[Q] Need basic help getting a recovery tool and loading a ROM - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I've been installing custom ROMs on my phone for a while now, and that process was pretty simple after finding some good step by step instructions. I'm having trouble though finding similarly simple step by step instructions on how to load a recovery tool onto my TF101 and load a ROM onto it. Most threads seem to be recommending using TWRP over Clockwork (which was in the Cyanogen instructions), but I'm first stuck at the basic concept of the MD5 files. I have absolutely ZERO idea what the MD5 files are or how to use them. Is there a thread someone with general step by step instruction on how to get a good recovery tool on the TF101 and how to load a ROM? If so...maybe it should be stickied at the top of one of the main forums for the TF101?

Have a look here: http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...t/31927-frederuco-s-guide-root-rom-tf101.html
I have not posted it here, but perhaps I should...

MD5 sum are just computer generated numbers to match the file you download. I'm surprised that you never heard of MD5 before if you've been flashing ROM for a long time. Anyway when you download a file here on XDA, there's always an MD5 posted that is associated with the file. You have to check the MD5 of the file you download against the MD5 number posted.
-There are many program you can check on your PC (I use WinMD5.exe)
-There are many app in the Play Store to check MD5
-A lot of the popular file manager can do Md5 check (Asrtos, ES File Explorer, ect)
If your MD5 of the download file match the MD5 posted, it mean the file you download is good and not corrupted or incomplete.

I use ES File Explorer to check md5. Also, many downloads have a .zip.md5 to go with the .zip file and then TWRP can check the md5 sum itself.

Thanks for that. I took a quick look at it and that looks like more in line with what I was looking for. I'll run through your instructions and see how it works out. If I find anywhere that needs to be updated, I'll let you know. Then maybe we'll see if we can get a post stickied on here somewhere to help other noobs like myself.

I've been installing ROMs on my old Samsung Sidekick 4G. None of those ROMs have any MD5 anything associated with them.

Ok, I went through following your instructions from the other post. Excellent instructions. Worked out great. The only small note I have is at the end when you get to actually flashing the ROM and gapps etc. TWRPs gives you the option of adding more zip files to the flash and it appears that you can simply do the ROM, gapps, and kernel all at once if you want. I wasn't sure if there was any reason to do them individually, so I just went ahead and tried adding all 3 zip files to the flash. When it rebooted, it just sat at the loading screen (the meerkat with the 4 colored circles) for a really long time. I tried again and just flashed the ROM, then flashed the gapps, and left out the kernel all together and all seems fine. Thanks a ton for the tip!

I have had issues with TWRP 2.3.2.3 when flashing multiple files at once. The newer versions I have not had an issue with.
I think I am going to re-do that guide but also use some different rooting methods and add a video for each method.

Can Someone Please explain MD5 ... The uses and how to compare and check?
Many thanks in advance
What it does, how it works:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Md5
Program to calculate checksums (for example):
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Md5sum
http://implbits.com/Products/HashTab.aspx this puts a tab on your (right click -> properties) and you can compare it there. makes MD5 easy.
its a way of error-detecting to see if it verifies 100% without any errors. this is critical when updating radios and things. if you have a bad copy of it then you may brick your phone or cause damage because you received a corrupted version

the OP would include a MD5. once you download it, right click the file you downloaded and go to the hash tab and copy paste the one the OP pasted.. copy paste it into the box and if it matches a check will appear meaning its 100% identical
if OP doesn't include one then you cant check

OP????
what happens though if it isnt identical......
When it isn't identical, then the file got corrupted.
This can happen in a variety of ways, including:
- There was an error during download
- There was an error during the original upload
- The file got corrupted during storage on the server
- The file got corrupted because of an write/read error on your hard disk
- Someone purposefully manipulated the file, for example including a virus or even changed the file so that it would brick your device if you install it.
In any case: If the md5 doesn't match, then installing it is a big NO NO.
Effects can range from no problems over occasional errors and crashes to a completely bricked device (especially, if the error happens to be in the bootloader).
Or if someone manipulated the file willingly, he could be spying on you or causing you costs by making your phone send messages or doing calls to special expensive numbers. Or he could use your phone as a proxy for various illegal things.
PS: OP = orginal poster = the person who posted the file on the first place
Thank-you very much I understand now ....nice comprehensive answer....thanks though to all who posted

MD5?

