So yeah guys this is a Discussion about a problem which may have others noticed too!
In this thread I'll would like to search for a solution of that problem. If anyone of you have the same problem and found or still search for a solution pls say it in this Thread and we can work togehter for a solution!
The bug itself:
Yeah the bug is very simple to explain.
At the left and top of your screen you have almost 2mm thick black stripes (see screenshot ).
You have these stripes also in booting, recovery and download mode.
Reflashing wipe data/cache/dalvik is not solution.
I have this problem since almost 3 month I would guess and I tried a lot to get them away.
So now I hope you know what I mean with the Black stripes bug.
If you have a question just ask.
Shadowcareful
Edit. The first Picture show the Blackstripes at the left side the second at the corner from top and left side and the last shows the difference from the left side and how it should be normal at the bottom.
Yeah I have had this bug ever since I put on my first stock-based ROM like 6 months ago. At first it was really annoying, but over time you do get used to it. I would prefer it to be fixed though. I only have the black bar at the right side of my screen as well

Maybe i can try to change resolution in kernel? But i will not test it on my phone

Someone on stock can test mb4 kernel and see if there is issue ?
Sent from my GT-I8160
It could be a problem of mb4 because I flashed my Gt-i8160P to an normal Ace 2 and that with mb4 and since that I have that issue
Actually it could be, I flashed mb4 after having gb for ages, and it did have the black bar from then
Sent from my GT-I8160 using xda app-developers app
Flash mb4 now and see if there is black stripe... Report me that.. I think i know solution
Sent from my GT-I8160
Well I have it now, I don't believe I can get it again (unless it would be on a different side). And plus I don't have access to a PC till tomorrow

Okay, I'll try tomorrow afternoon and update you
Sent from my GT-I8160 using xda app-developers app
Okay, to update you:
I just flashed it, and i have a black stripe at the top now as well as the right. It is this stock firmware that is mostly causing it. The top line is really going to bug me now, so if you are able to fix this then great
I will see what i can do
Sent from my GT-I8160
Any progress Rox have you found sth to fix it ?

I have ace 2 with gb and when i compare there is same stripe on the left and top like on jb screen... So it is hardware problem...
Sent from my GT-I8160
When I bought the Phone I hadn't these stripes only since installing mb4 and making my P version into a Non-P
Sent from my GT-I8160 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
no idea, then i dont have that stripes, i have just maybe 0.5 mm on the left and right ( no 2 mm , mine is practicaly unnoticable ) but right side is fully okay ..
thats weird

In same games it's a serious problem; for example in "cut the rope" when finding the hidding drawings
What I think about this bug:
What I think about this bug:
I think it can be a software bug as a hardware bug.
I say software bug because someone says it appeared after some upgrade, while someone says he has not that bug (upgrade or not).
I say hardware bug beacuse if I look at screen, powered off, under sunlight I can note the screen is not black in the same way everywhere: there are two lateral black stripe, lighter than the rest of the black screen, which are the same a lot of people note as the "black stripes" when screen is powered on. Is there someone else who notes this? Maybe, for some samsung's production error, some screens are not real "480 x 800" screens, but "something less than 480" x 800 screens.
Am I totally mad?

When ever my screen goes black in been opening apps or websites, I notice that there are lighter spots or smears, but they only show up on the black screen. Does anybody else have this, and or know what it is? besides on black screens, it really doesn't affect anything, but I worry it might get worse

There are quite a few posts on it. Some phones are worse than others. Both of our skyrockets have small identical blobs

