[Discussion] Galaxy S4 another screen problem - Galaxy S 4 General

Hello
I noticed that the colors in the notification bar are a little bit different than the rest of the screen, I notice that after a while since I updated to the official KitKat.
I don't know if this a Manufacturer defect or its not
The problem can be seen more clearly in gray colors.
I hope you check if this problem is on your device or not

I can't understand what you mean. Maybe a photo of your problem would be useful.

And when you scroll down right or left in black you find some purple smudges.
Some say it is normal bcuz samsung used some low quality equipment. And most of people have this.
Where is ur flipboard icon. Concentrate on it while u scroll between pages. You will find a black trace behind it.

Very low quality for a high end device of 2013.
Sent from my GT-I9506 using Tapatalk

i would not say low quality.. rather high end tech but not quite ready for mass production. apart from ****ing burn in.. i cant imagine the joy of the owner if that happens on 6000€ oled tv

take screenshot
copy it to your computer
compare between your screen and your truly phone screen
and write here back

This is just an issue of uneven aging of the individual LED's. Statusbar stays black most of the time so the pixels do not age as fast as other pixels on the screen.
Within time this makes statusbar appear more bright than the rest of the screen.
My 4 year old and still kicking strong Galaxy S1 (I9000) has this noticeable on any evenly colored image.
Now that I know of this, I use Tinted statusbar mod (requires Xposed) to keep statusbar from being black all the time. This means the LED's in statusbar will also age faster = more so with the rest of the screen.

Keyboard and other elements shadowing normal?

Hi,
My nexus s is new and since day 1 i just use it with 0 brightness.after hours of exploring, i noticed that when i open up the keyboard for more than 10secs and drag down the notification bar the keyboard boxes can still be clearly seen.its like a shadow of the keyboard imprinted in the notifiaction.noticed this in market as well when searching for apps the keyboard shadow can be clearly seen.also more than 5 sec static on your homescreen, after that i drag down i can clearly see the icons shadows in the grey notifocation bar. Is this normal? All of you have this behavior when on 0 brightness?or do i have a weak display?its kind of annoying sometimes.

Its sort of a burn image. The blues fade out and get a yellow haze. You can test this by displaying a blue image for example google image blue and zoom in. Auto brightness and sleeping the ohone when not using will keep the colors rich. I had a vibrant that did the same thing.

Sucks but it cant be fixed without replacing the phone/screen

Notification bar colour

Hi all,
Just wanting to confirm what colour everyone's notification bar is running stock sense 4.0?
I've just started setting up my replacement S and one thing that keeps catching my eye is the colour of the bar coming out of aps. One the home screen its transparent, but whilst using aps it's solid black.
Can't remember it catching my eye as much on my 1st handset and just wondering if there's a setting somewhere to change it.
Cheers.
Sent from my HTC One S using XDA
Mines the same. I think it's normal lol
Sent from my HTC One S using XDA
Ok, so think the colours are okay. Now I think I may have another issue that may be causing it to catch my eye.
When using an ap the bar is black as I said. When I hit the home button the bar stays black on the home screen for approx 0.5 of a second before it changes back to transparent. Enough as I say for it to catch my eye.
Would really appreciate it if someone else could do a wee test and see if they're phone is the same.
Thanks.

Smearing is not just in pure black background

I found smearing also happens not only in pure black background.
For example in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327389
The first post of the thread smears if I read with xda app using "xda free" display style (dark theme) setting. The first post has dark blue text in dark grey background.
I tried to capture a video but the phenomena cannot be seen in video.
Sent from my GT-I9500
Still, there are people here who keep on repeating smearing is fixed.
It's not and won't be due to its hardware nature. /working theory /
"Congratulations" to all the reviewers who missed such an easily to notice problem. I noticed it 5 minutes after launching this phone for the first time...
Couldn't believe my own eyes, almost cried after spending so much money on this device.

