i want to know if there is a app that i could install on there phone that will let me track them with GPS?? that will tell me there location on my incredible.
does a app like this excest?
What about google location with google latitude that allows you to share your current location?
i will try that. thanks.
Careful relying on Latitude though, it's easy to turn off. Hope he/she doesn't get too smart!
realy? its easy to turn off. is there a app more secret? a app that hides in back ground.?
look at Washdroid.

Does no one else think this is wrong?
As a father myself I can honestly say that this is pretty messed up.
If you don't trust your kid don't let them out the house.
Don't for 1 second think that your "protecting" them. Because your not.
Please excuse me for preaching. I'm not telling you how to raise your kids and don't mean to cause any offence. Its just a subject I feel strongly about.
As a father myself, I don't see how this is wrong.
1.) It's for a teen. Of course you don't trust them. It's the nature of the beast. I was a pretty good kid for the most part, but hell, even I didn't trust myself.
2.) I don't really see it so much as protecting them, but it definitely helps to keep them accountable. And if, "god" forbid, they should go missing, at least you'd have somewhere to start looking. Just because your kid is "trustworthy", doesn't mean the bad guys out there are going to take that into consideration.
If the kid knew about it I don't see a problem (regardless of weather they agree or not). Its the whole hiding it I have a problem with.
Why stop there? You could record all sound heard by the phone aswell.
Good point about them being aware of it. I think the recording audio option would be too invasive.
Sent from my MB300 using XDA App
Keeping tabs on the kid aside, I'd do it just for tracking a $500 piece of hardware. Other kids at school would probably love to have a Droid to play with. As one who had my locker routinely broken in to when I was in high school, I'd defiantly use it on my daughter's device!
well personally i think youve gotta let your kid out from underneath a rock at some point. if he/she is old enough to have a 500 dollar smartphone i would think he wouldnt need tabs kept on him/her.
unless this kids an idiot thats made alot of mistakes id say your just as dumb for buying him/her the phone in the first place.
but im not a parent and im only 18 so what do i know.
If your kid found out about it they would have a hard time trusting you with anything afterwards and it would distance you as a parent. Back in the days without cell phones with gps tracking, i bet you were allowed out of the house without a trace being put on you. This is your kid we are talking about , not a prisoner, trust them a bit and give them some freedom because sooner than later htey will be moving out and you will wish your relationship was closer.

I totally agree.
GPS Tracking is for me a really bad thing, I would hate my parents if they had done that to me !
Even if I have some idea of applications, I won't help you because it's really (for me) a bad idea to do that ^^
There are apps that let you track other phones but I think both phones have to have the app or am I wrong?
I would get your teen the original droid because it has a keyboard (for texting) and I bet the price will drop because of the Droid X. Also the Droid X has a 4.3 in touchscreen, a bad drop means a completely shattered screen.
Morals aside, https://www.wavesecure.com/ is a good app for this, among other things. And yes, it hides itself on the phone pretty well, and is protected with a PIN.
Regarding the ethics, I don't think its right to do without your child's consent. But if you explain it is a security measure I'm sure they'd agree to it if the other option was a £10 crappy Nokia.
As for the issue at hand,... I second wavesecure, its bang on all you need in terms of security....

I totally agree with the above.
Google is way to powerful not to fight it.
Yep this whole concept is too big to lie down that easily.
Compartmentalized
Android won't really be affected here. If anything, Google will take the hit and move on like nothing happened. With the significant portion of the phone OS market share, they've got nothing to lose at the moment. Really, the only thing that will kill Android is how the phone/tablet market progresses in the next 3-4 years.
I agree. If google loses the case they will pony up the money and move on. Android is way too big to fail at this point in time.

i agree with twitch google is just too powerful
Maybe google is 'too' powerful, they are awesome and i don't see it happen in the near future but still, what if '(don't) do evil'
It'll settle out of court most likely.
Google is King... Im pretty sure it will be alright!
Its not about google "taking a hit" and moving on. If google loses they will not only have to pay damages but they will also have to rewrite the android os which will add x amount in addition they will lose ground since during the redevelopment process google will not be able to sell any tablets or phones.
Research oracle and litigation when they file they win. Google may be big but oracle is bigger and when a company is wrong they are wrong.

Go google go !
Any1 got info on what exactly is the IP issue at hand ?
Do you think anyone can develope a program to prevent google from capturing this information about their users? Maybe at least on a android based platform even. This really chaps my a$$
Code:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/google-tracks-consumers-across-products-users-cant-opt-out/2012/01/24/gIQArgJHOQ_story.html?wpisrc=al_comboNE_b
Whats the big deal? Google cuts down on paperwork and the policies haven't changed, they are just merged/ It eliminated redundancies and wasted effort.
what difference does it make if you are giving your personal information to Gmail or to youtube? If google has it, Google has it, period. It is still a Google based service, combining the private policies of all of the services into one makes perfect sense.
Google has stated they still have no plans to change how they handle the data.
The big deal is I NEVER CLICK YES for gooble to collect anything on me, which means I "opt-out" now I have a contract on a phone I dont want to touch. great, a 700$ paperweight , not including the service. screw you google.
I will not tap "yes" for google
Are you sure that they are 700 $?
Rage! An ad/marketing company makes my OS and wants to show me ads relevant to me rather than random ads. A company wants to make money off of a product they've created and are heavily vested in? Who'd have thunk it?
Don't like it? There's other choices out there. WP7 is pretty hot ;-)

Wait til wp7 phones get ads lol
Have to say though to op its not like google are pushing ads to your device. If you browse net you get same problem. I think they have messed up somewhere cos on my laptop I always get ads for things I already have. But I don't get ads on my phone unless on a webpage or using an ad funded app so no different to a pc or any internet device.

