I’m using ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0 (on an LG Optimus T). I’m experimenting with different ICS ROMs. From reading various posts on this wonderful forum, I’m fairly sure one should always wipe the cache and Dalvik Cache when moving to a newer release of a ROM or to a completely different ROM. Is that correct? And, if one is going to a completely different ROM altogether (even if the old and new are both ICS) then one should also wipe data/factory reset?
Does that make sense? If so, is the reason one doesn’t wipe data/factory reset when going to a newer release of the current ROM because then that data is carried over to the new ROM and it saves time in terms of reconfiguring settings...?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Dave
a wipe is always suggested when installing newer version of rom or totally different flavor to avoid data errors or mismatches in settings depending on the degree of change from previous release. i guess most have been able to manage to retain same data and not do a total wipe out to factory because of customizations which is very annoying to do all over again.
if you want to experience the full potential of a certain rom, i suggest to do a full wipe.
note: i have been able to switch from CM7 to CM9 and back with only dalvick, cache, and battery stats wipes. although, i get to reinstall a few apps like Titanium due to FCs.
New release of same rom : Wipe cache and dalvik cache. (If any errors arise with the apps later you should do a full wipe)
Different rom : Wipe data/factory reset, cache, dalvik cache. Sometimes it is recommended to wipe /system too.
Thanks for the responses. Sincerely appreciated. So, if I'm trying a different ROM, I need to do the factory reset, cache and Dalvik Cache wipes - and if just going to a newer version of a ROM, I can skip the factory reset - and go back and do the factory reset if problems arise with any apps. If I do experience issues with my apps, does that mean I just have to do a factory reset - or do I need to reinstall the ROM first and then do the factory reset...?
I presume the benefit of not doing the factory reset is that there is then no need to reinstall apps, fix settings...
When you say "Sometimes it is recommended to wipe /system too", which option is that in CWM or do I have to do that from my PC...?
Thanks in advance for any clarification.
Dave
If you get FCs with some apps while going to a new version of the ROM(without a /data wipe), try clearing the data of that app alone. That might help.
To wipe system, you can use the zip attached. It was provided with some ROM when there was an error in formatting /system automatically before the new rom installation. Just flash it like any other zip and it will format your /system.
You can use Titanium Backup to backup/restore your applications. Just be carefull with system apps, restoring data from different roms can cause fc.

Are you sure it works with clockworkmod recovery???
show_progress 0.1 0
format SYSTEM:
show_progress 0.2 0
show_progress 0.2 10
This script has two problems in my opinion:
1.AFAIK this type of script format(amend) is not supported by cwm now.
2.When editing with n++ it shows CR LF at end of each line......
and "carriage return" line code is used in windows while unix uses LF (line feed) for it's text.....so there should be LF only.....i think
Please correct me if I am wrong as i am just trying to learn here.....:fingers-crossed:

Sorry, I'm not the developer of that zip, I just got it long back from some other thread. Couldn't locate that thread, so just attached it again.
Anyway, it works fine with my ThunderG recovery, which has not given me any problems till date.

This right here.
This changes everything! All in all should cut 30 mins. off of ROM Flashing!
What if you could cut that time by a solid 20 or 30 minutes? Thanks to a new feature just incorporated in Titanium Backup, you can. With the newest update to TB Pro, you can now create a flashable zip of all your apps and data. That means that you can flash all your goodies right after a new ROM and fire up a system that's ready to go right out of the box.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/11/06/new-in-titanium-backup-create-flashable-zips-of-all-your-apps-and-data/
It'll be interesting how the "data" part works out on new or re-based ROMS though.
I saw this today and got super excited. Hope it works good and is bug free.
Cool! I remember when CWM was supposed to add a feature to create a zip of the Rom you were running but that never came out.

