[Q] Storage problem in CM10.1 - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm running CM10.1 in my P3110 and I notice that it is missing some storage..
As you can see I attachments, I use only 1.3GB with apps and 300mb with miscellaneous files... It's missing around ~~1.5Gb on internal storage. :silly:

Looks like there are files in there that occupy memory. Maybe they come from apps that you have uninstalled but you didnt clear their cache? Connect your tab to pc and see what kind of files these are. Big files are usually found in folder Android/data and obb. Also the status bar under storage should be like 2/3 as you have 1.5gb free out of 4.5gb, but its like 1/3.
Your last option is to do a wipe data/factory reset and you gonna have the lost space back.

I'll look for any of this files you said....
Sent from my GT-P3110 using xda app-developers app

I didn't found any strange files or directories, the only thing in /obb was Dead Trigger files that I actually use it.
In recovery, I tried "free nandroid space" and now it shows storage normally, I got 3.02 GB free space

Nice find! Next time it happens to me or to someone else i know now what it is.

[Q] storage problem/free space -- what is taking up so much??

So starting off with this phone I know it doesn't have the best internal storage. When apps are moved to the SD some of the app stays behind on the internal storage, I know that. I have had 2 shifts. My first one i dropped, cracked the screen, and the insurance gave me a new one. On my first shift at the time I had about 70mb of free space left when I sent it in. Before sending it I made a titanium backup and restored that on my shift I have today. When I restored it I had about 120mb of free space. (NOT THE PROBLEM READ ON)
So the point is something in the system is causing massive storage to fill up over time, and its not apps. I have force moved apps and that only helps a little. Is it a certin cache that I can clear? please help!
At the moment I have 60mb of free storage, that is with the app cache cleared through App2SD
Right I have the following : System ROM 219MB , Internal 222MB , SD Card 8.32 GB . When you long press on an app in TB it should give you the option to move to SD card. You shouldn't have to force move an app. When you restored all your apps did you restore apps and data? Or just the app? Also after restoring with TB you need to make sure the app was restored to the correct place. There's an option I usually check in the preferances before I restore all my apps. It restores to the previous location you had the app. Hope that helps.
I restored the apps and data... This isn't a problem with tb, its a problem with some storage/cache something building up in the system
No I'm not using Tapatalk... I'm using the XDA Premium app, cause I got balls.
My email took up a lot of storage on my old hero because everytime I deleted something it still stayed on a new folder called imap/trash... it was taking up about 50mb so you might want to look into that

In your sd card or internal? There was a folder on my sd called .trashes and it had everything I had deleted on my sd. Where exactly is it located? Ill look in root explorer.

Don't know if your restoring SMS with something. But if your are sometimes that takes up hella space. Did a phone that had over 25MB of SMS messages restore back onto it on internal mem.
i will see, i also use a tool called disk usage. you have probubly heard of it but it maps out everything and the amount of space it takes up. you can narrow the results to a certin cache or whatever. ive seen that apps like pandora are taking up space in the dalvik cache. Its only like a mb or 2 but still. do you know anything about apps storing things in the dalvik?
what is the dalvik even for anyway?
I've been trying to go back to stock today, so I've wiped a few times, but I've got 430MB total space internal, with 366MB free
and.....
i dont understand what this has to do with this thread

I beleive dalvik cache gets recreated everytime you reboot. But, about Pandora is it on the SD Card? Or internal mem? I listen to a TON of music. When I had Pandora on internal it was up to 12MB .So I moved it to the SD card, only 536KB on internal now.
My app is on the SD but it is storing over 1mb on internal
If you have DiskUsage go to the [root required] section and press 'App Storage'
if you can find pandora you will see that most of it is stored in the dalvik cache
Sorry I don't use DiskUsage app. Your right about how much is on internal. Mine reads 1.28MB.
any idea what it is storing there?
Drawing a blank on this, I'll keep looking. See if I can come up with something. But I'd probably head on over to theMikMik and see if somebody there can help.
My biggest space hog when I had problems was email... Try clearing data for email or gmail to see what happens (maybe back up first)

i cleared my cache partition, not sure what was stored there but it doesnt matter cleared up 20mb... is there any other ways i can get more space??? why are apps storing data in the dalvik??
Any other suggestions here? My wife's Shift is having this problem. Constant notification about low storage space. Can't even download any new apps. I have not rooted her phone yet, and not sure if I will; I don't want to have her have to go without for any length of time, and I don't think she wants things changed around so much as she just wants the thing to work, not to have to tinker or troubleshoot.

