Best kernal for Chromi-x? - Asus Transformer TF700

Hi all,
I've installed Chromi-X (stable) on my TF700t, and still see a lot of lagging. I didn't install a kernel with it. (does Chromi-X have it's own kernel?)
Anyway, I've seen some good comments on Karsh (sp?) kernel, but can't find it. Also, I didn't wipe! Maybe that's the problem?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

You may need to disable FSync and a clean installation that will speed things up a lot. You can use kernel installer by sbdags to test out all the kernels that works best for your usages.. Good luck..

Yikes you mean you installed it for the first time and chose do not flash a kernel. In escence you may as well have just flashed stock..... First time flashers need to choose a kernel other wise you have restricted root, not init.d script support and a very laggy device. Flash it again and choose thatv5
I never considered that someone would choose no kernel on the first flash from coming from stock....

My bad.., thanks.

Thanks for the quick response
Somewhere I'd read that some roms have embedded kernels. Don't remember the script I used mentioning any either, not that it make any diff...just my inexperience.
How do I find "thatv5? Is it a separate download or part of something else?
Sorry to be so slow.

It is an option when flashing the rom.

Also you are on an outdated version of CROMI-X and I bet your recovery is not the latest either.
Since you are at it anyway: Why not start with flashing the bootloader/TWRP package from the OP, boot back into system, then back into recovery, then flash CROMi-X 5.0.4.
You will see many options to choose from, one page being the kernel options. If in doubt stick with the default option.
I kind of pity the folks who have not followed this thread for the last few months. It would take me a week to understand all the options we have now.... ET, cache2sd, data2sd, what is it: 5 different kernels?, fsync - to name just the major choices...
You don't HAVE to wipe data, but I would do it before a major update. Or try without and do it if the tab behaves strangely or still has lag.
A Factory Reset in TWRP should do it. This will wipe /data, but not /data/media and that's where your pictures, files, videos etc live (naturally you have a backup of that data anyway, right?). You will have to reinstall your apps though.

Thanks

Choosing OC Options on _that v5
Speaking of Kernels...on _thats v5 OC options, I found a happy medium between speed, stability and battery was the "1318" option. The (1518) seemed to create a small but noticeable battery drain on "Balanced" mode. With 1.3GHz it still keeps it running very smooth but you still have the 1.8GHz on Performance.
(Sidenote: After reading this post I have to say to the both of you; sbdags being the Master CustomROM King you are so patient with us newer folks which is above and beyond for starters and berndblb; you are Everywhere Man! giving straight forward advice and filling in the gaps here and there, even answering one of my posts in Q&A which gave me a new sense of what I wanted)
Someone just wrote on the Development OP that following it should translate into some kind of a college degree, I agree and I highly recommend that you use it while checking out all the new options.
Happy Tweaking

I flashed kernel tweaks "TF700T : _that 10.6.1.14.8" but forgot to do # "4. Wipe caches (cache/dalvik cache)" before rebooting.
Should I go back into recovery and do a wipe, everything seems to be running OK?
I am on Cromi-X 5.0.4 using _that kernel.
Also didn't have to do # "5. Fix permissions"

I've yet to see an explanation what wiping cache would be good for on the TF700 - I think it's totally useless (until someone comes up with a plausible explanation).
Wiping dalvik-cache is recommended but not required when the Android framework changes or when system apps are removed (usually both due to installation of a new ROM). If you only install a new kernel, it's pointless and only wastes time.

[Q] Tired of speed issues. Unlocking/ROM options?