Just tried it, it makes the update.zip file in the root of the SD0 card, even if you have backups to save to SD1 (external SD card)

tried the update.zip as the last file to flash after updating on a complete wipe to the latest CM nightly (11/07/2012), flashed GAPPS, then tried to flash update.zip. It "looked" it was flashing, went through about 5 of the 54 applications and then rebooted into CM with none of the applications installed.
Only saving grace was I had the foresight to to a TI backup before I tried the update.zip
I was able to restore all 54 applications from there after downloading TI Backup from the market.
Long and short, it doesn't work yet. Good concept, doesn't work.

This has worked on every version of cwm that I've used (I'm on 6.0.1.2). If you've already made a backup, then flash a new rom:
-go back into recovery
-select backup/restore
-goto advanced restore
-select the rom to get your backup from
-select restore data
-reboot
@sanjsrik
Yeah, not working for me as well. Maybe I'm missing a step here or not doing it in the correct order.
1. Boot to Recovery
2. Wipe/Factory reset
3. Wipe cache
4. Wipe dalvik
5. Install ROM (in this test case, CM10)
6. Install .zip file (created by TI Backup)
7. Boot
8. Nothing restored (it's like a bone stock install of CM10)

I flashed rom, gapps n then i hit that install update.zip button after I let the rom boot up n settle. It wouldn't get past the boot animation. I wiped, flashed rom, flashed gapps, let the rom boot up n settle. Then I went back into recovery. I installed the zip as I would a regular zip n I fixed permissions. Then it worked

Make a nandroid before using
this is for Software Version 77.8.10.XT897.Sprint.en.US
you can check your version Settings > About Phone > SW version
Nothing has been stripped out or changed, this is completely stock.
To be clear it is NOT a full ROM and will replace your
/system/app
/system/framework
folders completely.
If you have added anything to these directories it will be removed.
I added Superuser to system/app is the only modification.
Again make a nandroid before flashing

That's great I appreciate the work! However, after reflashing stock boot and recovery (I have two Nandroids already, one with aarrrrggghs kernel and one with shabby's kernel) and installing the update, I can't seem to get the darn system to boot after flashing the updated deodexed system. I have yet a few more things to try, so I will post an update as well. As far as testing all of this along with your mod zips, I am a willing volunteer! Send me whatever you come up with, I'll run the bugger without fear!

Perhaps I should've been more specific:
fastboot flash boot boot.img (taken from shabby's stock files)
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
voodoo ota rootkeeper protect then unroot
download update
installed
reflashed TWRP and made another Nandroid of updated stock system
...now here's where I get confused on the wipe before install...
do I just wipe cache/dalvik? or those two with factory reset? or a full system wipe?
that last one doesn't make much sense, but in science you analyze all steps, eliminating them, and whatever is left, however improbable, must be the way yadda yadda.
thanx again

Wipe Dalvik should be onlything you have todo when flashing unless someones mods say todo otherwise. also heads up i think Shabbys kernel is just stock no changes to it except he added P's and Q's for the description
Huh...because once I flashed shabby's p & q wifi was completely blacked out...interesting tho. And I did figure it out and am fully DeOdexed with the power boot menu...just used the XDA assistant widget to replace (loosely) the toggles, and I have several widgets that display battery %. I am patient.

Did you flash shabby's kernel on the update? Because both shabby's and arrrghhh's kernels work with the original software version (77.6.36.XT897.Sprint.en.US) only. Modules have been changed in the update and wifi breaks every time.
Yeah..that's where I goofed. Using kernel builds for a completely different software file system/build. I didn't realize at the time that they are software specific.

Whenever I attempt to wipe dalvik cache, I always get this error:
E:unknown volume for path [sd-ext]
If you have apps2sd enabled in your rom the /sd-ext partition holds a separate dalvik cache from internal memory. Because of the way the sd card is mounted, there's no method of mounting an ext partition at this time but TWRP still looks for it when wiping dalvik cache. Its just the way the recovery's wired, but everything's fine.
Thanks ranger by I have been annoyed for the last 3 weeks about the update by moto

Dalvik & cache wipe was all I did, worked like a charm. Also I wanted to point out that the updated power boot menu works flawlessly.
AND I was able to mod my 3G/4G status bar icons using ROM Toolbox Pro. However for some reason that's the only ones it will do, all the other icons it will either run & tell me to reboot then no changes or run the innstall operation for literally over 20 minutes and I have to force-kill the app. I have emailed the dev team about that including a spec report on our phone. Have yet to hear anything back when I do will update again.
P.S. I changed the 3/4G icons to the Droid 4 style where it shows LTE next to the 4G.

