Trouble with touch screen - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Galaxy Note GT-N8020 seems to be insensitive to finger touches. The S Pen works as normal but finger touches on the screen hardly work at all. It's still under warranty but rooted. Apart from the rooting, I've made no changes to the stock ROM.
Can anyone suggest what's wrong? I've changed no setings that could account for this.
Trevor

Try a factory reset.
As it has root its not under warranty .
You will need to remove root and all root counters first

hey man im having the same issue. didn't even think to check the s pen. did you ever resolve this issue? if so how?

Yes, fixed now.
Not long after this started happening, I noticed some fungus or crap on the inside of the display so I took it to the Samsung service centre. They replaced the entire display panel - basically the whole front half of the tablet - free of charge, reinstalled the stock software load out and gave it back still rooted.
As for the touch screen problem, I'm not sure if this was an actual fault (it seemed so at the time and was still happening after several re-boots) or something I was doing wrong. Anyway, the tablet looks and works good as new now. Can't fault Samsung service.

if you are under stock rom(original samsung & all further updates over kies) and u have done nothing unnormally so far i would recommend use the warranty too; )

I had the same issue. I got my touch panel replaced by the Samsung guys. That's why I was asking whether your phone is under warranty or not.

Here we go, this proves this has nothing to with CM9, this guy is on stock.
Many people are blaming CM9 for this and claiming it caused the problem.
It's a hardware defect.

Agree. :good:
I'll wait for a few weeks or till the phone is usable for the kernel 3.0. :fingers-crossed:
If not then no other option but create a Rs.5000 hole in my pocket. :crying:
Same case with me... Bought the i9003 March 2011.
I'm on DDKP3 and around the same time as the OP, my touchscreen started to act strange... responsive only when charger is plugged in. Tried factory reset, but problem came back after some hours!
If this is a product-wide issue, then I guess sammy should replace it for free, even if it's out of warranty... too busy to go to the nearest service cenrter, will check later.
Till then, please keep me updated how it goes for you.
---------- Post added at 02:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:24 PM ----------
Just wondering, if a reflash of DDKP3 via ODIN or any custom ROM would solve the issue... please suggest.
I guess the sensitivity settings (or something like that) has changed without you knowing. Don't know if it is the same as s2 but in s2, sensitivity of the phone not plugged in the charger and plugged in has different settings. So maybe the settings for it in your case (unplugged) has changed but not on the plugged in settings. It's all in the kernel btw.

Maybe asking a kernel dev if the values changed or what not. If i'm correct then it's a software problem, if not then maybe a hardware problem.

Same problem!!!
It happened last week when my phone surprisingly started showing this problem. After unlocking the phone the screen becomes unresponsive. In my case it is just 1-2 secs after unlocking the phone.
It lasted for a day, I tried flashing different ROMs. I was on XXKPE when it happened. And than suddenly my phone started working fine until yesterday when this thing again happened and the problem still persists (I am still on KPE). I dont know what to do.
I think it can be some software problem as the screen and touch keys do work for some time before becoming unresponsive and even the logcat shows no problems for the touch screen. I am going to try more ROMs now. Will keep you posted.
Possible solution !!!
Friends, I think I found a possible solution for this issue. Though it seems to work for me... I have to keep the phone under observation for some days until I can say it's the final solution.
A similar thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695149
The possible cause for the touch screen going unresponsive seems not to be a hardware/software glitch; but environmental issue! And it doesn't depend on the ROM your'e running.
I noticed that most people from India having this issue say that this problem started in June, when the rainy season starts and it gets humid and damp.
In fact my phone showed this issue when it had rained for the last 2 days and it was very damp and humid inside the house.
You can do the following:
1. Take out the back cover, memory card, SIM and battery.
2. Place the backside of the phone near a hot air source (on top of a running CRT TV/monitor, hairdryer, laptop fan vent) for sometime.
3. Reassemble and check if the problem has gone away.
Do not panic if the handset gets a bit hot in the process!
In my case, I left it on the top grille of a CRT TV for a day which ran for 8hrs.
Do let me know if this works for you...
Flashing the ROM does not solve the problem

Thanks to agnivo007.
I guess the climate is the only reason. I used his method to heat up my phone a little bit by charging it enough. Than it started working fine. No problems since then. Lets see.

Touch Screen non-responsive Problem
I had the same issue and when i dismantlement the thing, came across a small batter. could this be the reason? Cos while charging this battery is not used but when running with battery, this small dry typed batter can be in use.
Found Any Solution
Could any 1 find a solution for this matter?
If so pls. update. Mine is still there.
I can't get rid of it.

Swipe to Unlock not working

Unrooted, Stock.
Everytime I try to unlock, it sits there and looks at me like I am stupid. The only way I can unlock is to restart the device and then only on first time will it unlock. I have tried wiping cache, and a factory reset in the stock recovery, any ideas?

sounds like your touchscreen is failing. Mine would do this too. It would work after restart until the screen timed out or it was locked. After that the touchscreen would no longer function. I returned mine for a new one.
That is what I was afraid of. Just had Amazon send me a new one.
This is a new feature they put in so that they don't infringe on Apple's innovative patent

Sorry to hear. Mind if I ask how long ago you got it from Amazon?
I ordered it on launch day. Got it the Friday after that.
Unlock
You did not say if it's not unlocking with the stylus , or finger .
I had some trouble with stylus but it went away for no reason , but this is what I discovered :
At some point my screen was not responding regardless if I just rebooted it or if I used rubberized stylus , finger or original pen .
Then when it came back on , I changed settings in " PEN " for pen sensor to be disabled . Well the sensor is NOT disabled , but when I pull the pen out my screen does not work . I put the pen back and it works . If the sensor is enabled , when I pull the pen out screen does not respond even when I put the pen back . I have to reboot it . So I was gonna take it back to worstbuy ( bestbuy ) and exchange , but I see that other peeps have same problem so I decided to keep it and start updating and installing apps on it . Next day I forgot that pen does not work and I pulled it out , screen comes on , I swipe pen and start doing this and that and I realized that pen works . Somebody on samsung or xda will figure it out and fix it .
No it is not responding to pen or finger input.