I'm tired of the random reboots and random performance issues on my tf700. I'm ready to give unlocking and custom ROMs a try, but am unsure of what my best options are. I've been reading up for a couple of hours, and there are a few questions that I have that weren't answered conclusively in my readings.
Some pertenent information:
My TF700 is rooted, locked, and on firmware 10.4.4.25
I have experience using command lines, ADB, CyanogenMod and ClockworkMod on my Nexus S phone
I have a UHS-1 64GB external MicroSD card installed
Now on to my questions:
NVFlash. Is there a way for me to install it? Can I downgrade my firmware to make it work, or am I completely SOL until ASUS release an update that doesn't block it? How dangerous is it to not use NVFlash? My Nexus S can recover from a plethora of bad flash situations, even with the recovery partition. At worst, I can just flash directly through ADB. Is the TF700 as versatile, or are there added pitfalls I should know about?
ROM suggestions? I have the keyboard dock and use it all the time (including plugging in USB devices), so the ROM would have to support it. Ideally I would like a ROM that has (at least) all the features of the original ASUS firmware, but better performance.
Should I be doing the Data2SD mod? Does it noticeably improve performance substantially?
I have a lot of large games installed, and would like some kind of App2SD support to move them to my SD card. Do any of the ROMs provide that?
Thanks! Let me know if you would like me to elaborate on any of these points.

NVFlash: unfortunately you cannot get it with newer firmware than 9.4.5.26, and you cannot downgrade below 9.4.5.30. The biggest danger of not having NVFlash: if your recovery is broken or incompatible with the bootloader and you choose 'wipe data' in the bootloader menu, your tablet is hard bricked - it won't even respond to fastboot.
ROM: if you want an improved ASUS ROM, use CleanROM Inheritance. However I cannot guarantee that you won't have random reboots - even I have them, and I am the maintainer of the slightly improved stock kernel used in CROMI...
Data2SD: I have no personal experience other than some experimental use, but with a fast card, people report performance improvements.
App2SD: I don't know of any native support in CROMI, but it should be possible by creating some symlinks and bind mounts to put any data wherever you want.
The answers are much appreciated!
So there is little-to-no risk to not using NVFlash once I have a stable recovery mod on my recovery partition? All I have to do is make sure that I can boot into my recovery before I run a 'wipe data' and I should be fine?
What's the best recovery mod option? I've only ever used CWM, but that's on my phone. Is TWRP (or something else) a better option for the TF700?

Right - always test a newly flashed recovery with the power+volume button first before using any app or option that automatically reboots to recovery. Also don't flash standalone bootloaders if they are incompatible with your recovery. And don't erase your recovery with fastboot.

I don't understand the random reboots. I never get them. I use your kernel v4 and CROMI (obviously). I wonder what the specific scenario is to induce a reboot?

Agreed. I run the stock kernal and Cromi and have no reboots. I have maybe 3 times since I started using Cromi, but thats been 3-4 months now. Plus it expected when testing different things.

Unfortunately, I still don't know what triggers it. I found and fixed one kernel bug that causes a reboot when reading a specific file in /sys - this was easy to fix because it is a very simple kernel function with a very simple bug, and it was reproducible with a simple shell command.
One other "random" reboot I had at least twice seems to be related to invalid data in the timer subsystem - I suspect it is some locking problem (race condition between multiple threads), but that's hard to find and fix - especially if you don't have any experience with the code or with kernel development generally.
For now the best we can do is collect crash dumps from /proc/last_kmsg and try to find some pattern.
Any chance you will release _that v6 kernel with the fix you have so far?

I planned to wait until more significant changes accumulate, but if you want to include it in CROMI 3.4.7, I can send you the blob.
Too late - upload in progress But next time if nothing much has happened I can include it.

[Q] Camera firmware update problem

Hey all, I've recently been running into a problem where when my tablet restarts it starts updating the firmware to my camera and then will tell me there's another update for the camera's firmware once I'm at the home screen, and it happens on every restart. Normally I wouldn't mind this inconvenience but I've been wanting to use hunds oc kernel and my tablet isn't able to boot/upgrade the camera firmware unless I'm using the stock kernel.
For what it's worth I'm on the most updated version of jb, 2.5 twrp, unlocked, rooted, running cromi 4.6.1, and on camera version tf300t-000128. If anybody could provide any assistance it'd be greatly appreciated, I've already tried a factory reset.
Also, if it'd be easier, I have titanium backup pro and I wasn't sure if there was just something I could freeze that would stop the firmware updates from happening
Bump, anybody?
Well the firmware is included in the latest rom from Asus so you should accept it. It is normally a one off thing. Not sure why you are getting two?
If you look in the zip for the rom inside, system you will see a firmware folder. Delete it then trying flashing CROMi-X again.

