Is there any way that I can connect to a wifi network without disabling the data network ? And is it normal for this phones to be really hot when 4G is on ?

No and no. The OS will use wifi over cellular data. If you just want to use cell data turn off wifi. Your phone shouldn't be "hot" when using LTE. Try getting a CPU temp app from market and report back how "hot" it is.

I am curious about the reason behind such request. Why do you want to keep the two connections at same time?
What do you mean by "4G"? On LTE, my phone is fine, but on H/H+ it heats up slightly.

Not on the stock ROM. For some odd reason AT&T has removed that feature. CM7 has it.

I personally haven't tried it, but I think it does. Anyone want to confirm this?
Yes, android revolution had gsm/wcdma options.
You can try dialing *#*#4636#*#*
go to phone information you can choose what type of connection for the radio....let me know if it works for ya..
sent from my Inspire™ 4G via XDA App
[gsm only] for me it connects to Edge....
[gsm auto prl] gives me a more stable 3G connection full bars even though it says H+
[wcdma preferred] is supposed to give you the 4G speeds but its still flaky I only get 2-3 bars...depending on location if you're 4G covered..
My inspire is not rooted and im assuming this is the only way to change networks without root.

At least on the Captivate in DFW, GSM is still 3G. I could connect to 850MHz GSM only and still get 3Mbps down without issue. CM7 is the first time I have actually been able to switch to EDGE only since I had a stupid iPhone.
Yeah you can use just EDGE. Go to T-Mobile.
Why would someone want to do this?

Battery life, mainly. EDGE requires less power than 3G. I do it when I will be out for a while and I can still get my push Exchange email.

the best thing i do when i am going out for a while and know i need the battery to last longer is just turn off the mobile data connection. this is what drains android phones so quickly. this leaves the phone on 3g, but it is very efficient.
i'll unplug, go to the bar with mobile data off, and 5 hours later my phone is still at 95% battery. still on the 3g network too, just no data going.
its by far the best way to do it IMO. it turns any android phone into a "normal" phone battery again. and dont have to fiddle with network switching.

There are those of us who can't turn off mobile data. Part of my chosen job is the be on call 24/7. The way I usually get notified is by email. Therefore, mobile data is a necessity.

Is it possible to WiFi tether using the Sensation as a WiFi hotspot without rooting? (Since root has not yet been achieved.)
I have a Nook Color that I often use while tethered via my Nexus One, so to lose this functionality would definitely be a deal-breaker.
The Wifi hotspot functionality has been in android since 2.2 so it should work unless HTC have removed it for some reason. Doubt they have though.
I tried it several times, when turn on hot spot, the wi fi will turn off automatically.
I guess hot spot is for mobile internet, not for wi fi.

Many carriers remove it so they can force you into purchasing their tethering plans.

You turn on the mobile hotspot feature. The wifi turns off and the mobile data turns on. thats the hotspot setup.
then use your nook to search for wifi connection and connect to the sensation.

Yes, when you turn on WiFi hotspot, any Android phone will disconnect from WiFi, turn on 3G/4G data, and rebroadcast that data connection as a WiFi hotspot to other devices.
This is standard operation.
I'm just confused as to why he posted it. It doesn't answer the question of whether tethering works or not...? Seems like just a random post.
@everyday48, when you "tried it", did you try connecting another WiFi only device to the WiFi hotspot created by the Sensation?
Yes the sensation has wifi hotpot & tethering out of box.Cheers

Plus I don't believe they charge a tethering fee, so all the more reason for them to keep it in, as you'll end up using more data

They have it & I think they may start trying to enforce it. It's $14.99/month.

