Google Assistant / "OK Google" Wake-Up and Unlock - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S Questions & Answers

@Puksom had said in another thread that he had OK Google working to wake up the phone, but I've heard from many others that it doesn't.
Hoping anyone running various versions of MIUI Global and/or Chinese can chime in if they have this feature working.
If it works for you, please let me know your build number. I can confirm it doesn't work on the latest Chinese stable, but, since I still have another couple days for bootloader unlock, I can't confirm much else.
Note that by OK Google wake-up, I mean with the screen off, and the phone unplugged.
By unlock, I mean that you set a PIN/Password, and that saying OK Google can bypass this lock screen if your voice matches.
(By the way, a somewhat difficult work-around for people who need this feature but can't get it working...)
You can set up, on the Chinese builds, a voice wake-up for the Chinese assistant.
Although you'll need to pronounce it well, you need to program the wake-up word, Xiao ai, by saying Xiao ai tong xue
Then saying "Xiao ai" can make the phone wake up... from there, you can say "OK google" and access assistant. But of course we all want to access assistant directly.

I have that working I'm on official Chinese rom with Google apps and services installed it works ok

I'm running Global Version (9.5.4), and it doesn't work.
When the screen is off, it's not listening. When the screen is on, on the lock screen, it activates, but it doesn't unlock the phone (there's no Trusted Voice), so you need to enter your PIN/pattern.
Trusted Places is not available either, so there is no way to have the phone unlock automatically except using a Mi Band or some other bluetooth device.
@funziebear What is working for you exactly? OK Google with screen off? Does it also unlock your phone automatically or do you have to enter your pattern/pin as well? I though no version of MIUI supported any of those features, based on what I have been able to dug up.

I'm also on the Global Rom and it does NOT work. As well as not having any face unlock options.
Very disappointing.

I'm on official chinese stable. Installed all Google Apps and gave full permissions and autostart permissions to all Google Apps. Installed Assistant and was even able to activate it properly with wake-up and trusted voice. But it's still not working. There was once a message from within the assistant, that said Xiao Ai is still the default assistant and Google Assistant is not set as default.
It's working with screen on, but not unlocking
It's not working with screen off

within your helm of knowledge do you believe it's going to receive this feature in a near-future update?
Cuz I ran into this EXACT same issue with my Galaxy S7 and saw people with Galaxy S6 and S8 facing the same issue, all of them can wake-up the screen, even the word can be configured to whatever word the user wants as long as it is phonetically pronounceable in the 5 most common languages, but the catch is that it only works with Samsung Voice later renamed to Bixby. And I even tried running both Samsung and Google's assistants simultaneously, it doesn't work, they both compete for the exclusive use of the microphone so the idea of using one to wake-up the screen and the other to execute the command is not practical or viable since the second one will only have access to the microphone-audio-stream after the first one released it. So in the end I deactivated the ****ty Samsung Voice crap and decided to stay with Google's Assistant even though it does not wake-up the phone.
what a barbaric decision this is specially coming from Xiaomi. truly ****ed up

Any updates on this? I haven't tried newer MIUI 10 versions, wondering if they added support.

I take it nothing's changed with the more recent releases?
I tried the MIUI 10 Global Stable, and still no wake-up by voice.

Can OK Snapdragon unlock my phone where OK OnePlus doesn't seem to?

I hear over and over how the Ok Snapdragon is more responsive and the phone seems to pick it up better from the lock screen. What I was hoping for when the CM12 5.0.2 came out with the Ok OnePlus that my voice would be able to unlock the phone. I still have to put my lock pattern in after I wake it with Ok OnePlus. That kind of defeats the purpose IMO.
Will Ok Snapdragon do this?
Probably not, as anyone could say "OK oneplus" or "OK Snapdragon" and unlock your phone. If you set a pattern, you'll always have to enter it whatsoever. The only way here is to remove the pattern on the lockscreen and any other security method. "OK Oneplus" will then unlock your phone

I guess I was under the impression that the technology allowed it to use my voice to unlock the device.
At least I can say 'Ok OnePlus' to activate the screen then say 'Ok Goggle' to do hands free searches or start a timer (which I use a lot)

NO, you are right, just disable ok, oneplus and then enable google now.
Connect your phone to power and say ok google, it will unlock itself.:highfive:
oneplus just simply sucks!! i purchased this phone for that feature only, never been able to use it.
never buy anything from them again.

so you are saying when connected to a power source it will unlock but when not connected it wont do it with the same voice command.
Not for nothing but why have a lock and then have it be disabled by a voice command. Its kind of counterproductive and see this as a feature and not a bug per se.