Hence the lol
But the point is google aren't sending ads any different than on a pc. Whatever phone pc or tablet people use makes no difference, google and others can and do still collect data when you browse.
And some collect other data even when you opt out such as wp7 collecting user data that caused them to get sued last year. Its impossible to have a smartphone and not have someone collect data of some sort.

What would be the best way to avoid this?
a problem I could see is if like, I have my son over on a weekend and he jumps on...idk, nickelodeon. com or something, will it show ads for all the porn sites I visit?
I sure as hell wouldn't want him reporting that to his mother and even possibly the appropriate authorities...
just curious but in what way is this different, if not dramatically worse, than everything CarrierIQ was accused of a few months back.
I wonder if this will affect things like StartPage which bills itself as being completely private but is "enhanced by Google"
This is why I have dead email addresses. I've got one for Gmail just for my phone. Never use it for anything else. Just the phone.
Don't Be Evil, just make lots and lots of money.
The real problem is the internet. There are always the spammers that get a kick out of just breaking someone else's things, and that's why almost all websites log things. It also creates privacy concerns for those trying to follow the rules. So if it bothers you so much that Google knows you search for a laptop, and it suggests that there is a better, cheaper one, next time you use gmail, then you have problems. I personally love this, now when I go between Google services, I don't have to log in again. Google provides you with great services for free, why not give them the ability to advertise to you? The world is dangerous, get over it.
Or you could do the most practical thing, ad block. Its on Firefox and chrome, so that should cover almost everybody. If your stuck with ie, well, god help you.

You agreed to their terms of service. As has been pointed out, the information is used so they can show ads that pertain to you specifically. I view this as a good thing.
If you don't want a company to know your browsing and purchasing habits, you should buy a cabin in the woods and live off the grid, no electronics, no grocery stores, completely self sufficient.
Good luck!
Android, and every other touchscreen OS, (besides iOS) you might as well say goodbye to...
Apple now has the power to destroy Android, Windows Phone, and any other iOS Touchscreen Competitor... Steve Jobs wins this round (for now anyways...)
How long before Apple has the S3 Pulled? This is the top iPhone competitor besides the DROID RAZR Series, with the S3 far ahead...

This could spell the end for Android and this phone, and I will not be a happy camper if I can't upgrade because of Apple... I will throw a major tantrum!
Google, act & appeal fast and fix this mess!!!!
Comments, Thoughts, Last Wishes?
I am not saying this will happen, but is quite possible if the government doesn't block Apple in their tracks from doing so... (I think once Google Appeals, these parents will be made standard for touchscreens...)

If this ever happens i would rather go back to a flip phone or have none at all. I would never give apple any of my money.
I refuse to get an Apple device, but this won't effect available devices in stock or on eBay, so good Android devices will be very rare if this goes the way Apple wants... I'll tell you one thing, eBay prices for Android Devices will go sky high.... (used or not...)
Edit: I miss flip phones anyways, so I'll go old school if I have to...
i have an ipad, and this makes me want to smash it. Apple, you do not own the world, you were not the first to create a "list" on an electronic device. If your so afraid of Samsung, then just build a darn phone with a bigger screen, i wont buy it, but tons of other people would. Fair competition is good for business, it keeps ingenuity alive and keeps engineers pushing the limits of what can be done. Competition is THE ONLY REASON we have the superphones we have now. If apple owns all the rights to make anything that even resembles a smartphone, we will have the iphone 4s renamed and sold as a new product for the next decade.
Whoever the judge is that granted that patent, is an idiot.
it will never happen. Nothing to add.
Well some of what this says they currently have rights to like list view is bs because before the first iPhone was released I was able to use list view on Windows mobile for years. So unless I've miss read, something isn't right or maybe my aging memory is wrong.

Android is here to stay. Google and samsung have some pretty good lawyers too. It's total BS that this kinda stuff even goes on. The only people getting rich on this are the lawyers. If they were smart, they'd sit across from each other at a conference table and make a truce and move on.
Now that Jobs is dead, it's just a matter of time before Apple slips into irrelevance. Nobody there has the passion he had about his company, and nobody is gonna defend it like he did.
That 40 billion they have will be squandered away on bogus patent law suits. Money that could have been spent on more cutting edge development. Everybody knows that patents are crap. Your better off not even applying for a patent and get the thing to market first. By the time they figure out what you did, you come up with something new. A patent application is an invitation and a headstart for everybody else to steal your idea. The company thats ahead of the development curve, and gets it to market fast and furious, makes the money.
Boo hoo...they stole my idea:crying:
Apple is a joke. This is what happens when they feel threaten by a competitor. I will give it to Apple the iPhone was a brake through, but since then Android came out and is user friendly with developers willing to make the devices better and faster more customizable. Making the Android OS just better period. Apple needs to realize there are other players in this game so step up as Android HAS. They know Android IS the future and their scared they will be left behind. Lol I laugh a Apple, I'm going to tell them like I do any young kid with a bad attitude grow up.

I'm hoping this is to make an example, not to actually get this stuff banned, cause we should be honouring the people who pioneered this whole thing. It's the perfect counterclaim though, it could get the whole thing thrown out of court, which would be nice.