Did you download a lot of apps? Try moving the apps to the SD Card. The path is Menu-Settings-Applications-Manage applications-Downloaded. Then just click on the applications one at a time. If the button says Move to SD card, and isn't greyed out press it. That should free up some space. If that doesn't work since your not rooted, I would just try a factory reset.
clear the folder /data/tombstones. App crashes and such create rather large files that can eat up quite a bit of space. Also check the cache folder at the root, failed market installs will have file fragments in there as well.

Low Memory!!!

I continually run out of space on my blaze's internal memory.I can't sync certain things, like evernote does not have enough space to save notes. I can't do any backups because there is not enough available memory.
I don't think I have an excessive amount of apps, and have put as many on the external sd card as possible. I don't have any games stored on the internal memory, nor any media save a few pictures.
If I look at the applications on the sd card(the internal card) It says I'm using 1.3gb. Just a quick tally and I hardly have more than 70mb in the size of the applications. Am I missing something? Previous phones I have used with less memory have not encountered this. Is there any screenshot or other info that may help?
Any assistance is gratefully appreciated.

Are you on custom ROM/kernel? If so, which ROM/kernel are you using?
some questions
are you using a custom rom? do you have CWM? If you have cwm maybe a backup is on there along with titanium backups... that would eat up a gig.
Best advise is to connect it to your pc and check where all the space is being used.
---------- Post added at 09:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:57 PM ----------
I believe by default the pictures and video files are saved to internal storage so I would check on that too.
I am using the darkknight rom build 3. Sorry for not mentioning that. But I encountered this same issue while running stock. I know the majority of the pics are on the external sd.
I do have cwm and ti on this. THese cannot be setup to use space on the external sd can they?
I would suggest booting to recovery, format /cache and dalvik-cache partitions.
Fix perms, and reboot.
You stated you had low MEMORY so that leads me to believe your device is cluttered with temp and cached files which can be easily removed by doing what I stated above.
Keep in mind ladies and gents, memory is different from storage.
However, the issues you stated above could indicate a low STORAGE issue.
So, if you are having a storage problem, then you need to figure out what is taking up so much space on your device. That can usually be determined by going to settings>storage and looking at the output that is displayed.
For more advice, please let me know that it is a low MEMORY issue or a STORAGE issue.
Try out an app called DiskUsage, it works a lot like WinDirStat for PCs.
That way you can find what's taking up a ton of data
I'm a little confused. I thought i read somewhere the blaze had 4gb of internal memory. Why am i only showing up with 1gb system memory. But also like 2gb usb storage but what is that?
Thanks for any help.

It comes with 4gigs internal and 4gigs external. The internal is used for the OS and system apps. I installed GTA anniversary edition and it took up all my USB storage...then it got deleted.

Sorry for not clarifying, its a storage issue. I should have been a little more exact with my posting...
Incidentally, I cleared up about half a gig by deleting the ti backup folder's contents,
You can change the location of your backups in Titanium by going to preferences-> and scroll down to 'Backup folder location'. Look next to the 'DETECT' button and that will show you the current path. It defaults to 'mnt/sdcard/TitaniumBackup'. Change it to 'mnt/sdcard/external_sd/TitaniumBackup' by pressing the back button and navigating to the right place. The removable storage (sd card) on the Blaze is the sdcard/external_sd path. That way you will still be able to have your backups.
Thanks, there was about half a gig in the ti backup folder, so this should fix my problem.
Is there a way to store apps on the external sd and still get the widgets to work? And also to free up the internal storage?
Thanks
No, sorry, widgets need to be on the internal storage to work properly.
How do i get games like gta and spectral souls to install to my external?? Those games took up all the internal memory. It type suck because theres no space to cache up music from my google music library.

