Okay, now I know that there are other threads about this, but the issue is that none are specific to my problem. Either they are not for my phone, or my version is different or the thread is dead and with no replies. So I created a new thread.
Anyway, I was hoping that I could get a step by step procedure on how to root my phone and install a custom ROM.
The issue is, my KIES doesn't work (so help me with that also please) and moreover, I'm very new to all this so I don't quite get a few things.
Also, please tell me what are the best ROMs out there and if something does go wrong in the process, how do I un-brick my phone?
So I'm looking for active replies / repliers since I know I'll have a bunch of questions during the process.
Last, when I go to "about phone" on my phone it says "firmware version 2.2", but the little that I've looked up, people run 2.2.1. Does this mean my rooting process is different?
Thanks. And in case you want it, my kernel version is 2.6.32.9
Appreciate it.
rooting z4root
custom rom - pick a custom rom and follow instruction in that thread.
Your phone is already updated to 2.2 and that is the reason why kies doesn't show new updates. Our phone has 2.2 and not 2.2.1
If you use roms which doesnt have boot then it will not get hard bricked. soft brick can be fixed by reflashing.
What is the exact issue you are facing while using kies? Try a uninstall and reinstall. That should fix it
K, so I fixed KIES. I just had to update though, I was running on an older version. I didn't think a slightly outdated version would not detect my phone.. anyway never mind that.
So I don't really know what the best custom ROM is out there. could you suggest one? one that is fast (speed is really the priority), and not buggy, supports the apps that the stock ROM should. I'm willing to try three-four, so give me the names of the best ones out there.
Don't I need to root my phone before installing a custom ROM? If so, then I need to learn how to do that..
What do you mean it doesn't have a boot?
Well to figure out best ROm you will have to read up on each ROm. Each of them have separate thread where initial posts describe the properties of ROm. There are ROm comparison threads out there but that is just summary. I cant give you best choices. Everybody has different taste. Start with more popular ones, whose threads have more posts. More post -> more popular.
You can root using z4root.
Custom ROM are pre rooted normally so you need not root your phone before flashing custom rom

if speed is a prime consideration then i would suggest kyrillos rom..... fastest rom i ever used....... very less buggy.......
you can also flash lestatious rom..... it is damn fast and surprisingly stable!.....
and check dharam's rom collection too....... i'm using his ultra clean ultimate rom right now..... and it's good although since you are new i would recommend flashing a different rom from his collection.....
As for rooting.... you don't need to root before flashing a custom rom....
And in case you need any information about any of the features or anything.... just post it here ....... i'lll try to help you in whatever way i can.,.....

