[Q] How can I restore after booting into recovery? All contacts, apps, sms lost - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hello,
I booted into recovery using the Down Volume and Power button. It seems to have restored the interface to factory default, although all my pics on the phone and SD card are there.
I cant find any contacts,SMS or previous apps. The app files are on the device. I can see them from my PC, but they are not installed.
After booting into recovery mode I just returned there a couple times. Finally I was able to boot normally, but into a fresh UI.
How can I restore or get back my (wife's) contacts and SMS's? I think that they should be there on the phone still. They were not backed up.
Thanks.

Is the phone rooted? Are you using clockwork mod recovery? Contacts are usually backed up with a google/gmail account. Go into her settings>sync settings and hopefully her gmail account is there. If it is, just click on it and her contacts should restore. You can also backup your apps through the gmail account as well. I believe the playstore has an option to automatically update via wifi, try looking in there for options about that. If her contacts were not backed up via gmail, then they are probably lost. I'm going to assume that you do not have a nandroid backup on the device via CWM that you could roll back to?

Thanks for your reply. No, it is not rooted. No CWM (yet). It seems there is no backup of the contacts because syncing was off. I used the phone first and then passed it to my wife, so she did not want all my contacts, she just managed contacts manually. That is why syncing was off. I kept my google account on the phone to manage apps.
I do not have a Nandoid backup. I looked at Helium, but it does not seem to work on Android 2.2.2. How would you recommend I back up the device to prepare for a custom ROM like CM7.2?
I am more worried about her manually added contacts and SMS's.
I did not install anything like CWM yet, just booted into recovery mode. Then the phone started asking me questions like in the initiall setup ei "Add a Google Account"
Is there a way that I can extract the contacs and SMS's from a directory on the phone. (Most of her data and directories seem to be there when viewed from a PC as USB storage).
Why would this happen from a simple reboot into recovery mode? Did I hold the Volume Down and power too long?
Thanks,

To be honest I do not know if there is way to extract the lost contact information. I am only knowledgeable about recovery protocols with a rooted device utilizing a custom recovery software such as cmw. I have never entered recovery prior to flashing cwm. There are plenty of guides in the stickies that show how to flash cwm via nvflash and guides on how to use it in order to flash a custom rom like cm7.2

Your contacts are unfortunately gone. With the stock recovery holding the buttons too long equals a data wipe which is where contacts and such are stored.
Been there, done that. I had a similar situation on my wife's phone and ended up creating a dummy Google account for her so contacts would be backed up automatically.
The noob says:
In the absence of a valid argument, 2+1=3 may be used to explain why the g2x did not get the ICS update!

I was hoping you would jump in here mansa! Thanks!

Shiny new Nexus S backup question

Is there an app like Titanium Backup for a non-rooted SNS? Do I really need to backup if I don't root the phone? I would like to backup before I start the playing (sorry for the newbie question but I am a recent convert from i****e 4).
Thanks in advance, Jeff
You can boot into Clockwork Recovery (with fastboot) and do a nandroid backup, all without flashing anything.
If you have no intentions of rooting odds are you don't need a backup app. When you first set up your phone you can check the box that will backup with google and in the event you get a new phone all your apps will be there. Anything you purchase on the market will automatically backup to your account even if you don't check off the box. Welcome to Android, I'm sure you will enjoy your experience.

Thank icandy75 for the quick reply. Is that data (pics, contacts, bookmarks, etc.) and apps if I check the box? Is the backup encrypted or passworded? BTW I am currently using a Samsung Intercept for the last 5 weeks with 2.1 and temporary root so I really like Titanium Backup to wipe data and being able to reverse things. Can the backup to Google do anything like that, I am suspecting not.
P.S. So far the experience has been wonderful even after using iPhones for 3.5 years.

Thanks for the quick reply. I assume these are not as robust and flexible as Titanium Backup. Is it inevitable that I will really just want to root to get better apps? Sorry but new to the wonderful world of Android. BTW I am only going to use the SNS via WiFi for now.
Thanks for the info., help and advice,
Jeff

