What books do you want? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hi Everyone,
My names Martin and I work for Packt Publishing in the UK.
Im currently looking at a book on Android Rooting, ROMS, themeing etc.
I just wanted input from you on what should be included in the book as the only similar title on amazon has terrible reviews!
If you have any ideas on any other android titles you think would be useful let me know here.
We would also be looking for an author if this book gets through our commitment process as well as technical reviewers. They would most likely come from these forums.
Thanks,
M

This would be very difficult. The reason being, the android rooting and romming game is very fluid. What works one day, may not hold true the next due to software updates. Even rooting exploits are ever evolving. Then add the variance of many many different devices, all with thier own quirks and such. Just saying.

Thanks for the reply.
Understandably given the ever changing releases of android teh subject is a minefield.
I think it is definitely a market for such a book its just finding the right angle.

hmm bro its very dificult

How did you get into Roms, Themes etc???
What resources did you use?

Most of the folks mainly this forum. And google ofcourse.
Cause its device specific, in most cases. At least in terms of rooting.
For theming, flashing etc its mainly similar.
But I would say, stuff I've mentioned are the top of the iceberg.
Anyhow, good luck!

Question about ROMs

Hello all,
Just recently purchased an HTC Fuze with AT&T.
Being familiar with flashing firmwares and ROMs on several devices I understand that it IS a trial and error method of seeing which one you prefer or suits your needs best. However, I think I need more basic understanding of them to help me decide what I'm even looking at.
- What was the initial purpose for people developing ROMs? Just for aesthetic purposes, to change the look of the phone?
- What are the benefits to be gained in battery power and operation of TouchFlo?
- Again, I understand that everyone has different tastes and will therefore loike different ROMs but what differentiates them? Is one considered better built than others? More features, less glitches, crashing, etc?
- Clearly, it must be possible to somehow find a list of all apps that can be added and add just the things you want by yourself?
Finally, is there one good tutorial that explains EVERY step from beginning to end? As always with these kinds of things, there are lots of instructions lying around but most of them speak to people who already know all the jargon and terms. Or they refer to apps as though you know what they're talking about. "noob tutorial" doesn't mean anything if it's not easy to use for someone who's never applied a ROM.
Thanks a lot guys, being new here, I'd really appreciate any help you might offer.

[Q] Does anyone want a centralized ROM site?

I'm a software developer by profession, but I've been writing django backed websites for years now, and given some recent issues with my Captivate and some custom roms, I've been thinking about building a site for custom roms.
My thoughts basically boil down to this:
- Version tracking of roms is good
- Central place for files related to the rom is good (Boo MegaUpload!)
- Searching Roms by Device is hard (example: My friend has a backflip. XDA has no roms for it, AndroidForums has 4. Google should be a last resort, not your only option)
- Metadata is useful (base os version, base rom, etc.
- Comments and rating are useful.
I have a database layout almost done, and I see no reason this can't be for WinPhone 7, Android, Symbian, etc, etc. But before I go on, I wanted to know if people had an interest in this? I would want to have support for Rom Manager's update system, and anything equivalent for Phone7, etc.
I suppose, I should also mention I co-locate two servers already, and have 1TB of bandwidth a month on my 2TB server... so I should be good for a little while before running into issues...
Thoughs? Comments?

That would be absolutely amazing.
That's the kind of reaction I was hoping for.
I'll flesh out the backend some; see what comes of it. Not much of a graphic designer, but that'll come later.
-M
Definitely worth it. Nothing against this forum, but sometimes it can be tricky to find the ROMs you are looking for, scattered amongst the topics.

Which is why I think this guy has a great idea and should consider archiving live wallpapers, boot animations, etc anything for customizing devices.

Hadn't considered doing more than roms... might. (Most likely would just be a file upload with attached category... and then the ever popular search function.)
Depending on how work goes today, I might just start on this, and get the backend models written.

I think this is a great idea.
This is a great idea!
Definitely a cool idea, although if you'd planned on hosting the ROMs, that TB of bandwidth will run out pretty quickly.
been there , done that
http://www.techeye.net/software/htc-threatens-rom-site-with-legal-action
Plus the fact you'd be looking at a LOT more than 1TB per month if the site was even partially popular...
Great idea if possible.
It would definitely be amazing.
any ideas for the site name?

Why is software/rom development virtually non-existent for LG Fathom?

