Today HTC One started getting OTA updates to Android 4.3 in Taiwan.
This is the first time that some other manufacturer has pushed updates before Samsung.
As we know Samsung has (un)officially announced that 4.3 will be coming to S3 and S4 in October but still nothing has leaked.
Samsung may be testing it hard to deliver a fully baked firmware with ZERO defects or they have focused on Note 3 and left the S4 behind as it was done with S3 which is still waiting for Android 4.2 which was released by Google an year(~11 Months) ago.
What do you guys think, is S4 no more a flagship device and it's starting to descend?

EDIT: Sammobile is about to leak pre release version of Android 4.3 on S4.
Stay Tuned..

Doesn't matter much to me. I hope it comes soon, but in reality, it's likely to have some additional lock down Knox type crap, so I'll just stick with GE or CM or AOSP ROMs until Nexus 5 arrives.
Nobody cares about HTCrap anyway, last time they released an update it fecked up their devices and had to be pulled... Let Sammy take their time to not be a fail like HTC.

For the first time I have bought a phone on contract..
Now I get jealous every time Rogers releases a new phone and am not on their network.
S4, Note 2 and S3 are all getting Android 4.3 next month, so whats the fuss about?
Htc actually has beaten Samsung a few times at update release times. The Htc Sensation got Android4.0 ICS just before the GS2 and if I'm not mistaken, the Htc One X got Android4.1.2 just before the GS3? Can't remember, but this isn't the 1st time they beat Samsung and I am okay with that as it's always neck and neck.
Great news for Htc One users.
I much rather wait a few weeks longer.
HTC one is a great phone but HTC is crap. period.

How is HTC Crap? They certainly have had some issues before, but they made huge advancements with the HTC One. And now they are pushing 4.3 a month before Samsung (doesn't matter to me as I'm running the GE Rom).
HTC maybe pushing 4.3 now, but not everywhere will get it straight away, UK for one will be waiting weeks before they see it, and by that time Samsung should have the 4.3 update out for at least the S4, well Samsung do want us all to buy the Galaxy Gear lol , so the 4.3 update should come pretty quick.
As for the S3 & Note II they also shouldn't be to far behind neither with the 4.3.
Now onto 4.4 KitKat.
HTC have a nasty habit of not updates their previous flagships, look at the One S for example, it's not getting 4.2 & the One X most likely won't get anything else now neither.
I wouldn't be suprised if the One doesn't get 4.4 Kitkat, as this will be saved for their flagship next year unless Google bring out 4.5 or something before next spring.
And if the One does get 4.4 Kitkat, it probably be also the last update this phone receives.
Where as the S4 & Note III will get Kitkat, plus whatever else comes out afterwards to.
Who cares?
I'd rather use a polished out, relatively bug-free 4.2.2 than a bug-riddled, crippled and barely usable 4.3 just for the sake of being first.

It's normal. You can't invent something new without having copied something from someone. As long as it's not copied 1:1 and modified I'm totally alright with it. I even encourage people to do that if the have the permission or opportunity.
If i remember well, htc one was available few month before s4.
So finally htc pushed the update later than sammy.

So guys .. are we getting ICS.......
let us get all our rumors and news about that in this thread....
Don't be shy to post please.........
IIRC samsung annouced those following models to be updated to ICS (in the 2nd trimester of 2012 hahaha ):
Galaxy S2
Galaxy Note
Galaxy Tab 10.1
Galaxy Tab 8.9
Galaxy Tab 7.7
Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus
For others... we don't know ! Sounds this pact with google that is "you must update your models 18 months after their releases" is ****.
2nd Trimester? Probably saving that release to see if the world exists after 2012 LOL.

Clearly someone doesnt know what GTI9XXX Family includes. If they wanted to be specific, they would have kept it at GT I9000 and exclude the XXX's, I didn't know you worked for Samsung to declare that.