Hey i would suggest u to go for Indroid 4.3. I m using this and have seen many users jumping from lestatious and kyrollis to indroid.
As a begginer, u will also get many help in Indroid thread.
Z4root doesnt work in Froyo, if u wanna root, choose superone click.
U dont need kies to work, Use Odin to flash ur fone.
Make sure to learn processes better by reading through forums, if u dont wanna brick ur fone.
Hey!! I would suggest Indroid 4.3 or Kyrillos 5.6. They are fast as hey have lagfix.
And no you don t have to root your phone before installing a custom ROM. But if you want to root, use superoneclick to root.
And as for bricking, you can avoid hard brick by installing a ROM that does not have bootloader. Bootloader is a piece of code that runs before any operating system starts. So you should avoid flashing bootloader.
As for soft bricks, you can just reflash to come out of the soft brick.
okay so i was doing a bit of reading up and i realised the following :
1)First i need to download :
a) Odin (please post version number i have to get for my i5801 (or is it just one thing for all phones?) or a link please.)
b) some backup software. now i downloaded titanium backup, but it won't open because it says my phone is not rooted. so help me go about this.
c) a custom ROM. I think i'll start off with kyrillos rom since i've been told it's the fastest and very less buggy. i'll then move on to Dharam's ROM if i don't like kyrillos rom because Dharam seems to be a very active user, and quite friendly, and i feel he can solve the issues well. after that i'll try Indroid.
d) I also need superone click.
Question : Where do i download these? directly on my phone or on my computer?
2) I can increase my internal storage by partitioning a part of my SD card. Now I have a 4 GB SD card and i barely use it, so i don't mind giving upto 1GB of it. Please suggest the perfect amount. whether 1GB will be too much, or whether 500MB would be too less.
3) some apps do not work with custom ROMs. The app that i really want is 4shared. It's working currently on my phone with the stock ROM, so if someone can check if that will also work on the three ROMs that i mentioned.
4) soft bricking isn't much of an issue, but it's better i avoid it. so can someone give me a rather up-to-date guide (or link) on rooting, because the other ones are REALLY old. at least 4-5 months old and there have been some updates after that.
5) I can also overclock my phone. And from what I read up, SetCPU seems compatible with the above ROMs. And after flashing my phone with a custom ROM, my phone is automatically rooted. Correct me if I am wrong.
6) Flash player isn't available for our processor (V6). Since this is a hardware issue, there's no way i can make it work on some other ROM, can I? Because flash is a rather important software..
So that's it, I guess. Please add anything if i missed out anything.
PS : Does anyone know of any software using which I can download YouTube videos? Because the YouTube app kind of sucks, and buffering takes time since I don't have WiFi.
Wow!! Those are a lot of questions.
1) Link for ODIN.
ODIN>http://goo.gl/nCxCw
OPS FILE>http://goo.gl/ORin0
As for the backup software, Titanium backup is the best out there. As it can backup all the apps and all the settings. Yes you have to be rooted. So root and use.
And for rooting, use this tutorial,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011555
Don t worry about the oldness. This works. The link for superoneclicjk is available in that post as well.
Yes. Kyrillos is a good ROM. As it is prelagfixed and offer good internal memory as well after you partition your SD. Sizes, 512 MB ext4 and 128 MB linux swap. Rest of the memory you can use for storage.
As far as overclocking is concerned, in Kyrillos, you again have to flash a new kernel if you want OC.
And for the flash problem, only adobe can solve that problem.
And oh yes, most of the custom roms are prerooted. So after flashin you don t have to root again.

The rom is downloaded on your pc and flashed through it using odin.
I don't know any apps that work on stock rom and not on custom rom..... and 4shared works on kyrillos and indroid..... i've used it myself..
Most custom roms are already rooted and setcpu is the best app for setting CPU frequencies.
And as you said flash player isn't compatible with armv6 processors like ours.... so unless adobe makes it compatible no custom rom can do anything.
and for downloading youtube videos i'll suggest an app called you tube downloader or tube-X.......
Hope this helps...
Kernel
I flashed the indroid 4.0 Rom with Odin, and in short I will probably try to flash the indroid 4.3 Rom.
One question however, More and more I read about "kernel"(eg to get the 1% battery thing).
I know the kernel is the core of the operating system, but I don't understand how to use/apply it on my phone. Is the kernel something I have to flash separatly from the Rom, or is it included in the Rom?
If you need to install / flash it seperatly, where can I find the different kernels, and which one is recommended for my phone (Samsung Galaxy 3 Apollo)?
Hope someone can answer!
thnx

The kernel is included in the ROM itself. There are different kernels with different functionalities. For eg : - Most of the kernel that come with the ROMS are non-OC. So, if you want to overclock you phone, you have to flash the required kernel after flashing the ROM. The procedure is same using ODIN. Here s the link to the kernels.

Sorry for replying so late guys. Had a bit of an issue with the internet. Lightening struck somewhere near my house so it was down for a few days.
Anyway, thanks for all your help. I'll try to root+flash my phone day after as I have exams for two more days.
I'll post here if I have any other questions, but thanks a LOT for all your answers and help. But btw, what is the 1% battery mod?

if u have any other launcher like adw then go to settings > application > Adw launcher (for example) and press clear default.
Then press the home key, It should ask u to set detault launcher. Just click on the checkbox below and select touchwiz launcher.
Tell me if it works or not.
No I do not have any other launcher installed. At least it's not showing up there.. but i did try using the more latest version. 1.9.5. that seemed to work just fine. man, i was so scared before rooting this wondering what if something goes wrong. but that was easy
Titanium backup now and maybe flashing a new rom tomorrow (or in a couple of days, after my exam.) Thanks though! =)

