[Q] I just updated and now my shield is frozen on the boot splash - Shield Q&A

I never rooted or unlocked the bootloader, not sure what's up. I had a 32gb SD card in it if that matters.
Anyone know what I could try and do?

Try to flash stock from fastboot, maybe something on your system has been corrupted... Are you rooted or bootloader unlocked?

You can try to recover to the recovery image.
https://developer.nvidia.com/sites/default/files/akamai/mobile/shield/HowTo-Flash-Recovery-Image.txt
You can find the boot, system and recovery .img's here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2388870
The blob and tegra114-roth here
https://drive.google.com/?authuser=0#folders/0B7j6Imwr_sirRnl5MFRRR2sxRWM
I would upload the userdata.img, but it's too big for me to upload, and I don't think it is needed...

Guys, the OP mentioned that he has not unlocked/rooted his device, so he cannot flash the recovery image.
That should definitely not happen on an unlocked device. Can you at least see the splash animation? Things to try (in that order):
1) On the boot splash animation, connect SHIELD to your PC and try to run "adb logcat" to see if you can see what is crashing. Attach the log here if you can get it.
2) If you cannot use adb, reboot your SHIELD while holding the back and home buttons. This will bring you to the bootloader menu. Then connect to your PC and try to "fastboot erase userdata" and "fastboot erase cache" before doing "fastboot reboot". This will remove all your user data, so your SHIELD should boot again correctly provided the OTA went without any issue. You might not like the idea of losing your user data though.
3) Contact NVIDIA. You have not unlocked your SHIELD, just did a regular OTA. This is covered by the warranty so they should be able to help you.

Fixed that line for you.
If the device is locked getting Nvidia to fix the software should not be a problem.

I had the same problem. NVidia swapped out my Shield with a retail refurbished unit.

Happened to me but I shut it down using the nvidia button and let it sit for a few minutes and it booted.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.

i have got the same problem
its impossible to boot in 4.3. the only few times i got it, it tooks 10 ton 15 minutes
i go back to 4.2 and i had the same problem. the only way to get the shield back to normal is to format all (system, data, etc..) through cwmr
when i trie to update to 4.3 trought ota, i got the same problem and i have to repeat the proccess again to come back to 4.2
in 4.2 boots ok, and everything works, but i cant update
any ideas?

My boot-up problem seemed to have been caused by my 64GB SanDisk MicroSD card. When I pulled it out to transfer it to my replacement Shield, the original came up. Try pulling out your SD card before powering on if you are still having trouble.

hi, i tried to boot without the sd and i get the same result
stock in boot logo
i thing the problem its something related with the ota update an my boot.img
someone has access to boot, system and recovery img from update 63?
maybe if i install from bootloader i get something
thanks in advance

If you power on holding back and home, you will boot into a menu. If you go into Recovery, do you get any options? On mine, it would say "No Command" and be stuck there. If yours also says "No Command", you can't really load anything using recovery.
You should consider going here. You'll have to either login or create a login, but after that, you can submit your problem to NVidia. That's what I did, and they shipped me a new unit overnight with a prepaid label to send my unit back.

Hi, Thanks for your answer. Im able to update the shield throught fastboot. This is hoy i can downgrade from 4.3 to 4.2.
Moreover ,i cant get a new unit, cause i live in spain, (and i already unlock my bootloader)