1. The author is fan of Apple.
2. The author didn't say that all updates for old versions of iphone work very bad on them. Also even for Iphone4 didn't get Siri!!! But it's just marketing. And so on.
Also yes this is the one problem for any producer: they don't want update old phones they want to sell new one. And Samsung one of them. Also because of this they didn't create drivers for original Android, but create useless ROMs and it's hard to support a lot of different ROMs and port to them drivers and their bloatware
the rumor that all GTI9XXX devices will get updates came from a rumor site only and not from an official samsung statement
doesnt mean we won't get it and neither that we will get it for that matter
however, our I9003 is not one of samsungs flagships or even very popular outside of asia/pacific areas
i read somewhere that samsung came up with our "inferior" device to be able to save up recources for amoled screens for the S2 and thats why we got an LCD
So in all honesty i really doubt we will get ICS
On a good note though, now that the Galaxy Nexus is coming, the S2 should be getting a bit cheaper and this device WILL get ICS
And a last sidenote... I wish the new Nexus would come with an sd card slot but then again, you can't have everything
if not offical i bet someone will port ICS for our device just like it got ported to galaxy s
Ported roms aint as good as official ones

Exactly the same situation here. If Samsungs new device sucks then its definately gotta be the S. Just hoping that the Galaxy's screen isnt as big as the One X's one. It's just too much... :what:

Well, even though it has it critics, and I do go through periods of using AOSP (and prob will on the S once it's available and stable) I still think Sense is the best custom UI on Android. Simple really, SGS3 can't match that element

Supposedly its going to have a 1080p screen, to me this is a bad thing.
1) I bet it is bigger than the ONE S and I wasn't quite happy with the size of the ONE X
2) It takes more horse power to run it, so its processor and graphics may be higher but side by side performance will probably be similar due to it having to push more pixels about the place. Also.. 1080p.. on a phone... What's the F'in point??
First i'm 100% sure that Galaxy S III won't have 2gb of ram neither 1080p screen. Its a next generation and since theres obvious settlement betwen manufacturers you can expect same specs as One X. And i'm also pretty sure that it won't have SD card, every manufacturer stops using them, why should they use them, about removable battery i'm not sure, if new galaxy is gonna be thinner then i guess it will have non removable battery.
I think the S3 will have 4.7 screen, so its big, also display will be as good as X. About other specs - I suspect quad core processor, some good graphic component, rumors about 12mp camera.
But anyway, there are only rumors atm, and Im not fan of S2, so I will go for One S as soon as it avaible here

But then again, i don't want to wait. Im tired of Samsung's plastic devices, ugly touch wiz, and international Galaxy S3 will be different from the US Galaxy S3, which will hinder dev support.

kinda yes, I really like GS2 and SAMOLED Plus is great. But we still don't know if GS3 will be SAMOLED HD or SAMOLED HD Plus. It's most likely be the same size as One X, packing same or better CPU, probably same or better quality camera, and most likely missing things like notification light and noise canceling mic.

Same boat as @tf442. I have a "first month out" Vibrant and GPS has been abysmal from the get-go. I have flashed at least a dozen ROMS (probably more)from Bionix, Trigger all the way to ICS 4.0.4 and they vary, but still no where near other manufacturers GPS. I will not give $$$ to Samsung since they went on the pine in acknowledging any issues with GPS. That, and quit with FROYO. Not good for a top-end phone at the time.
I am eligible for upgrade now, but I don't think I am going to. I might wait out until mid to end-year to upgrade. I am pretty satisfied with my G2 still. Everyone swears it's a great backup phone, but I like it as my main phone all the same.

It doesn't matter that it was never coming for the Inspire specifically. Any ICS update for the Desire HD can be easily ported and help all Inspire owners. We should be angry about this, not only Desire HD owners.
It means no official ICS. There are already several unofficial AOSP ICS ROMs and a few Desire V ICS ports.
I wont ever own another HTC product. Promise ics to DHD and then say the customer quality is what they are concerned about. Yet the desire c is half our phone and is getting it >.<

Guys let me let you in on a little secret. All OEM are the same when it comes to this. Mainly here in the states where the carriers control the updates. With the way hardware and Android are updating the best you can hope for is a 6 month period where the device may get an update. After that all bets are off. If updates are important to you then get a Nexus and be done with it. Its not like most dont run a AOSP based rom anyway so why pay all the extra for the OEM stuff. No need to be all upset about it.

There is nothing we can do about HTC cancelling the update to DHD except complain to HTC. If you want the best possibility of updates then a Google Nexus phone is the way to go (as already mentioned). Remember that it is probably not ICS specifically that created performance issues, but rather the combination of ICS and whatever version of a newer Sense (Rosie) HTC was planning. I have experienced that the phone handles AOSP ICS versions just fine, but Sense 3.0 and later versions paired with ICS would probably be a drag on this phone. Remember that when the Inspire came out, other manufacturers were already utilizing dual core technology so the phone was already behind the times upon release.
Right. Some of the custom ICS ROMs run very smoothly. It must be Sense that is the problem. Too bad, really. I intend to keep running with the Redemption ICS ROM on the Inspire until Google announces the next Nexus later this year and then I will jump ship. I was tempted, especially with JB, to buy a GSM GN but given that by October or November we might have some new Nexus hardware announced, I just need to be patient.

