Computer USB connection

I have a galaxy s 4g I've been trying to root for her, its on 2.3.6. Every time I plug into the windows 7 PC it says USB device has malfunctioned. Pretty sure I installed the right drivers, but I could be wrong. I've also tried on my old winxp laptop but the same thing happens. The device starts charging but nothing else. Any ideas?

Have you tried multiple usb cables?
Yes I have actually

Did you install the USB drivers found on xda or from somewhere else? There are drivers for x64 and x86. If you installed it correctly and put your phone on USB mode, you should able to see and access the SD card on your computer.

I think I installed them from a website I googled. Do you have a link for the correct ones? Thanks in advance

There are a couple of ways. I use Odin which requires a different set than heimdall. With odin, Samsung's program kies or mini kies will load them up for you.
Heimdall (a one click program that bhuven & lumin30 have put together) will load up another set.
These two sets of drivers are known to clash.
Not sure of the direction that your going with the phone, but, if it's just to connect, Samsung mini kies would be the "manufacturer's recommended" route.

I was just trying to root with super one click, have had luck with it in the past. Will try installing kies and its drivers and using Odin tonight

I am on CM10.1 - 1st May build and new kernel by Adam
OKay i just realised that my data cable decided on die. Working with friend's cable. So i need to get new one.
This thread may be closed now.

Is Verizon trying very hard to make you use data?

When I would plug my old phone into my computer I could get my phone to appear as a removable drive. With the MAXX I plug it in and I get the install wizard and easy tether works.
No removable drive for file transfer.
What gives?

The CDROM thing auto launches, but the phone storage loads too in My Computer for me. Being on Windows 8, I get a prompt on how I want both to launch.
I may need a new OS! My personal computer is still on XP!

Do you have Motorola Device Manager installed currently? If so, do you have the most recent version (2.4.3)? That is probably what is needing to be installed
I thought I had the latest drivers. I will start with that.

I get an error when loading the software. That is why it hasn't worked like normal.

Did you edit out the getvar line?
Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk 2
Did you uninstall the old version before upgrading to the new version?
I did uninstall old drivers.
Getvar... Have to admit, I am clueless there.
This is required on a stock never rooted phone?

What error do you get when loading the software?
I will have to run it again. It is something the the effect of the software encountered an error during install and will not work.

That sounds Windows related to me. Win XP, Vista, 7 or 8?
There is a line in the download that has "getvar" in it that has to be deleted.

I have a xp netbook and desktop, and a Windows 7 laptop. Didn't have any issues or have to delete this getvar thing you speak of. I also didn't have to uninstall any previous versions of motorola device manager. When I installed the full app , it came up as an update.
I did notice once I had to switch the settings on my phone. Something about the media transfer protocol set as a camera.

Nexus 5 unable to authorize

My friend got a new nexus 5 and for some reason the window that usually pops up to authorize the computer does not show up. Tried different cables, debugging is enabled, tried hard reset, software is updated. My nexus connects and authorizes fine. Inability to authorize is preventing us from being able to flash custom recovery. I was able to boot device into bootloader mode and unlock it though, but no luck when it is booted. Any ideas?

Yes, you know how a window would popup asking to reject or accept when debugging is enabled? That window never comes up. So, apps like nexus root toolking or most adb commands do not work.

Sounds like you don't have the latest adb&drivers. This happened to me also. Those can undoubtedly be found somewhere on here by searching.

Not just the drivers, use a newer adb too. If that doesn't work you can clear the authorized devices on the phone and there is also a file located on your computer that I think needs to be deleted also.
My nexus was really picky on the debug 'handshake' whereas I had to remove all authorized computers/delete the file on my pc and use the newest adb and drivers - and even then I had to reboot the phone first (once everything was cleared) and use the newest adb & drivers to make it work right.

What does it say in device manager of your system?
I can see my device xt1033 there. And in that, mtp driver is not properly installed I believe. I can see an exclamation mark on that.
