English US is selected.
GEL
This one works without any problems on stock 4.2.2 , "Ok, Google" works. Also tried this launcher on my Note 8 tablet. Also, no problems at all. Probably will work on any device

Lg widgets work with lg launcher only so weather widget for example won't work with other launcher. "Ok google" works (tested in two different g2) but phone needs to be unlocked. It won't wake up ur phone unless it is a moto x. Neither the version I posted nor the one that is posted by the guy above. It is always listening as long as the phone is awake and u are not in any application (i.e game etc)
Also confirmed that LG weather widget does not work on with the GEL launcher. In addition, my wallpapers are squished. Hitting home from Google Now does not bring me back to the main screen, unlike the Nexus 5's launcher.
'OK Google' works when you have the offline speech recognition pack downloaded.
If that still does not work, LG's KK update turned on the 'on screen phone' in accessibility, which interferes with hot keyword recognition.
Please let me know if others are experiencing the same issue.

Posting from my LG G2 while driving an Evo IX.
I hear over and over how the Ok Snapdragon is more responsive and the phone seems to pick it up better from the lock screen. What I was hoping for when the CM12 5.0.2 came out with the Ok OnePlus that my voice would be able to unlock the phone. I still have to put my lock pattern in after I wake it with Ok OnePlus. That kind of defeats the purpose IMO.
Will Ok Snapdragon do this?
Probably not, as anyone could say "OK oneplus" or "OK Snapdragon" and unlock your phone. If you set a pattern, you'll always have to enter it whatsoever. The only way here is to remove the pattern on the lockscreen and any other security method. "OK Oneplus" will then unlock your phone

I guess I was under the impression that the technology allowed it to use my voice to unlock the device.
At least I can say 'Ok OnePlus' to activate the screen then say 'Ok Goggle' to do hands free searches or start a timer (which I use a lot)

NO, you are right, just disable ok, oneplus and then enable google now.

so you are saying when connected to a power source it will unlock but when not connected it wont do it with the same voice command.
Not for nothing but why have a lock and then have it be disabled by a voice command. Its kind of counterproductive and see this as a feature and not a bug per se.

This is how google protects the moto phones with always listening feature.
There is a lof of phone out there with the same CPU meaning they are able to use this feature (like theOPO and many others) but google hardcoded so we cant use it when you unplug the device.

So now that we have root, is there any way to get Google Now to detect our hotword everywhere? I really miss this feature from my Moto X. I know the X has a slightly different implementation, but Lollipop has some of this functionality built in, so I'm hoping its something we can get to with root.

Not sure, but with Nova Launcher, you can at least enable Google Now from the home screen by saying OK Google. Another trick I learned is that you can hold down the home button, that will take you to Google and then you say OK Google. It's okay but still not the ideal solution.

My Galaxy S5 does this even without root, in fact it's built in to every Lollipop build now AFAIK. It's in the Google Settings App > Voice > "Ok Google" detection > Turn on both From the Google app and From any screen option. Voila!
Hope this works on the S6 as well.

THAT's the problem.....it DOESN'T!!!!!
Samsung decided in it's infinite wisdom that the Lollipop functionality should disabled because it interfered with S Voice. Thus, no hotword everywhere for S6 users.
I guess this was not intentional and Google and samsung both are trying to figure out what went wrong. There was just an article about it.
OK Google from anywhere is working again. Google fixed it.
Maybe I am missing a setting somewhere or something, but the Google Assistant on my XZP only responds when the screen is on. I have it set to "any time" in the Assistant settings. Is this normal? I'm pretty sure it worked whenever (screen off/locked/charging/etc.) on my last couple of phones. I'd like it to at least work while the phone is charging.
Any ideas?
well yeah I had the same problem, apparently, Google changed the settings of the program, and it was only working while the phone is charging, so whenever u upgrade the application to its latest version you will lose this privilege. my advice and that's what I'm doing is to uninstall the updates from the google app and then give it all the permissions it needs and you will have it to work anytime the phone is charging no matter if the screen is on or off !!
btw my Google app version is 7.2.26.21.arm64
This is something that I absolutely hate about the Google assistant. Google should allow the assistant to be used regardless of the device being locked or charging like you can with Siri and Cortana (on WM). It's so irritating to have to actually turn my screen on to use the Google assistant.

