Petition - Galaxy S 4 General

Hi guys,
i just wanted to know if there's a way to send a petition with a lot of signatures to samsung , against knox and warranty checker.

I see what you're trying to do but Samsung won't care
if Samsung cared about users then we wouldn't have those things in the first place(or at least they would have been implemented differently)
Sent from my GT-I9500 using Tapatalk

hate this kind of thing , i will just move to sell this device..android is open. They are making it close.. i will just buy a nexus device next time

and it gets worst with the region lock on unlocked devices
i mean why the F*** sell unlocked devices if they're still locked, samsung is little by little taking away user freedom
so im going Sony next year, i would now but money is short
Sent from my GT-I9500 using Tapatalk

i will just get a nexus device.. nothing else.

there is an ongoing petition against knox in the general forum ;you can join the effort and feel free to create another one i m sure to support your quest

Nexus is also a locked down device IMO, no removable battery, no extSD card, poor camera.
I'm also going to jump ship to Sony.

Seriously?
Samsung will wipe their ass with our petitions....

Correct me if I'm wrong but you guys jumping ship to sony, aren't sony devices bootloader locked as well? And unlocking it leaves a permanent mark which cannot be reverted. Therefore, voiding your warranty

Probably but it s more about creating brand awareness .Also pragmatically speaking a company which is snob vis a vis its consumers will fail . Reality check Blackberry , you can visit the crackberry forum to see the level of unhappiness consumers had to understand why this company which had only deaf ears to its consumers is going bankrupt .

Knox is a great idea for everyone outside XDA. It supports BYOD so people can use a single device for their personal stuff while giving corporate IT the security they require for their stuff that co-exists on an employees phone. So employees don't have to carry around two separate phones and are always connected via a single voice and data connection for their business and personal communication. For non-business users, because Knox lives at the bootloader level, it prevents the wiping of a lost or stolen phone. I connect to multiple secure networks and haven't been able to root my phones for over a year so for me and those like me Knox is no big deal and most likely a benefit. I'll miss rooting to do stuff and then unrooting and still being able to keep "official" status but it is what it is.
Knox has been so well received in the B2B market LG is introducing something similar - LG Gate
http://www.goodgearguide.com.au/article/528187/smartphone_vendors_target_byod_enterprises/
There are tens of millions of devices that can be sold B2B and about 5M "enthusiasts" on XDA who Samsung by their behavior think are expendable. Knox is here to stay so those impacted by it should send Samsung a message and not buy their devices. A petition won't change a thing.

It would be nice if it were something you could opt into during checkout or during your purchase of the device. I see the benefits to people who aren't about roms and rooting but it seriously inconveniences those of us who are

I posted the "happy" stuff. There's a definite f-u message to the dev community in that Samsung moved the warranty flag to Knox where it's now tamper resistant. They didn't need to do that for anything security related. So Knox or not Samsung's not exactly embracing "enthusiasts."
I'm glad people are starting a petition. It's a petition that got our bootloaders unlocked for our asus prime? Or tf700...cant remember cuz I have both but the fact is the community got it unlocked.

This is true and when I unlocked my bootloader it said my warranty was voided but when I had an issue with the internal battery they replaced even though the warranty was voided. I guess it depends on the problem in which the warranty is voided.
Hopefully Samsung can be more specific with what's voided and what's not.

I remember the argument people had with the warranty too. I'm glad that they fixed the battery because it was hardware related and not software which is why this voided warranty for unlocked devices is ridiculous.

The real alternative here is an AOSP or Developer edition Note. Samsung is trying to entrench in Enterprise, Knox is their lever. They won't be removing it.

This... The enthusiast community is a very very small segment of the population and Knox is a feature that is sold to the community at large, especially buisnesses wary of android's reputation for malware and security problems (wether true or not, it's what's out there). Get used to this, because eventually all phones will be locked down like this. Companies may lose the enthusiast segment but they gain the far larger and more profitable business market. If anyone thinks that's not an easy choice, you're kidding yourself.
LOL, I thought someone is publishing the digital signatures for a Knox bit free boot loader....

The problem is not that Knox is bad or not , the problem is that consumers don't have a choice. The sad truth is this is happening everywhere from food to computers. I agree that we should do something but I personally think it's already too late.

I doubt that very much.
They'll take one look at it and bounce it back as null and void.
I am planning to buy Note 3, I already have S4 with older rom and bootloader (canadian variant).
So I understand (somewhat) this Knox system.
If I do get Note 3, I can't install custom recovery and flash custom roms?
What would flag the Knox system, the warranty becoming void, is it installing custom recovery, or rom? What about the rooting, does that affect knox as well?

