i created this list for myself and felt like sharing some info that might help others since my phone seems to be working OK. this is mainly a consolidation of instructions from the youtube site listed at the bottom of this post. if you're feeling generous then consider donating to qbking77, the person responsible for the youtube instructions and download'ables. thanks to everyone that contributed to this.

•0) If your Epic is rooted then create a backup
•1) Open odin 1.85, select pda, select SPH-D700-EB13-8Gb-REL.tar.md5, enter download with phone (hold 1 and power button), uncheck all but auto-reboot, select start
•2) Setup wi-fi, manually update to latest & greatest Android OS (menu, settings, about phone, updates, update android). Obviously, you'll have to reset your phone in between each update.
•3) Open odin 1.85, select pda, select kernel-GB-3a.tar.md5, enter download mode on phone (hold 1 and power button), uncheck all but auto-reboot, select start
•4) Open odin 1.85, select pda, select ACSRecovery5-1.0.0.0-epic4g.tar.md5, enter download mode on phone, uncheck all but auto-reboot, select start
•5) Turn on USB debugging, connect Epic to USB, turn on mass storage
•6) Place Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip and GPS_FIX.zip onto sdcard
•7) Note: this is a good place to create a backup so that you have a pre-rooted version of Android EL30 to restore to when future updates are released.
•8) Enter clockwork with phone (hold low volume, camera, and power button), install zip from sdcard, Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip, reboot system
•9) Enter clockwork with phone, install zip from sdcard, GPS_FIX.zip
•10) thanks to dshoem01 on sprint.com community for this... I'd suggest the EC05 TAR, to save an update step, and using CWM, rather than ACSRecovery, simply because it's standard. Other recoveries are optional. I'd also omit the GPS fix, as some users find they don't need it.
And I have to agree with the above, though this is much more reasonable to be in the dev section than most that get strewn here.

I agree with you on all stated above. Perhaps, OP, create an "optional" section providing instructions for things not necessarily considered standard.
While I do agree that this is borderline belonging in General, I am pleased to see someone eager and willing to help out other users by taking the time to create something as detailed as this thread. The section on things that can be removed is very thorough and I feel that it could help users who want a stock ROM, but still want to enable some better-than-stock functionality.
I say continue doing what you're doing, but do keep in mind that the Epic community is quite, how do you say it, developed. Lots of seasoned users here who have been around for a long while, but definitely still beginners who need a helping hand.

so this post should go in general forum instead of development forum?
i suggested acsrecovery because that is what the youtube video / download instructed and it worked for me. personally, i don't see much difference between acsrecovery and cwm.
i agree, ec05 would save a reboot...but c'mon ;-)
i'm curious why the gps fix is only applicable to certain circumstances...weird. anyone complain that installing the gps fix negatively impacted their phone? from what i understand, it can only positively impact the gps performance.
yes, i prefer stock over roms; however, i greatly appreciate the ability to root so that i can make minor tweaks here and there (especially to remove sprint's power on video & melody!). if only there was a way to un-root, install an update, and re-root!! until then, my method of reverting to a backup with the most recent update (pre-rooted, minus tweaks of course), installing the new update, and then re-rooting won't take very long.
THIS METHOD:
- ONLY WORKED FOR ICS (Android 4.0.x)
- IT WILL NOT WORK FOR THE SGS3 RUNNING JELLY BEAN (Android 4.1.x)
But I hate it when threads say that ^ or worse...
they don't get updated and you read it and/or try it for NOTHING!
So here you go...

Step by step guide to Root your phone, Unlock the bootloader, and then install ClockWorkMod Recovery. Also some unnecessary mods at the bottom if you're interested. I know there is another really well written guide for rooting the SGS3 and other mods but I wanted to post this and hope to get it sticky'd for the beginners