Pics are not backed up but you can back those up manually to you computer without root. Contacts are backed up to your Gmail account for easy access. It will also back up your wifi passwords but not your sms. There really is no reason not to root on this phone. It's very easy to do and reversible plus root gives you the ability to use a bunch of apps like TB. If you get into flashing roms I would suggest getting the paid version. It makes it a breeze to switch from one rom to next and gives you a few more options like dropbox sync and the ability to freeze apps.
use mybackup pro for backups if you dont have root.
backs up all sms, mms, android home, system settings, call logs, music playlists, bookmarks, dictionary, call logs, applications (doesnt back up the data/settings inside the app). lol am i missing something?
you can save the backups online or to your sd card
Yeah, My Backup pro is the only other app that I know of that people liked for non-rooted devices.
Clockwork Recovery Backup
I know this thread is about a month old, but...
I have to say, if you want to do any rooting or ROM flashing later the Clockwork Recovery backup is probably the better way to go.
It wasn't said earlier, but if you have adb and fastboot already installed/config'd on Ubuntu (but should be the same commands on Mac OSX - not sure about Win):
Code:
adb reboot-bootloader
fastboot boot <path to recovery file>/recovery-clockwork-herring.img
I already unlocked my bootloader prior to this, so all the data I have has been wiped previously and I reloaded manually.
Vol Down to "backup and restore" and hit power button. First option is Backup. Just hit power button and let it do the backup. This may take a bit of time. The recovery is not perm and will be gone when you reboot.
The backup is stored on your "SD" partition under "clockworkmod/backup/[backup date]"
You should be able to use the same thing to restore at a later time if needed, selecting "restore" instead of the "backup" option.
There is a app on the market called* backup everything*. I've never used it but description says works for non rooted phones.

Just to clarify commands, specifically for Mac OSX:
(These commands are assuming you've downloaded this file (http://www.mediafire.com/?qoz9f6e8fbx8zs0) and unzipped it to your desktop)
Code:
~/Desktop/adb-fastboot/adb reboot bootloader
Code:
~/Desktop/adb-fastboot/fastboot oem unlock

~/Desktop/androidsdk/tools/fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.5-crespo.img

[Q] Changing Primary Email Acccout?

i own a rooted epic 4g and my primary gmail account password got changed. now ive lost access to the android marketplace.
i looked around online and the only solution ive seen is to 'factory data reset'. i dont want to reset my phone, though. ive also tried going to my sync list and deleting my primary gmail but it wont let me.
does anyone know of an easier solution? if not, i suppose ill just do a nand backup, reset my phone, and then nand restore everything. or will that not even work?
please help!

bump again.
update. i went ahead and did a nand backup, rebooted, factory reset, rebooted, input new gmail accound info in wizard, and then restored data. when i rebooted after that, it was still stuck on my last email. so that didnt work. im getting tired of this. someone please help.

Add a second account through Accounts & Sync, then delete the first account.
Or, when you restore (I'm assuming through Titanium Backup), don't restore system apps/data, just user apps.
Couldn't you just reset your Gmail password? Then, open the Gmail app - it should ask you for your password - and input your new password.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
i did add the second account but when i go to delete my original email account, it says i cant delete it.
no, ive always used just the basic nand backup and restore. and i cant access the app store to download titanium because i need an functioning email account to do it.
yes, i tried to restore my password but apparently i didnt provide enough accurate information. i could only answer a select few questions i actually knew.
Go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications
Find junk with Google in its name, click on it, choose clear data. Wash, rinse, repeat until done.
Here's a link to Titanium Backup from my Dropbox: http://db.tt/K2lwLwm
Download & install it. Then, backup all user apps and data. If you've already done a nandroid backup, just do a factory reset or go into recovery and wipe & flash a new rom.
When the rom boots, put in your other Gmail account that you know the password for and that'll be your new primary Gmail account. You can then restore your apps with Titanium Backup.

just curious, will this delete all my numbers? i should write them all down just in case, though.

if your numbers are backed up and visible in your gmail contacts, you should be fine.

Retrieving contacts from nandroid

I wanted to get my wife's phone current and on CM7 (she was still on a rooted froyo), so I did a backup via cwm, flashed a stock rom, flashed stock recovery, unrooted. Then I did a LGUpdater update (worked fine :O), then flashed cwm and cm7.
Somewhere along the way, her contacts were lost, and for some reason, weren't all on her google contacts list. There are only 57 contacts on her google contact list, but she had many more than that. So, I went and reloaded the froyo backup from before unrooting and upgrading (did a factory reset too), but it still required me to re-sync with google and only retrieved the contacts that are on her google.com/contacts list.
Is there anyway I can get into the froyo backup and retrieve her complete set of contacts? I thought that they'd come back when I restored that backup, but asked me to re-enter her gmail and password (like it was starting fresh).
I don't know how she got into a state where her contacts weren't syncing with google, but I imported the contacts from the SIM card incase she was somehow saving them there, but that didn't get them.
Any recommendations? Another way to get the contacts by going into the rooted froyo backup itself, or perhaps a way to reflash that backup and have it "remember" the contacts?