Well I don’t agree that we cannot make a change. If you read a book like The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference , you will come to see that even though Samsung spend around 4 billion $ for marketing , the final say is in the hand of the consumers . Currently if you look around the s4 forum, the note 3 forum, and other forums around of the web you will see that people are unsatisfied with what Samsung is doing, and they are advising people away from Samsung.
For one, I know that I can directly influence 50 of my friends and I made sure to contact each and every one of them about Samsung new policies and advised them against any future purchase of a Samsung device. I also contacted some blogs explaining the issues that we have with Samsung - I have yet to hear a word from them - so even though Samsung can pay its way around the web to silence some critiques , it cannot affect the social binding , and the negative social vibe generated around its products . So let’s wait and see if Samsung will stay arrogant and fall like blackberry, nokia , palm … and any other too big for consumer company did , or whether they are going to start making some changes .

I buy a samsung galaxy from the first that came out! always done with what I please! ROM metia you were pre-beta just to try!
with this, we put a barrier samsung and limits us to do what they want!
where it stayed that have Android to be free?
you say you buy a Nexus if I do not go through what we are subjected samsung .. do not you think you're thinking the wrong way? you are undergoing something you limited without any claim?
rings at David vs. Goliath, but at least you will know that there are a handful of unhappy with this new security policy, which on one hand is very good, but on the other, baaaaaaad!
we know that many end users do not even know it's a ROM, let alone answer if you have rooteado or not .. but we are the damned geeks what we like tinkering with what we buy ..
that's the point. perhaps not even make this request out of the desk, but at least we did not stay silent.
For one, the English version of the petition is rather unreadable due to poor punctuation and grammatical errors.
But the real problem is that KNOX itself isn't the problem but how Samsung has decided to inform the companies that handle the warranty repairs. Their line is simply "if there are any 0x1 flags then no warranty". The KNOX flag itself should only mean one thing: that the device was tampered with and its security compromised (important information for corporate IT departments) but it should have no bearing to hardware repairs as these are two separate things.
Done

I think this "petition" threads should be closed and deleted on XDA ... it obviously never changed anything. I signed so many and it never helped (last one was "HTC One X S-Off petition"). I dont think Samsung nor HTC gives a **** about flasher and custom ROM users like us. They need us just for beta testing when they throw us some "leaks" (like a bone to a dog).

Why is Samsung acting like Apple?

Android is supposed to be open, customizable and free, vs iOS. That's why I'm making the switch (plus I couldn't stand the screen size of iPhone).
But now I realize Samsung is behaving like Apple:
- Knox highly discourages (prevents) rooting, just like Apple tries to prevent jailbreaks
- Firmware can't be downgraded, just like on iOS too
Part 1 is still acceptable under the pretext of corporate security, especially since end users generally have no issues getting warranty even with Knox tripped.
But part 2 is simply inconceivable IMO. No downgrading is just ridiculous. It's way worse than part 1 because at least users can choose to void warranty and ignore Knox, but part 2 is maintaining an iron control.
That is the really stupid bit. I have been upgrading, downgrading when I wanted to since the galaxy s days and now this not being able to downgrade really ppppppeeee me off. Didn't care about Knox and tripped it.... But...?... Let's set what's out there come September when my contract runs out
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
When I read threads on how which firmware versions are rootable (without tripping knox) and which aren't, they remind me of apple blogs posting about which iOS versions are jailbreak safe.
Can't believe I'm still gonna buy a note 3!

I get it. The hardware is still a good value, but I'll probably look elsewhere in the future.
These companies get too big and start to dictate what the user wants instead of listening... And when they are sitting pretty on top they tend to stop developing new innovations because "They are the best" and then the item tends to stagnate with VERY little actual developement thrown in. Anything new is a kneejerk reaction to the next up and comer for king of the heap....
They will still say it is for the best of the user but in reality its because they're too damn lazy to work. Then comes the copyright everything attitudeand the litigation and more effort is spent suing others for copyright einfingement than making the latest and greatest, what was Apple"s big thing a while back, oh yeah, lets make it white....
Works well for them and most users who have a hard time working out which end to speak in but not for those who actually want to own, use and control what their device actually does....
Take a lil bit, bit by bit til theres nothing less

It's not just Samsung others are going the same route, LG for instance says it got something similar to KNOX in the pipeline, HTC makes it difficult as possible to root their phones, Sony is also going to follow a similar path to Samsung & LG as they all want the corp market to buy their smartphones and feel safe, sod the general consumer that not interested in any of this.
The option in the near future if you want to tinker without tripping something or blowing an efuse is to buy a Nexus.
Its also because of the data breach that chinese and NSA are doing. They want our phones and its data to be safe. Not like modified system files with backdoors and trojans. So its for our own safety. Yes u can always change the layouts, launchers and other stuff. But changing kernel and rooting devices to use system procedures. These are just for developers and those who actually know abt stuff. Not for the common man.