T-Mobile does charge for tethering via a WiFi hotspot feature as xnifex posted.
But so far it just seems random as to which phones they charge for and which they don't.
Has anyone seen a list of which T-Mobile android phones have tethering free and which you have to pay for?
BOOM
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/cell-phones/htc-sensation-4g.aspx?page=all
The Sensation can act as a mobile hotspot for up to five devices using the dedicated app. This feature costs $15 per month on top of your data plan.
Are they talking out of their ass or is this true?
Since people are starting to get their T-Mobile Sensations from Wal-Mart now, is tethering free or no?
I tried it out on mine and wasn't prompted to add the feature to my account. I guess I'll see what happens at the end of the month, lol
How to tell if being charged?
I have tested this and it works but I am not sure if I am being charged. If there is a charge I will just root and use the wireless tether app.
And now that T-Mobile Sensations are rolling out, is it free on those too?
The reason I ask is because upgrading through wireless.amazon.com and wirefly.com both list charges for tethering.
How the heck does that work if it's supposed to be free?
I'm about to install GTA 3 on my phone. It is a 400+ MB file and I am connected to Wifi.
Cellular data is also on, but I heard that the phone by default uses bandwidth from the Wireless network if both are turned on.
So before I download the files,I want to make sure that my phone isn't eating away precious cellular data.
Worst comes to worst, I can disable cellular data and just use WiFi, but I don't want to resort to that.
Tried searching the issue but couldn't think of keywords that returned viable hits. So I'm asking you smarties.
I use wifi at home and it never uses my mobiles data allowance.
If your very worried get a widget you can simply touch to switch data on or off but in my phone when on wifi it will not use up data allowance.
But be aware that IF you lost wifi reception then with data enabled it would so just check your wifi signals good first

ya np buddy
I can confirm my Wifi does NOT eat away at my mobile data.
I use Wifi all the time and have no issues
I would also check to see what your Wi-Fi sleep policy is set to.
Some phones default to the cellular data connection. I always used to cut my cellular connection off before switching to WiFi prior to my transition to unlimited data.
When I'm on wifi, I make sure the mobile connection is off.
usually if you are connected to wifi it will not use your data. Go ahead bro!
Ok can someone tell me does having both wifi AND mobile data/3G enabled at the same time cause more drain on the battery?
Or am I better off leaving only 1 enabled at a time.
Thanks.

yes u are correct..... you phone automatically gives priority to WiFi over mobile data....
if im not mistaken, with some phone u can change this.....
but the reason behind it is that wifi "should" give u higher connection speeds than that of mobile data so it give preference to it

Higher connection speeds and saves battery
Does the iPhone do such thing? (the turning off data while on Wifi)

thats a yes a no from observation.....
sometimes i have on both but it connects n give preference to the wifi.... but data is still on... its not using mobile data but there is some amount of battery drain....
if u manually turn off ur data however, u might seee a weeee bit improvement in the battery drain...
it jus depends on ur device and what u have running
with my atrix 4g..... with the current rom
i jus leave both on when using wifi but once im not using wifi... i turn it off..... battery drain it jus a tad bit more with both on but not significant....
so id say u cfan leave both enabled.... once out of wifi, switch it off cause its gonna take more battery power searching for wifi signals
The data stays on while WiFi is on but all data traffic if passed through Wifi (if connected) and the data stays on just to keep it "alive" so that when u turn off wifi, or lose wifi signal it can quickly switch to data practically without you noticing any lags. Battery drain is minimum by data if u are connected to wifi and data is on.
can you talk and surf on photon q without using wifi or 4g access like the sgs 3 i think its S-evdo that allows this
anyone that has this phone already confirm this ?
TIA
Don't know about this 'S-evdo' thing, but none of the CDMA/EvDO phones I've ever had were able to do this. I just tried it on my Photon Q and still no.
It probably works on LTE, but I can't test that since Sprint doesn't have LTE coverage where I live yet. WiFi still operates fine.
Hope that helps!
Whats weird is that i tried this on my photon the other night and it didnt work. Tonight, i was able to make a call AND pull up the internet while on 3G. Connected to Airave if it matters. During the call the 3G icon never left like it used to do on all my other phones.

Don't trust the icon. lol
Edit: Just called a 1-800 number to test this and ran a speedtest.... I can confirm that 3G does work while in-call; 500kbps which is impossible over 1xRTT.
Evo lte can do it
And it depends if the towers have been upgraded for jt
Wonder why this wasnt pushed as a feature. I got over 2 MBits doing this connected to my Airave. I have noticed a slightly longer delay in voice when using data at same time. Could just be my imagination i guess.
Does this really have something to do with the tower or more to do with extra radios in the phone itself?

Maybe because if you're connected to one of these Airave things, you're near an internet connection and could probably just use wifi. Doesn't really seem like a very appealing feature.

What? I dont believe the Airave is what makes the voice / data at the same time possible. I simply stated the speed I got to show how well the simultaneous services work under great conditions.
So then it is possible just as long as the tower your phone is connected to has been upgraded to allow this and this phone does support it???

I think it only has to do with the phone itself. More than one radio in it is the deciding factor. Actually, I have my phone set on CDMA/LTE mode, I wonder if i set it to CDMA only if this would still work.
