Learn To ROM - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I am opening up some of my time to take a couple (1 or 2) of people under my wing, and teach them how to build ROMs (like how someone did with me)..
Last Classes had to Stop before they even got a good Start. Too many people were not committed and were dropping off. Only hit me up if your serious. Please.
Anyone interested in learning how to build ROMs? If so, give me a hollar.
First come, first serve.
You can get in touch with me 24-7 in Google Talk using [email protected] as my email address.
You don't have to have knowledge of anything.
All you need is a working setup of Ubuntu/Mint/Debian in either a VirtualBox/VMware setup or installed to a laptop/computer (dualboot or whatever).
I will not have the time to teach you how to use Linux to do anything else (at this time), so it's best that you have at least enough knowledge of linux to be able to bootup and edit documents, run updates, etc.

Thanks for this offer tho. This should be great. Hope your prodigies learn a lot. Maybe someone will open this up to learn how to theme

I am reopening these classes for anyone interested. Everyone else who had attended before have either gotten where they wanted to be, or dropped off. I now have more time and will be accepting 5 new people to mentor/teach basic romming.
This includes basic Ubuntu/Linux Use and Commands as well (becoming familiar and comfortable with Linux).

Who is willing to work on a kernel?

Alright, I have used almost every Team Acid rom out there and I want to help raver out as much as I can with MIUI and potentially CM7/CM9 so I want to form a team of sorts (more so a coalition) to get working on a kernel while dhundven is busy with life and racer is working on fixing the MIUI bugs.
While I personally have no experience with devving of any kind I'm sure if a bunch of us put our heads together, we can get this done!
So who's in?

Its not that specific comment, and yeah that was kind of a troll, its the fact that he has commented on my guide that I am working on to help new users saying that its pointless and that I should just tell people to read the wiki and now hes bagging on the work that we haven't even started.

Before actual dev recruitment and working, I would ask myself what are we expecting this kernel to have, once we have our goals set we will be able to explore and gather some knowledge in the right direction.
Such goals should be :
1. Much stronger WiFi reception (I know it is possible).
2. Direct line call recording. (was available at Froyo, but blocked by Sami).
3. Kernel without the need of System mounting as RW (like SMS Kj6 Beta 3.1 is).
4. MIUI nightly builds compatible kernel (I have no idea how and what).
5. TV out support (MIUI ususally doesn't support this functionality).
etc.
So who wants to see CWM FB edition?

Learning with a dev!

This just came to me today... it's more of a project type idea that would be really awesome if it were done.
I was wondering if any of the major devs in the myTouch 4g forums would like to bring me along in a porting project or something the next time a rom is made.
What I mean is, if a dev comes up with an idea to port a rom, they could let a beginner wanting to learn, like me, tag along with them. Show them what they are doing, let the beginner maybe do a part with the guidance from the dev. Just like a tag along.
It's just a thought because I REALLY want to learn but I'm more of a visual learner. I want to be in the action and be hands-on. If any dev would ever like to take that time to "teach" a beginner, please let me know!
Thanks for reading

Googler (Formerly Can I Google That For You?)

Formerly Can I Google That For You?, this update adds so much more! I have included several new features, both useful, and fun. Many people aren't aware of Google's sense of humor, so I've added some examples here. Want to search like a pirate? Done. Klingon, ok sure. Need a handy calculator, or perhaps a translator? You got it. Need something to kill time? How about some Pac Man? And of course, Let Me Google That For You remains.
Note: On my device (Galaxy Nexus), in order to get the LMGTFY link to copy this is what I had to do:
Tap the generated link so it highlights, then press and hold, and while holding slide your finger to the left or right.
The software I use bases the web activity off of the stock aosp browser. I know many devices have chrome as default, but that is not the same thing. This is why that bug exists. I'm working on it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andromo.dev80417.app176212 - may not be live yet, just uploaded the update. Should be up soon.

Re: Can I Google That For You?
I'm ok with someone not liking the app. I don't like every app. But app reviews, and I say this for all apps not just my own, should be more about how well they work, or how well they do what they are intended to do. A lot of reviews I have read of my apps and of others are obviously posted by someone that didn't read. I have a review on an app that said it was not a good game. Well, it isn't a game, so that makes sense. If you have criticism of an app and post that on this forum, at least give some feedback. Otherwise others may get the impression that it doesn't work just because you "don't like it". The same goes with rom development. Don't just post that a rom sucks. That isn't helpful. If you don't like what I do, I'm ok with that. But please don't post something that may misrepresent my work and cause others to no try it. I would do the same for you.
Btw, I own guns, and legally carry, and I have never killed anyone. Nor have any of the growing number of people in my church or the churches nearby that have permit classes regularly. For what that's worth, though this isn't really the place for that.

You are correct. What version of android are you on? I'm using a rooted dinc2 with jb. The reason I ask, I tried the website from my browser and had the same issue. Anyone else having this issue? If so try it from your browser and see what happens? All my app does is open that page. It may be a bug either with the page or possible android not recognizing it as something that can be copied. I can copy from the search bar, just not the link.