GETTING ROOTED:
Navigate to https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1aksh2bikfsne43/wmpWRj7Und
Download:
- Verizon_Wireless... (USB Drivers for SGS3)
- Root Debug FS.7z... (7zip (freeware) file used to one-click root)
Credit to Noxous Ninjas as he created this program. It's the best I've found to easily root my S3 without feeling the need to baby sit the phone during rooting.
Thanks Droidstyle for reminding me about the credits Noxous Ninjas deserves!
Install (Computer):
- USB drivers
- Unzip Root Debug tool to a folder of your choice
Enable USB Debugging and Unknown Sources (Phone):
- Settings -> Developer Options -> Tick USB debugging
- Settings -> Security -> Tick Unknown source
Plug in phone to computer using OEM USB cable:
- Allow the drivers to complete (the little balloon pop-up in the right hand corner will say "Device ready/installed" -something to that effect)
MUST BE RAN AS ADMINISTRATOR
Navigate to your extracted Root Debug FS folder (Computer):
- Double-click "RootDebugfs"
- Choose option 1 (press 1 and then enter)
- Read the disclaimer, IF YOU AGREE, press y, then enter
- USB drivers reminder appears, press any key to continue
- Unknown Sources/USB Debugging reminder appears, press any key to continue
- Yet another informational message appears (READ THIS ONE), then press any key to continue
- Root process starts -> WAIT UNTIL IT COMPLETES | DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR DEVICE
- Once complete you will need to open the Superuser app and click through the initial dialog to actually start the program/allow it to run in the background. -- Thanks Whyzor!
ON YOUR PHONE: Navigate to https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1aksh2bikfsne43/wmpWRj7Und
Download the following from the APKs folder:
- ez_unlock.apk (Also found on Google Play store, free)
- rom_manager.apk (Also found on Google Play store, free)
- Normally when downloading them right to your phone it will immediately prompt you to install them, choose install in both instances
- Open your app drawer and open EZ-Unlock
- Accept/Grant the app SuperUser permissions, select Unlock, you should hear "That was easy" and the word "Unlocked" should show in green at the top of the screen
BEFORE CONTINUING: it is recommended that you are connected to a stable WiFi network to ensure a successful flash!
- Open your app drawer again and open ROM Manager
- Select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
- Find and select "Samsung Galaxy S3 (Verizon)"
- You'll see the blue bar at the top indicating progress, when it nears the end you'll need to Accept/Grant the app SuperUser permissions
- You may receive a message that Touch recovery is available, install if you'd like (I have read some posts a week or two ago about Touch recovery not always working flawlessly though, just FYI)
***AT THIS POINT ROOTING, BOOTLOADER UNLOCKING, AND CWM RECOVERY ARE COMPLETED/INSTALLED***
RECOMMENDED! BUT OPTIONAL: MAKING A NANDROID BACKUP
- I would recommend having your preferred apps and home screens set up prior to making a recovery
- From the ROM Manager application select "Reboot into Recovery"
- FYI: Recovery mode can be entered manually as well, turn the phone off.
- While off, press AND HOLD Vol. Up, Home, Power
- Once you see the "Samsung" boot screen you can release (There will also be some blue text in the top left hand corner, this indicates recovery mode is booting)
- Recovery mode navigation: Vol. Up/Down moves the selection, Power selects it
- Select "backup and restore"
- Select "backup to external sdcard"
- Wait for it to finish (Usually takes about 5 minutes)
- Select back to get to the main menu
CONGRATS!
- If all that worked your phone is now rooted and (hopefully) a backup has been made after rooting. This way if you start tinkering and break something you can (hopefully) restore back to this recovery.
REMOVE PERSISTANT/ONGOING WIFI NOTIFICATION AND POPUP (REQUIRES ROOT)
ON PHONE: Navigate to Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.sqleditor
- Download: SQLite (Yes it's a paid app, support our Devs!)
- Open the app, Accept/Grant the app Superuser permissions
- Select Settings Storage
- Select settings.db
- Select system
- Long-press "wifi_offload_network_notify"
- Select "Edit Record"
- Change the value field to "0" (zero)
- Select Save
- Press back key
- Select "Secure"
- Long-press "wifi_networks_available_notification_on"
- Select "Edit Record"
- Change the value field to "0" (zero)
- Select Save
- Reboot your phone
UI MODS (Not necessary but are definitely improvements in the UI)
- Notification bar toggles mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1775235

--Above files are flashed using recovery
HOW TO: FLASH A .ZIP USING RECOVERY (REQUIRES ROOT & UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER)
**ONLY FLASH A ZIP UPDATE THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR MODEL AND OS**
- Know where you downloaded the file to (Preferrably external SD card)
- Reboot into recovery
- Choose "install zip from sdcard"
- Choose "install zip from (external) sdcard" -or wherever you saved it
- Choose the desired file you want to flash
- Scroll up (it's quicker) to select "Yes - ..."
- The file(s) will flash (progress at bottom), once it's done you can flash another or go back to the main menu and reboot!
Great write up. This should be sticked instead of the tutorials that are already there.
I'm having trouble getting rid of the persistent wifi notification, i have successfully achieve root, and flashed cwm. I go to edit record and the value is already a "0". any idea whats up here? i flashed one of those ui customizations you linked too if that matters.