currently on indroid 6!!
So i've been here on the Sidekick 4G forums since the day its been made. From the first thread to the one your on right now. And i saw as development began to pick up many new Sidekick 4G users or people new to android in general have questions and some of these questions get asked multiple times and is answered by the same people all the time. We all do our best to keep a friendly atmosphere on the forums and make everyone here feel comfortable and welcome. But sometimes when the same people answer the same question 30+ times they may get a bit impatient and loose their friendly outlook, although they mean no harm.. they can still get frustrated. So thats why i decided to make this thread, i saw how well it works in other Forums and hopefully it helps here too.
First and foremost, this is the development section, not Q&A. If you need to ask a question such as "how do i...", "what does...do/mean", etc post it in the general section as we do not yet have a Q&A. Or simply post it here and i'll answer it for you. it is much better than to have 5+ new questions in the Development section every week and such a small count of ROMs and other things that actually contribute to Development for the Sidekick.
So Lets begin - FAQ
Q - What is Android ?
A - Android is a Mobile OS for smartphones, more specifically it's a version of Linux. There are several versions to date and they all have names as well as version codes. The most recent (at the moment) are Froyo(2.2), Gingerbread(2.3), and Honeycomb(3.0). also theres the upcoming Icecream Sandwich(4.0).
Q - What is Root ?
A- Short answer: If you don't know, you don't need it. Long answer: root is equivalent in Linux to having administrator privileges in Windows. It allows you to change more system settings as well as run apps that need root access. It also allows you to flash custom ROMs as well as do a lot more. Root is for power users, not your average user. Can the average user benefit from root? yes but power users will benefit more. Root can also screw your phone if you don't know what you're doing.
Q - Where can i get root ?
A - There is an easy one Click root method Guide for the SK4G here [GUIDE]SuperOneClick - Root/Unroot Your Samsung Sidekick 4G

Q - How do I flash a ROM ?
A - Short Answer: In Recovery (CWM) wipe data and cache then install XXROMXX.zip from sdcard. Long Answer: Download XXROMXX.zip and put it on the Root of your SDcard, Reboot into recovery and wipe your data and cache from the main menu. Then if you are on a orange Recovery be sure to Check your Mounts (if on RED VOODOO CWM then no need for this) to make Sure they look like this under "Mounts and storage" selection in CWM:
"UNMOUNT CACHE
MOUNT DATA
MOUNT SDCARD
UNMOUNT SYSTEM" - if they do then its safe to flash the zip select flash zip. Now go back to CWM main menu and select install zip from sdcard>choose zip from sdcard>XXROMXX.zip>yes, and the ROM will begin to flash. Once done if your on Orange CWM recovery check your mounts again to make sure they are still the same then select Reboot System Now.
Q - How do i get into recovery ?
Manually, Using the 3ButtonCombo (VolDown+VolUp+POWER, simultaneously) . Or while on the phone, Use an app like quick boot and if your ROM has an extended power menu you will have a recovery option that will boot you into recovery.
Q - How do i Flash a Kernel ?
A - The Same way you would flash a ROM
Q - What is a Kernel ?
A - A kernel is the core of a Linux OS, it's what all the other software is built around. No core/kernel, no OS. A custom kernel enables features that the stock kernel didn't have such as OCing and/or Ext4 capability
Q - How do i flash a modem ?

Q - I tried to flash a ROM now my phone is stuck at the "Sidekick 4G" Slash Screen HELP !?!
A - Most likely you missed a step in the installing process, possibly didnt check your mounts ? try a battery pull, then well if you can get back into recovery try wiping and trying the installation over carefully. If that doesnt work or you cannot get into Recovery your phone can still be recovered you just need to ODIN back to stock
Q - What is ODIN ?
A - Its a firmware flashing software for samsung devices, you can use it to restore you phone back to stock incase you need to return it or if you have softbricked your phone (or whatever else reason), you need to be in download mode for the program to Detect/connect with your device
Q - How do i get into download mode ?
A - Easy way is Using simultaneously holding the Trackpad+volDown+Power. The Fool Proof way is described here in this short post a made for another person having trouble getting into download mode

thanks, no need to quote the entire post though cause its pretty long
Sorry ^.^ breh
very hepful faq. much needed imo.
although, i do have a question. i have orange cwm, where can i find the flashable *.zip file for red voodoo cwm?
ive been messing with android for a while, so im not a noob, but i just cant seem to find an answer to this question.
thanks
EDIT: ahhh, nevermind i found the answer. the "reboot into recovery" option in rom manager takes me to orange cwm, but manual button combo takes me to red voodoo cwm. so all is good. thanks
Red CWM is only found in the Bali kernel, as it includes the Voodoo Tweaks, that are only implemented in the Bali kernel. Orange CWM will work fine if you wish to use a stock kernel and CWM.
Another question to add:
How do I flash these Extras? AOSP Lockscreen, Battery Icons, etc.