The lines are driving me insane as well. The blobs are noticeable in clockwork mod in the dark. I see like a bunch of black dots on my screen everywhere.... Damn.. is Samsung planning on fixing this issue for our phones?
They say they are "looking into it."
I only ever see the blobs on otherwise black screens if my eyes are very dark-adjusted. One example is if the phone is off and charging, and I wake it up (but don't turn it on) in the middle of the night.
That is: the blobs are the next best thing to a non-issue for me. The lines are a minor annoyance that I can ignore easily enough under almost all circumstance.
Both exist though, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. A little disappointing to be sure.
I've found that the best way to evaluate your phone for blobs is to take your phone, set it to the lowest brightness setting, use the Gallery to display the color #101010 on it, put the phone in a dark room, then use a DSLR camera on the no-flash setting to take a picture of it. You need to have NO light at all coming from anywhere else, so a closet or internal room with a counter works best. It'll take about 10 seconds to capture, during which the phone and the camera need to be perfectly still.
Ignore the green tint - it's a side-effect of the overexposure.
My results:
Phone 1: My mother's Skyrocket, purchased about a year ago.
Phone 2: My Skyrocket, purchased about 6mos ago. I gave the link for this image to an AT&T Rep in the Warranty dep't, and got an RMA ready within 10 minutes.
Hello,
my Backbutton activates itself. While I am watching Videos, or whatever I do it stops shining and I am out of every application I'm using. After about half a minute it's shining again and I can use it normally. It's like pushing the button multiple times. Does anyone has an idea how to fix it? I tried different roms but it looks like an hardware failure to me.

Sending it back for support is not an option for me. I imported my device from the US to Germany. The support at Samsung Germany told me that they are not responsible for AMOLED devices.
My second problem ist that my IMEI is crashed since I flashed a rom where the dev made a little mistake. So Samsung won't give me any support.
I thought about changing the display but the price for a new one is about 190 Euro. Way too much... I can assemble and disassemble the device but I think that cleaning the device will not solve the problem.
Any suggestions?

It has nothing to do with the display though.
That's likely the part failing:

http://stellatech.com/samsung-gt-i9020-nexus-s-ui-flex,a,en,810423.html
Verify that the one you currently have isn't simply not connected right.
Thank you. I will have a look if the part is not right connected.
Maybe I have to replace it. But in that case 25 Euro are much cheaper than 190.

This happened to me once. A day later my display completely died. I could turn on my phone, answer calls, etc the touchscreen worked, but I couldnt see anything. I had to get a new one..
I had this problem too.
I flashed a different radio, and boom!! issue resolved
I occasionally get this too. It only comes up when I'm using cm/cm based kernels though, very odd. I'm on matrix right now and it seems to Beowulf, anybody have some tips or suggestions?

I tried a different kernel and it looks like the problem is solved. I know that you should not count your chickens before they are hatched. But I really think that the kernel was the problem.
Anyway, I am just happy that my phone is working properly.

I don't see how the kernel would have anything to do with the backbutton. Although if it worked out then hey that's awesome. Amazing how much I have learned by reading the forums on this site.:victory:
Just clean off the the backbutton, and maybe it will stop or you have a software bug.
I found smearing also happens not only in pure black background.
For example in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327389
The first post of the thread smears if I read with xda app using "xda free" display style (dark theme) setting. The first post has dark blue text in dark grey background.
I tried to capture a video but the phenomena cannot be seen in video.

Still, there are people here who keep on repeating smearing is fixed.
It's not and won't be due to its hardware nature. /working theory /

Might sound silly, I have tried to replicate this issue on my s4, I honestly cannot see the problem. Am I the only one? Normally I am the first to notice things like this, making me think that the issue is either sporadic or that samsung changed something in more recent units, (mine is about 3 weeks old)

Make a paint document and fill it with pure black. Then delete a white space in the middle. Open it from the phone and move the white dot around. If you get no smearing then - you have a normal phone and we have deffective units, which is not nice, but can be repared; or your brightness is very high. Lower brightness exaggerates the problem.
However, since MEA Samsung changed Settings' background to grey from black, which for me is a sign that they know about it and that's a hardware limitation. Pixels "lag", because it's the first time since Galaxy S that black actually is "turned off".
It's worse with grey on black than it is with white on black and also it gets worse the lower you have the screen brightness. grey on black at minimum brightness is an absolute mess on my phone. But i should stress you dont really see the problem in normal usage at all.
Hi, on firmware mdm so not the newest. I'll do further testing tomorrow
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Premium HD app
The darker the screen is, the more noticeable the smearing becomes.Touchwiz menus were black and now are grey, thats how samsung thought of to fix this but in certain apps with real black background it all comes alive again so i think this is a hardware issue as many agree also and its a bit of a let down to Samsung Quality Standards when we pay so much for a flaship device like this. Definitely there is room for improvment with this amoled screens.