I have conducted many searches on anything pertaining to software or rom development for the LG Fathom, but find very little. One of the reasons I bought the phone was because of the OS and the possibilities of customization. It was something I enjoyed abut owning an HTC Excalibur and made me want to own another Windows Mobile phone. Is the phone too difficult to tailor to or is it just not popular enough? Being one of the later models to include 6.5.3 I'm surprised it doesn't have it's own sub-forum. I know there's an issue with app access to the accelerometer, for example. Is there no one willing to tackle this? This phone has so much potential it'd be a shame to see it go to waste.
Anyone....
probably because its not popular enough. if more people had this phone, then that would be a different story
Well, at least that's something. Thanks, dude.

Hi, my opinion is the same. People who works modifying roms, likes to work with popular devices.

I can understand that, but it's a shame to let its potential go to waste. I just found out I'll be getting an HD7 on the first, anyways.

[A510] Costom roms will there be any?

Hi all I just wanted to know if there will be any custom roms ? are there developers around ? because im thinking of getting the a510 or the asus tf300, but up to now the tf300 has custom roms already.
Sorry for my bad english
You're bringing up a good question, really, and my first thought is, yes.
But my second thought is rather a reminder and friendly meant plea, to any fellow Iconia Tab users onboard, to up the dedication and involvement in populating the threads, sharing tips and tweaks, information, app-tips, and whatnot's..
Cuz the more we actively show our own dedication to our devices in the forum, the more its likely for a skilled developer to show up and eyeball into our pit of tabs, and sight a large and steady enuff userbase to make it interesting to begin with.
One thing I do myself, is stealthly lurking around in cover of the dark and while most people is asleep, into the other devices specific parts of our forum, with a similar setup of our own Tegra3 platform, like the new Asus and Samsung tabs etc, and minutely sweep the walls and floors for stuff and leftovers, that I might be able to implement on my beloved 510
You never know whats good and nice, or smart-to-have, before you try. Some is ****, and simply doesnt work because of certain minor framework differences, but a fair bit of stuff actually do.
For instance, I've found great joy in the Asus SuperNote app, and found it to be fully enjoyable on our A510, and likely the A7* too. Even various device specific Live Wallpapers and widgets run fine, like the Asus weather widget, and so on.
Likewise, certain general tweaks for the ICS or Tegra3 is all but likely to play more or less nice in our tabs aswell.
What it does take thou, to make it even more interesting investing time in our own threads, is to share our findings, be it good or bad, silly or smart, and everything inbetween.
So lets populate the threads
The only general consesus to notice when posting our findings from other device threads, is to include a short informative description, and specificly, named credits to any users work you share. We must be friendly and smile while we nick thier stuff, right?
Sincerely,
Omnius
And ps.
Yes, its a long second answer to your question, but I believe its true.

In answer, yes, there will be custom roms. As a matter of fact, I have one almost ready for the a701.
The problem, is that currently, there is no working recovery for the 50x or the 70x. At least one that doesn't brick your tablet. This I am sure, will be fixed soon (as soon as some devs get their tablets back from repair )

This is a high-end tablet - I would be surprised if CyanogenMod doesn't eventually support it.

[Q] Would like some help making a new app

Hello all,
I am not really any kind of coder or developer myself. However, I am looking for someone who is -- maybe someone new to the game, to help me with an app I'd like to have on my phone (HTC Thunderbolt).
It's basically a time-card app, pretty simple. There are numerous of these out there, but I'd like to have one specifically geared towards my industry. There are already a couple that exist for the iPhone, but none that I can find for Android. Below are examples of what I'm talking about:
http://www.crewtimecard.com/
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wrap-time-time-card-for-film/id335510869?mt=8
I'd like to make a better one, and one for Android. Really, it would be just for my personal use, but I'm sure many others would be interested as well. Perhaps if someone out there is a developer as a hobby, looking for more practice, etc., this might suit that person. I'd love to talk about collaborating on such a project.
Thanks!
Not to be rude, but I'd be surprised if anyone bites on your offer. Developing and testing apps properly takes a significant amount of time and dedication, and the examples you gave indicate that the app you're looking for could be quite complicated. Unless you come across a developer that happens to need the same thing, or that you are willing to pay, you may be SOL.
Of course, this sounds like the perfect opportunity to learn how to program! There are plenty of great websites out there that will walk you through the entire process form scratch. Good Luck!

Not really.
These 2 site can help you from scratch.

Google has their own site to teach people.

Sounds like you might need to learn several languages to accomplish your goal. Not sure of one particular one to meet your goal.
