Blackberry release working version of BBM Android
Though the software teams at BlackBerry suggested they’d be beginning the roll-out of BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) as an app for Android and iOS starting this week, it would now appear that they’ve hit the proverbial pause button for both platforms. While it’s unclear at the moment if this cut in downloads and service to the chat app ecosystem for both Google and Apple’s mobile OS had anything to do with BlackBerry’s announcement of history-making losses for the quarter, it is clear that the results are thus: some people can use BBM today, others cannot.
Straight from Inside BlackBerry’s Luke Reimer comes word that some issues have arisen for both the Android and iOS versions of BBM. First, it would seem that the BBM app for Android was never officially released, but the BBM team saw a whopping 1.1 million active users in the first 8 hours of app release.
Be the first to find out when BBM™ is available on Android™ and iPhone® :silly:

By now everyone should be realizing that most/all of the available BBM apks are unofficial/fake and you use them only at your own risk. Even the play store has had fake BBM apks available for download. If you must announce, yet another version of BBM please use this thread.
Thanks!

If you're a Windows Phone user, and there are some apps that aren't on the platform yet, help us petition for developers to write their apps on WP7!
Visit iHeartWP7.com and retweet the requests for apps. If we want to have an impact, we will need far more users telling companies to create their app for us!
Right now, we're trying to bring Cut The Rope to WP7. Visit the website and find links to the company's twitter and the company's support email. Tell your Windows Phone friends too!
Other apps we have tried to petition for so far include Pandora, Scoutmob, Domino's Pizza, and Skype. More apps are soon to come!
Interesting website. Thanks for the link, checking it out now.

Same here. I would rather have quality original WP7 apps than running emulators on such a high quality system.

Code that goes through a Java compiler, and then through an emulator, and then through a Silverlight compiler won't be that great

Its articles like that one on wmpoweruser that make me hate smallish tech blogs
I realize the laughs, smirks, and shuns that the title of this thread may cause.
However, as the founder and community manager for bnxtreme.com, please hear me out.
I am posting this to clear up/clarify some misunderstanding regarding Android on the Blackberry Playbook.
NOTE: This thread is NOT about rooting the Playbook or completely replacing the QNX OS with Android or dual-booting. I will be creating separate threads for those, and hopefully, with enough traction, it could develop into its own section.

After DevCon 2011 in October, RIM released their BETA OS2.0 for the playbook.
Included in this release were several new tools for the SDK/NDK, support for additional programming languages, and of course, the reason I'm posting here, a native Android 2.3.3 run-time. Now developers have both on and offline conversion tools to recompile almost any Android APK for use in the BlackBerry PlayBook in BAR format using only a few clicks as shown on the following page:
http s://bdsc.webapps.blackberry.com/android/tool/
Shortly thereafter, the various Blackberry forums throughout the web were abuzz about what could be done with this new BETA, how to get Android apps install, etc...
Within less than a day, the post appeared with very quick and simple directions for users to easily convert Android APK files to Playbook BAR files. Suddenly, the flood gates were now open and the list of applications being converted started to flood in, as did requests for those who 'got it' to do it for them. Less than 12 hours later, the list became too much for one person to manage alone, so a Google Doc was created based on a Google Form where visitors could submit their requests and updates. The list had taken on a life of it's own:
h ttp://bnxtreme.com/drupal/content/apk2bar-list
As you can see from this list, individual PlayBook users have been actively collaborating and converting various applications to demonstrate just how easy the process is. It is hoped that this list of converted applications will help encourage developers to re-release their respective application on the BlackBerry Playbook.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If your application has been added to this list, it was done so because it was believed to be a free application on the Android Market, available as a free trial online, or offered for free through the Amazon Marketplace. If this is not the case, or for any reason you wish to have your application removed from the apk2bar list, please e-mail us at [email protected] and we will have your application permanently removed.

