Tethering? - HTC Sensation

Is it possible to WiFi tether using the Sensation as a WiFi hotspot without rooting? (Since root has not yet been achieved.)
I have a Nook Color that I often use while tethered via my Nexus One, so to lose this functionality would definitely be a deal-breaker.

The Wifi hotspot functionality has been in android since 2.2 so it should work unless HTC have removed it for some reason. Doubt they have though.

I tried it several times, when turn on hot spot, the wi fi will turn off automatically.
I guess hot spot is for mobile internet, not for wi fi.

Many carriers remove it so they can force you into purchasing their tethering plans.

What?
What difference are you referring to between "mobile internet" and "WiFi"?

You turn on the mobile hotspot feature. The wifi turns off and the mobile data turns on. thats the hotspot setup.
then use your nook to search for wifi connection and connect to the sensation.

Yes, when you turn on WiFi hotspot, any Android phone will disconnect from WiFi, turn on 3G/4G data, and rebroadcast that data connection as a WiFi hotspot to other devices.
This is standard operation.
I'm just confused as to why he posted it. It doesn't answer the question of whether tethering works or not...? Seems like just a random post.
@everyday48, when you "tried it", did you try connecting another WiFi only device to the WiFi hotspot created by the Sensation?

Yes the sensation has wifi hotpot & tethering out of box.Cheers

Plus I don't believe they charge a tethering fee, so all the more reason for them to keep it in, as you'll end up using more data

They have it & I think they may start trying to enforce it. It's $14.99/month.

T-Mobile does charge for tethering via a WiFi hotspot feature as xnifex posted.
But so far it just seems random as to which phones they charge for and which they don't.
Has anyone seen a list of which T-Mobile android phones have tethering free and which you have to pay for?

BOOM
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/cell-phones/htc-sensation-4g.aspx?page=all
The Sensation can act as a mobile hotspot for up to five devices using the dedicated app. This feature costs $15 per month on top of your data plan.
Are they talking out of their ass or is this true?

Since people are starting to get their T-Mobile Sensations from Wal-Mart now, is tethering free or no?

I tried it out on mine and wasn't prompted to add the feature to my account. I guess I'll see what happens at the end of the month, lol

How to tell if being charged?
I have tested this and it works but I am not sure if I am being charged. If there is a charge I will just root and use the wireless tether app.

And now that T-Mobile Sensations are rolling out, is it free on those too?
The reason I ask is because upgrading through wireless.amazon.com and wirefly.com both list charges for tethering.
How the heck does that work if it's supposed to be free?

[Q] Needing wireless tether to work for NS4G stock rooted

I am running a stock rooted NS4G and I am not able to get wireless tether to work on my phone. I have tried Wireless Tether and I can see the network on my computer but when I try to connect its a no go (my computer just keeps connecting but never connects). I also tried Barnacle Tether but I get the same issue. I really don't-won't want to change my kernel to get this feature does any one have any ideas?
Thanks
I had to download the latest wireless tether app.

It disables the data on the phone because it ports it straight to the wifi connection. Personally, I find this provides a more reliable connection (though it is annoying that updates are suspended while you're using it).
Edit: It is not 100% pass through. Data still works on the phone, but sync is suspended.

Is there any way to get 4G tethering and infrastructure rather than ad-hoc?
If via wireless or wifi-tether app what version are you using? 2.0.8 pre-1 or 3.0 pre-14? Or something else? The built-in tethering turns 4G off, so alternatively to wireless tether is there a way around this?

Officially, yes (or, "It's a bug we're working on").
What I know:
On the Evo, the Sprint wifi app would authenticate to check if you subscribed to a tethering plan. If not, it gave an error and would not work. The Nexus uses the stock Android tethering app, which does no such thing. It just works.
What I don't know:
- If Sprint will work with Google to make the stock tethering app subscription-dependant.
- If Sprint will leave it alone, as a Pure Google feature they'd rather keep on the down low. After all, people are switching to Sprint just to get stock Android, and there are reports that T-Mobile still isn't charging for tethering on the Nexus 6 months later.
- If Sprint will detect usage and charge for tethering after the fact.