This is how google protects the moto phones with always listening feature.
There is a lof of phone out there with the same CPU meaning they are able to use this feature (like theOPO and many others) but google hardcoded so we cant use it when you unplug the device.
I know it sucks but its marketing...

"OK Google"

So I've tried to enable "OK GOOGLE" and it's working - but not when the screen is turned off and the phone is of the charger. I'm coming from a Nexus 6 and always found the always listening mode for OK GOOGLE to be super handy. Any way to enable it on the Mate 9?

The phone has the technology to listen to a wake-up phrase. In fact, the Chinese version has an assistant (which only works in Mandarin of course) which can do this.
Unfortunately the international version does not support waking up to OK Google. You can set a wake-up command to make calls, and then cancel that and then say OK google, but it's a huge pain.
I think in the near future there will be an update which integrates Alexa using this technology though.
I have the US version with B138 ROM. I changed the wake up command to OK Google. When the phone wakes up I say OK Google again and your in. You can set the phone wake-up command to anything but I figured OK Google was less weird sounding if I'm in a public place or work. It just sounds like I am saying OK Google twice.

Ok Google detection?

Maybe I am missing a setting somewhere or something, but the Google Assistant on my XZP only responds when the screen is on. I have it set to "any time" in the Assistant settings. Is this normal? I'm pretty sure it worked whenever (screen off/locked/charging/etc.) on my last couple of phones. I'd like it to at least work while the phone is charging.
Any ideas?
well yeah I had the same problem, apparently, Google changed the settings of the program, and it was only working while the phone is charging, so whenever u upgrade the application to its latest version you will lose this privilege. my advice and that's what I'm doing is to uninstall the updates from the google app and then give it all the permissions it needs and you will have it to work anytime the phone is charging no matter if the screen is on or off !!
btw my Google app version is 7.2.26.21.arm64
This is something that I absolutely hate about the Google assistant. Google should allow the assistant to be used regardless of the device being locked or charging like you can with Siri and Cortana (on WM). It's so irritating to have to actually turn my screen on to use the Google assistant.

Yeah, once the phone is in my hand I don't really need the assistant. I can do it myself...

Exactly. It's really pointless to have an assistant that requires me to interact with the phone. It's like Google doesn't understand what an assistant is for. I really wish they would also implement what Cortana does in terms of how she handles text messages when connected to Bluetooth devices. I love that she would ask if I want her to read it to me and then after reading it will ask me if I want to dictate a reply and send it.
Honestly, for some of the flak that I've seen Cortana getting lately, she's a much better and much more useful assistant than Google or Sri and she's probably the thing I miss the most from WM10.

It's not sure it's entirely Google's fault. It worked properly on previous android phones that I've owned.
I just noticed that it seems to work now with the Oreo update. My phone now wakes up and responds to "ok, Google" while the screen is off/locked. ?
This is by far the best part of the Oreo update. Google Assistant is at least 800x more useful now that it is actually hands-free.
Doesn't work wih mine. It blinks like I could say somehing, but stays closed. When I unlock it, nothing happens. My old phone then went into the assistant mode.
Which options do i have to set?

Google Assistant On Lock Screen

Hi i Have An Honor 6X With EMUI 5.0 And I Wanted To Enable Google Assistant On The Lock Screen But I Can Only Use It To Unlock The Device And Not Use It From The Lock Screen, So Is It Possible To Use It Without Unlocking The Phone
Did you tried to activate the "Ok Google" feature by Google settings? In this way you should be able to interact with it by simply pronouncing Ok Google nearby your phone

I can say Ok Google from any app but i want to use the Assistant on the lock screen without unlocking the device.
And i also had another problem with the Assistant, i have a pair of Aukey EP-B27 Bluetooth earphones and when i use the Assistant her sound is very bad but when i listen to music or watch videos the sound is very good, so what causes that ?