Nope, read it, it's cool where he's coming from, but I couldn't care less. If superuser was such a security risk, I doubt cyanogen would still be using it, and about every single rom out there uses supersu (also get regular updates), so I'm sure if there was a security flaw, it'd be known by now, and he updates regularly enough I'm sure it'd get patched if it was, just like koush's.
I like Supersu, it gets regular updates, chainfire seems intelligent from reading some of his forum posts, and tons of roms are using it without security breaches due to it. Not everything closed source is bad, some people just put a lot of work into their app and don't want to just give it away (unless that was the intention, ex linux). Could it probably be made better with open source? Sure, but giving up your source also brings kangers (think anthrax kernel). I love open source, I love seeing others code to see how they went about something, it's an art and there will always be someone smarter than you to learn from, but I also can appreciate people's decision to keep their programs closed source after spending so many hours on computer science labs to make a simple command line shopping cart and it annoys me when people classify someones work insecure solely because they don't give the source code. Plus some people do this as their living and make money off it, how much money do you think someone will make if they give away their code? Sure there will be donators, but most likely someone will build the program and distribute it for free.
Everyone's opinion is different, I tried to state mine in a brief way that didn't attack anyone earlier but you decided to call me out and go all "bro" on me so now you know where I'm coming from.

Yes, as in it's not going to persuade me to go download the app.

I think he was just pointing out your mistake that way too many people make. "Couldn't" care less is what you should have said.

Ah didn't catch that, I corrected it, thanks.
having more options is great. although superSU is incorporated in more leak packages and roms already.
cwm should have made this along time ago.

My bad, I thought he was just pointing out where my error was, so when I saw you quote it, I thought you were doing the same except adding in the correction... didn't occur to me he was trying to correct it and failed, so I apologize.
And zero sh!ts were given this day...

I agree totally,
I use this app for two reasons. It's open source and is made by one of the best developers ever! He also developed thus other little thing called CWM!

I highly doubt that this is the place for immature ppl to be arguing with each other. This is a forum ppl get your head out of your asses and delete this nonsense its unnecessary. Xda created this to help ppl out and you guys are clearly disrespecting them. I read a post earlier in this thread about ppl posting the sane questions over and over again and disrespecting rom makers now I see what he's talking about. Everybody needs to grow up this isn't the place for this..write a private message

[ROM][PORT][WIP] Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview

Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview
== NOTE ==
The d2vzw port of Ubuntu Touch is very much a work in progress. Beyond that, it is also a Developer Preview. What this means for you... I'm not quite ready to release an image for starters. Once I do release it, there will likely be a number of things that only partially work, or don't work at all. Regardless, you will be flashing this ROM at your own risk. I am in no way responsible if it eats your cat, burns down your house, bricks your phone, or any other such nonsense.

Why post a thread if the port isn't done yet?
Two reasons... first off, it gives me a more imperative reason to actually finish it. Second, because it helps me determine who's interested, what kind of reception it will get, and (hopefully) find others who are able to help... I'm a bit out of my league here!
== Thanks ==
I have a feeling the list will get longer, but so far... Thanks to Mark and everyone over at Canonical for bringing us Ubuntu Touch in the first place, and thanks to everyone in the #ubuntu-touch channel on Freenode for their help so far... We're making progress!
reserved... just in case
Good luck I hope you finish it.

Simply put, Ubuntu Touch is a Canonical-backed project to bring Ubuntu to mobile devices. They released the developer preview last week with official support for four devices... Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. As usual, the development community has been in overdrive and we already have unofficial builds for a dozen or so other devices. For more info on Ubuntu Touch, feel free to take a look around the official wiki.
I'm very interested in this... I love Ubuntu and use it almost everyday on my PC! Id totally flash this on my phone if its stable / has all the features working that a phone needs... wifi and networking and such.
HOLY ****!
I can honestly say I haven't been this excited for something in a long ass time.
I will gladly test everything out without a problem.
I know how to code in C# and I know a little bit of C++
I also dual boot a few Linux OS's on my computer and have been for the past two years.
If you need any help please ask!
ubuntu! on my phone! yes! finally! ive been watching for a d2vzw port for ubuntu touch....

I'll tell you right now that this won't be a daily driver yet. Even once I get a successful/complete build released, this is still a Developer Preview. It's not really designed for everyday use. That said, hopefully we'll have predominantly all functionality supported fairly quickly, and this is really a stepping stone to a build process for once it's fully stable.

exactly! Even if it's gonna by awhile for daily use, it's a start and a stepping stone like you said!
Will definitely be watching and willing to test! Good luck!

Thanks for the work man. Hope to see this up and running soon!! I've been waiting for some Phonbuntu action for a LONG time!!
Is it not in beta yet? I thought it was officially released. All of the core apps are done being developed; It's just a matter of getting networking working. Once you get it up and running would you mind posting the /device/samsung/d2-common, /device/samsung/d2vzw, and /kernel/samsung/d2 folders to github so I could get it running on the d2att and hopefully help out with getting wi-fi working? theoretically i should be able to get wifi working it's just i need a working base and after dank101 dropped his port there hasn't been anyone working on a release yet. Thanks and good luck! if you need any help let me know i might be able to help out.
Awesome.
I will watching this thread like a hawk.
I have no experience with porting, but if there is anything I can do to help just let me know. I am happy to beta test for you as well.
I look forward to the finished project, and wish you much luck along the way!
