Locking OEM

Hi I have just recently unrooted my phone and back to stock with stock boothloader and recovery.
I did this because I am just patiently
Waiting for the ICS update.
My questing is...how do I lock the OEM on my phone? I know you could but I want to know how. And ....if I do that....WOULD IT WIPE MY PHONE?
I want to relock my OEM, but keep all my apps on my phone.
So again, if I lock my OEM, would it wipe my phone?

fastboot oem lock
Locking doesn't wipe anything. Unlocking wipes.

You don't have to lock bootloader to recieve OTA updates, unlocked bootloader just allows you to flash something via fastboot (usually CWM). Just be unrooted and have stock recovery, as I do. This way you can always flash CWM, make a nandroid backup and flash someting else...without losing any data (you don't unlock bootloader).

Yea, why lock the bootloader? It doesn't need to be.
I thought locking the bootloader DID wipe. I guess I myself am mistaken too. (It would tell you though when you go to do it.).
Lastly, don't you think it's a little earlier to be going back to stock for the ICS update when it's not even announced as far as it being done and the phone; nor, is it announced of when the phone itself will be coming out. And, it won't be sometime till after that as well.
Just my opinion.
(You also didn't need to go unroot if you were stock rooted with no modifications).

Its just that I have lots of apps and I want to have them for when ICS comes out.
And....idk....I just figures if I am not rooted I might-as-well OEM lock just invade..if I might need to...for warenty

Nah your good on that... while it's rooted and awaiting the OTA... give your phone some Cyber air... over clock it with an app... install a better radio.. do something =]

Yes, you can be rooted, but you'll have to have stock recovery and you'll lose root with OTA update.

You don't need stock recovery. Stock recovery is not checked with an assert and is not patched, it is deleted and flashed using a full image. You can flash the OTA with CWM without any issues.
You will lose root in one of two scenarios with the OTAs, it recursively chmod's /system or formats /system (full update, not incremental). At this point all you need to do it flash the su binary again though to regain root access.

TMo Update Preferences? (Bootloader + RUU)

Hello, I wanted to revert my ROM to stock in order for me to get the TMO update. I was wondering if I could get it on a stock ROM backup I have (no root) or will I need to relock the bootloader and have no custom recovery? Thanks.

U need stock recovery and unrooted to get the update I'm not sure if the boot loader has to b locked or not ...but it probably does

It will only erase data and apps....anything on your sd card will be untouched

[Q] Rooted my verizon s3 with instructions on this forum and now I'm am stuck

Everything was fine with the root however I used a font app installer that got the phone stuck in a boot loop (on the rainbow screen). How do I get back to rooted JB?

Did you do a back up of your original rom? You need to get back into recovery...

Well if the font app got you into the boot loop then I don't think you lost root, I would get back into recovery wipe cache and hit reboot... See if that works... Good luck

Unfortunately, I tried that. I think I did an accidental factory reset too but nothing has brought it back from the boot rainbow screen.

Did you unlock using EZ Unlock v1.2? You only mentioned that you rooted.

No, I didn't use that. I followed the instructions to root found here (worked no problem until I met that $&#^%#& app) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439 I think I can reset using Odin I just don't know what to use

Aight, well did you unlock the bootloader? Your response dictates the suggested route to resolve this.

I did follow the instructions to unlock the bootloader

If that's the case then you just need to boot into recovery and flash a rom. If you were running just stock rooted & unlocked VRBLK3, it's easier to just flash a rooted stock rom like the official VRBLK3 leak here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2034118
Try just flashing that, without wiping, then boot into the rom.
or
If you were on a custom rom, just reflash that rom via recovery and you'll be fine. Unfortunately you lose all your settings of you wipe data in recovery so try reflashing either option without wiping if you absolutely need to try recovering whatever data already exists in your current rom. If this doesn't work, format data, wipe cache then flash the rom.

Yes it does need to be there. If you have an sdcard just drag and drop onto it directly then flash in your custom recovery. Conversely, you should be able to boot into recovery and try connecting your phone to the laptop then dragging the zip over.
The longer method will be to Odin flash VRBLK3 and start all over from there.