What is busybox?
Hi, last night I installed lighting rom and I see this Busybox installer. What's that for? SHould I ionstall it? (noob explanation please) Thanks
Busybox is a system tool kit, that provides a small, but extremely useful version of most system tools. It is smaller than a full blown gnu-utils install, providing core utlities to the system and usr, while saving space, ideal for embedded systems like your phone. The sidekick stock roms use toolbox, which is a completely barebones tool kit, borderline useless (imho).
The system itself is fine with toolbox, and most busybox installs leave toolbox as the primary tool.
Why you as a user would want to install busybox is convienence, as the busybox tools are infinetely better. If you dont muck around with the system (through connectbot or android commander or adb) and dont install any apps tha specifically need busbox (some root required apps might need it) you will never use it.

A very good FAQ, very informative. Thanks.
Thanks! Great thread...tons of information.

My Sidekick 4g is running very slow. I've started shutting it down at least once a day, but even when it first boots, it runs slow.
It's stock...right now. Trying to figure out which ROM would be best...I am not a heavy user, and I have the 3G turned off, in a feeble attempt to conserve battery life.
Assuming I can get this rooted (looks simple), does anyone have a suggested ROM I should try for speed and good battery life?
Thanks!

Turning 3G (or did you mean 4G?) Off won't really save battery life since your internet runs on the same radio (sprint's 4G wimax uses different radios so having 4G on sucks battery life bad) turning off wifi and gps will help a little. You should definitely flash a custom rom, they will help in both speed and battery life. You can go by date, the newer the ROM is the better because the devs have been able to grow and add more tweaks over time. Currently glorious overdose is your best bet, ICS looks promising but has some bugs to be worked out to make it good for every day use.
I think I got root...not sure how to check.
SuperOneClick didn't work for me, though.
I put the ROM on the SD card, booted into recovery, and it says it is in manual mode. Tried installing the ROM, claims bad fingerprint.
Ugh.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
I'm not able to get root access, it keeps getting stuck on step #7, what is strange is that apps that would normally only work on rooted phones, work perfectly well on the sidekick now, even though superoneclick claims that my phone is not rooted. It seems I am semi rooted? Sounds stupid, but those apps work.

can i get a new bootloader?

Use Titanium Backup to update superuser. If you really have root, then su app is all you are missing. What's step #7?
Hello, I've been using lightning Rom on my sdk4g for a while now and it's giving me a hard time so I want to try something new.
1. Could you recommend me the latest and best Rom for my sidekick?
2. What are the steps to change Roms?
Have a nice day and thanks in advance! :0)
4G Random Bootloop
Hey guys, I rooted and flashed Bali 2.2 and a custom rom thinking it would fix the random boot-loops, but it hasn't. It's not all the time, just sometimes, maybe when the cache is too full? I remember old versions of CM used to have random reboots when the cache was full. But I'm not sure why the phone would just do that. I'm seeing suggestions to flash back to odin, but I'm attempting to avoid that. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

To begin with, Welcome to XDA Developers
Please review the LG Optimus One FAQ for answers to commonly asked questions.
As for which ROM is better... That's really a matter of personal preference. I'd suggest reading the FAQ first before making a hurried decision.
Starting with CM7 ( Android 2.3 ) all ROMs are for new baseband. From what info you've supplied your device is old baseband. If you choose a P500 specific ROM CM7.2 or later you will also need the old baseband patch. There is a link in the FAQ I mentioned above for downloading it. Should you decide to use any of Rasheds ROMs, just use the P509 variant. It's hardware is identical to the P500 but the P509 will always be an old baseband device. Rashed include the old baseband patch in the P509 and P506 ROMs. Do NOT flash a P506 ROM on your device. The touchscreens are different so they have different drivers.
Best of luck and once again, Welcome to XDA-Developers