[A700] bricked infinite boot loop

So starting from beginning, while playing some music, my A700 reboot and hang up in infinite loop of Acer and Iconia Tab logos. As Vol+Power was not responding, I sent it back to Acer for repair and received it back yesterday after they replaced motherboard (and microphone!?).
Cool.
But no, because after a couple of hours of re-installing, it reboot and finished in the same Logos loop, just after selecting Airplane mode.
So my question, can I re-flash this A700 with a complete clean stock ROM, as I have only access to Fastboot mod?
To reflash with fastboot, you'd need an unlocked bootloader. I wouldn't risk that if I were you.
It looks likes a hardware issue. A ROM contains drivers. Drivers control the hardware. When going into airplane mode, the drivers shut down some of the hardware components, like WIFI and Bluetooth. If you'd have a modded ROM, I'd say there's some driver issue which causes the tablet to crash (weird that it's stuck on bootloop, though). Since that's not the case, I'd say there's something wrong with your hardware.
To apply factory settings, did you do the right moves?:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1861092
How did you enter fastboot mode?
Note that there's only a slight difference in going into fastboot or the factory reset mode. It's only a Vol + and -.
I was asking because I already flashed (in November) my 'previous' A700 with a stock ROM (because JB OTA update failed) without unlocking anything (but using Recovery).
You are probably right, it may be an hardware fault as it does exactly the same as first time and that Acer Support replaced complete motherboard. However it was looking at me very strange that I could get two hardware fault in the row.
I will give a try to the factory reset (I did not knew the move), thanks for the tips.
As far as I know it's not possible to flash a stock ROM with fastboot without unlocking the bootloader. Instead, you have to rename the stock ROM to update.zip and put it on your internal storage and then flash it by using recovery (also a button trick).
It could be that it's still the same hardware problem. Maybe Acer didn't know what was wrong and just replaced the motherboard. It's a massive repairing service center, so they're not going to search for everything.
Oh, an important question:
Did Acer, or did they not reinstall your tablet after they "repaired" it?
If not, then it might just be that. It's like your home pc. When you change your motherboard, you might need to reinstall the thing (or re-activate Windows, but that's not relevant ) to prevent errors.
Good luck and I hope you succeed
Ps. For what it's worth, you can also try to reflash your device with a beta ROM (it's beta because there isn't a stock ROM available which you can flash without having the bootloader unlocked). You can download it here. Now I'm not quite sure if you can update your tablet then, so it's coming out of beta. To flash it, do whatever I said with the renaming to update.zip (to transfer the ROM, you can use an sd card. It might just look for update.zip on the sdcard too). Please keep in mind that I'm not sure if you can update your tablet so it'll come out of beta. If you are going to try this, please post your results here

Considering the same issue happened under the same circumstances, we can pretty much rule out hardware failure. (they claim to have changed the mainboard.
If you look at the Acer 700 troubleshooting tree, they followed procedures. Or perhaps they "claimed" to have changed the system board, when in reality they just re-flashed the rom over the top so they can make more money by the hour. A common practice.
So the issue to me, seems to be either a faulty rom, or, faulty player. Were you using a player from the Play Store?
Also, would help to know which OS you were on. ICS or JB?
As with re-installing a rom, you should be able to get to the stock recovery. In which case, you could try
a. Re-installing the stock version rom again (renamed as update.zip)
b. Install an update.zip compatible with your region.
There are 2 types of boot loop.
1. Iconia.... this is a boot animation loop (stuck at boot animation)
2. Tab continually re-boots over and over. This is a boot-loop
3. Although not considered a boot-loop, stuck at the Acer logo.
So which do you have?
More than likely you have animation loop. Which means the OS is corrupted somehow. If I understand you correctly.
As with fastboot OEM unlock, you can do the following;
Flash a custom recovery
Flash a kernel (boot.img)
Flash a complete system image. This is not like flashing a Rom. It's an image file generated from another user who has a working 700.
As with unlocking your bootloader, well, it depends on if you wish to get things fixed. Or to return it yet again to Acer Repair. Can't tell you what to do Mate. But if it were me, I would take matters into my own hands after previous attempts.
MD
So I tried the following (yes, it is inverted relative to theory);
- Press [vol +] + [power]
- As soon as the tablet vibrates, let go of power and play several times [lock]
=> Fastboot mod, displaying "Bootloader vJB-653b3d3: Starting Fasboot USB download protocol"
- Press [vol-] + [power]
- As soon as the tablet vibrates, let go [power] and play [lock]
=> no effect
And as reminder, Recovery is not reachable.

If you're running Jelly Bean, the bootloader has changed. This requires a different way of going in the recovery mode:

With JB there is a change on the A700 (can't test on A701):
Boot into recovery:

- Now the tablet vibrates a second time, let go [vol-] and press [vol+] quick
- Once the text that appears on the screen ("loading recovery kernel image"), let go [vol+].

Not really, first time it happened while playing music with google music player (reboot then loop).
Second time it was after setting the Airplane mode for night (reboot then loop).

I though the same but I found a 'technical paper' saying that board and microphone were changed, and both Wifi and Bluetooth Mac adresses have changed. So it seems they really changed motherboard.

Help, Goes straight to TWRP on startup

Hello Everyone,
I am a Noob, Yes. Please help. I was trying to install TWRP onto my TF300T. I installed it Via ADB. Had it installed with my stock ROM. I tried to do a backup so I could flash CM10. It said it wasn't mounted. I tried again and then it reboot and now goes straight to TWRP. I can get my device on ADB via the cmd screen but it says that the device is attached in recovery and my serial number is now 01233456789ABCD. Have I completely bricked my tablet? Is there anything I can do? I have been searching the forums for literally hours and am at wits end. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Sorry if this has been gone over time and time again but I can't figure it out. Please help. Thanks
Marc
To add,
When I try to do anything via fastboot it just hangs waiting for device. I can't get it to go to the fastboot page on my tablet, it just goes straight to the TWRP page.