Now, within the last few weeks, ported Android applications have already started to appear in the Blackberry AppWorld, being made available to anyone running the OS2.0 BETA

The purpose for this post is to call upon Android developers to start porting their applications and submitting them to the Blackberry AppWorld. Again, the process is extremely simple and will open your applications up to a whole new audience.
Additionally, I am also posting to offer our services. Our team is both willing to help test any early BETA builds or to continue any abandoned development projects on their port to the BlackBerry PlayBook operating system; all you have to do is ask.
For more information on how easy it is to develop your existing application for the Blackberry PlayBook, please visit:

Why can't it be the other way? Blackberry Apps to Android? That seems to be better
Users of smartphones running Google’s Android OS were warned Tuesday night (Manila time) against a new SMS malware disguised as a version of the new Firefox browser for Android.
GFI Labs said the app posing as the popular browser is hosted on some Russian websites, one of which had hosted a malware posed as an app of the 10th Anniversary Edition of Grand Theft Auto.
“The criminals are leveraging on Firefox for Android in relation to the official, non-beta release of the said Web browser on Google Play last June 26,” GFI said in a blog post.
It said its antivirus product detects the malicious apps as Trojan.AndroidOS.Boxer.d.
GFI said the latest version of the Boxer malware, once installed, loads a Rules page on the phone and asks users to accept it.
The app then sends a premium SMS message to the numbers 2855, 3855, 7151, or 8151. The Rules page discloses in small text that users will be billed for sending a premium SMS message.
“Boxer then directs users to the actual website where the legitimate app can be downloaded after claiming that it has successfully activated,” GFI said.
On the other hand, it said the newest variant is more devious since users will not see the Rules page or be prompted to confirm Boxer’s installation and activation.
Also, the malware loads google.com instead of directing users to the actual download site.
“One of our researchers believed that this is probably an effort to make users believe that they have installed a dud app, thus, allowing them to download and install the fake app again, which, in turn, allows Boxer to send the premium SMS message multiple times,” it said.
GFI noted another version of Boxer had posed as popular photo sharing app Instagram shortly after it launched on Google Play. — LBG, GMA News

I may be assuming too much here but surely most android users only use play store or verified markets such as getjar or amazon and would not be careless enough to download from a dubious website?
Or they would google "android firefox" and follow the top results which are all official. So this would mainly affect people looking for warez?

Not necessarily warez, Most people like to "sideload" apks to their phone via their lappytop.
People in the tech industry generally perceive iOS as the more safer option compared to Android due to mobile malware. The fact is that mobile malware infects less than one percent of apps.
“The real concern should be over how mobile apps are handling personal info and company data. In that respect, iPhones should not be considered any safer than Android devices.”
Some of the iOS apps are actually more risky for the user's personal information.
I found "Things you should know about smartphone applications" very interesting.

[official][discussions] leaked version of BBM"black berry messnger" /Update #3
General discussion of the BBM application for Android.
Last update on 09/23/2013
Quote:
hi Android and iPhone users,
This is Andrew Bocking, head of BBM at BlackBerry. As a follow up to our first blog post on Saturday, I want to take a moment to provide you with an update on the rollout of BBM on Android and iPhone.
Last week, an unreleased, older version of the BBM for Android app was posted on numerous file sharing sites. We were aware of an issue with this unreleased version of the BBM for Android app. This older version resulted in volumes of data traffic orders of magnitude higher than normal for each active user and impacted the system in abnormal ways. The version we were planning to release on Saturday addressed these issues, however we could not block users of the unreleased version if we went ahead with the launch.
We attempted to address the problems caused by the unreleased version throughout the day on Saturday, but as active users of the unreleased app neared a million – and accelerated – it became clear that the only way to address the issue was to pause the rollout for both Android and iPhone.
The team is now focused on adjusting the system to completely block this unreleased version of the Android app when we go live with the official BBM for Android app. We are also making sure that the system is reinforced to handle this kind of scenario in the future. While this may sound like a simple task – it’s not. This will take some time and I do not anticipate launching this week.
Thank you for your patience while we take the time needed to deliver the experience you expect from BBM. We will continue to provide you with updates here on InsideBlackBerry.com and through @BBM on Twitter. We will notify everyone who has pre-registered on BBM.com when BBM is available on Android and iPhone."-Andrew Bocking, EVP, BBM