I have noticed that GB and Sense 3.0 and 3.5 custom ROMs have the occasional lag. I can only imagine what ICS combined with 3.5 (or even 4.0) would do to the usability. I have tried a couple of AOSP based ICS roms and they work well (except for the bugs such as camera issues). I have had better experiences in regards to performance with CM 7 ROMs than I ever did with the rooted stock rom (with bloatware removed of course). I will be buying a new Nexus myself once a newer version is released. I will use my contract renewal to get my wife a new phone every year (keeps her quiet about cheap gifts at Christmas and birthdays which are less than a month apart) and I get a phone which I know will receive support for a long time.

Relax guys. I've realized that even if they don't want us to have it, we will get it as soon as the Desire S or Incredible S gets kernel source for ICS. After that, porting a full Sense 4 or 3.6 ROM is a walk in the park.

Even then, team virtuous has nearly finished porting a completely working HTC 3.0 kernel. Sense doesn't work on our phones because we don't have the right kernel running under it. Virtuous and Pacha have 2 ROMs that are almost completely working. Camera doesn't work on some phones that have hardware from omnivision (me unfortunately :crying, but if you have Samsung hardware then you're in luck. Some of the other sense 4/2.6 ROMS also work without a hitch if you flash the 3.0 kernel, and a few patches.
Recently, news of a 4.2 update to Android surfaced : http://www.technobuffalo.com/compan...omization-center-project-roadrunner-and-more/ - if this is true, users will no longer need to charge their devices every 1-2 days and will have tons of "official" UIs (as TW, Sense etc. or user-made ones). But the biggest point is that all devices that get up to 4.2 will no longer have to wait for the OEMs to release their custom updates and will have the choice to do vanilla Android upgrades and later apply their specific skin (TW for us, Sense for HTC users etc.). So, what do you think, will you still be using your Galaxy R by the time we get (4.1 and) 4.2 ? Will you switch to a Nexus device (like the rumored 1st tier-specced LG Optimus Nexus or the 2nd tier-specced Samsung Galaxy Nexus II) to avoid not-so-popular phone problems like ours has ?
I've already sold my S2 and ordered Galaxy Nexus...I guess I'll stay with that a year or two. I know that OMAP 4 is less powerful than exynos but...devs just love it and I hope I won't have to worry about updates (look at nexus s).

Concept is very nice but this is so far from reality buddy because in this short time its very difficult to work on these many changes, I don't think this is will be possible in 4.2 but hope for the best, if it happens defiantly i will buy new Nexus device (Samsung/LG) or even current Galaxy Nexus is also very nice.....

M.kochan great decisions buddy, yes you are correct compared to S2 Nexus H/W is not that powerful but its has great dev support (which will suite you because i know you will play with all the available ROM's) recently i have flashed AOKP on one of my friends Galaxy Nexus believe me you will love it and never go back to any other ROM after using it......

You're right mate :good: I am m.kochan10 and I am a flashoholic hehe
I played little bit with jb on gnex in one carrier's shop and was shocked over this scrolling fluidity. I'd say gnex with stock jb is smoother than S3! It's the best picture of what good software means for the device.
well I am still proud owner of Galaxy R because before Android/XDA I used to compare phones on GSMarena before buying mobile or while suggesting someone, but after Android/XDA my thoughts have changed totally, regarding things to be considered, so after reading and learning things about flashing and Pimping Android to make it better than what your OEM provides you, it is quit clear that my next phone would be Nexus, one friend is coming from USA next month, so probably LG Nexus would be in my hand within 2 months, if not in budget then GNex is sure, and m.kochan10 has taken right decision, with any Nexus in your hand, you will never regret for at-least 2 years after seeing those tempting Specs of those SGS3, SGNotes or HTC One series, you wont give a flying @&$* about whatever OEMs comes with their flagship because you will be having your precious in hand.
and for all this useful knowledge I will always be thankful to my lovely Galaxy Royale
Yes, Royale will always have a sentimental value for me too. I learned a lot android while I was sgr's user! Before that I just could flash zips
PS.It's very hard to buy GNex now. In Sweden it's practically out of the stock and out of sale. Only few retailers/carriers still offer it for prices...hm equal or higher than in case of quad-core flagships. I ordered mine on ebay cos the price difference was really huge. So...I guess something is going on with the new nexus-line.
@parmarket...me too...i used to rely on gsmarena....
Bt after xda..it has changed me too...
@m.kochan.. Definitely R wld have sentiments attached s its first droid n leavin it wld b bit difficult...
M nt wid nexus..bt m with open hardware devices or devicrs that r dev friendly...
My friend has nexus prime n yes transition r awesome...
I even checked s3 of my frnd...even his scrolling or transition were smooth
Both were on stock rom wid s3 on ics n gnex on jb