Questions about installing CleanROM

Hey everyone. Just joined the tablet world and bought a TF700T because the specs looked awesome (2 weeks in). I have to admit though i was extremely disappointed on how it performed stock. So i took the plunge, voided the warranty by unlocking it, then rooted it to install GooManager / TWRP and then flashed CM10.1.2 on here. I did a format, fresh data but i have to say its still not up to par. I did a side by side with my Galaxy S3 and its out performing the tablet (same ROM).
I saw a video for CleanROM and my jaw dropped. Being that im kindve new to the scene i truely dont want to hard brick something i just bought. I was getting discouraged by the CleanROM instructions a little.
My question is - Since i have already unlocked the bootloader (VIA the asus website), rooted the device and already have a custom rom do i just need to download the CleanROM zip and flash it? It says format so in that assumption i should have the CleanROM zip on a micro SD? Alsoshould i get ODEX or DEODEX? I read the difference between the two and im thinking DEODEX.
Thanks everyone!

I would recommend Cromi X Ver. - 4.7 which is more up to date version. Read this post:

I use deodex. Sbdags uses odex as he mentioned in an earlier post. I will probably change in my next update. Use what the master recommends.

If you were already on the latest Asus ROM before moving to cm 10.2 then it should be fairly easy to switch to CROMi-X. You will need a full wipe though. I'm assuming you did that when going to 10.2 as well as that would cause all sorts of issues if you didn't do it.
What is about the instructions of CROMi-X that makes you nervous?

wow that super annoying. So i had this long typed out reply and it force closes on me as i open a tab to get a benchmark pic...
i was getting discouraged with the bootloader and what one i had, did a quick research and found out how to find the bootloader version and i was set to just flash. Wiped with TWRP and come to find out the .zip ROM had a nice install and that also gave an option to wipe which i did.
something just still aint right IMO. I keep getting major hiccups. Installing an app is a nightmare, takes forever and stalls the system. The whole thing with the system just force closing the browser just now was annoying... just opened a tab. I have 11 chrome tabs opened on my S3 and its handling it with out even blinking. I have 2 bench mark pics, one of my S3 (scored 4834) and the TF700T (5696). But this TF700T seems to get major hiccups and stalls. Not quite understanding what could be causing this. I have checked performance to be on, checked to see if there was some bloatware or un-needed apps that ran in the back ground (none), and installed adfree just incase type of thing.
Is this usuall? Or is there something i could try to make this perform like my S3 (basically no system hiccups and great processing speeds)?

No - assuming you are on CROMi-X 4.7 - this is not usual.
But to be able to give advice, we need to know a lot more specifics.
To flash Cromi-X you should be on bootloader version 10.6.1.14.4 or .8
You should have TWRP 2.5 or 2.6
What did you wipe in TWRP? Coming from CM you have to do a Factory Reset in TWRP prior to flashing CROMi-X.
The Aroma installer only wipes Cache and Dalvik - that is not enough.
Do a factory reset and reflash Cromi-X.
If that does not work, format data (under Wipe > Advanced), but backup everything you care about since this will wipe all your data. Then reflash Cromi-X

