Straight talk with One S and changing apns - HTC One S

Sent from my SGS3

So I bought my son straight talk pre paid plan for his tmobile one s. Where we live straight talk uses T-Mobile as a carrier. Right now he is visiting his mom for xmass and the area he is in has straight talk but through at&t. Can I change the apn settings to make his tmobile straight talk work on at&t straight talk? I did try to change his apn settings to at&t straight talk and the apn wouldn't stick. He's running Zen Rom. Also I never updated the hboot. It's still below v .13 (that iterations not right but I think u guys well know what I mean.) Thanks for the help!

Hard to say. I also have ST but I unlocked my phone and am using the micro at&t sim card. I'm not sure exactly how it works buy considering there's a at&t and TMO sim card. I think it works with the network the sim card is associated with. I could be 100% wrong but I may also be right.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to give ST customer service a call. How lame though tmobile ST doesn't work on at&t ST. I asked at the store where I bought the SIM card and they said that they only sell ST through Tmobile in the twin cities... oh well maybe I can get it online or just change to another at&t prepaid.

Hopefully CS will give you some good info. They are never too helpful when i call in.. Not sure if it'll work but maybe order an at&t sim and just switch out which ever sim with the better coverage is.

Hi everyone!
I just got on to ST with a t-mobile htc one s and am using the APN given on the sheet that came with the sim card. My emails are coming in just fine but when I go to send or attempt to download a picture text, it fails. Can anyone tell me what they have used for their APN? I was also curious if maybe the locked tmobile APN's are having something to do with the fail. Anyone know how to get rid of them so I can create a separate MMS APN?
THANKS!

What Rom are you on? If stock Sense what version? Also are you using the TMO ST SIM card or are you unlocked and using AT&T?

Just noticed actually that the ST APN isn't sticking. It keeps going back to the locked TMO APN. The version of Android I'm on is 4.0.4. I just tried to use the app APN Lock, but it states that Android versions 4.0+ don't allow it to work. I'm using the TMO ST SIM card.

I'd definitely recommend you unlock your bootloader(if you haven't done so already) flash recovery and install a custom Sense Rom or maybe even give a AOSP Rom a try. I personally just installed LiquidSmooth Rc1.5(AOSP) And when I booted up the ST apn was already there and selected..
All the necessary tutorials and roms are located in the Development Section.
This all assuming you haven't unlocked/rooted your one s before

I haven't rooted it or done anything with it. I'm a super total noob when it comes to this stuff. Before this phone I had a blackberry forever and a day so I'm a bit lost.

Will It Work On ATT?

So, my friend has a Galaxy S 4G from T-mobile. I unlocked the sim, installed Slim ICS, and popped in an ATT SIM card. The radio gets no signal at all. Is it possible to use this phone on the ATT network?
Yes it will work. But how did you unlock the phone without sticking the ATT sim card in first?
Unlocked it when it was on stock. It won't work with either sim unless on stock.

Have you checked the APN?
My unlocked stock (jk6) has no problems with the simple mobile chip or my employer's at&t chip. I used the hex edit method to unlock. When I put whatever chip in, the correct apn settings magically appears too.
It depends on the rom. CyanogenMod has a nice database of apn settings, while stock roms usually just have their carrier's apn and a few international settings.
Definitely check the apn settings on the phone. Might also want to try the sidekick t839 modem. Let us know if their modem works better for AT&T's service.
EDIT: also, check with a t-mo sim card, just to make sure you're not having /efs issues.
Found one that works. Thanks all.

This, it is the only way. I have heard that T-Mobile will give the codes out if you say that you are going out of the country for a vacation or something of that nature.
Also, the T-Mobile version works with ATT's HSPA+ data, but not the other way around. Just so you know.
Sim unlock would be the way crazy vato as mentioned above.. however, without the correct xml files you'll never get 4gee or mms capability... You can set the apn and get interwebs but mms will be a diff story... I just spent a ****wad of time moettling with a att windows mango phone and got lucky enough to somehow make the xml files writeable to change them from att to tmo... Good luck holmsdog.. let us know the result..
Also, make sure the s3 even supports the upper end frequencies needed for the mms support dudeholms

For Those looking to use the N5 On AT&T...

Just wanted to give you a heads up on my experience today based on the N5 and AT&T. I walked in and told them what phone i was waiting for and they pretty much set me up in 5 mins with a sim and a plan. They said when i get the phone i should be able to put the sim in and it will activate. He did say that i may have to come in to have the APN fixed if im not seeing the correct speeds. It was a lot easier then i expected, but if your interested in using the N5 with at&t just go in and they can have everything set up for you for the arrival of your N5. As of right now, I'm on their mobile share plan, But i can easily switch to prepaid if i want. I don't don't trust prepaid when it comes to speeds and coverage.
idk about prepaid but hopefully i will just take mine out of my One and throw it in the N5
Just a heads up, you will not have to go in to AT&T to have them make APN changes. You can find all of the different APN settings for AT&T here on XDA on many different threads. That being said, I have the HTC One Google Edition and did not have to change the APN settings at all when I stuck in my sim. I had LTE immediately.
If you do need to change the APN settings they are really easy to do in the settings of the phone, but hopefully the phone will read your sim and know automatically which APN to use.