The Jelly Bean custom rom is absolutely amazing. I have been using it for almost a week now and the UI is as smooth as silk. I am loving it as well.
As far as your fears are concerned the best way to ensure that you can revert back to the stock rom is by taking a full backup in CWM recovery module prior to flashing the custom rom. This way you can restore your stock rom along with installed applications and settings at any time from CWM. Just make sure that you do not format your SD Card during the flashing phase as CWM creates a backup of 1-2 GBs of your stock rom on the SD Card. I would suggest copying it to your computer for safety.

I have been doing a lot of research on this issue over the internet, but have not found any workable solution. However there was one option for which I would like to know from the developers here if this is possible. It was suggested on one of the websites that if accelerometer or any other sensor on the Android Device is not working after installing a custom rom then replacing the system file of that sensor in the root using the file of the stock rom can make it work.
What do you guys say.

I want to upgrade to JB custom ROM on TF101. I have seen a quite few. But I want to know which one is the best. Also please let me know do we need to download all the apps after upgrading the ROM. Is there a way to keep the apps intact after upgrading or reinstalling by taking back up. Downloading again will take a lot of data and a lot of time. Please help.
You can back up your apps with titanium backup onto an SD card or other external storage, but you must wipe the tablet when upgrading to JB, I recommend team eos nightlies with KAT kernel, they work very nicely.
You can also get the apk files from /system/app I think or /data/app and reinstall after putting those back on the tablet after wiping.
Shall you please let me know what is the purpose of KAT kernel

I'm running Revolver 4.2.1. What are the advantages going to JB from ICS? I'm going on a long trip soon, so I'm mainly looking for stability, battery performance and keyboard/dock compatibility.
Also, I'm reading that we need to install TWRP to run JB ROMs? Or can I still use CWM?
Thanks in advance!

Lots of speed improvements over the stock kernel, fixes for different things like audio and gps
Grab the Kat-App too, that also boosts Audio and GPS

Yes move to TWRP as soon as possible or risk bricking your TF as many have done trying to flash new ROMs with CWM
If you install Goo Manager you can easily install TWRP from the top right settings menu "Install OpenRecoveryScript"
Highly recommend TeamEOS4 and KatKernel in terms of everything you are looking for for your trip
Advantages over ICS are performance and stability and a new UI (Which is swappable with the ICS tablet version from settings in TeamEOS)
OK. I looked at some tutorials to get a sense of TWRP and Goo Manager. I know you can view and download ROMs from GM. So after downloading the ROM, boot into TWRP to install it? How about flashing kernels and the Kat app you referred to? Is that downloaded and installed in the same procedure?

Yep exactly the same as a ROM, I do it this way
For a ROM
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache and System
Install ROM
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
---
For a Kernel
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
Install Kernel
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
---
For Gapps
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
Install Gapps
Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
----
Basically Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache between each flash and when your done, then reboot
For Kat App, its just an app, so wait until you're done with the above, boot into the ROM, get everything set up how you like it, then install the Kat App, its just an APK so you just use a file manager (ES File Explorer is my choice) and click it once to install it
Once in there, goto the Install section and install the GPS and Audio etc, the rest is pretty self explanatory, sections for Audio etc
EDIT - You don't have to use Goo Manager to download the ROMs or others either, sometimes its faster to use the PC and copy them over to the TF then reboot to recovery to flash them, you can use internal or external sdcards in TWRP, I have the links in my sig
EOS 4
I'll second the Team EOS 4 Recommendation
+1 for EOS4