OK so this is my problem...and need help quick BEFOOREE!!
Ok....so I've had the phone for about three months now and i'm beginning to think that this is a problem that I can't resolve on my own..meaning I might have to get a new phone...I'm running the custom ROM and have not rooted the phone.. The problem started when I tried to sedn pictures through my messages. The phone would say..Not enough memory get rid of some stuff.... so i started uninstalling apps that i really don't need. Problem didn't seem to resolve itself, so since everything is backed up to googles ( as far as contacts and apps) I did a system reset to no avail. Seems like I'm having the same problem. Now I have an 8Gb Sd card mounted in system and when I try to move apps into the Sd card it says not enough memory??? Even after system reset. So this is what it says on my storage window... System Storage 0.89GB....USB Storage ( by the way wtf is this??) 1.40 GB and then the SD card with Total space : 7.40 GB Available 7.35GB...I can't seem to move anything into the USB or Sd cards... and yes the Sd card is mounted, or so the system says.... for the sake of not throwing the phone out of the window please help!!
I'm noticing....*whilst* playing around that it seems my phone thinks this USB storage is the SD card. when i check applications and see those in the SD card it shows me those on USB storage...and nothing seems to go to Sd card. I tried downloading apps2 sd and it says same thing...not enough memory...because those few appas I have are taking the whole 2 GB's of space in this invisible usb storage??? Still need help. what the hell is this usb storage and what makes it...looking around i found on the samsung forums that (You must enable USB storage to mount the SD card) i don't remerber doing this and have looked everywhere to turn it off...btw I have the phone replacement thing from T-Mobile..would rooting the phone affect that?.Since it looks to be my only option...I though doing a system reset would fix this but seems not...
in settings-storage, the sd card shows your external sd, usb storage shows the internal space and system shows the system space. this phone has very small system space. my solution was to root the phone and remove the unneeded apps and the "bloat" that tmobil gave us so kindly. you can find guides that show you what can safely be removed, or you can install a custom rom which already has been thinned out. aside from this, clearing the app data in setting-applications can recover some of the space but depending on which app you clear you may need to login to apps like facebook the next time you use that app.
the options in there will have a 'move to sd' button if the app can be moved otherwise it will be greyed out. moving any that can be moved will help.
next will be the stock messaging app that stores its info in system, consider trying out go-sms or handcent as your messaging app and they will store most info on your external sd and help save system space...
Sent from my SGH-T769 using xda app-developers app
Guess ill try rooting it. My problem seems to be that the phone thinks the Usb storage is the sd storage...and then external sd is actual sd. Sucks...cause it seemed to be a decent phone..but your tight..the bloatware is rediculous..any. smooth custom Roms u can reccomend?

ive been using tweaked and from what ive read, dark knight is nice also... since flashing tweaked i havent gotten the memory message at all, but i do move everything that is movable to sd...

My phone's storage used is way too big !

Hi guys,
I don't know why my phone's storage used is way too big (5.73 GB free out of 11.2 GB in total). I've deleted all of the media files (such as mp4 files, and all of the pictures..) but it did not free much space. I've also checked all of the folders to see if there was anything hidden in these folders, but the sizes of these folders are not remarkable. Yet, I only have 5.73 GB left. I don't really know what is the reason for this?
Is this caused by me doing a restore (or backup) without formatting or clearing caches ??? I've done a lot of restores recently (to switch over between ICS and Jelly Bean) but I did not wipe up cache or clear anything? Is this the reason or something else?
Thanks in advance.
Here is a picture of my phone's storage used.
It's probably all the backups you've done. They get pretty big. Don't know what recovery your using but if it's cwm, there are probably over a 1000 blob folders. Although they're small they add up.

[Q] Storage? Storage!

OK, I am having storage/space issues with my Blaze that are making the cameras inoperable (I keep getting a message stating there's a lack of memory or space on the SD card). I am running CM10 Stable on Android 4.1.2 with the CM kernel.
When I go into Settings and look at the Storage, here's what it says (I tried taking Screenshots but they didn't work):
Total Space= 1.12GB
814MB of Apps
252MB Available
Internal Storage= 1.4GB
208MB Apps
553MB Pics/Videos
4.78MB Downloads
SD Card= 3.69MB Total Space
1.99GB Available
Here's the thing: I have NO pics/videos, yet somehow 553 MB are being used for this. So what's the deal? Can someone give me the quickie/noob explanation? Or at least explain what's the best way to control your storage on the Blaze (and yes, I've used Search but haven't really found what I was looking for)? I would really appreciate it, this is a very annoying and frustrating issue.
Thanks!