Can somebody explain MD5 to me in retard terms? How do I know what my phone needs? And how do i know if it's ok to flash?
I'm sorry I'm a retard... Lol

Seriously, has everyone forgotten what Google is? md5sum is a file's unique "fingerprint". It is posted to help downloaders ensure that they have the exact same file as what was uploaded.
Md5sum is essentially a digital fingerprint for a given file. The reason they are given is that it will give you a clue as to whether or not you have a complete and correct (exact) download. This is especially important in flashing a radio file. You will see them in rom threads too, but it is most important for a radio (PG05IMG.zip)
Flashing a bad radio in hboot can and will brick your phone. Flashing a bad rom or kernel in recovery is quite recoverable.
You can download an app called AFV (android file verifier) from the market and can calculate the md5 of any file and you just compare it to what is in generally the OP of any thread.

ROM Maker - Updated?

Hi All,
I'm looking for a windows utility, that can edit, customize and update an existing rom...
Basically, I am trying to tweak a Chinese rom to make it more INTERNATIONAL... However I'm not seeing many Windows (GUI) Apps that can do this, and if there is, they've been discontinued at ICS or earliest JB build.
Does anyone know an updated tool that can help me with this please...??
PhilzTouch is supposed to support this, but the package didn't work either...
Thanks, Lister

Philz touch is a recovery, not a ROM editing utility
Hi @DSA,
Yeah I'm aware it's a recovery, as I use it on my Note. However when I've tried to research looking for one of these Apps, some people suggested (and have seen in past, on unrelated topics) that with PhilzTouch you can clone your existing LIVE OS, and package it up to a Flashable Zip.
Well it did create a flashable zip, and it even puts it in a folder called "Custom Roms" which is based on a "Update.zip" file, even though it has a different name... However it doesn't flash, and when opened the file, it has .TAR files included and not a normal rom package.
So yeah, struggling to find anything that works... I came close to building/porting a rom earlier, however I received FCs afterwards...
Thanks, Andy

adb pull /system then zip with 7zip or winrar you will also need to make an updater script and updater binary for your device. with correct blocks so that the rom flashes correctly. so, you need to search for how to create an updater binary for your device and the correct blocks for data, system, and boot img. for your device. if cm has one for your device, you can usally download their rom zip and put all your info you pulled using adb into their zip deleting their's but note you will need your boot image to be pulled also which i do not know how to do

First ever attempt to upgrade my tab and failed! Need some direction

With much embarrassment I have to admit I really thought I was smarter than a tablet and a few simple clicks. Apparently not. So now I am here with issues that I am sure someone can answer because your more advanced than a few clicks and a tablet.
I have briefly looked for a resolve to my issue but it is very overwhelming. So if you can just point me in the right direction and hold my hand at the same time I would be very appreciative :good:
Issues:
I originally downloaded Odin, GT-P5113 4.0.4, CM 12.1, CW Unofficial Touch 6.0.3.3 p5100 zip. I launced Odin and followed the steps from a you-tube video. Well upon my surprise CW was not on the tablet so I was at the Tabs generic recovery screen. I choose the option to delete all user data ( lots of no's to select from and one Yes). Well continuing to be a fool I completed this process. When the tablet rebooted I was stuck at the Samsung logo screen. I decided to get to the download screen and install smt810_cf_autoroot.tar. After loading this tar via Odin I became stuck on the Android man downloading screen. Waited a bit and nothing. Then my tablet shut down and came up with "Firmware upgrade encountered and issue" with the tablet-yellow ! icon and pc icon.
Another issue is when i download these files Odin will not find them in my file. Why? I usually keep them unzipped as a .rar in order for odin to show them so I can select PDA and attempt to install them.
Is there a way to still upgrade the Android system and fix this Firmware error at the same time?
Basically I am so new to this I need specific directions on resolving my issue. So if anyone has a moment please help me out here. I appreciate your time and knowledge
And I can use Odin to install to the tablet. If that helps Just not in the download screen on the tablet.

