[Q] Removing Apps from Custom ROMs - T-Mobile Sidekick 4G

Although I had rooted my SK4G a while back, it took me a while to get the courage to flash a ROM.
But yesterday, I successfully flashed MeMory. First off, many thanks to TheLastSidekick. He did such a better job than TMobile devs.
I could go on and on about his great work, but my only complaint is about Lightening Launcher which I can not warm to. I purchased and installed Holo Launcher Pro and would like to get rid of LL. Forgive my noob question, but are apps such as these removable in a custom ROM? Or do I have to freeze them with a third-party app. Or is LL a necessary component of the OS, used or not?
For that matter, I wouldn't mind getting rid of the stock browser, either. But again, I don't want to break anything.
Again, especially, thank you, LastSideKick,
Jake

adb shell
cd system/app
ls
rm eachappyouwanttoremove.apk
When your finished reboot
So no, not needed if you have another launcher
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Thank you for a quick, very helpful response.
Been running MeMory for two days now, and have yet to see the same problems I had w/ the rooted stock ROM: the maddening delays when trying to get to Phone, the occasional inability to physically answer a call, and the general slowness going from app to app.
Memory managment seems much better as well.
I hate that cliche "breathed new life into my phone," but MeMory really has
Jake

I've been using MeMory for almost a year with only one complaint: the JB keyboard does not work. Does it work on your phone?
In addition to using ADB, you can use a 3rd party app like Root App Delete by TopDev to remove system apps (those that came with the custom ROM). There's also a mode to disable an app first to make sure your phone works without it.

I have noticed crashing w/ JB keyboard. I must admit, I didn't pay much attention since I always use the physical KB. Thanks for the Root App Delete tip. I may look into that or just blast away with ADB and delete LL. But I would like to test the removal of the stock browser to see how phone functions without that.
Jake

I usually use the physical keyboard, too, but sometimes it's more convenient to use the screen keyboard. You can install the keyboard of your choice (Swype, Swift, Perfect Key, etc.) and then remove the JB keyboard.
I deleted the stock browser and installed a different browser with no problems.

Thanks much for your follow-up. I'm glad to hear that stock browser can be removed.
Jake

You can just disable them by renaming the extension, in case you need to have them in the future...
On the Droid2 I had to rename them *.bapk, as renaming them .bak, or *.apk.bak didn't work... VZ was wise to my first attempt, preemptively.

Here's the interesting thing: deleted gmail, stock browser successfully. Could not delete LL. I removed its apks, but it's still available in Apps and still starts. Is it hidden someplace else? Or really burned into the ROM?
Jake

Go to app store there is a app call /system/bin
This app will make all per programmed apps like YouTube or even play store deleteable
Then you just have to go to your settings apps look for launcher and delete..
Also ics keyboard is really good IMO . don't know if it works or not for the rom

Sorry I am use to going into bin folder

Ah, okay. In the meantime, I had installed "Uninstall" which is a system app remover and it finally remove LL.
Jake

/system/bin isn't an app, its a system folder. You uninstall apps from there. An app that does this uninstall system process is the donate version of titanium backup.

Hello everyone, I am looking for advice/solution from all of you genius people.
I have decompiled an Android Pie rom. I want to delete preinstalled apps from it (bloadtware). However, when I am deleting apps from Product/app folder, they're coming back in Rom and still working on device. What could possibly making them to be installed again?
I am working on Slimbox Rom and trying to customize it for Radxa Zero.
Thanks

Lets Golf 2

I actually like and paid for this app but since rooting and installing GummyCharge I don't have it and can for the life of me figure out how to get a working copy. I could use some help.
Thanks,
Brad
Did you pay for it through the market or through the app?
Through the App. I can't find it listed on Market. Couldn't find it in V-Cast Apps either.
Try going to the game's website (http://www.gameloft.com/smartphone/lets-golf-2/) and logging in with whatever info you used during the purchase. They should have a record of it.
Even if I bought it through Verizon? It was billed to my Verizon Wireless account.
The developer should still have a record. They had to be the one to bill it to verizon and had to have known what number to bill to
Charge Posted
The record of us buying it isn't the problem, the problem is that with the rom(gummy charged) it's taken out and also it's not in the toolbox, I want it too, I paid for it, I got my media hub back from the toolbox, but I can't find let's golf 2 either, maybe I can find an apk somewhere.