I have not noticed any screen smearing till now.
Right, I have tested using the white dot in the middle of a true black image.
I can confirm the issue does occur, but only when the screen is set to or just above minimum and not to the extent I see it as a problem, I still cannot seem to replicate the issue on settings window even at minimum brightness.
For me, this is a none issue however If the issue is more prominent on some screens I can understand how it would be annoying.
Cheers
Steve

I may be one of the few to not actually give a rat's ass. I didn't care about it when the settings window was truly black and I don't care now when it's LCD-ish black (greyish-black).

with high brightness you will not notice the smearing problem. With low brightness is when you can notice it
Just try to read articles in Pocket app or in feedly using black themes.
I switched to ligtht/white themes killing battery life but avoiding smearing. Now my device lasts 3h screen time at best. F... great.
Amoled screen that's not really compatible with true black! The most advertised benefit of amoled is gone with this flawed screen.

Are you 100% sure about that? If that's really the case, it's probably some feature in the kernel that actually turns off pixels completely.

I haven't seen anything else posted, but I wanted to see is anyone is having the same issue as I am.
Basically, I'm getting what I think are row's of pixels flickering in the area of the screen that are gray.
Here is a quick vid trying to capture it. I can't post videos because I have less than 10 post, you are going to have to trust me for now...
I've also used the dead pixel finder app...everything looks good until I change over to a gray screen, if I stare at it, I can see the flicker...
I first noticed it when I flash Franco r10 (which is what I was on in the video). When I flash back to stock kernel or Bricked, it's much better. But now that I know it is there, I can still see it.
Anyone else having this issue? is there a fix or should I just send it back?
If it matters... LG-D820 White, 32gb
I'm guessing I'm alone with this issue and that it is a hardware problem.

I haven't noticed anything on mine, but I haven't flashed anything yet. Did you notice the flicker before you flashed the first time?
No I didn't notice anything until I flashed r10. But now that I'm looking for it, I can see it on stock and bricked ever so slightly.
I could live with it on the stock colors, but if this is hardware, I worry that it is going to get worse and not better over time.

I have the same issue and saw it as soon as I flashed franco kernel. Noticed that if you set brightness to 100% it will slowly stabilize but will still come back when lowing brightness. I called for an RMA, but cannot reproduce it as obviously on stock, so i'm also lost as to what it could be.
What did you end up doing?
On mine, I could see it on Stock colors, just not as bad... I returned mine on rma....
I recommend getting the app called display tester.
I don't have enough post for a proper link.
https:// play.google.com /store/apps/details?id=com.gombosdev. displaytester
Look for a bad pixel and go under the banding section for reason for rma.
My new phone didn't have any of the flicker /banding that my old phone did.
Good luck..

Sorry to bring back an old thread but I just noticed this not too long ago and didn't want to open a new thread. I noticed it while I was on stock first and thought flashing something might fix it. I've had mine since the beginning of November. Is the best option just to RMA it?

can you use a SlimPort cable or chromecast to mirror the screen to a TV and see if the flicker still happens?
So you'll know if the problem is in GPU or screen?!

This is just an issue of uneven aging of the individual LED's. Statusbar stays black most of the time so the pixels do not age as fast as other pixels on the screen.
Within time this makes statusbar appear more bright than the rest of the screen.
My 4 year old and still kicking strong Galaxy S1 (I9000) has this noticeable on any evenly colored image.
Now that I know of this, I use Tinted statusbar mod (requires Xposed) to keep statusbar from being black all the time. This means the LED's in statusbar will also age faster = more so with the rest of the screen.