I don't use CWM but did you go to Mounts and Storage and select "Mount /sdcard"? Does it connect now?

Aight well since that failed, you have to do this the long way: Odin flash the VRBLK3 rooted image from your laptop onto your phone. Choose one of the two images for VRBLK3 and follow the directions.

That worked! Thanks so much. Now, what is the best practice for backing things up so that I don't have this problem again? Should I root first then backup? Do I still have to unlock bootloader? Just wanting to handle this properly from this point forward.

It should be rooted already if you installed the Odin files from MrRobinson thread. It should come with either SuperSU or SuperUser correct? You also should still be unlocked but you can re-unlock using EZ Unlock v.1.2 from the following thread and you're undeniably unlocked. You'll hear a brief audio message if it worked.

Also, please perform a nandroid back in CWM so you have something stable to return to if something goes awry in the future. That backup would have cut all this down to one simple step. You don't need to be unlocked to perform a nandroid however you do need to be rooted with a custom recovery.
Lastly, perform an IMEI backup using the "Comprehensive IMEI Backup" thread in the dev section. Do this and save the resulting Synergy zip from backup methods A and B in more than one place not on your phone. This is more so a precaution because flashing things in recovery can and may result in a complete loss of connection with Verizon.

Is there any tool that will reinstall the stock rom on a Nexus 5 with LOCKED bootloader? Something like emergency reflash from LG Support Tool.

LG Support Tool? There's something LG Flashtool and that works.

If you have to reinstall the stock firmware why do you care? Just unlock the bootloader, you're going to lose everything anyway.

The ideea is that I want to root this phone with Towelroot and I've heard that if Google detects a change in the system you can't install any more OTA updates. If this is true, I want to find a method to reflash the stock so I cand get the updates.

If you're rooted but otherwise completely stock, you should get OTA updates no problem.

Well if you modify any system files you don't get the ota. Your best bet is to root and then flash a custom recovery with flashify and then flash a stock rom zip that will be created shortly after any updates come out. You can also unlock the bootloader without wiping data with boot unlocker after your rooted.

There's a whole sticky on returning to stock so you can get OTAs. </thread>

If you're able to flash the stock ROM, you should be past the point where you need to worry about being able to get any updates.

Yeah. I'd highly recommend just flashing a prerooted busybox stock ROM. You can always do a dirty flash over stock ROM and still keep data.

You do get the OTA, but if you modify /system/ or something else, the OTA won't install.

It takes 10 minutes to return to stock for an OTA. Just do what you want with the phone now and enjoy!
The next OTA will be months from now. Return to stock then.

You dont need any tool. Download factory image and flash that by executing flash-all.bat (for windows, if you use linux execute flash-all.sh). Flash a custom recovery. Then remove hidden tampered flag by flashing tampered flag remover zip. Then flash stock recovery and lock bootloader by typing fastboot oem lock.

Yeah agreed. I use it to keep my bootloader locked but so I can unlock it without a wipe on the fly.

Locking the bootloader isn't enough on its own.
Android: adb pull data, MTP (Screen lock can prevent)
Custom recovery: adb pull data, flash zip to turn off android lock screen (Recovery lock can prevent)
Lock bootloader: Prevent replacing locked recovery with unlocked recovery,

Marshmallow upgrade

Can I update my phone to marshmallow by flashing stock recovery unrooting my and relocking my bootloader by an app from playstore.because I don't have a pc available at the moment.and also can I root my phone again after updating it to marshmallow?

1) Yes, see below.
2) You could to flash the exact recovery image of the build you are running now (which should be LMY48M), but save this step for last.
3) If I'm thinking correctly, unrooting will also restore some system files back, and IIRC, some of these might be install-recovery.sh and recovery-from-boot.p. What these will do is to restore stock recovery if, on a reboot, it catches something else on the recovery partition. Going by this perspective, you wouldn't even need to manually flash stock recovery.
4) You don't need to relock the bootloader to successfully install an OTA.
Don't rush this, take your time.