I have the exact opposite problem you have. I can't seem to get rid of it. Every time I uninstall it, it reappears in my settings>applications>manage applications list (but not in the apps page where you run everything) I can't actually play it though... and I don't know where the apk would be.
couldn't you pull it from one of the stock roms around. Isn't there a a full odin leak?
You could always just google around and find a lets golf 2 apk file...it shouldn't be too hard honestly.
I did find a copy and installed it. the only problem it didn't fit the screen. I don't know how to pull a file from a ROM.

You're not the only one with that problem lol. I've flashed roms, restored apps, and then go into manage apps and am like WTF! that wasn't on my phone when i created the backup.
I have the opposite problem as you, I want to get rid of it. I uninstall it but every time I reboot my phone it comes back...any suggestions? Already tried deleting it with titanium pro and still came back.

Bump. Just wondering if anybody has figured out how to delete this app - no matter what I try it keeps reinstalling itself. On gummy charged 1.91 EE4, with pbj kernel. I have tried tb uninstall, uninstall from task manager, freeze in tb. It is really annoying. Thanks for the help.

I have a thought. Go into System/App folder. See if it is there. If not look in the Data/App folder. I believe the name is something like com.gameloft.android.GAND.GloftLG2P.ML-1.apk. If it is rename it or delete it.
I deleted it out of the dalvik cache, the /data folder and the /preinstall folder. After a reboot, this is what shows up:
http://db.tt/UTtW58Y
(dropbox as I don't know how to use the forum app to upload photos)
I can't find it in any more folders....it's super annoying...

Yea it isn't in there. I have never had thus happen with an app before. I deleted my titanium backup of it also. I guess I will just try and ignore it....

Has anyone figured out how to delete this game yet? Like other people the game just keeps coming back after I reboot. I'm sure there are other more important issues out there but if anyone knows how to get ride of this game I'd appreciate it.
Thanks
Update - downloaded root explorer from the market
1) goto preinstall/apps
2) Delete the game
3) reboot
4)Delete from your backup aswell
Looks the game has been permanently removed. found the info on android central post by noobsickle

[Q] Bloat freezing

Hi guys. I'd like to ask you for some suggestions regarding removing bloat from the Note.
Which apps are most useless, resource consuming and at the same time safe to get rid of?
My intention is to freeze the crap out of my phone to make it snappier.
Any opinions appreciated
Here's a great list of preinstalled apps and what they do. It was made for the GSII, but most of it is still applicable to the Note.
spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_US&hl=en_US&key=0Ag43oj7rLQP4dENZcmhGN0ZUa3pHSENVeXlqUm5vV0E&single=true&gid=0&output=html
That's very helpful, thank you!
Excellent list bookmarked, thanks.
Can I freeze the bloatware without rooting? I'm tired of rooting and flashing my phones and would like to wait for ICS to be installed via Kies.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
No, you need root to freeze apps.
I totally get where you're coming from, but I'm sure we've got many months ahead of us before Samsung releases ICS. Just think of it as a little bit of effort for long term performance benefits.

I took out the usual suspects i removed from all my previous galaxy devices using root explorer and placing them into a folder on sd card incase of any issue, took out about 20 or so last night with no provlems and will hunt down the oddly named APKs that are in the system folder that i wont need and which however did not appear in the apps draw (non system related apps)
For example, Zinio was preinstalled on my device in System/Apps however was not present at all in the apps lists.
Fair enough, I like having a clean app drawer so I delete everything lol i deleted probably 50+ things last night (apps, widgets, etc)

How to detach an app from the Play Store

Right, I'm a PowerAMP pro user, but with a pretty old phone. The latest app is working but it's slow and sometimes lags. The poweramp site also offers the old 1.4 version which works right for me. Now, all is fine and dandy but I;m a bit annoyed by the app always showing up there to be updated. So I searched for a method to detach the app from the market and learnt that the bug has been solved long ago and apps can't be detached. So I tried changing the app's signature, of course with no luck, my android dev skills being close to absolute zero.
So I ask you, is there any way to do this? I am not pirating the app, so don't worry
I'm also trying to convince the developer to make an unsigned version of the app specifically for old timers like me, but with no success until now..
Just use LBE Privacy guard and freeze internet connection permission for this particular app..
So it will not connect to net and not telling you that new version is available..
we all should be polite enough to press thanks for anyone who helped US.