I had the same exact issue with my tablet! IT just stopped responding unless you would restart it but as soon as it went to sleep it would be unresponsive once again. I had mine replaced by Best Buy. I hope this doesn't turn out to be a common issue and 2-3 months from now I'm dealing with this and RMA issues.
I had the issue right after the update. I think that is the cause. I exchanged mine at Best Buy. I made sure to not update again. Not long after Samsung pulled the update.
Now my S Pen is done. Thank God my replacement will be here today.

I hope you're right but my unit didn't start messing up until 3 days after I did the update. I did notice that when I got my replacement unit that there has not been an update so you are correct in that the update has been pulled by Samsung. I know I will feel much better in knowing that the problem with my first unit was software related rather than hardware related!

[Q] Screen not working but touchscreen still responding

Hello everyone!
I have been visiting the site for a long time but this is the first time I actually post.
Well the problem I have with my nexus is that the screen stopped working a few days ago, but the touchscreen is still responding. I was walking at the beach with the phone in my pocket and after some time I realized the phone was not working. I suppose it was the humidity because the phone was completely dry.
Now the weird thing is that the touchscreen works perfectly, I can feel it when I unblock the phone, but the screen is completely black. Anyone has any idea how to fix this? I already changed the screen of my old nexus 4 a few times, but is there any other option? because I do not want to pay for the whole screen replacement when the touchscreen is working. I would say that it is just some contacts not working properly, but I do not really know how to fix that.
I hope someone has an idea how to fix it.
Thank you!
Maybe this thread will point in the right direction. Mentioned is flashing stock recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2574354
Thanks for the reply! I tried that but it did not work and after the battery run out I realized it was not charging either. So I think the only thing left is to send it to repair to LG or something...

Messed-Up Display

Hello XDA,
My Nexus 5 running CM12 5.0.2 nightly will not respond to the touches anymore infact when I press the power button to activate the display it acts as if someone is touching it randomly messing all the apps that are running and opening and closing many other things.
Furthermore it displays weird and burned lines throughout the screen. It was not dropped, no water went inside the device or anything. If it helps I did install the OTA updates that CM gives us.
I have also attached pictures so you may get a better understanding of my problem.
Thanks in advance.

Hmm I see. Well since a month HAS passed, its definetly not the rom thats causing the problem, i don't know if anything regarding the software could even be causing the problem. Its 100% hardware and by that i mean the screen, you should change it, the touch and also the display are messed up.

I hate to be the bringer of bad news - but your screen is toast. Fortunately you can replace the touch and display components all at once.
http://www.amazon.com/Skiliwah-Digitizer-Assembly-Google-nexus5/dp/B00HN0U168
Here is what you need to perform the repairs - and here are the procedures for disassembly.
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Disassembling+Nexus+5+Display+Teardown+-+liquid+damage/32410
Trust me, it's not that difficult. Unfortunately, it's a bit pricey ($60 for the screen and digitizer), nevertheless much cheaper than a new device or sending your device in for repairs.
Rma
Problem Solved
The screen isn't toast, neither is the digitizer. I have 2 of these phones. The parts which cause problems like this are the main board and the ribbon with the USB connector on it, which also attaches the screen & digitizer to the main board. One was showing lines exactly like this, & also no touch. I put a replacement main board in. Works great now. The other, wouldn't even turn on. I put the main board from the first phone in the second one, it still wouldn't turn on. I replaced the ribbon cable, it turns on and perfectly replicates the issue from the first phone. So now, I have one fully functioning LG Nexus 5, and another which turns on with the same problem as yours. This is good, I started out with 2 of them that were useless to me. So, it appears that your display and touch issues are caused solely by a bad main board. A replacement main board costs somewhere around $75. After swapping stuff around, I have 2 bad main boards, 1 bad USB ribbon & 1 working phone of 2. Not bad, not bad at all.

Marshmallow Phantom Touches

Has anyone else here experienced this? I found a few people on the subreddit about Moto G so I am not the only one, but I wonder how many people it affects. I updated my phone to marshmallow and the next day the problem began - I can't normally scroll facebook or any other tab without opening random links and tabs. It's like the phone is registering touches when I am scrolling. It is really annoying after the 20th photo you accidentally liked. Or when checking out the settings you click on every single tab when trying to scroll down. I did a factory reset but it was normal for maybe less than a day (I might have not noticed since I was busy that day and didn't use the phone as much).
Do I wait for next update? It could be months and this is unbearable.
same problem after update, really annoing
Same issue here. It's driving me nuts. I contacted Motorola by email and they told me to factory reset or send it in for a hardware repair! It's obviously a software issue.

Same... removing my tempered glass screen protector was the solution, and then I put one back on that was thinner than my original one and the problem returned but with much less severity. It is livable now, but still annoying once in a while.