[Q] Flashing ROMs & Titanium Backup

Hey guys
I've recently rooted my 9023i Nexus S and am currently running Codename Android 1.4.0 with the included Kernel.
I did flash and test Matr1x kernel and one other which I can't remember the name of but in both cases I went ahead and reflashed the ROM to get the original kernel back as I felt the phone became unstable and sluggish after a while on the custom kernels.
I use Titanium Backup to backup and restore my apps and system settings which worked beautifully when I was just flashing the same ROM again, but I am wondering if I would like to try a different ROM (would be based on ICS 4.0.3 or 4.0.4) if I could restore my apps AND my system settings with Titanium Backup?
I have seen around here that I should only restore apps and not system settings when going to a different rom which I totally understand, but I would love to be able to keep my call logs, sms, contacts and especially Email (Exchange) settings between ROM flashes.
Is this possible?
Thanks!
I never really liked Titanium Backup, but you shouldn't have an issue, I believe. You should never lose your contacts as long as you are signed into Google. After you flash a new rom, sign back in and your contacts should be there. As for system settings, I have no idea. Wifi settings, etc shouldn't be a problem. Go ahead and try it. Thats what Clockwork Recovery and Titanium Backup are for. If it doesn't work, then restore back to what you had. Its best to learn from trial and error.

Thanks, I did do it like that the first couple of times when I flashed a rom, but I really like not having to redo the exchange settings and resync all my email and exchange contacts (all of my contacts come from exchange, none from Google) and also not having to resign into all of my services (Facebook etc.)
I guess I'll just do some tests and see how it goes
Restore apps. Leave the system stuff alone.

That's the answer I was expecting
But do you think it's ok to manually restore some settings, for example email settings, rather than doing a batch restore on all settings?
I see a backup in Titanium Backup for Email 4.1 and Exchange Services 4.1 which I assume would include all my emails and settings, right?
You could try restore data only on those. If you get a bunch of force closes .....
The emails are stored on the email server. You log into Gmail/Hotmail/work .. the emails will sync.
If you want to screw with it. Make a current Nandroid of your system. Restore what you want. Screw up ...restore Nandroid. Works... smile
Thanks guys
Tried it yesterday, didn't work
One other question... When restoring apps+data after a flash do you sign into Google and then restore or do you restore and then sign into Google?

Correct me if i'm wrong but with CNA you need to flash Gapps manually. If you don't flash it, you wont have market or anything, so you wont be able to sign in will you?
What i do is just leave google apps alone and flash my user apps. Then when you flash a rom, flash gaps, sign in, then restore user apps.
Yes it's a bit of a pain to reconfigure gmail etc, but most of the data is synced online so it shouldnt be too bad.

[Q] Android.process.acore has stopped

So there are multiple threads on this but I don't see one specific to the Verizon S3.
I recently tried to make the move to a new rom. I have tried both synergy and beans14. On both of them I run into this error and my contacts will not sync with google. I have tried to clear data in contacts and contacts storage with no success. I even tried do a factory reset back to a new rooted stock image using the guide found in section 6 of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709
From there i did another factory reset, complete cache wipes. I think flashed a recovery and tried installing the Beans14 rom again, and the issue is STILL THERE. I tried Beans because there was some talk that backup assistant could be the root of the issue and i beans does not contain this app...
Any idea what the hell is going on? I
If i revert back to my backup before trying to flash these roms I do not have the issue.

Yes the phone itself, try going into settings->application manager->running application->contacts then select "clear cache option" if you see contacts storage under running application clear the cache for that as well. If that doesn't work backup your contacts first and then under the two applications I just mentioned select the "clear data" option. If that still doesn't fix your problems try running the fix permissions utility found in ROM manager. Let me know if you need more help

I have tried all this to no avail. I have also tried fixing permissions within recovery
This issue usually shows up when there is an issue with your contacts. Do you have any apps that can affect your contacts? Mr. Number is one that comes to mind that when it is restored to the phone, can cause the error to show.
You can try to back up your contacts to the sd card. Delete your contacts from the phone, and confirm delete from Google. Then after a wipe, if it tries, do not restore from Google, import from the sd card. Before restoring apps, make sure you don't see the error anymore when opening the contact list. Then restore apps. If it happens again, pay special attention to what apps were restored to find any potential trouble makers.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. I tried to see if this would be an issue with CleanROM as well. Something went terribly wrong flashing that, and now i have a hard bricked phone. So it will be some days before I can even see if this works...