Re-Wiped/flashed again right after my post. Seems to be acting more - professional. I use(d) advance wipe both times and checked everything but the sd card as well as using the wipe in the ROM installer. Couple things i did differently on this run of it though was used the stock kernal. Last time i used the first on the list by _that. Both times i didnt use fsync option. This run also i didnt enter the gmail account right away on the setup wizard. I figured i would let the system settle in before installing apps. What sucks with that though is through the wizard the tablet will auto load the apps but entering them in after wards it never auto loaded the apps, no biggy though... prevented a lot of unwanted apps.
How risky is disabling the fsync? This is going to be a tablet that mainly will be used for like web browsing in desktop mode and netflix/youtubing. Not saying apps wont be ran but more or less a glorified netbook. Since its going to be touched by multiple users (as well as ones under the age of 4) what kindve actions could happen for data to start being jacked up by disabling fsync? Im still kindve put off by how i feel like my phone is a bit snappier than this table. Im thinking though its because the S3 is set with 2 gigs of RAM and the TF700T is 1 gig?
Quadrant Standard test results:
Samsung Galaxy S3 CM-10.1.2: Total-4742, CPU-5631, Mem-11200, I/O-4197, 2D-501, 3D-2180
TF700T CROMi 4.7: Total-5403, CPU-14135, Mem-3749, I/O-6503, 2D-570, 3D-2059
But all in all - A LOT better than what the stock was, better than CM 10.1.2 on tf700t and better than the last attempt of CROMi.
Do you guys have a pref on kernal? Fysnc disabled? Launcher? Browser (been using dolphin cause i can force desktop websites better than stock and chrome doesnt even have the option to force at all times)?
Thanks
EDIT: Have 10.6.1.14.8 bootloader and TWRP 2.6

Do you guys have a pref on kernal? Fysnc disabled? Launcher? Browser (been using dolphin cause i can force desktop websites better than stock and chrome doesnt even have the option to force at all times)?
Thanks
EDIT: Have 10.6.1.14.8 bootloader and TWRP 2.6

About the risk of Fsync, you can go to the Cromi X first post and read about it. _that explans the definition of Fsync by the end of the first post.
About the RAM, you are partially corrrect about it. The impotant thing about memory is how do you use it, not how much do have available. So you need to give your system a llittle more memory than the current setup in case your device needs it under a heavy load.
About your score, I believe that it is a little low for the custom rom and custom kernel. By looking at your score, you need to optimize your I/O and your memory in order to make it smooth and lag free.
About the kernel, it is a personal prefferences. I am using Hund at the moment and Fsync is disable. I am also using Apex and stock browser. I hope that helps..

thanks for the info
The only way to optimize I/O though is to disable fsync at this point or are there other options that can be done?

Disable Fsync is a big boost in speed if you don't want to do it. You can try these out.
-Go to your init.d
-Open the 50CleanTWEAKS file and play around with the "read ahead buffer" with the optimal number for your I/O. This will optimize your read speed.
-add these on your data mount: discard data=write infront of the "/data" line. This will optimize your write speed.
Also, if you OC your CPU, you will see the increase in you I/O number.
Good luck.
Hi,
Sorry for my english, I'm french
My ASUS TF700T is under build 10.6.1.14.8 Jelly Bean 4.2.1 WW, Kernel 3.1.10, Bootlaoder unlock + Root OK, and in the latest version of TWRP installed with GooManager (not 2.4 or 2.5).
Am I OK to install the CROMI X 4.7?
I need to flash the kernel also or not?
thank you

Yes, you are good to install the Cromi X 4.7. During the Cromi X installation, the rom will have a section for you to select a custom kernel. If you are a first time with custom rom and kernel, I suggest for you to use _that kernel without data2sd..
OK thank you LetMeKnow!
I will do as you told me
See you soon

Thanks for all the great info but i think this unit is shotty. I disabled fsync, have chromix on there but it just doesnt feel like the specs on paper meet in person. It still gets balled up at times and our phones (samsung galaxy nexus & s3) seem to be snappier and less glitchy. they only thing i havent tried is the last suggestion about entering into int.d just because that was something new that i couldnt find much info about. Currently its sitting in a box now with a return label... kindve disappointed... wondering if i should get an ipad (mini) or note 8