Because Samsung need sale by millions on US like Apple but must be very Secured:
Quote from another post:
...The Knox Bootloader that is the first from a new type of bootloaders, block and not permit many things.
To understand what is the Knox and is bootloader and kernel read this:
https://www.samsungknox.com/en/overview/technical-details See also the video How to Use on it...
On the first attachment we see at left the usual Android, at right we see the Android whit the Samsung Security System Knox in white and the usual until now in blue. Whit this System people can have like two phones on one. A personal whit his own appl and a second secured to work on Enterprises and Governments and others.
The Knox Bootloader protect the secured part and not permit the flashing by Odin some files that it consider not secured like the oldest bootloaders. Then the Knox Warranty Void: 0x0 is first of all the Security System Knox secured. 0x1 is not secured.
For example I quote this from that doc/link:
Samsung KNOX offers a multi-faceted security solution rooted in the tamper-resistant device hardware, through the Linux kernel and Android operating system. The first line of defense against malicious attacks, Samsung KNOX is currently approved to run on US Department of Defense networks. (If flag 0x0, my opinion).

And there's your problem.
Android is open, customizable, and free - at source code level. However, individual implementations (such as Samsung's Touchwiz) have so such requirement to be so.
People like us, who like to hack around with our phones, are not the market that Samsung is aiming for. The vast, vast majority of Samsung Android users are never going to root their phone, manually upgrade/downgrade their firmware via Odin, or install custom ROMs. These users are *never* going to even thing about tripping Knox, let alone do anything that might trip it.
To be fair, Samsung are not alone in this - pretty much all major phone vendors are doing similar. Someone works out how to get S-OFF on the HTC One, and HTC release a patch to prevent it.
Going forward, I see a time coming where if you want to have complete control over your device, you will have to buy a developer edition.
Regards,
Dave

C'mon!!
OK. I've had rooted and hacked everyphohe I've had.. Since Nokia monocromatic days, Sony Ericsson devices and now android... I've used almost every custom ROM.. Applied hundreds of modifications, etc, etc... Trust me. Its funny how ppl complain about software and this Knox thing... Android continues to be on top of iOS for many many reasons... Many many reasons!!
I personally like to root .. Of course but with power comes disorder.. Yes maybe cosmetic custom is one of the reasons for rooting..and its fun. But as it comes with plenty of features so it comes with problems never experienced on stock.. Like freezes, restarts, etc, etc.. U know what am talking about.. Most of us have chosen the Gnote 3 for its innumerable capacities over almost every device on the market. It is a beast. No doubt. For me I haven't seen yet any modification or feature that make me wanna root my note.. It is a beast as it is now. Am not running KK.. Uh uh.. I'll wait for a more completed version... I have more than 15 years using cellphones and customizing them.. And now it seems that companies are getting to know what customers need in their devices .. That's why rooting will no longer be necessary.. Why don't you sit and think about this? I've root my Sgs2 and could have the multi window feature when it came out.. And the list goes and goes.. Arent you able to see we are going to another place now with stock phones?? Actually CM will have its on device sponsored by Google itself !!! See for example the multiple features of the moto x ... It is like R2D2 haha.. Personally I'm happy with the nowadays devices..let s see what's next...

At least Samsung will not shut down your phone and force update, like Crapple does, on Samsung at least you can disable updates. And blame other users as well for this lockdowns: how many people brick their phones when modding and then at least try to claim warranty repairs or exchange? I don't have to look far, my good friend rooted his Note3 and this made his Gear stop working. Couldn't fix it, so he took it to service center and strangely enough they did fix it for free (he may have unrooted first, I don't know), by bringing all to stock and he is a hacker, perfectly capable of figuring it out, just didn't want to bother I guess. And yes, because Crapple is so successful, many companies will follow suit, so blame all Crapple users as well. If Crapple was a total failure, no one would imitate them.

Soon change in a few years. You'll see Samsung become more and more like Apple in time.
Samsung used to be just another Korean electronics company, like what LG is today. Then they started copying Apple. The more they copied Apple, the more successful they became. It's this simple. Believe it. If you do what successful people do, you become successful. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it doesn't work.