i think you never cleaned up ur cache and over time lots of crap got accumulated hogging up all your space...also u need to look into your thumbnails as they tend to stay over time even if you move the actual photo...all you need to do is to backup your apps and their data n then boot in recovery mode and do a factory reset and then boot and go to any file manager and move whatever pics and vids you have on internal storage(by change if u have any) to external storage and delete the DCIM folder then...if even that doesnot let you do anything i think you are in need to format your system, cache, data and dalvik and flash the rom u use fresh and start over...you will be good as new then for sure even if it takes lil more time to set up things as u want again but thats better than being frustated and not able to do anything...hope that helps you
Check the ".thumbnails" directory under DCIM (or camera, I forget). My daughter's blaze seems to like accumulating 100+MB files I'm there.
Definitely check app cache too. The Cheeseburger Network app was pulling 500MB of cache on my S2.

I was traveling but I read your recommendations and deleted a ton of files under DCIM folder. That seems to have fixed the issue for now, thanks so much. But I do need to re-flash the ROM anyway due to another issue so that will help.
Thanks! :good:

[Q] I have some simple questions about the storage/emulated folder that need answers

The longer I have my Shield Tablet, the internal storage space seems to slowly vanish more and more. I have been constantly clearing cache, as well as uninstalling more and more apps. The entire internal storage folder (labeled storage/sdcard0), takes up a total of only 3.77 GB according to ES File Explorer, yet I have less than 2 GB free. I have noticed there is a folder labeled: storage/emulated. Within this folder are "0" and "legacy"... Both of these folders appear to be complete clones of the sdcard0 folder (each are exactly 3.77 GB as well). All three of these folders add up to equal the total storage used on the internal storage. So can I really only use a third of the internal storage since everything is duplicated 3 times? Is it safe to delete the contents of either of the 2 folders within storage/emulated? What is the purpose of these folders?
They are all the same directory - they're legacy ways of accessing the storage and are kept for backwards compatibility. Erasing any one of them will erase them all.
If you are on lollipop, the reason for shrinking space is usually the linking of apps to sdcard1 either using android, link2sd, Folder Mount, or the like. The lollipop system apparently reads the storage incorrectly, counting the linked files as still being on the sdcard.

This is exactly right. I am using FolderMount for all of my big games, and my "storage" tab in settings shows that I am using 18GB (when we all know you only get about 12 usable), yet when I look in TitaniumBackup, SDMaid, or the like, it shows that I still have over 9GB free.
I'd use a different method of checking how much storage you're using, because (like the battery stats) the storage stats are totally broken in Lollipop.

My tablet is no longer rooted since I've been on Lollipop so I no longer use Folder Mount. I have moved as many apps as I can to the SD card through the stock app manager. I did use Folder Mount on KitKat, and noticed the weird storage usage, but I did a factory reset after updating to Lollipop. I have installed LOTS of apps, but I reached a point where I wasn't installing any new apps and my storage is slowly disappearing, and now I'm starting to have to uninstall apps... I've had this same issue on every android device I've owned, I eventually have to back up my data and do a factory reset, then reinstall all my apps again, then I suddenly have more free space then before with all the same apps installed...
Is it possible one of the apps you have installed is the culprit? (I.e. filling up your storage?)

Can you run Disk Usage and Storage Analyzer from the play store?
Apps like Google Plus tend to use a lot of cache and data. Have you checked up on them using something like a disk usage analyzer or 1Tap cleaner?

I noticed disk usage app even shows some game data that is not moved but just copied to SD.
Also this helps save me up to half a GB.
Its a hidden folder, in DCIM named thumbnails, it keeps a db on all your pictures an can get big quickly if you have a fair amount of pictures an wallpapers.
I found trick here on XDA, sorry can't remember who to credit but, delete that thumbnail folder an contents an make a new file not folder in the DCIM folder named,
.thumbnails an that is gone for good.

Yes, I used the app DiskUsage and a large chunk of used data is "System data"... It seems to fluctuate is size very much, but overall, it keeps increasing in size...

Also, if i keep installing games and moving to sd, won't it give me a "Not enough disk space" due to those wrong stats?