I am not sure if I understand your question correctly but I will try... I don't know anything about the note 8 because I never own one. However, I currently own both ipad2 and tf700. I believed that ipad mini is using A5 chip which is the on ipad2. I can tell you the different between the two. I did compare a side by side on these units. In short, over all with a custom rom and kernel I would pick the tf700 over ipad2. I would pick the ipad2 if you are using the stock rom on the tf700. My tf700 is running a lot faster comparing with the ipad2... I don't understand why there are so much differences even though we are using the same hardwares and softwares.. I hope that helps clearing up a little bit. It is just my two cents. About the init.d, if you are using the same rom as I am, I don't have any problem sharing what I have wiht you..

[SOLVED] Cromi-X - TWRP doesn't display any customization menus?

Hi all,
When installing Cromi-X 5.0.4, I believe TWRP is supposed to display some installation options? However, after I select the file to install, it flashes the ROM then reboots ... but doesn't provide me with any customization options like which launcher to use, DPI, etc?
Is this expected?
Thanks.
OMG... I was flashing the wrong file - the boot loader over and over.
Anyways is there a way to delete this thread?
LOL!
put [SOLVED] in front of your thread title and edit/delete your posts if you don't want people to see your brain fart!

Thanks for putting together the CROMI-X ROM ... it made my TF700 usable! My TF700 was collecting dust for the past few months due to sluggish stock ROM and previous CROMI versions.
CROMI-X has turned the tablet into something usable, so I'm very happy about that.
Thanks sdbags!

I see no reason why you couldn't. I only advise you to flash the CWM recovery first, then do all the wiping as mentioned (note that this will be a clean install, so back up anything of importance to you).
If you are paranoid enough (this generally applies to any ROM installation), you can enter CWM, and mount + format ALL the partitions you see there one-by-one. After this (rather extreme preventive measure) boot into recovery again and do whatever you wish.
Please do tell me about you installation experience, so others could learn, and I could improve the instructions.

flashing works without problems. do not forget to wipe dalvik cache because device will hang on boot if you forgot this!!
its not my primary device any more so i have not really test it now.
will test a bit more and report back.
want to sell my device and have to be sure that everything works without problems
Finally a custom kitkat rom for our Padfone 2!
I am on the latest stock kitkat version of the device. I really want to test your rom, but i am a noob and have no experience on flashing the device. I tried to flash CWM using fastboot as a first step, but i am failing.
Do i need to unlock or root the device first ?

I just managed to unlock my bootloader on kitkat WW11.8.4.23 using just the Asus UnLock.apk after I changed my GMail "less secure app settings" without any difficulties!
Then I easily flashed CWM using fastboot. I'm going to flash your rom as soon as I download it. Thanks.

I just downloaded the UnLock.apk here: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/Mobile_Phone/PadFone2/UnLock.zip
What I did was simply as follows:
1. Installed UnLock.apk and ran it.
2. Accepted warnings.
3. Inserted my gmail password (it automatically identified my account).
4. It failed with the "not valid password message.
5. In my gmail inbox, I got a message that gmail had blocked access from "less secure app", of course UnLock.apk!
6. I followed a link in the gmail message and changed the settings so that "less secure apps" could access my account.
7. I repeated steps 2 and 3 again, this time my phone restarted quickly, on the bootloader, I got a message that bootloader was "Unlocked".
8. then I downloaded the CWM you provided and flashed it (fastboot flash recovery cwm.img) in CMD.

Well, I get E-mail notifications and I still own a PadFone 2 - so I guess the answer is yes. Whether I can help you remains to be seen
great, perhaps you can help me further.
It is only indirect related to this tread. My Padfone 2 was soft-bricked, I found this tread, followed the instructions, the ROM starts up well but if I restart it the same old thing. It stops at the boot logo and stays there.
using CWM I can see that every time after a restart, in recovery, /data, /sdcard, /system, /persist and /tombstone are not mounted.
Perhaps this is normal when in discovery, anyway, I can mount all the items except /sdcard.
In CWM I can also see warnings:
E: can't open /cache/recovery/log
what could be going wrong?