If it doesnt need to connect to the internet for anything else you could use droidwall to block it from accessing the playstore
If your rooted you could use blackmart to download the app and never have to update it
Or see the updates notifications saying there's an update

I know Titanium Backup can detach apps, though I am not sure if it is available in the free version. However, I do recommend the paid version of Titanium Backup anyway.

On a related note, is there a way to remove apps from the "My Apps"list? It is really annoying to have to scroll through a list of apps containing tons of apps that you may have tried for a while and then uninstalled when you need to reinstall something. And why is the "My Apps" list in random order and not alphabetical?

As far as I know (and after some quick Googling), there is no way to remove any apps from the giant "My Apps" list. However, I use the Appbrain android market replacement, and it lets you customize your lists and sort them better. You can remove devices from view though.

I feel you, man. I'm also annoyed with apps that just keep running in the background no matter what I do. In my case, these are apps like Facebook and Google Maps. What I do with them, since there are instances where I actually need them to, is just freeze them using Titanium Backup and then defrost them when I want or need to use them. It's a bit cumbersome but at least I can have the best of both worlds - use of the apps when I need them and said apps not using precious resources when I don't. < via xda app>

This is exactly what I do as well. I have them on my phone (because downloading when you need them is silly), but use TB and freeze them. You don't ever see them but they are there for when you need them. Weather apps, FB, Poweramp, etc. They are always running stealing RAM and battery.

A tip for both of you guys, if you don't know:
You can create a widget with Titanium Backup, select Titanium Backup (Actions), Action, scroll up a bit and select Freeze/Defrost/Launch an app. Select the app and choose Facebook or any other app you want to freeze.
What will this do? When you click the 1x1 widget, it will defrost the app and automagically launch it. When you exit and click it again, it will freeze the app. Reclicking it will defrost and launch and so on. Makes it much less cumbersome.

Go to Play Store, purchase Titanium Backup Pro..the app. will freeze, uninstall, backup all your apps in a click or two, (after setup on your device) or it will backup one app at a time of your choice..without Root, SafeStrap, Root Explorer, Titanium Backup Pro, a device is so limited, the XT1080M has awesome power, once it's unleashed with the above mentioned apps..and SafeStrap, I cannot bear to think, not having SS..but Root (as you are) must be obtained first..Rooting your device opened up a whole new, way more powerful device..You will not regret gaining Root..
Advice..stay on 4.2.2_12.15.15..wait until KK is proven stable, and can be Rooted (if ever)..KK can be rooted now..but flaming hoops have to be jumped thru to gain Root..and the chance of bricking your device is very high..once on KK, there is no return to JB..

I just got my Droid Maxx and have not rooted it yet. But I have used TB a lot on other devices. Just my preference but I never uninstall. I just freeze the stuff I don't want. The reason being I've had a couple of instances in the past where I thought I didn't need something but doing away with it killed something unexpected. For example on my old phone (Droid 3) I figured I did not need the built in voice mail app because I had my voice mail set to go to Google Voice. But I quickly discovered that freezing the built in voice mail also caused the dialer to not work...so I couldn't make any calls. But since it was just frozen, all I had to do was unfreeze it. . Another example is when I froze the camera app because I was using a third party app. With the built in camera app frozen, the video camera app didn't work either. I have no clue why but it must be reliant on the built in camera app somehow. Not being a developer myself, I don't always (make that usually don't) understand the inter-dependencies so freezing is a quick, simple, and completely safe method that gets the job done and is easy to undo any changes that cause a problem.
Sorry I can't help you with uninstall since I don't do that.

No need to apologize at all! Thanks for the input you've given, the thread has almost 150 views and only a few people have taken a moment to reply so I'm thankful for that in itself I'll look into freezing as well. As long as it removes it from my app list and it makes sure it won't run in the back ground, I'm happy with that!

Thanks for the input you've given, the thread has almost 150 views and only a few people have taken a moment to reply so I'm thankful for that in itself I'll look into freezing as well. As long as it removes it from my app list and it makes sure it won't run in the back ground, I'm happy with that!

I used to delete the system apps as well bit I don't bother anymore and here is why. Your system partition is separate from the SD partition meaning if you have say 20 gigs on SD and delete a gig of system apps your SD memeory won't increase. All it will do is make the OS smaller but it doesn't matter you can't use that memory anyway. Just freeze what you don't need and forget about it.