Here is a post that has them: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26821716
To get there you go to Settings>More>Mobile networks>Access Point Names > the either select the AT&T PTA from the list or hit the plus button to add the APN settings in this post.
I will take a screen shot in a minute and post it, I have to switch my AT&T Sim card back into my phone to do it (I am using a TMobile sim for a while to see the differences).
Here is a screen shot of the APN selection screen and then the settings held within the PTA APN (which is the LTE APN for AT&T). Just a note this is 4.3 but I am sure it will be very similar on 4.4. Good luck. Mine won't be here until the 7th, after that I will know for sure if it has the pre-programmed APN's.

I would not expect to see this on AT&T at all. The nexus 4 never made it there, but it was at T-Mobile. That does not mean that it will not work on AT&T though. I have been using nexus phones on AT&T's network since the Nexus One without any problem. You do have to make sure you have an LTE enabled plan to get LTE however. You should be able to do that online.
I too have an HTC One on AT&T. I converted it to a GPe though and receive OTAs. That said, I never had to change APNs either with that device. My N5 should be here before the 7th and I can tell everyone if it's a simple sim swap or changing of APNs

Thanks for posting the screencaps. Does the APN have to be this ATT PTA? Because I see ATT Phone is a choice and that is the APN I use on my HTC One with Google Play Edition rom flashed, and I have an ATT LTE sim which works fine, I get normal LTE speeds.

I think both work for LTE now. I just checked and seem to come up with the same results with LTE speeds. Something else you might want to check is if MMS works on both APN's. Sometimes this is another area that gets messed up when switching APN's.
I didn't have any problems switching my sim from my S3. Though AT&T still seems to think I have an HTC One X+.

Moving to ATT

Hey guys I want to take my Verizon branded m8 over to straight talk with ATT SIM. So far I've rooted , s off'd and did supercid. Is it as easy as installing ATT RUU and installing straight talk SIM card?
I've seen in the threads that other people have done this but will 4g or LTE still work?
Thanks for any help
HSPA+ is what I get
Did you flash a AT&T Rom or just threw in the AT&T SIM card? And thanks for responding
I just threw in a At&t Sim card. My bootloader is locked so I can't flash Roms.

I plan on doing this today as well.... Did you port from Verizon to ST? If so how did that go? Also... What's supercid?
I did port my number. It took a few minutes and everything was switched over. I had to manually program my apn for data to work. I am not getting 4g or lte though only hspa and its much slower in my area at least. Supercid is basically writing over your cid to allow other phones firmware and Rom. AT&T phones work perfect with straight talk and have working lte so I was going to trick my phone into thinking it was an AT&T model

Just so you guys know, MMS doesn't work for me on stock ROM with the stock SMS app or hangouts. But it works for when I use Textra or chompsms. Shouldn't be a problem if you have a custom ROM.
We won't get LTE unless you're with T-Mobile because this phone doesn't have the correct bands for att LTE

Straight talk SCH-S986C

So I snagged a straight talk galaxy S3. I've already got it rooted running official cm12 for the Verizon varient. Is it at all possible to get this thing to pick a verizon/page plus sim? From looking around I've come to the conclusion that the Verizon S3 is the most similar. What would be the options?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

There is a sim slot. I actually have Verizon contract. After flashing everything an changing a few settings I have talk, text and data but its steady roaming..I wonder if I'll get charged for roaming? Anyways I'm sure if everything is working there's gotta be a way to stop it from roaming.

Don't know why it worked but *228 just fixed my roaming problem. I thought you couldn't *228 a LTE phone? I know the straight talk S3 has 4G disabled but I'm still running a 4G LTE sim card. I'm wondering if the process they used is the same process page plus retailers used on 4G devices..because my girlfriend had a Verizon s3 that they had to flash to 3G so it can be used on pageplus..when she switched to a note 2 a few weeks ago they told her they offered Verizon's 4G coverage now and she would get it on her note no flashing required. Worked right outta the box. We took her old s3 and hooked it up for my mom. They said that it had to be flashed back to 4G so I'm wondering if straight talk flashed this phone to 3G only with flashing software..if so, is there a free program anywhere to do this? The CDMA workshop trial has never given me the outcome I was looking for.

If you are saying that you were on Verizon because you had the Verizon wireless showing in your status bar or because it said it in your phone somewhere then no you weren't on Verizon, your phone showed that stuff because it has that stuff in your build.prop, that doesn't mean you were on Verizon, the only way to actually be on Verizon is if you actually setup an account with them and activated the phone on their network. Supposedly Verizon won't let you activate a straight talk phone on Verizon account, this device is not able to carrier unlock and that's what you have to do to actually switch carriers and use your IMEI on another network. It shows SCH-I535 because of the build.prop, all of that Verizon stuff and the i535 stuff can be edited in the build.prop, that has nothing to do with who you actually have service with, that's just there because its written in the ROM.