+1 on this! The built in hotspot only works for 3g. Of course we 4g owners want full speed so that just isn't good enough. I have gotten android wifi tether running on ad hoc and it works BUT I really want the added protection of WPA and the ability to connect other devices besides a computer. I've been searching for a way to run it as a wireless access point but haven't found anything. I'm guessing by the lack of response to the above post there aren't any solutions yet???

I know I'm dredging up an old thread here, but when I Google'd this issue this was the thread I found and I wanted to add the solution for others running into this.
I ended up finding a way to make this work! I'm using the latest version of android-wifi-tether (3.1-beta7). If you set the "Device-Profile" to "Samsung Galaxy S" and the "Setup-Method" to "Netd", it will support tethering to 3G or 4G (4G takes a little while to reconnect after enabling tethering) via WPA/WPA2. My tethered laptop checks in at 9.96/1.41Mbps down/up with this method.

what wifi tether to use

i just flashed the blackhole rom and all i can say is wow. it is incredible, so much cooler than some of the other ones ive found. but anyways im rooted and i was wondering what a good wifi tethering app to use is. obviously a free one that i wont have to pay ridiculous amounts of money for each month on my bill if i use it
Good luck with that. Most carriers are trying to crack down on this theft...check the market place they are there
Speaking of tether I have three questions.
1. If you start using a ridiculous amount of data you think vzw would catch on and try to charge you for it?
2. When vzw transitions to tiered data, they can't modify your plan if you currently have unlimited data can they?
3. Does vzw throttle data at a certain point?

1. probably if ur in the top 5% of users of data
2. no they cant. you are grandfathered in
3. not the 4g. i heard of people saying they used 40, 65 even 80 gb and they did not get throttled or cut off.

these phones can use quite a bit of data themselves. I think most of the apps use the "stealth" type of tether where verizon would have to guess that you were tethering based off of overall data usage.
verizon can throttle you. According to their policy, they will throttle the top 5% of data users, esp during peak times so as to not effect their network.

1. If you have unlimited data, then it wouldn't matter. If they can't prove you tether, then they can't charge you.
2. If you have unlimited data, you will be grandfathered into unlimited until you change your plan.
3. I've heard reports that they do and don't. I have never noticed being throttled, but I don't use a lot of data.
Verizon will soon be able to detect tether users. If you ever get an official update to your phone, say goodbye to tethering. Also google is starting to restrict downloads of tether apps to certain carriers, and you can bet verizon will be one of them.
Tethering days are numbered.

Those of you saying that VZW can't change your data plan/charge you extra and can't detect tethering are fools. The valid question is not whether they can do these things, it is a matter of whether they care or not. Right now I'm sure that they don't. The future is always an unknown.
I wonder if its downloaded through the phone if VZW would have record of it somewhere?

I've used that particular tethering app on various phones successfully in the past, and am in fact tethered with it over my Droid Charge (with version 3.1 beta). On most phones it's shown as an ad-hoc connection, not a real "access point" or "hotspot" like it does with the official tethering app. (The Charge right now is showing as an ad-hoc device, not a real wifi ap.)
Which version are you using on the Thunderbolt? What settings? I tried it this morning on the TB with 3.1 and while it appeared to work and connect as a real hotspot with the laptop, the laptop couldn't get any connections beyond the TB. I had everything on "auto".
Any hints/tips appreciated.
The connection right now for me on the Charge is more stable than with the official hotspot app...and it was the same with the official app on my Thunderbolt. I've posted youtube videos of both phones being used as a hotspot where the mobile data connection keeps flickering off, sometimes as rapidly as on for 5 seconds, no data for 5 seconds. It was maddening. Yesterday I had to pull out my TMobile Nexus S and use it's CM7 hotspot (which shows as a real access point, btw) to get a useable connection to the web.
Seems like the VZW official offerings aren't very stable.
I use the Wireless Tether 3.0 beta but you have to go to settings and click hTC routing fix for it to work.

Thanks! I missed that one in the settings. I also had to change the Device Profile from Auto to Generic, but now I'm tethered on my MacBook via the Thunderbolt, and it shows as a real access point.