Exactly. It's really pointless to have an assistant that requires me to interact with the phone. It's like Google doesn't understand what an assistant is for. I really wish they would also implement what Cortana does in terms of how she handles text messages when connected to Bluetooth devices. I love that she would ask if I want her to read it to me and then after reading it will ask me if I want to dictate a reply and send it.
Honestly, for some of the flak that I've seen Cortana getting lately, she's a much better and much more useful assistant than Google or Sri and she's probably the thing I miss the most from WM10.

It's not sure it's entirely Google's fault. It worked properly on previous android phones that I've owned.
I just noticed that it seems to work now with the Oreo update. My phone now wakes up and responds to "ok, Google" while the screen is off/locked. ?
This is by far the best part of the Oreo update. Google Assistant is at least 800x more useful now that it is actually hands-free.
Doesn't work wih mine. It blinks like I could say somehing, but stays closed. When I unlock it, nothing happens. My old phone then went into the assistant mode.
Which options do i have to set?
@Puksom had said in another thread that he had OK Google working to wake up the phone, but I've heard from many others that it doesn't.
Hoping anyone running various versions of MIUI Global and/or Chinese can chime in if they have this feature working.
If it works for you, please let me know your build number. I can confirm it doesn't work on the latest Chinese stable, but, since I still have another couple days for bootloader unlock, I can't confirm much else.
Note that by OK Google wake-up, I mean with the screen off, and the phone unplugged.
By unlock, I mean that you set a PIN/Password, and that saying OK Google can bypass this lock screen if your voice matches.
(By the way, a somewhat difficult work-around for people who need this feature but can't get it working...)
You can set up, on the Chinese builds, a voice wake-up for the Chinese assistant.
Although you'll need to pronounce it well, you need to program the wake-up word, Xiao ai, by saying Xiao ai tong xue
Then saying "Xiao ai" can make the phone wake up... from there, you can say "OK google" and access assistant. But of course we all want to access assistant directly.
I have that working I'm on official Chinese rom with Google apps and services installed it works ok
I'm running Global Version (9.5.4), and it doesn't work.
When the screen is off, it's not listening. When the screen is on, on the lock screen, it activates, but it doesn't unlock the phone (there's no Trusted Voice), so you need to enter your PIN/pattern.
Trusted Places is not available either, so there is no way to have the phone unlock automatically except using a Mi Band or some other bluetooth device.
@funziebear What is working for you exactly? OK Google with screen off? Does it also unlock your phone automatically or do you have to enter your pattern/pin as well? I though no version of MIUI supported any of those features, based on what I have been able to dug up.
I'm also on the Global Rom and it does NOT work. As well as not having any face unlock options.
Very disappointing.
I'm on official chinese stable. Installed all Google Apps and gave full permissions and autostart permissions to all Google Apps. Installed Assistant and was even able to activate it properly with wake-up and trusted voice. But it's still not working. There was once a message from within the assistant, that said Xiao Ai is still the default assistant and Google Assistant is not set as default.
It's working with screen on, but not unlocking
It's not working with screen off

within your helm of knowledge do you believe it's going to receive this feature in a near-future update?
Cuz I ran into this EXACT same issue with my Galaxy S7 and saw people with Galaxy S6 and S8 facing the same issue, all of them can wake-up the screen, even the word can be configured to whatever word the user wants as long as it is phonetically pronounceable in the 5 most common languages, but the catch is that it only works with Samsung Voice later renamed to Bixby. And I even tried running both Samsung and Google's assistants simultaneously, it doesn't work, they both compete for the exclusive use of the microphone so the idea of using one to wake-up the screen and the other to execute the command is not practical or viable since the second one will only have access to the microphone-audio-stream after the first one released it. So in the end I deactivated the ****ty Samsung Voice crap and decided to stay with Google's Assistant even though it does not wake-up the phone.
what a barbaric decision this is specially coming from Xiaomi. truly ****ed up
Any updates on this? I haven't tried newer MIUI 10 versions, wondering if they added support.