HELP!!!!
Followed this to a "T". Everything went smoothly and appeared successful until I flashed a rom. I flashed Jellybean CM10 for VZW. Now all I get is a screen that says "System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest Verizon Wireless store for help.".
I tried booting into recovery manually so I could do restore my backup, but i can't even get back into it. It just keeps taking me to this screen.
Followed the guide to return to stock using odin and repeated all of these steps.... i'm back in business now.... phew!!!!
This is Noxous Ninjas root Tool! its pretty obvious when it says "Noxious Ninja" at the top of the program. Download both versions and compare them.

This guide is the best I've read yet!
I've been casually reading these forums for over two years and still haven't decided to lose my rooting virginity, probably because every guide always seems so damn confusing. This looks nice and simple.
3 questions:
1- If I'm not going to be putting on a custom ROM yet, do I need to continue and install CWM right away? Can I just wait and do it when I finally take the next step? (I really just want to root to get rid of some bloat for right now. I know I'll last a day though where I start wanting to use mods and tweaks though, will I need to install CWM for that?)
2- Can I just ODIN back to stock instead of bothering with a Nandroid backup? I keep nothing on my phone that I feel is of importance for backing up. Everythings in the cloud.
3- When I go to flash my first ROM, does it need to be on the internal SD or on the external SD card (I have a jillion laying around, but they are only 2GB a piece)?
Thanks!

Even if you don't flash a custom ROM or custom .zip update a backup is nice to have in case you make one little tweak that breaks something. Eliminates the hassle of having to flash back to stock and start from scratch again.

You sure can. Keep in mind ODIN flashing does have a higher risk than a Nandroid backup. You simply cannot perma-brick your phone if there is no cable plugged into it.

Having either a full ROM or a .zip update ROM flash on the external SD is the best scenario. Part of a nice clean install is to make sure a factory reset was done (which wipes the internal SD). If your ROM is on the internal SD... well you know the rest lol
Thanks! Just want to make sure folks are properly credited for thier work...and again nice guide!

Successful in Rooting Energy
Hi!! Don't worry. I already rooted my Energy. And I used Root And Restore by Bin4ry.
Just use the software First. Run the "'RunMe.bat" and then make sure that:
1. You're device is connected to the PC.
2. You turned on "USB connection"
After clicking on the RunMe.bat, a command prompt window will open. Then you'll see there the choices on what kind of action you'll need to perform.
- press 1 then enter (because your device is a normal device)
- a couple of things will appear on the window like daemon started successfully etc.
-then it will tell you to go to your device and press "restore my data" (or just restore)
-then your device will restart. Don't worry if it restarts a couple of times. It's okay.
-then after the boot, you'll be welcomed with a dialogue indicating that "Android is upgrading".
Enter your homescreen and voila!!! you are rooted :victory:
Then manually install the latest version of BusyBox in the market. As well as SuperSU (The android logo with the red cape) :highfive:
I'll expect that you'll be rooted in no time

For the past few Months I saw quite a few posts from people asking how to root this phone and no one could root it until now.
The root procedure is easy enough for anyone really
You will need:
Your VF-696
King root(latest version)
A brain
Common sense
5 main spare time
And a working internet connection
You know the drill,I am not responsible for any dammage that you do to your device, there is always a risk when rooting phones, this process should not brick or harm your device,if it does you did not follow the instructions correctly.
First enable usb debbuging. If you did not already do it or you just don't know how to enable it follow this
1.go to your settins menu scroll down to "about phone" and tap on it
2.Once in scroll down to "build number"( your build number should be " LMY47I release-keys") tap on it seven times a pop up should come up and say "now you are a developer".
3.Go back to setting menu and scroll down to your new developer options tab tap on it once in it look for "usb debbuging" when you find it tap on it
USB debbuging should now be turned on.
Simple right now its time to root.
Install king root onto your phone.(You can download it from playstore.don't confuse kingo root with kingroot, kingroot is the one you need to download)
Right, now you can open king root.
It will scan your device info and stuff
If you have internet it will go to the screen where is says "root strategy available"
Click "try root"
It will be slow for the first few percentages when it gets to about 35% after that it will go quite fast until its done.
If root successful reboot you phone and you are done.
You have successfully rooted your device.
READ!!!!!!
I warn you before trying anything that could brick your device get yourself a custom recovery and backup your system I cannot stress enough how important this is.
I'm currently working on a custom recovery I don't have much experience so it could take a while, and after I upload a custom recovery you guys and girls can expect a Custom ROM to be rolling out soon.
All credits go out to the developers of Kingroot.
Best of luck to you all