NEVER use ROM Manager with this device. Flash old baseband patch after flashing the ROM. Once rooted, you can use FlashImageGUI to flash a custom recovery. Then reboot device to recovery and following flashing steps posted in the FAQ. FlashImageGUI is an application ( apk ). You can download it from Play Store. ROM must be on SDCARD to flash it via recovery. You can also use Android Flash Recovery to flash a custom recovery if you prefer using Windows. Link is in my signature. The download contains the drivers needed for Windows to detect your device. You must install them before attempting to flash the recovery. Drivers are located in the usb folder in the archive.

Honestly I'm not sure. I've try not to use KDZ because of all the devices that have been bricked by it. I'm not saying that yours will get bricked, but I was never willing to try. I still have a P509 but I don't use it anymore except for testing apps that I write. KDZ has bricked 2 P506's for me. But, I think the issue was that I left the SIM card in the device. Not sure tho. Sorry I cannot give you a more direct answer.

It will update your recovery to the newest stock recovery is my guess but that won't work. Stock recovery doesn't allow for custom ROM installations. As I mentioned earlier, you will need to install a custom recovery and not thru LG Update. Along with Android Flash Recovery ( AFR ) there are many other tools here at XDA that are far safer to use than LG's software since most of LG's stuff is crap. Just do a little searching and you'll find what you're looking for. My job is not to give you all the answers you want, but to point you in the right direction. Here at XDA we stress using the Search feature.

Ty so mutch dude You helped me a lot today
Hi, guys I'm new to android phones...but I'd love to know more about them and about these custom roms...so the point is that I read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2519448 and I don't know how to start ... I have a LG L5 E610 and the default ROM is a little slow...I need to mention that my phone isn't rooted...is brand new...so pls can you help me...I searched the Internet but I founded so many things and I'm kind of mix up...
Go to this subforum for your phone and read up on what's needed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/optimus-l3-l5-l7
The procedure varies slightly from phone to phone but you first need to unlock your bootloader (the first unlock will wipe any data you have stored on the phone, make sure you backup first)
And most importantly don't be afraid to ask as many questions as you need, we were all noobs once
Also, once you got a custom recovery installed, make sure you do a full backup before experimenting, that way you always can get back to a working device no matter what happens.
Good luck and enjoy.

Ok...first I rooted my phone with this http://androidteen.com/lg-optimus-l5-e610612-android-4-1-2-how-to-root-and-install-custom-recovery/ and then I followed this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2519448
first I wiped data ..and after that I installed the ROM and after that Gapps...and now the phone is working but when I am on 3G, apps like youtube, exhange mail stop working..."unfortunately YouTube has stopped working"...what to do...is this problem related to Gapps or my Internet Acces VODAFONE RO or this UNOFFICIAL ROM from cm...and I wanna ask you another question if you don't mind HOW CAN I UNINSTALL GAPPS...?..maybe is from the .zip file ...you know better...sorry for my english
ok so i have my verizon galaxy s4 finally rooted, and i know it is because i have used multiple apps to check. now i have no idea what im doing because i cant find any guids. my friend told me to download ROM manager and i went through the process and i know i have clockworkmod recovery installed. so i went to the next step which he told me to download and install gapps. also he told me to whip my device completely at some point and i dont have contact currently with him. was i supposed to whip my device right after i rooted it and then get rom manager/gapps/ext..?
also, if i didnt need to do that then i fallowed instructions on the internet for how to install the ROMs and i downloaded gapps but how do i install gapps? and when i go to the boot menu where im supposed to install them it pulls up something different and the only options are to:
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
appy update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cash partition
apply update from cache
PLEASE HELP!!!
What have you done?!!! OK after you root its not necessary for you wipe your data or system! ROM manager is a necessary tool although its a good tool for peopl who flash their phones very often
I suggest you to head over to the galaxy s4 sub forums and find a suitable ROM for you , the install instructions are mostly the same for all ROMs, but some ROMs have specific ways to install, details about which will be provided in the ROMs thread.