Actually we all are same. Coz b4 joining to XDA i used to search over several site and major were gsmarena and now after joining xda my perception has changed.
I do agree with m.kochan and everybody who is posting in this thread. I will also go for nexus. Will order that from ebay. I m huge fan of galaxy royal bt due to limited user and limited support i have to take hard decision. BTW i will choose Gnex.
My friend have gnote and s3. Bro has s2. Now i would go for gnex. One step ahead of all of my friends and bro. In case of getting updation. I will b on No. 1.

i am not a hardcore user of a phone, i guess i am fine with SGR, let me see when my phone breaks down or burst
recently i got ipad so no money to buy a phone
My next phone is surely gonna be a HTC nexus for 2 reasons
1. Awesome build quality of HTC
2. Early updates for Nexus phones

I would be cautious here. The old HTC phones like: Legend (I really loved this aluminium unibody...so much that I'm biding a second hand model now ) or Desire line had a great build quality...but since then new models are marred with annoying and often very serious shortcomings. Read about One line.

That's true. In regard to galaxy serie so..in my opinion SGR feels much more solid than totally plastic S2.

dude I have seen many times you say you are not hardcore user of phone, but I guess casual/normal user wont be on XDA flashing and experimenting different ROMs against risk of loosing warranty or bricking, so in my view you are phone enthusiast

Do not believe in what it shows in Benchmark buddy. It just recogonize the Android version by what u give in build.prop file. You can give any version. I have even seen some results with Android 7.0.7. Its just those editing in build.prop and nothing more than that.

A newly leaked schedule reveals which will be the first Samsung devices to get Android 4.4 KitKat. As you could expected the first to get the new Android version are this and last year flagships - Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II.
Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 will get the KitKat treatment just two months from now - in January, 2014. The 2012 ex-flagships Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III will be getting KitKat in March or April 2014.

The new Android 4.4 KitKat improves the UI performance thanks to its Project Svelte - the successor of Project Butter. This means all devices to be update with KitKat will become smoother and faster than ever, with even better multi-tasking and improved RAM management. We are sure Samsung will bring a few goodies to its TouchWiz UI, too.
There is no official confirmation on the roadmap and we can't verify if this document is indeed the real deal, so you should take this info with a healthy pinch of salt.

Thanks,
That's a good news. I was afraid Samsung was slower than this.
Stock ROMs suck anyway why wait till January when you can get KitKat now

i don't beleive it will really be in January, unless the S5 is being released in January too. so my guess is that it will be by March for the s4 and note 3 and later for the rest
also when is samsung going to start focusing on tablets?

I think it'smore to do with the slower than projected uptake of the S4.
It may be a good selling phone but I don't think that the figure are what they expected.
Samsung
My hint... use this build its going to beta 4 today or tomorrow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397511, if u want real 4.4 experience for i9505, and more important DONT BUY SAMSUNG MOBILE ON LAUNCHER!

I have an S4 - would love 4.4, but it's ok with 4.3
I feel for my friends with S3 who suffered the botched 4.3 update -- one wonders if samsung should try to bring forward the 4.4 update for that device.. still lots around, keep them happy in the samsung family, take advantage of 4.4 memory optimizations. of course it's lots of the bloat that IMO is a big issue on that 1GB device...
Why buy samsung if ur not going to use its features??
Buy a Nexus if ya like stock Android and want 4.4 and it cheaper also.
Ill stay with my S4 since the 4.3 MJ7 Stock my phone has been super fast and my battery super long

Great joke
Samsung and fast update policy...
They update their devices only, if they need apis from the new version to support new gedgets. (Galaxy Gear or something else)
i dont think thats right, i guess samsung will save its 1st kitkat release for the S5 then the S4 after that

the only Htc one(as far as i know) that has kit kat now is the Google edition and the only lg(as far as i know again) that has kit kat is the Nexus 5
so by that logic the S4 is in the same boat(google edition)
the sense htc one and the lg g2 still run on jelly just like the rest of the non-google related phones