I think this could be beyond me, but I can give you a few pointers. If you are planning to flash "my" Kernel and ROM:
- Make sure every file is from the links I provided
- Start the whole flashing thing all over again from the first step
- After CWM is installed, try to format EVERY partition you can find
- If your phone is not unlocked and the motherboard has been serviced, all sorts of things could go wrong
- Note that the ROM is based on the WW firmware, make sure your phone is the same
- Do not use Linux live sessions for flashing - use a full instalation
That's about it. I really can't think of anything clever to add - I hope it helps you somewhat.
thanks for the info Tari01.
the first 3 points were done as per instructions. I formatted all partitions twice on two separate occasions.
As far as I know the phone is unlocked but I didn't use the unlock app after I tried to flash your ROM, or any other ROM for that matter.
But once unlocked it stays unlocked isn't it? I mean, I can flash any recovery.
The second last point: I'm aware of this. I always choose WWE based roms.
your last point: I don't know anything about Linux command lines etc. As a matter of fact, when I use ADB or fastboot I just go through the motions as per instructions but I hardly know what I'm doing.
On the bright side; I'm most likely not the only one.
I will use this phone solely as a learning devices for better understanding of the Android platform and ADB etc.,...
@tari01 - greetings and thanks for a wonderful custom ROM - I have just flashed it and it seems very stable for now.
Two questions though - did you remove the Audio Wizard from the stock ASUS ROM? Don't know 'bout you, but I think the sound was more "vibrant" when docked into the tablet when using a Stock ROM (but the stock rom was more unstable, I have NO IDEA why - gapps/android.system/everything kept crashing after a few hours).
Second, is your custom ROM compatible with Stone Kernel? I would like to try it out (OC version, because, overclock, why not? )
Thanks in advance for a cool ROM, and I shall await your reply.

I removed the Audio Wizard because I saw it as unnecessary bloatware. I doubt it would make any difference, since it only changed audio profiles. I use Rocket Player for music and BS and MX Player for video: all these can be tuned to sound as you like.

I am not sure what would happen if you used an older kernel. In the one that I've built , the CPU governor is not set in stone: If you want to use another one, there are many apps in the Play Store that will allow you to change it, and you can also set the desired frequencies. Note, that of all the CPU governors the one that I set proved to be the most efficient - it runs on a single core when you don't need CPU power, then, as applications request more power, it activates the entire CPU and delivers as much as it can - all this saves a lot of battery power. Overclocking will definitely drain your battery much faster, and I'm not sure you'd get noticeable performance.
@tari01 - thank you for the quick reply and the info provided. I am replying because, as I said, I encountered problems when using stock 4.4.2 - it seems your ROM is not exempt from those problems.
To be more specific, everything on my home screen disappears completely, only the live wallpaper remains, then when I try to open any app from the apps menu, com.google.process.gapps and android.process.acore keep crashing (Unfortunately, xxx has stopped message).
This happens after the phone/tablet is in idle for a few hours (as far as I could test it). I tried wiping cache, etc, but to no avail.
Android 4.1.1 does not have this issue, but the phone/tablet moves like an earthworm compared to 4.4.2 and support is limited.
Any ideas/pointers? I flashed your ROM over a stock 4.4.2 using the images you provided, and using the instructions you provided.
Thank you in advance!

Well, I'm afraid this seems to be out of my league. I'm still using my PF2 (in fact, it's my only phone/tablet), but I have no issues with it. Perhaps the only thing worth mentioning is that I don't use live wallpapers, I let my apps regularly update via Wi-Fi, and that I have a hacked Play Store. The rest is pretty much the same as you'd find it after flashing the ROM. I really have no idea what could be causing the errors you get
