I just purchased a 16gb Nexus 5 through the Google Play store. It is my understanding that this can be activated on Sprint and AT&Ts network.
I plan on initially activating my device under my current Sprint account (should be easy, call it in and have them activate the device by the IMEI/DEC). Right?
However, eventually I will be moving to AT&T...does anyone know how this change of carriers will work or if it is even possible? and if it is possible what steps need to be taken? Is it as simple as flashing new radios and switching out a SIM card?
Thanks in advance
It's GSM unlocked, just put in your AT&T sim card and you're all set

Yes, as it has the necessary bands and just to double check I verified with AT&T. i was a little worried after my purchase and google play did not list them as carriers

I'm about to buy a Nexus S i9020A (AT&T) on eBay, but I need to know if there's an application here to simunlock it or a good site to buy a code (if you have a website, please tell me price). I've been reading and in one thread someone replied saying It's already unlocked and that Nexus device sold has always been sim unlocked (even those sold subsidized by the carriers)... so I don't know what to think about it. In another thread the user said he bought on in Craigslist and he said it was unlocked and rooted... which got my attention the "unlocked" part... so, there's a way to simunlocked or not?
Please help me.
I'm waiting for your response to buy it.
Best regards.
It will probably be unlocked but if it isn't, the Nexus is is one of the easiest phones to unlock. Look up a tutorial somewhere here on xda, or wait for a more senior member to give you his advice here.
Good luck

"Unlocked" wrt/Nexus S refers to bootloader unlocking. IIRC the Nexus S cannot be SIM-locked at all - the baseband doesn't support it.
It doesn't need to be Sim unlocked. They are all unlocked by default.

See? That's what worries me. Are you sure about that dude? The thing is in this thread the author said the i9020A doesn't work with a T-Mobile SIM card... so?

It's obvious it doesn't work with a T-Mobile SIM card.
The Nexus S GSM has 2 versions:
i9020A, working on HSDPA 850/1900/2100
i9020T, working on HSDPA 900/1700/2100
Both are GSM, but different bands. They're not "software locked" but simply unable to connect because it's a modem issue.
So if you have a T-Mobile SIM, you need a Nexus S whose model number is I9020T

Exact.
Not exact. T mobile will work just fine. T mobile 3g data service will not
All gsm networks will work on any 9020/9023. 3g not so much

Wrong again, in parts. Since we're not talking about the US only.
Not all operators around the world actually serve their users with 2G. Just up north, in the beautiful country called Canada, many operators only offer 3G, including mine. Thus, in the end, you end up with no service if 3G isn't supported.

Hey, I have a similar problem, I bought a nexus S i9020a second-hand and flashed it to JB using Nexus Root Toolkit...I am getting no service. Something must have gone wrong, the sim works in my other phone and I have tried calling my wireless provider rogers to repush the sim card anyways. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

You need a i9020a for Rogers, so that's good. Check for broken pins in the SIM slot. Happens too often with the Nexus S.

Any compatible radio would work however. Only if he flashed one that isn't compatible.
Is it possible to flash, with a custom ROM, a Sprint Galaxy SIII over to Verizon or am I dreaming?

Unfortunately the sim card for the sprint version is internal so that wouldn't work for sprint phones.

It won't happen, unless you have an in with someone in Verizon that can add your ESN to the system manually (not bloody likely), the ability to flash a Verizon ROM on your phone (difficult, but not impossible, but a fast way to a softbrick), the ability to unsolder the Sprint LTE SIM from the phone and replace it with a Verizon one, and the ability to live without LTE for the life of the phone.

Well, that doesn't sound very appealing, living without LTE. But heck, I can't use it now anyway since Sprint's LTE service is up in almost NO locations

much easier to just sell the Sprint one, turn around and buy a Verizon one
Hopefully I'm in the right spot here, first time posting.
I just bought an unlocked (T Mobile version) One S, popped in my AT&T SIM and I'm not getting any data whatsoever. From what I had read, it should be able to use AT&T's 3G, but I'm not picking it up. Is there anything that I need to do in order to activate it or whatnot?
Many thanks in advance.

I'm having the same problem, I bought a second-hand device, T-Mobile Splash-Screen but using Orange (Romania). Calls/SMS work fine but no 3G. If the VPN settings are the issue, are they all the same, where could you find them and so on?
Just Google for the correct APN for your carrier.

