[Q] Running a beta group - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys, this is quite a wide question so I'm looking for a lot of opinions and strategies here.
An app I made is really starting to take off, and a couple of users have started offering to beta test for me. In the past I've just developed by myself and got some input from friends and family, but I'm thinking now that a more formalized beta process will benefit me, if only to get the feel of it for future projects.
So I've come to ask you guys about your experiences with running these kind of things. How useful are they? What tools were you using to organize reports and information? How did you go about selecting participants? How often should I be pushing new beta updates to the users?
Also useful would be opinions from people who were testers in a groupl. What made you want to test for that app? Was there anything the developers did that annoyed you?
Like I said, this is quite a wide topic, and I'm not even really sure what exactly I'm looking for here, so just posting whatever experience you have with these things would help me a lot

Development Coming Soon? (AndroidSpin Posted My Article, Skilled Dev Willing to help)

I've been trying my hardest contacting many people to get development started with this phone. Since not many Experienced Devs would be looking the way of this phone i've been trying to reach out.
I Contacted AndroidSpin as well and they are very well known android news site (which i check everyday) and managed to get an article out about helping with development with our phone (awsome, thanks AndroidSpin!) See the Article Here
Hopefully in the Near future we will have a working recovery and ROMs/Mods/Themes Rolling out. A Very experienced Dev has Contacted me Back Saying he is Willing to Help but nothing is promised as he doesnt have a Sidekick 4G at hand. But he is willing to make a working recovery for us so lets see what happens .
He will Definitely need testers.. i will be one ofcourse hope others are interested in seeing development stir up over here aswell !
nice to hear about.....i have been checked this 4rum everyday to looking for a news but still......hopefully something will come out soon....:x im willing to be the tester for this as well.....
I just want to say thank you to all of you working on this. As a former Hiptop user and open-source enthusiast, I took issue with the closed platform that Danger had installed on it and ended up ditching it. When I heard the new Sidekicks would be running Android I jumped at the chance to have one, only to find out that development was lacking interest due to the stigma of the old Hiptops as phones for teenagers. It's wonderful to see more people getting interested in this and I hope to help as much as I can in the future. Thank everyone again and happy hacking to you all!
willing to help
I'm very interested in getting development going for this phone as well, I don't have the time or the skill set to cook roms myself but I am more than willing to test and give feedback. I know a lot of devs aren't interested since they spent last year with the galaxy s line of phones and there are new dual cores to play with, but I think this phone is really unique and could definitely have a big following because of the fact that it is soo different than the sea of slabs out there. I hope development picks up, there are plenty of custom roms out there already built for the galaxy s line that would only need to be tweaked to work with this device so hopefully that picks up soon.
I'm very interested in helping with development, came from the G1 and had fun with that. I was trying to figure out how to compile ClockworkMod but because Samsung uses initRamFS rather than a regular makefile, I was unable to figure it out. I'm very open to testing and trying to help as best I can with developing on this phone, feel free to e-mail me if anyone has any need to test anything, I'm always checking my e-mail. sduvick AT gmail.com. For those who understand the compiling of clockworkmod, I would suggest working from the Vibrant version, as the buttons are all mapped right, we just need to add the storage driver so that the sdcard can be mounted.
I would love to be a tester please keep me posted.

+Thanks.
I'm still stock and would be willing to help some dev's

What books do you want?

Hi Everyone,
My names Martin and I work for Packt Publishing in the UK.
Im currently looking at a book on Android Rooting, ROMS, themeing etc.
I just wanted input from you on what should be included in the book as the only similar title on amazon has terrible reviews!
If you have any ideas on any other android titles you think would be useful let me know here.
We would also be looking for an author if this book gets through our commitment process as well as technical reviewers. They would most likely come from these forums.
Thanks,
M
This would be very difficult. The reason being, the android rooting and romming game is very fluid. What works one day, may not hold true the next due to software updates. Even rooting exploits are ever evolving. Then add the variance of many many different devices, all with thier own quirks and such. Just saying.
Thanks for the reply.
Understandably given the ever changing releases of android teh subject is a minefield.
I think it is definitely a market for such a book its just finding the right angle.
hmm bro its very dificult
How did you get into Roms, Themes etc???
What resources did you use?

Most of the folks mainly this forum. And google ofcourse.
Cause its device specific, in most cases. At least in terms of rooting.
For theming, flashing etc its mainly similar.
But I would say, stuff I've mentioned are the top of the iceberg.
Anyhow, good luck!

Calling all newer APP DEVS and any pros who want to contribute.

Good day, Im a pretty green dev still learning code but doing it mostly from scratch with no formal training of any kind. I've joined a couple other DEVS on G+ and here to combine what we know and try to speed up the process for all of us. If your new to the APP devving game or a pro who wants to help the rest of us trying to get there let me know.
Going to start a specific user made forum here http://forum.xda-developers.com/group.php?groupid=740 for the group and one on G+ as well. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Have a good day.