Just like the sales of apple is now falling I believe it will also happen to samsung.
Another thing not related to your comment since they've stopped allot people from rooting and developing due to the warranty issues. Development is Damn slow now. Like they did with gokhanmoral (think thats how you spell it all credits to him) with the s2 they had cherry picked from his kernel tree to implement into the stock to make stock run even smoother. Now there's only really one kernel in development for the international model compared to what previous phones had where there were quite a range.
What's the point of having really high end specs if you can't really exploit them? and sticking to something which much lower and play 'safe'.

Locked Bootloader Rant (4.4.2)

TouchWiz is not the most horrid operating system I've run (it still isn't superb), but all the same, I'd rather be running pure AOSP (Android Open Source Project), but we need unlocked bootloaders. Come on Verizon, stop sucking! It is my phone and I ought to be able to do what I please with it. Imagine if you bought a fridge from the biggest and most powerful fridge manufacturer (Verizon) only to find out you were only allowed to put strawberries in it. Of all the foods in the entire world, the fridge manufacturer only allows strawberries in the fridge. Sure, it might be fine at first, but what happens when you want to make the fridge your own? As soon as you put a food other than strawberries in said fridge only to find the doors lock and the fridge stops working entirely. Now your fridge is useless because you wanted to support other people and make the fridge your own. If the farmers of the world want to survive, they need to strike deals with the fridge manufacturer in order to get their foods into the fridges. This is a monopoly. There is zero competition; everyone is at the mercy of the fridge manufacturer. This is what Verizon is doing with their phones. Either the developers give in to Verizon's insane demands (money and horrible contracts) to get the software on the phone, or they die out entirely and nobody ever remembers the developers even existed. Sure Verizon offers "Developer Edition" devices, but developers can't have a user base if users cannot install their software. What is the point of developing software for a device if nobody can use it? I'm just saying this is absolute garbage, and we should not take any more of it. Thoughts?

I think that comparison to the fridge is gold. I am completely on your side to letting my fridge have more than just these damn strawberries. Even though my current fridge is free, I still want my other other fridge to be free!

Well I had this issue with Motorola and we signed big petitions and got absolutely nowhere. They lost a faithful customer. So I bought this Samsung cause it was easy to do as I wish but they eventually locked it. I personally am not locked but my contract is coming due soon and development is slowly dying. So soon it will be time to move on to another manufacture which may be on a different provider. The question is, will I eventually run out of different manufactures as they all slowly lock down?? I don't know but I will continue to move to the next open device as they come. I am done with crap like this and I'm playing it smarter as I go each time by not buying the device the day it comes (not implying you did) out and keeping an eye on the forums for a month or two before I buy. I need to make sure the coast is clear before buying it. I will most likely be buying the next Nexus to be on the safe side plus their is always a ton of development for it. My contract will be up before it's released but I will just wait before I just buy another device cause I'm available to do so. This will obviously require me to move to another provider so no more Verizon. When my contract is up and they are knocking at my door with deals for a new device I can tell them to blow me. I have 4 phones on my account and you can be rest assured that everyone of them will be removed.
All I can say is rants like this don't get anyone anywhere. I totally agree with you and I'm glad your voicing your disgust and opinion but the best thing for us all to do is simply to move on. They just don't listen and they don't care.

This is sadly the world we live in today. Thankfully, the providers don't have us by the balls just yet, but I fear they soon will. That will be a sad day for the Android community. (Especially considering Android is open source.) Perhaps someday we will be able to publicly voice our concerns and equate our inability to unlock our phones' bootloaders to our (ability/inability) to unlock their SIM cards. It absolutely limits competition, and that's illegal. Thankfully Congress listened to the American people on the SIM card thing, but even if I can unlock my phone's SIM, I cannot use it on another network because my current operating system is locked to Verizon's network. We are literally half way there, but I doubt it will get any further, sadly.
i HATE touchwiz so much that i...dare might say it.... get the new iphone when it comes out. I am sick of VZW not having any really solid phones with pure google

Never..... I won't ever subject myself to having anything apple. My kids both have ipods but never will you see me with any apple products.
It is sad they choose not to go with Nexus products at all, personally I think they are really loosing out as tons of people want them but can't get them on this network. I'm still a customer because of the coverage. It's sure as hell not for the prices or even the ability to customize my own device. I don't care if they claim to own it, I pay for it and use it so it's mine plain and simple

Thoughts... change companies, because they really don;t care about you. We are a very small percent of their business, most people just use their phones as is and its not like you are going to stop using smartphones.