Do this. I've tried to post the exact settings on here, but some of the information will shop up as a link, and xda won't let me post links yet. If you google it there should be an xda thread about it, that's where I got my APN info from.
Hey! Were you able to access ATT's 3G towers?
I'm using it on straight talk att and I get 4g as soon as I enter the correct apn.

So I bought my son straight talk pre paid plan for his tmobile one s. Where we live straight talk uses T-Mobile as a carrier. Right now he is visiting his mom for xmass and the area he is in has straight talk but through at&t. Can I change the apn settings to make his tmobile straight talk work on at&t straight talk? I did try to change his apn settings to at&t straight talk and the apn wouldn't stick. He's running Zen Rom. Also I never updated the hboot. It's still below v .13 (that iterations not right but I think u guys well know what I mean.) Thanks for the help!

Hard to say. I also have ST but I unlocked my phone and am using the micro at&t sim card. I'm not sure exactly how it works buy considering there's a at&t and TMO sim card. I think it works with the network the sim card is associated with. I could be 100% wrong but I may also be right.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to give ST customer service a call. How lame though tmobile ST doesn't work on at&t ST. I asked at the store where I bought the SIM card and they said that they only sell ST through Tmobile in the twin cities... oh well maybe I can get it online or just change to another at&t prepaid.

Hopefully CS will give you some good info. They are never too helpful when i call in.. Not sure if it'll work but maybe order an at&t sim and just switch out which ever sim with the better coverage is.

Hi everyone!
I just got on to ST with a t-mobile htc one s and am using the APN given on the sheet that came with the sim card. My emails are coming in just fine but when I go to send or attempt to download a picture text, it fails. Can anyone tell me what they have used for their APN? I was also curious if maybe the locked tmobile APN's are having something to do with the fail. Anyone know how to get rid of them so I can create a separate MMS APN?
THANKS!

Just noticed actually that the ST APN isn't sticking. It keeps going back to the locked TMO APN. The version of Android I'm on is 4.0.4. I just tried to use the app APN Lock, but it states that Android versions 4.0+ don't allow it to work. I'm using the TMO ST SIM card.

I'd definitely recommend you unlock your bootloader(if you haven't done so already) flash recovery and install a custom Sense Rom or maybe even give a AOSP Rom a try. I personally just installed LiquidSmooth Rc1.5(AOSP) And when I booted up the ST apn was already there and selected..
All the necessary tutorials and roms are located in the Development Section.
This all assuming you haven't unlocked/rooted your one s before

Thank you for your reply! I really appreciate it!
I haven't rooted it or done anything with it. I'm a super total noob when it comes to this stuff. Before this phone I had a blackberry forever and a day so I'm a bit lost.
So I'm looking into traveling to Portugal this summer and I'm wondering if I can grab a 3G data only card from Vodofone and pop it into my S3. I know the phone needs to be unlocked for this to work and I have seen a long involved tutorial on here on how to unlock the phone, but I've also heard Verizon will unlock a phone for you if you are a customer in good standing. Is this true? If I can get Verizon to unlock my phone should I theoretically be able to use this data sim card in Portugal?
Also, I know Vodafone lets you make calls to other Vodafone users for free, will I be able to do this if a get a sim card with some prepaid data on it only? Am I still considered to be on Vodafone's cellular network?
Thanks so much!
As a side: If anyone has an experience with Vodafone's 3G in and around the Lisbon area let me know how it is!! I'm mainly looks to tether my phone to a laptop and do some development work while I'm over there.

I'm pretty sure the thread they're referring to is the GSM travel thread. If using a JB TW rom, one just needs to edit the apn's like you mentioned.
Got it, thanks!
I've also heard that the Verizon GSIII does not have the radio's for internation GSM 3G, is this correct?

I would say that's incorrect given the thread I posted which contains plenty of user experiences contradicting that statement. I'm eager to do this myself if I travel again this year.
The primary thing you just need to do is have an international sim and also use one of the mentioned apps that adjusts your APNs.

Thank you! When you say 'international sim' do you mean just a sim from another country or do I have to ask for some specific type of sim card? Meaning, if I got to a Vodafone kiosk and get a prepaid sim card would it work?

Yes, I mean a sim from another country.
From what I've read, that's pretty much what you do. You just pay for whichever plan you want then follow those steps in the link. I can't speak from experience so I'm useless there. Depending on the carrier and country, some folks seem to have gotten HSPA others have gotten 2G. I'd love to know what you're results were after your trip either here or in that thread.