Yes, that would be correct. So I managed to reset the device and cold boot back to a working device. Now i'm still wanting to flash a custom recovery and change ROMS to cyanogenmod (had it on my S1 and loved it) but am a bit nervous. How do I reset my partition and clear the old TWRP and flash a working version of CWR via fastboot or a version of TWRP that will work with my OTA rom. I thought I had done quite a bit of research before hand but am feeling a bit overwhelmed now. I don't want to go through another twelve hours of trying every trick I can find on the internet to unbrick my device.
Thanks
Just a few other things to add. So now when i have my device connected to my computer in normal function i can recognize it when I enter adb devices on my cmd prompt. Then I do the fastboot reboot bootloader which it then sends it into the fastboot screen. type in adb devices and it doesn't recognize the device anymore. I try the commands to install the cwm recovery.img and my cmd screen goes through the normal steps saying it's completed it. Then i try to reboot the device through fastboot and it freezes on the bootload screen with the green box no longer flashing on the rck box. Hold power button for six seconds to reboot and i have a working device again. So now i'm lost. How do I reset everything so I can start over, repartition so I can flash a custom recovery and carry on. any help is appreciated.
I don't know how you got yours back, even the bootloader cold-booting linux won't go into the OS for me.
That said, AFAIK, TWRP 2.4.4.0-4.2 or 2.5.0.0-4.2 are the only ones that will work with the 4.2.1 OTA update. Let me know if you somehow manage to get either on there because I can't seem to flash anything.

I tried flashing the new correct version of TWRP. it just freezes on the rck tab of the bootloader. It goes through the process on fastboot on my cmd prmt but does nothing on the tablet end. At least I have a working device on 4.2.1 just frustrating that TW didn't state that there is a 4.2 version not just a JB version. So now I can't get OTA updates and can't flash any custom or stock ROM's. So I'm permanently stuck with 4.2 but it's better than being stuck with a brick I guess. This isn't my first time rooting, flashing or working with ADB and fastboot. Did my research before flashing the custom recovery and thought I followed TW's steps very accurately. I hope that they update their site to stop a large number of people soft or hard bricking their devices. I at least can hold out hope that someone will figure out how to re install the bootloader. There has to be a fix as the rest of my device works so the motherboard isn't shot. Good luck. Let me know if anything or anyone figures it out.

I won't know how much it will cost until the unit is in their hands. I initiated my RMA online as well, they told me i will be contacted by phone after they examine it, I'm prepared to invest another 100 bucks as i got the unit for $299. I'll be hesitant to go much higher. I will post a number when i hear from them, if they haven't replied back to you.
I've got the same problem on my TF300T.
I'm going to try to get it working.
Not entirely sure what caused it, since I had used encryption in cm10.1 prior to flashing Asus stock 4.2.1.
BTW, I've been able to get back to fastboot by running adb reboot bootloader when TWRP is loaded.
Update: Seems to be that new 10.6.x.x bootloader... gotta love Asus :-/

Same issue for me after OTA. Just processed the OTA as normal and phone will not climb out of the Red M loop. Non rooted, locked device. Attempted to utilize RSD with a few flash files and no luck. Very inexperienced with this. Sorry to be so dense, just looking for any direction possible.

i wish i could help you but without knowing exactly what the ota flashed before failing, any advice i give has the real possibility of making your phone worse or possibly perma bricked. the problem is you are locked and we dont yet have a fxz for kk.
that being said, if you still want to try and fix it against my advice i will tell you what to try but I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF THIS BRICKS YOUR PHONE OR MAKES IT WORSE IN ANY WAY.
download this xml file http://www.mediafire.com/view/p217akcxwmijcr7/VZW_XT926_4.1.2_9.8.1Q_62_VQW_MR-2_VQW_CFC_DOWN.xml
download the 9.30.1 ota from sbf droid devs
extract it to a folder and DELETE the xml file, then copy the one above into the folder
make sure you have the latest rsd, i think its 6.1.5 (not positive)
load the xml file into rsd and flash as usual
if this does not work, there is no way to fix your phone until the kk fxz is leaked, assuming this doesnt make it worse.
6.1.6 is the newest RSDLite I've seen.
Go here if you haven't applied the OTA yet and your bootloader is locked.
http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/45494-how-to-xt926-upgrade-to-kitkat-ota/
If you have applied the OTA and you're locked, don't do it. You'll have to wait for the FXZ to come out. Otherwise, it will brick even further.
If you have applied the OTA AND your bootloader is UNLOCKED, then you can use the tool to flash back to stock 9.30.1.
I too am bricked. unrooted and locked. Ran the ota and when it reset, it now hangs at the red M. Can get into fast boot and recovery. Tried factory restore and wipe cache. Once I did that my phone now randomly boots to andy all opened up, waiting for me to press the buttons to go into recovery. If I leave it like that, it just reboots after a time and does it all over again . I'm going to assume the only way forward is the xfz file? Any body have an idea of when that might become available and where about I can pick it up? I.E. which forum might have it and will it be a new thread?