Might sound silly, I have tried to replicate this issue on my s4, I honestly cannot see the problem. Am I the only one? Normally I am the first to notice things like this, making me think that the issue is either sporadic or that samsung changed something in more recent units, (mine is about 3 weeks old)

Make a paint document and fill it with pure black. Then delete a white space in the middle. Open it from the phone and move the white dot around. If you get no smearing then - you have a normal phone and we have deffective units, which is not nice, but can be repared; or your brightness is very high. Lower brightness exaggerates the problem.
However, since MEA Samsung changed Settings' background to grey from black, which for me is a sign that they know about it and that's a hardware limitation. Pixels "lag", because it's the first time since Galaxy S that black actually is "turned off".
It's worse with grey on black than it is with white on black and also it gets worse the lower you have the screen brightness. grey on black at minimum brightness is an absolute mess on my phone. But i should stress you dont really see the problem in normal usage at all.
Hi, on firmware mdm so not the newest. I'll do further testing tomorrow
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Premium HD app
The darker the screen is, the more noticeable the smearing becomes.Touchwiz menus were black and now are grey, thats how samsung thought of to fix this but in certain apps with real black background it all comes alive again so i think this is a hardware issue as many agree also and its a bit of a let down to Samsung Quality Standards when we pay so much for a flaship device like this. Definitely there is room for improvment with this amoled screens.

I have not noticed any screen smearing till now.
Right, I have tested using the white dot in the middle of a true black image.
I can confirm the issue does occur, but only when the screen is set to or just above minimum and not to the extent I see it as a problem, I still cannot seem to replicate the issue on settings window even at minimum brightness.
For me, this is a none issue however If the issue is more prominent on some screens I can understand how it would be annoying.
Cheers

I may be one of the few to not actually give a rat's ass. I didn't care about it when the settings window was truly black and I don't care now when it's LCD-ish black (greyish-black).

Yep..it is not an issue for me...i have none of those probs while playing games or watching movies or wherever screen needs to show off itself..so y shud i care if my settings looks grey or there is smearing on some xda post..its not like m gonna read it while scrolling or anything..
I wud still prefer amoled over lcd anyday..
Again its just my opinion..everybody has a different view and i respect it..

You will notice if you play game "piggy drop"
Sent from my GT-I9500
with high brightness you will not notice the smearing problem. With low brightness is when you can notice it
Just try to read articles in Pocket app or in feedly using black themes.
I switched to ligtht/white themes killing battery life but avoiding smearing. Now my device lasts 3h screen time at best. F... great.
Amoled screen that's not really compatible with true black! The most advertised benefit of amoled is gone with this flawed screen.
What a shame.

Are you 100% sure about that? If that's really the case, it's probably some feature in the kernel that actually turns off pixels completely.

Anyone experience flickering?

I've played with all Note5's and Edge + phones on display and all of them had screen "flickering" present on high brightness and a white background, like the YouTube search feed or browser home page. It kinda seemed annoying, and I was wondering if you guys see it too. Everyone that I pointed it out to, saw the flickering. It's not bothersome, but I am wondering if it can get annoying under lower brightness conditions, during the night for example. It did seem more prominent on the edge+, but its visible on the note too. All the display model note 4's and s6's did not have such an issue.

It's the damn overheat protect on the display. It only happens when screen is cranked up. It happened on note 3, custom kernel can get rid of it.

Super AMOLED utilization

Hey Guys,
Just came from a defective nexus 6 and got myself a Samsung S6. This phone is very snappy with its response times to actions I make I'd just like to increase the utilization of the super AMOLED screen. I'm running Nova launcher and set my home screen backround to an all black photo but am getting this grey bar on the top of my screen. I believe it comes from the grey block that drops down with a trash can icon to delete home screen items using the stock touchwiz launcher. Anybody know how to get rid of it?
Also, with the lock screen. I've set my lock screen backround to be black aswel to reduce the amount of power used by the screen, for some reason when setting a black backround the lock screen's backround shows up as light grey?
My auto brightness setting is turned off BTW.

I've done that and I also have my notification bar set in Nova to not be showing.

The grey bar is still there though. It's hardly noticeable until you look closely but it is there
Sent from my SM-G920W8 using Tapatalk
I've noticed that too long back, it's very minimal and can be ignored on the home screen but when opening recent panel with all apps closed it's very much visible on top and bottom with grey lines, using a display tester app shows proper blacks and no such grey stripes exist, idk what's on with it but it's crazy so I've stopped using black wallpapers.
Lockscreen does get all grey and that's a software thing, you can use HiLocker or something else to get rid of it.
^ you are the MAN

For future users facing the grey bar issue. I factory wiped my phone due to a very fast battery drain I was experiencing and the grey bar is mysteriously gone ! My battery drain is also gone even though I restored all of the same apps I had on before.