first you should download the stock firmware of your device, if it's p5113 then search and download the same firmware.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2203309 check this thread if it's there, if it's not please google it, if already have it, ignore..
Once you have it, you should get the firmware md5 file (by unzipping the rar.) Odin will take tar file or md5 file. put it in Odin AP/PDA check the thread for all the details on how to flash correctly.
you have to get into download mode by pressing the power and volume up/right to do that once the firmware is successfully flashed and your tab starts running again. first get this part done.
Always use files that are meant only for your device. if your tab say p5113. then make sure the file you are flashing states it is meant for p5113 and not p5100. (maybe not in the rooting case cause it's same
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2203309 here for all)
At some places you will find files marked as p51xx. those files are generally safe too and are meant for the p51xx tab series but that is later stage.
I appreciate the feedback and have found I had tried to flash my tablet with GT-P5110 software when i actually have a GT-P5113TS. I have found the firmware but my issue is when I download anything and extract it with using rar. I never get a .tar file or anything Odin can not recognize to select PDA and use.. What would cause that? How do I fix this?
Thank You

Try winrar or 7zip, it should extract, you need md5 or tar format in pda section. If not what error are you getting? There must be some file when you open the archive?
Basically when I download the zip file I want and then extract it to a specific folder. All I after unzipping is File folders with other file folders inside,Img, File, PROP, and SH. I never extract anything that is a Tar file or anything Odin can recognize when on PDA within Odin. Plus a lot of times I click on a link for a download off this site and it sends me to some watch-movies website. Not a actual download. Or I am just missing it.

Maybe it's a bad link to your stock file then. Perhaps someone can give proper file link to the stock firmware. Inside the zip it's basically a md5 file for firmware to flash. Sadly I don't have a proper yoi will have to find of the net.

OPPO R7S Factory Flasher - OR - I bricked my R7S Help!

Here you go guys. Please help each other out using this thread on the how to.
It is pretty straight forward. Just read the READ-ME folder.
I highly recommend using the Factory Flasher version A.05 !
Download Link here: https://mega.nz/#F!70hwFCTa!Kiy6R0TeL70QrLGuvOHFAA
ColorOS A.05 will allow for use of the OppoTools.
Which can be used to gain root access.
Such as seen on my guide here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/r7...very-official-twrp-oppo-r7sf-3-0-2-0-t3358552
Look at the buttom for the PDF Guide.
Please do NOT PM me for help.
I won't reply. I already have hundreds of unread PM's. I simply don't have time for replying.
So please help each other out.
a short screenshot guide (NOT BY ME!):
just ignore the device model number shown in one of the screenshots and select the proper one.
Hey,
sorry to bug you, I know you're incredibly busy. I've gone to your provided link and downloaded the R7sfEX_11_A.05_151119 Factory Flasher file.
Only thing is - there is no readme. Not in the archive, not at your link. I need the readme to know what to do.
Am I being stupid, or is it nowhere to be found?
Cheers

i just noticed the DownloadTool is missing from the A.05 package.
Do this to unbrick:
download the R7sfEX_11_A.06_151210.7z package.
unpack it and install the Qualcomm Driver in the READ-ME folder.
run the "Msm8x39DownloadTool.exe" select the device model which is listed in the "Instructions.txt"
with this package your R7S is unbrickable.
if you want the A.05 version.
do the same just copy the md5sum.exe and Msm8x39DownloadTool.exe from the A.06 package to the A.05 package and follow the same procedure.
at everyone using those packages.
feel free to write a step by step instruction (maybe with screenshots) and include it in this thread!
i've uploaded one older version and the latest i could find to my archive.
older version R7sfEX_11_A.03_151105.7z (rooting works with OppoTools)
newer version R7sfEX_11_A.11_160721.7z (rooting does not work with OppoTools, downgrade to A.05!)
i also came across a possible list of factory flasher versions.
R7sfEX_11_A.03_151105.tar.bz2 (in archive)
R7sfEX_11_A.05_151119.tar.bz2 (in archive)
R7sfEX_11_A.10_160421.tar(1).bz2 (missing)
R7sfEX_11_A.11_160721.tar.bz2 (in archive)
R7sfEX_11_A.12_160809.tar.bz2 (missing)
R7sfEX_11_A.13_170311.tar.bz2 (missing)
if anyone comes across one of the missing packages. please mirror a direct download link and i will push it into my mirror.
Can this thread be updated. Had an old phone lying around and need to reflasg. Cant get into download mode.
Thanks guys x