OK well for future reference always,....ALWAYS remove the google account from the phone before doing any kind of factory reset when you don't know the credentials.
Method 1 take it to a Samsung service shop with proof of purchase / ownership and they will reset the device for you, (might want to do this before messing around with it).
Method 2 is to get TWRP onto the phone to wipe "user data" then reboot , once you get TWRP on your home and dry. Can flash with Odin and depending on how up to date the device firmware is will depend if it will work or not.
Method 3 is to use the use the OTG cable (which came with the phone) to plug in a USB drive with all manner of frp disabling .apk's on. Lots of guides on line for this.
Method 4. I know some of the videos on youtube look confusing but depending on how old your device firmware is some of them still work. Any guides from late 2018 onwards should be tried, don't bother with any guides older than September 2018
Method 5. Is the nuclear option of "nand erase all" in Odin only use this if you are desperate as it's likely to corrupt the efs partition
It's very difficult to give specific advice without knowing the exact state of the phone, firmware update, security patch etc.
FRP lock is an absolute bast**d to resolve. I hope this helps.
Update
Apparently this method works on an S7

OK well for future reference always,....ALWAYS remove the google account from the phone before doing any kind of factory reset when you don't know the credentials.
Method 1 take it to a Samsung service shop with proof of purchase / ownership and they will reset the device for you, (might want to do this before messing around with it).

How are you suppose to get into the device and remove the google account when you don't have the device password? Most if not all of those options require USB debugging be enabled no? Which i can't / wasn't able to do without pwd. We don't have samsung service shops around here.
Is there no way to load from usb drive

None of the methods i've listed require you to have password access to the device. I'm assuming from what you've written in your first post, you can turn the device on but are stuck at the Google verification screen? AKA, FRP lock
No you do not necessarily need USB debugging turned on
The OTG cable IS connected to a USB drive if you use that method
I mean this in the nicest possible way but do you have a basic understanding of the steps required to modify this phone?

i don't believe any of those methods work on s7 on android 8. No file manager pop, no google assist on keyboard, sidesync doesn't pop either. I believe the latest that tutorial works on reliably is 6.1 i may be wrong however.

managed to bypass frp on my verizon s7 G930VVRU8CRJ3. I will try and list the steps so you can test it for yourself
From the start screen hold vol up and vol down simultaneously to start talkback
Draw a L to open global context menu.
Select talkback settings
Long press vol up and down together to turn off talkback
Select text to speech setting
Select the gear next to preferred engine
Select install voice data
Select the download arrow next to any language
Select the grey oval that says tools under the title of whatever language you chose
(You may have to update the galaxy store)
Select the magnifying glass and search for "internet"
Download samsung internet browser then open by pressing the triangle that appears in the same spot the download button was
Type frptools.com
Click on the second link that says All Frp Bypass Apk Download - frptools.com
Download FRPTools_8.1.apk install and open
Click on open google login. It will say you need google account manager then automatically down load it. Install that then it will take you back in to the frptools apk.
Click open google login again
Click on the three dots in the top right and choose browser sign in
Input your google account and password
Download apex launcher from frp tools apk and install.
Pull down notification shade and select settings gear
Select general management setting
Select reset
Select factory data reset. You should see your email account on this screen
Select reset.
Once it reboots you should be able breeze through setup wizard with your credentials.
Good luck! Please let me know if this works for you

Thanks for response,
When i holde volume up and down it doesn't do anything from start screen. On my device voice assistance is turned on by holding 2 fingers on the screen until it beeps. Then a tutorial comes up. swiping L shape does nothing.
Simple go to ebay search for samsung galaxy Google lock removal service and have one of them remove it for you. I have done this many times and it dose not cost that much.