This has been posted many times. When installing the OTA manually via recovery, a few things happen:
The first time you apply the OTA in recovery, it replaces the recovery with a new recovery and reboots the phone. This new recovery requires a new key combo to get into it. The new key combo is vol-up + power.
So, after you attempt to apply the OTA the first time, you need to be around so when it reboots into the Andy screen, you can use the new key combo. Otherwise, if you leave it alone, it will reboot and then you'll see the red Moto logo which means you'll have to reboot the phone and then hold vol-up + power to get the boot menu and select "Recovery" and then go to the next step.
After getting back into the new recovery, you must apply the OTA again so it can continue to upgrade your phone. After this, you'll be upgraded to Kit Kit.

Right. By reading your earlier posts instructions I got into recovery. That is how I was able to factory reset and wipe cache. I'm talking about AFTER I did all that, instead of just being hung at red m screen, it hangs for a few seconds, then flickers, hangs a few more seconds, and then goes into andy screen. If I don't touch it for a few minutes, it reboots, and that same process starts over, ending with the andy screen again...Its like it WANTS me to be in recovery to fix it .
I noticed you also said to others that us lot are pretty much screwed until the fxz file is out, which I assume is this OTA as a zip so we can flash with recovery? Any idea when that will be coming out? and where should I look for it once its out?
Heck, because I was unrooted and locked and it was the official OTA from verizon, maybe I should go in to them and demand they replace my phone with the moto x. Though, I rather liked my razr hd and don't quite wanna give up on it...

No, the FXZ is the full kit-kat image, not an update like the OTA. The FXZ can be used to flash your phone back to full stock, whether you are locked or not. If you are locked, then you can only flash the version that is currently on your phone or newer. You cannot flash back to a previous version unless your bootloader is unlocked.
The ota is used to only update a previous version to the current version, in this case from JB to KK, but once it's applied, you cannot apply it again since you are already upgraded to that version. It's only an upgrade, not a full image like an FXZ.

I see, makes sense. Every days a school day I suppose. Thanks for the info. Guess I have to decide to either wait for the FXZ or go to verizon and see if they can get me a new phone.
Same thing happened to my wife, completely stock now stuck at red m. After calling verizon they suggested the factory reset which just gives you a boot to dead android guy to get into recovery on every boot. Then after a couple minutes just reboots and does the same thing, stuck in a loop. They then said it's not their software, rather Motorola's, so Verizon's only recourse is to sell me an overpriced refurb or upgrade to the edge plan. Screw them. I said unacceptable and they gave me a number for Motorola. Moto said that they put in a request to extend my factory warranty because it was the software update that caused the issue and they will let me know tomorrow. I understand stuff happens, but this is not acceptable when their harassing update causes thee issue. I knew I should've unlocked the boot loader on it when I had the chance.

Then you're almost there. At the "dead android" screen, press and hold vol up and then press power and then release both buttons. This gets you into recovery.
At this point, reinstall the OTA via the recovery so it can start into the 2nd stage and then you'll be done.

I don't know how to reinstall the OTA via stock recovery. I tried it do the install update.zip option and nothing happened. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Did you download it to your phone? If so, it needs to be on your external SD card and you choose the option to install from there. You'll have to navigate to where you stored it on the external SD card.
If you didn't download it, then you should be able to push it via ADB PUSH when in the recovery. Just hook up your phone to your PC and do it that way. Just obtain the OTA from this thread. Somewhere, someone provided a link to it. Download it to your PC and then do an adb push to the external SD card of the OTA and then install it that way.

Thanks for the tips. I must have done something wrong when I installed adb, I could not see the phone with the adb devices command, yet I could see the phone in the Matt utility as well as in RSD Lite. I'll give it a shot again, can't hurt. Called Moto and they escalated it and are sending me a replacement device.

[Q] Razr HD Stuck in loop after trying to sideload kitkat

Hello,
I have a stock RAZR HD and I'm living in Germany. I tried sideloading KitKat on the device since I won't get the OTA update but during the upgrade the device rebooted and is now in a boot loop. In recovery, no matter what key combination I use, I won't show any of the menues to update, factory reset etc. Is the device a lost cause? I was reading through the Droid Razor HD Utility 1.32 and that seems like a way to recover, but I'm a little hesitant.
Any guidence would be greatly appreciated.