You hit the nail on the head with that one. My gf has been complaining about the OTA updates on both 4.3 and 4.4 and I told her I could root the phone, she won't hear anything about rooting. Big red will never hear or care about our plights that these are our phones. We can forget about them even caring about what we think

where to go?
my contract @ Verizon is o.v.e.r.!!! - I'm free- what phone to buy and where to go?? please, anyone, help!
I rooted my S3 (running kitkat) with towelroot- (have busybox and the gang) but the bootloader war is not over. I'm losing this battle with the bootloader and I have a day job... I just want a phone with as much freedom as i can get- any suggestions?

bootloader downgrade
There's a company in Caldwell Texas named Mobile Tech Videos and supposedly they offer a bootloader downgrade service for $50. I've decided to give that a try. Wish me luck, seriously.

Caldwell, TX is a small town. How'd you get along with that boot loader unlocking?
Had MF1, a week ago accidently flashed NE1.
Switched to Sprint, bought a S5.
Sold the S3.
Bye bye Verizon.

Sorry I've been busy and hadn't posted my personal experience, but I now can report that I cannot complain about my service with Mobile Tech Videos.
My Verizon Galaxy S3 is rooted and I am running CyanogenMod 10.2.1.
I paid Mobile Tech Videos to unlock the bootloader and install the ROM and I'm perfectly happy with my S3 now.

Nobody knows how they do it. And they certainly aren't going to tell anyone how they do it. That would be the easiest way to lose customers.

can i root my ATT G955USQU1AQC9 ?

Hello, First post, my apologies in advance if this is the wrong place but i have spent some time researching this question but i want to be sure before i brick a $850 phone...i have rooted a few Samsung phones but i think a lot of it was luck and part of it was being able to read instructions (from here, i might add)...i have read enough to believe i can safely root a G955USQU1ACQ9 android 7.0 Kernel 4.4.16-10895874 build NRD90M.G955USQU1AQC9 Knox 2.8
the reason i hesitate to do it myself is the above mentioned cost of this phone and, i saw a "one click root" type thing and used the function that allowed to see if the program can unlock my phone and it says it is not available yet.. i imagine they simply have not updated the program to include my phone but the phone itself is able to be rooted using the methods i see here at XDA for the G955U in general.
so my question is, is this particular phone root-able following the instructions found elsewhere on this site? thank you in advance
No, you can't.

From my own personal experience root is blocked in the USA for 2 main reasons.
1.) Corporate contracts - most companies will not allow root access on company phone. In order to steal contracts away from Apple corporations asked to have the phones be locked down tighter. This why even Tmobile locks their bootloaders now. A big part of this is government contracts as well. The USA government is extremely strick on which phone hardware anyone who contracts for them can use.
2.) Samsung Pay - (or tap and pay in general) It will never be allowed to work on a rooted of bootloader unlocked device. And in the USA they are pushing it hard because it is more secure than a physical credit card. Credit card companies lose Billions each year to stolen/lost cards and fraudulent charges. If they force everyone over to a tap and pay solution on your phone they will limit much of that liability.
Honestly I don't think it's a bad thing. The key really is that Google (Android) and OEMs (Samsung) need to continue to roll out the features users want. There should be no need for root anymore. The phone should have all of the features built in, or non root solutions should be found.
To be honest the only thing I miss from root is Viper4Android and even that there are comparable features built in now. I do think Support for older devices should be required as well, but I think Android is addressing that in 8.0 by segmenting out the system from the OEM over lays and drivers, basically allowing Google to push system updates straight to devices.

Please everyone realize the facade of freedom and voting is just part of the system of control. Cracks me up that people from the USA call out corruption and fixed election from countries all around the world, but somehow fail to see the same corruption and fixed election in their own country. So naive.
Relax dude less than %20 of the population of the country voted in the election. What that should tell you is %80 of the people are smart enough to know the election are rigged and %20 of people are still believing in a pipe dream.
LOl we went from Can we root this phone to XDA = Trump lol . I love this game
How about save the political BS for some other crap site and not fill up XDA with garbage. No one cares who or why you voted the way you do.

I don't know, it's kind of fun watching them spout of nonsense and cry. All you have to do is be different than them politically and the nice, warm, loving liberals turn into fascist anti-freedom thugs that burn campuses to the ground. Entertaining and it helps keep them out of power in the future.
I'm just wondering how this moron went from "Can I root my phone" to "**** you racists even though I have no idea who you are, where you're from or what your views are" ?