Project RomView

Hi @all,
I'm posting this on XDA because I think most flash-a-holics "live" here and I'm sure most (if not all) of you know the problem.
You want to buy a new phone and you are looking for ROMs, check if the bootloader is easily unlockable etc.
As of now you have to do multiple Google searches and go through about 5 forums until you have found the answer you want.
Or you already have your phone and are looking for a new ROM.
So you're browsing the XDA section for your device and find about a thousand threads with ROMs and eventually you take one of the big ROMs you've already known since your first flash (speaking of CyanogenMod, AOKP, MIUI and so on)
So wouldn't it be cool (and I think it would) if all was just on one site easily discoverable and you were presented just the information you need?
That's what I'm trying to achieve with Project RomView.
I hope it's understandable what I mean.
Because I know it's quite impossible to do it all alone I'm looking for people (<10) who like the idea and would be ready to contribute in any form.
And please only if you really want to!
I'm looking for people who can do one of those things:
- Do UI/UX design.
- Code an Android app
- Have good knowledge about web-development (i.e. PHP, JavaScript,...)
- Know how to work with databases (preferably MySQL)
- Cook ROMs themselves and can help telling what they need to have in such a platform, so that they would offer their ROMs on it.
- and maybe some more people for beta testing and so on.
Or if you just want to give your own two cents, feel free to tell me what you think.
I'm looking forward to hearing every opinion (as long as it is constructive. If you just want to tell me that I suck, you can keep it for yourself, thanks!).
Cheers,
land.apfel
PS: I'm not sure if I'm in the right section. If I'm not, please move the thread. Thanks.
PPS: I have already achieved some very early progress but I don't want to give out anything else as of now.
Reserved (just in case)
Also reserved (just in case the first case is not case enough )
If you want i can help with graphic
Thank you very much for offering your help, but unfortunately I think it's hopeless to do any efforts as long as there aren't any developers who're ready to offer their ROMs on RomView.

New here, want to help.

I am a long time leecher here at XDA-Developers, but I decided to create an account and see if I could help anybody with anything.
I am a long time programmer, however I didn't really have any Java experience until I get interested in Android a few years back. I am mainly a web developer, and so Java wasn't really anything that I was focused on learning.
What I can do for the XDA community.
Because I am a long time leecher here, I decided that until I actually have something to contribute to the actual Android community, I can contribute what I already have.
I have several servers currently online, so I can host your git/svn projects online in a secure area. Be it private or public. I can also host a website for you and your projects. Most of the time it will cost you nothing, except maybe a domain name if I am broke. (I don't make much at my day job).
I can also host your applications cloud backend, or your apps web interface. Whatever you need me to do. I am a pretty good sysadmin, and already have everything to do it.
I can't thank all of the devs here enough, especially the Galaxy S3 and Note 3 devs considering that they are the devices that I have had recently.
Let me know if you need anything.
Thank you,
Dan
I support you, you're good, I do phone in China, there are many good products in foreign countries want to do some marketing and sales, but a national and regional mobile phone users do not understand. If so, I hope we can have a lot of cooperation. If you are interested you can contact friends

We thank you joining. Also, offering to host files will help a lot of developers on this site.
You say that you're a common user of XDA. What are your other experiences with Android? Rooting? Any ROM experience?
--
I have rooted every device I have owned since my first Android device which was the Motorola droid X using guides from this site. Flashed countless roms to my different devices all downloaded from here.
I am going to start trying to take some roms apart and seeing what I can do with them. Hopefully I can patch a bug or two for some of you guys.
Try and spread the word that I can do what I can do, I don't want to come off as a spammer or anything so I am just going to leave it at this. you can link to this thread, and I will probably put it in my signature.
Thanks for your interest. If you know of any good guides for a beginner rom developer or kernel hacker I would love to read them.

Welcome to XDA! i myself used to be a lurker for XDA, its very generous of you to help others with hosting websites, im sure you will get lots of people accepting your offer. its not very hard to develop apps kernels or custom roms, should only require patience and time (and maybe a little bit more ram, the more ram you have the faster you can build a rom ) hope to see you on the battlefield! enjoy your stay at new vegas!
Welcome
Welcome to XDA! Am also follower of this site... Now registered new bee
I am not a expert like you... Just within in very small limit of exploring
Thanks for the responses everyone. Glad to hear that I may actually be able to help a little until I get going.
Good to hear from all of you.

I have recently come into a couple of domains in a trade. The are androidery.com and myandroidreview.com.
I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in doing anything with these domains.
Possibly a popular developer or developers that need a place to host their roms and source control servers. Whatever it may be, let me know.
If you have other ideas for websites you can post here or PM me and I will try to help you out.
Thanks,
Daniel

OLD newbie..
I too, myself, have been leeching here since I joined XDA a few months back, and still in the process of learning android development.
I'm more in to embedded systems' programming and development, but lately android interests me, and just now decided to get active.
:victory: Welcome to XDA mates!
Welcome. I am new as well
Hello! I'm still new at here too! I hope i can make some contribution in XDA