[Q] Free WiFi HotSpot - Tmobile?

I tried to turn on my portable wifi hotspot feature on my USA Tmobile Sensation 4G, connect my laptop and surprisingly it works. (I have the Android Pref Data Plan).
My questions are:
1. Is this truly free? Because I know Tmobile offer their tmobile wifi hotspot service for a fee. I didn't sign up for that but how come mine works?
2. After the phone's display goes off, the phone seems to be asleep and the wifi connection lost. I turned on the "Always on mobile data" but still doesn't help. Is there a way to let the screen goes to sleep but still leaving this wifi hotspot on?
Thanks,

Hey I work for t-mobile so I think I can help haha. The feature will still work fine without addng the mobile hotspot for $15/month but if you use it often or a large amount t-mobile will kindly send you a text or letter in the mail telling you to stop or you will be charged. Hope this helps you

ok our native Tethering app works for FREE, as long as you dont abuse it, that tethering option fee only if you abuse it constantly and are constantly going over your set amount of data, so 1 you are hitting your data cap, so now your web is slower than a snail, two if you are constantly tethering T-mo is going to make you pay for tethering, and three, STOP ABUSING! i only use tethering for checking email every once in a while on my Laptop, and have never payed for the tethering option, i even spoke with a t-mo rep, and he said its basically only for abusers that tmo makes pay the $15 for tethering. hope this clears things up a bit.

Not calling your integrity into question, but I wouldn't believe this for a second. T-Mobile is a business and it doesn't seem likely that they would give their services away for free when they have an explicit add-on service they charge for.
Why run the risk when you can *easily* just install the Android Wifi Tether app and use that service a bit further off of T-Mobile's radar? It just seems far, far safer.

This has been happening to me for a while, I even started a thread about it, but no one responded....if you change your user agent to the same one your phone uses, then you will be fine, but it will take you to the mobile version of some sites.

Yes I have tried Barnacle several times, and it will still direct me to the the Tmobile warning screen....but if you just change your user agent on what ever you are trying to tether to (computer, tablet, ect..) change it to the same one on your phone, and the stock app and 3rd party apps work fine, but occasionally it will take you to a mobile version of the site you are trying to view.

Inconsistent Wifi Tether Issues!

I have been having intermittent wifi tether issues with 2 different wifi tether/hot spot apps. 1 being "Wireless Tether", the other the official verizon hotspot app. It is also worth noting I have had the same issues with each individual tether app across many different roms, with/without kexec, and tested with more than one wifi connecting device.
The first is the Wireless tether app. I have it configured with wpa2 security, I've tried both generic ics profile and galaxy nexus cdma/lte. When I launch it and turn tether on it appears to work normally but most of the time it does not broadcast the SSID, preventing devices from seeing the neteork and connecting. Sometimes restarting tethering will solve it but usually I have to reboot the entire phone to get it to work and broadcast SSID.
With the verizon hotspot app the issue is completely different. It always starts and broadcasts SSID, but after some time the internet will start running very slow on the receiving device. If I look on the phone the 4g lte icon will then be off. If I run a speed test locally on the phone it performs great with 25mbps dl speed and then wifi data will start working again on the receiving device.
Am I doing something wrong or just the first to complain?

Sorry I couldn't be more help. I don't like rebooting just to get the tether working either but I want my ****ing tether so that's what I do.. haha
I hope someone comes up with a solution though :good:
I have the same issue so I switched to using FoxFi. Seems to work 100% of the time. Sucks that it doesn't have a widget to activate the hot spot with a single click.
I am running synergy 1.3 and wifi tether works fine!!

I'm considering changing my plan on Verizon from a data only to the Everything and getting the SIII. I never use the data plan for laptop anymore but just haven't close the account.
You might be able to answer my question... Does Verizon still charge wifi tether (hotspoting) fees on their new plans? Before, avoiding this fee was one of my main reasons for rooting my phone (different carrier).
I realize you're having trouble with this feature anyway.

On the new plans, it's free to tether. On the old unlimited plans, its a fee service.
Not that many of us pay it.
Data only plan? Can you elaborate at all please? I want aware of such thing...