Don't know if it's possible, even with root privileges or Xposed modules (actually unofficial and unstable versions are available for Nougat, but i strongly suggest you to don't try those). At the moment, the maximum i could advise in my experience (i don't even use Assistant, i only use Now rarely) is going to Assistant settings -> Ok Google detection -> and turn on the "Trusted Voice" option to give to Assistant the permission to unlock the screen when Ok Google is heard. For your earphones, i don't use Bluetooth earphones so i couldn't provide a real feedback about. Maybe future Assistant versions would fix the issue; begin to warn Google about it by writing to them, in way that they could listen your problem.
Thats not possible. It may work in pixels just like Siri works but not sure if it will work on non pixel or other devices. Even not sure if it works on pixels. I am unable tp get it working on China variant so can't test this for you mate. For me it even doesn't work with unlocked screen. Have disabled the inbuilt voice assistant but still Google assistant doesn't work

Question Google Assistant Confirmation Beep

I was able to use accessibility settings on my OG Pixel and Pixel 3 to enable a confirmation beep when Google Assistant has been activated (after I say "OK Google") but I can't seem to find a way to do that on my Pixel 7 Pro. Can anyone help?
You have to enable "switch access" in accessibility settings.

I've done this on my OG Pixel and Pixel 3 but it doesn't seem too be working on my Pixel 7 Pro.
I've done it twice now, first setup, and again after a factory reset. Worked both times. Strange.

Also here it is not working to enable switch access...
In Google Assistant settings through the Google app you go to accessibility and the options are there and working for me. Not sure if they've recently moved or been changed but I've never used whatever switch access is.
Can confirm that you have to have both of the settings enabled in the screenshot above in order to hear a beep. I don't even have voice active enabled.

Nobody's ever mentioned that setting before but I already had that enabled. I get a confirmation beep when I'm using Bluetooth or Android Auto but not when it's just my phone.
I screwed mine up recently. The above settings were set before, and I've gotten a beep since I got it. Post-screwup, I tried accessibility settings to no avail. Things that were changed beforehand (perhaps - new P7P and I've been both tinkering around and busy - plus I sometimes plug in a DAC and use Neutron Player, which is very possessive. So I can't recall when I noticed the lack of a beep precisely within a day's usage).
So, things that might have affected it:
I allowed Google Assistant to access my screen, and I enabled flash screen when it does so.
I upgraded from the December to January patch.
I upgraded, afterwards, with the small Play Store patch.
I enabled... what's it called - verbal shortcuts like "Answer" that don't require "Hey Google" first. <- Given that Google's reason for zapping the beep was to save response time, I'm suspicious of this, but I've changed quite a bit, so further testing is required.
I'll post if I get the beep back.
***What follows isn't necessary to the topic.***
It's daft that this is even an issue that can't be solved simply with a toggle. Or better, actually asking Assistant to reply when summoned with a beep or phrase, perhaps "Yes, Sir?" In an era with ChatGPT, we ought to be able to at least choose efficient or chummy. Google knows more about me than most friends, they could at least be friendly about it.
[I'm using an unlocked P7P from Google. I'm on Verizon with an eSIM. I have Assistant set so that it's constantly listening. And I've generally got things set to try out everything no matter how intrusive. Hey - it's the first phone I've actively chosen since my Note 4; I wanted to see what we've been given for all that's been taken away. I'm disappointed at all the features that ought to be helpful to my aged father, but are too difficult to use for someone intelligent that can't learn new things well. I'm also seeing just how vastly intrusive it is while saying, carefully, that it isn't. GrapheneOS may be in my future - perhaps because I simply can (goodbye forever, dedicated Verizon phones).]
Just tried Hey Google and ok Google. Both produced the same result, the Google Assistant pops up without a beep.