At the recovery image, press and hold vol up then press power and hold both for about 2 seconds and then let go of both buttons. You'll be in the new recovery. Install the ota again to complete the upgrade.
It's a two stage install. The first time you install the OTA, it replaces the recovery if it senses it's an older recovery and then it reboots you back to the recovery image of Andy lying on his back with a red ! over him. This is where you must do the vol up + power to go back into the recovery. They changed the key combination on is with the new recovery. If you don't go into recovery, it will then proceed to attempt and boot into your phone but it won't be able to so it will reboot again.
Once you are back in recovery after the reboot, go and install the OTA again. This time, it will upgrade your phone to KitKat. It could take up to 15 minutes so be patient.

dont ust the razr utility, if parts of the ota flashed (sounds like it did) before you got stuck, it will just continue to bootloop.
were you running the stock us verizon xt926 software before you sideloaded the ota?
is your bootloader locked or unlocked?

with your bootloader being locked and you cant get into recovery (im assuming you tried Ibolski's tip and still cant get in), you should wait for the fxz to get leaked. sorry but any other path is risky and likely to make your phone unrecoverable.

Hi, ok i didn't see or try that trick. Yes if I hold vol up and hit power, i can now get into the recovery menu. I think though I need to use a different file to upgrade to Kitkat. Is there a copy out there that doesn't require all the tweaking to that i can just load onto my sd card and apply? I think that's what's messed this up is the file i used I just tried to install like previous files.

there is no other file.
you need to flash the ota again in recovery.
the file first flashes the new recovery, then reboots to install the remaining files.
what you are experiencing is normal. flash again and the install should complete.

When i try to install from SD it shows:
install /sdcard ...
Installation aborted
Not sure if this is because of the low battery or not. I started the process from http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/45494-how-to-xt926-upgrade-to-kitkat-ota/ however RSD never shows my device, however I know it works as from within the RAZR HD utility, it sees the device.
I'm really not sure what to try next.

being locked you cant use that link to fix it as some of the KK files (recovery at least) should have flashed and it will brick you.
also, if any kk files flashed razr utility will brick you
im going to have to revert back to what i said in post 5 at this point. sorry im not sure what else you can try that wont make this worse.
as for the charging, if it wont charge, you will need a moto factory adapter (google it) to flash the fxz when it leaks. they are $10 from team black hat and bypass the battery while flashing. it will not charge the battery it just powers the phone directly for those with a low/dead battery.

Frozen on Google screen and recovery splash

Unlocked, rooted, TWRP, Cataclysm Final Lollipop (my phone never played nice with any MM ROM I tried, so I just went back to this and have been great ever since)
My phone has been rock stable for months, today I pull it out of my pocket and the screen is black. I turn it back on and it freezes on the Google screen with the unlock logo.
I can get into bootloader via power+voldown, but if I launch recovery it gets past the Google screen but then freezes on the TeamWin page.
Any suggestions, please? Searches intimate power button issues, but given I get no bootloops, I can turn the phone off reliably by holding the power button down, and it freezes at the same point consistently, it's hard for me to think that's the issue in my scenario, too. Thank you!
As an update, I used fastboot to successfully flash the newest version of TWRP, just to be sure, but it still gets stuck in the same spot, as does trying to boot normally.
Try flashing a stock ROM including userdata.img file.

Thanks for the suggestion. Is there any way to get my personal data off before I do this?
I guess beggars can't be choosers, but I'd hate to lose anything I don't have backed up already if it ends up being another issue after all (the power button, etc.).
A corrupted ROM can prevent a clean, freshly-installed recovery from launching properly?
Thanks again.
Try flashing different version of TWRP? Maybe one of them will allow you to mount the data partition and copy off your data.
While trying to flash the (stock) new system images, I keep getting "remote: flash write failure" and/or "remote: failed to erase partition." This is via a toolkit or manually via fastboot.
The bootloader remains unlocked through all this
It's especially odd, since now I'm getting it on my recovery partition, which I was able to write to earlier today.
A cursory search of this forum suggests I'm SOL unless I replace the whole motherboard, at which point I might as well get a new phone. Do you (all) concur?
Last ditch thought: I went jogging when it went dead--outside chance a connection to the memory on the motherboard got jostled and could be reattached? Or is it fried?
Continued thanks.
The memory is soldered into place but it is possible that something happened during your jog. I also jog with my nexus 5 for 20 to 30 km per week and have done so for the past year without any issues.
