[ROM][PORT][WIP] Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview
== NOTE ==
The d2vzw port of Ubuntu Touch is very much a work in progress. Beyond that, it is also a Developer Preview. What this means for you... I'm not quite ready to release an image for starters. Once I do release it, there will likely be a number of things that only partially work, or don't work at all. Regardless, you will be flashing this ROM at your own risk. I am in no way responsible if it eats your cat, burns down your house, bricks your phone, or any other such nonsense.

Why post a thread if the port isn't done yet?
Two reasons... first off, it gives me a more imperative reason to actually finish it. Second, because it helps me determine who's interested, what kind of reception it will get, and (hopefully) find others who are able to help... I'm a bit out of my league here!
== Thanks ==
I have a feeling the list will get longer, but so far... Thanks to Mark and everyone over at Canonical for bringing us Ubuntu Touch in the first place, and thanks to everyone in the #ubuntu-touch channel on Freenode for their help so far... We're making progress!

reserved... just in case

Good luck I hope you finish it.

Simply put, Ubuntu Touch is a Canonical-backed project to bring Ubuntu to mobile devices. They released the developer preview last week with official support for four devices... Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. As usual, the development community has been in overdrive and we already have unofficial builds for a dozen or so other devices. For more info on Ubuntu Touch, feel free to take a look around the official wiki.

I'm very interested in this... I love Ubuntu and use it almost everyday on my PC! Id totally flash this on my phone if its stable / has all the features working that a phone needs... wifi and networking and such.

HOLY ****!
I can honestly say I haven't been this excited for something in a long ass time.
I will gladly test everything out without a problem.
I know how to code in C# and I know a little bit of C++
I also dual boot a few Linux OS's on my computer and have been for the past two years.
If you need any help please ask!

ubuntu! on my phone! yes! finally! ive been watching for a d2vzw port for ubuntu touch....

I'll tell you right now that this won't be a daily driver yet. Even once I get a successful/complete build released, this is still a Developer Preview. It's not really designed for everyday use. That said, hopefully we'll have predominantly all functionality supported fairly quickly, and this is really a stepping stone to a build process for once it's fully stable.

Thanks for the work man. Hope to see this up and running soon!! I've been waiting for some Phonbuntu action for a LONG time!!

Is it not in beta yet? I thought it was officially released. All of the core apps are done being developed; It's just a matter of getting networking working. Once you get it up and running would you mind posting the /device/samsung/d2-common, /device/samsung/d2vzw, and /kernel/samsung/d2 folders to github so I could get it running on the d2att and hopefully help out with getting wi-fi working? theoretically i should be able to get wifi working it's just i need a working base and after dank101 dropped his port there hasn't been anyone working on a release yet. Thanks and good luck! if you need any help let me know i might be able to help out.

Awesome.
I will watching this thread like a hawk.
I have no experience with porting, but if there is anything I can do to help just let me know. I am happy to beta test for you as well.
I look forward to the finished project, and wish you much luck along the way!

Who is willing to work on a kernel?

Alright, I have used almost every Team Acid rom out there and I want to help raver out as much as I can with MIUI and potentially CM7/CM9 so I want to form a team of sorts (more so a coalition) to get working on a kernel while dhundven is busy with life and racer is working on fixing the MIUI bugs.
While I personally have no experience with devving of any kind I'm sure if a bunch of us put our heads together, we can get this done!
So who's in?

I'll give it a shot if i have a spare time.
i know how to theme

I'm very familiar about html.

Feel free to pm and ask a question...
*just don't flame if I get something wrong sometimes, I'm only a HUMAN NOT AN ANDROID :-D
Oh btw.. Hit thanks if I helped
how about sending a request to drhonk?
try posting this in the general section im sure people have had this phone before and changed or something, maybe we can get a dev from another section?

Its not that specific comment, and yeah that was kind of a troll, its the fact that he has commented on my guide that I am working on to help new users saying that its pointless and that I should just tell people to read the wiki and now hes bagging on the work that we haven't even started.
Just because one person or team has failed or had issues doesn't mean we all will

Im better off theme my own phone..
Use the other guys that has unbrickable (just to be sure) to flash your homebrewn kernel before I'll flash it in my device.

Before actual dev recruitment and working, I would ask myself what are we expecting this kernel to have, once we have our goals set we will be able to explore and gather some knowledge in the right direction.
Such goals should be :
1. Much stronger WiFi reception (I know it is possible).
2. Direct line call recording. (was available at Froyo, but blocked by Sami).
3. Kernel without the need of System mounting as RW (like SMS Kj6 Beta 3.1 is).
4. MIUI nightly builds compatible kernel (I have no idea how and what).
5. TV out support (MIUI ususally doesn't support this functionality).
etc.
So who wants to see CWM FB edition?

That's what I'm saying. Looks like an amazing alternative to ics if you want your drivers to be fully functional.
It looks really clean and simple. Also I liked that it isn't heavily themed. Make sure to thank the dev on that because I thunk he / she did a good job.

Yeah there are way to many heavily themed roms out there that are extremely ugly. This looks plain, simple, beautiful, and stock. Which is why it would be amazing to have on this phone.

No ETA, as I said before and was the reason of my questions whether to upload or not, I'm going to be very busy. I have been mostly porting instead of doing my java homework and lecture so I need to catch up, and I have to attend my eldest son father's day thingy which is in another state so I'm trying to get other things done.
Maybe this weekend or next week.

Learn To ROM

I am opening up some of my time to take a couple (1 or 2) of people under my wing, and teach them how to build ROMs (like how someone did with me)..
Last Classes had to Stop before they even got a good Start. Too many people were not committed and were dropping off. Only hit me up if your serious. Please.
Anyone interested in learning how to build ROMs? If so, give me a hollar.
First come, first serve.
You can get in touch with me 24-7 in Google Talk using [email protected] as my email address.
You don't have to have knowledge of anything.
All you need is a working setup of Ubuntu/Mint/Debian in either a VirtualBox/VMware setup or installed to a laptop/computer (dualboot or whatever).
I will not have the time to teach you how to use Linux to do anything else (at this time), so it's best that you have at least enough knowledge of linux to be able to bootup and edit documents, run updates, etc.

I am opening up some of my time to take a couple (1 or 2) of people under my wing, and teach them how to build ROMs (like how someone did with me)..

Although I'm not quite up to speed on using Linux. Its great to see a member doing this. I tried to do some themeing once back on my droid x and that's when I gained a much bigger respect for the developers. Thanks

I would hit you up, but don't have my PC with Ubuntu on it with me right now. Also, don't really have time to learn right now with school. Might be able to use VB on Mac though.

I wish I knew Linux.
Good luck, I hope your generous efforts are not wasted

I am reopening these classes for anyone interested. Everyone else who had attended before have either gotten where they wanted to be, or dropped off. I now have more time and will be accepting 5 new people to mentor/teach basic romming.
This includes basic Ubuntu/Linux Use and Commands as well (becoming familiar and comfortable with Linux).

Same as before:
- Add me to your GTalk and then we can go from there.

I'd love to do this. I started experimenting on my own a bit and ran into some walls.
I'm not sure I have the ability to commit the time right now, though. Maybe I can jump into the mix if you do another class again.

Last Classes had to Stop before they even got a good Start. Too many people were not committed and were dropping off. Only hit me up if your serious. Please.
Classes are now open again.
Any devices are fine, but Samsung is preferred. I am gonna take on about 15 people. FIRST COME FIRST SERVE.
