[MOD] - [CWM/TWRP] - Modified Google Wallet v2.0 APK - Flashable Zip and Instructions - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

UPDATE: THIS THREAD IS NO LONGER BEING UPDATED.
I upgraded to KitKat several months ago (as should you, if possible). Since KitKat allows any device that's NFC-enabled to work with wallet, I have been focusing my time elsewhere.
The original reason for this zip (to save pushing wallet to /system/app and setting permissions/reboot steps) is also no longer necessary, so just go directly to the source and use loserskater's thread and APK:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2457569
So I'm attaching a flashable zip to this post (and creating a new thread), as I feel like we sorta hijacked the thread it originally came from.
I believe this APK will work on any NFC-enabled device with an AOSP-based ROM that's not natively supported by Wallet, but please report failures.
This will also work on non-AOSP ROMs like TouchWiz, but those ones will require the NFC library fix you can find in another thread (links are shown in below instructions for Galaxy SIII and S4).
I've tested this on a Galaxy SIII (intl and AT&T) as well as the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 (jfltevzw) so far with success.
No build.prop modification required!
Here are the original instructions posted by open1your1eyes0, and my flashable zip that includes the modified APK created by loserskater is attached.
In place of step 6 (manual push of APK and perms adjustment), just flash the attached zip in CWM/TWRP.

Try the following:
Force Stop on Wallet app
Clear Cache and Clear Data on Wallet app (in Application manager)
Delete all traces of it from both locations /system/app and /data/app/ (might be called Wallet.apk too)
Reboot
Flash a fresh version of your AOSP-based ROM (no wipe required)
Push the apk from this link to location /system/app/ and set the permissions to rw-r--r-- (DO NOT OPEN IT YET!!)
Reboot
Open the Wallet app and set everything up
Check what Tap and Pay says in "About" section of the app
Confirm what happens on transaction
***Note*** If the ROM your are flashing is TouchWiz-based for step 5 you need to flash one of the below for your device BEFORE step 6 and then continue.
For Galaxy S3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1943165&d=1367940081
For Galaxy S4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2006809&d=1370008832

This worked perfectly for me when following these instructions exactly.
After you've followed the steps above, you can simplify this process when upgrading your nightly ROM (like CM or any other AOSP-based one) by flashing the attached zip, which will push the APK and set the permissions properly.
It should be noted that once you get this modded APK working using the above instructions, you do NOT need to clear the app data or manually remove the APK again with the same version of Wallet when flashing new ROMs. CM and other nightly users can just flash the latest nightly, flash my zip, reboot and enjoy.
DO NOT UPDATE FROM THE PLAY STORE!
IF REINSTALLING GAPPS OVERWRITES THIS WITH THE STOCK VERSION, YOU MUST FOLLOW THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS AGAIN, INCLUDING FLASHING MY ZIP AGAIN!
All credit goes to loserskater for creating the modded APK and open1your1eyes0 for the instructions, since the zip took about 5 minutes of my time.

Will this work on Cyanogen mod if I've never installed wallet?

Could you make the updater-script detect if you're on a TW ROM and flash the lib fix accordingly?

This should only be necessary on stock ROMs or those that are not AOSP-based.

So for example, since the PA gapps package includes Wallet, will it just work from now on after setting up using the modded .apk? Or do we still need to flash this one?

I'm going to assume your gapps package includes the stock version of wallet.
If so, you will need to flash this zip again.
You'll need to do this each time you flash a new ROM though, as most wipe /system.
If you have trouble after flashing gapps, you may need to step through the above instructions again, including the app data deletion.

Yeah that's all it does.
I usually flash my ROMs manually, as opposed to using CM's built-in updater, so I just flash this zip right after flashing the latest nightly to save an extra step and an extra reboot.

I'm not sure what PA is, but as I mentioned before, if you overwrite Wallet, your best bet is to follow the instructions in the OP completely, which includes deleting app data.
You're essentially starting over at that point.
Let me know if you still have trouble after you've repeated the entire procedure.

PA = Paranoid Android. I guess I just kind of thought that was universally known
Either way, I was able to get Tap and Pay set up again by following the OP. Something about the way the PA gapps package installs the .apk's must make it so that this one doesn't overwrite correctly.

It should work without issue on a TouchWiz ROM as long as you install the proper NFC library fix first.

Most likely nothing, as from what I understand, the zips are mostly compatible.
Please feel free to test it out in TWRP and let me know if it gives you any trouble.
I've never used TWRP, but I'll see if there's a build for my phone and test it out if so.
EDIT - Seems to work just fine. I just installed TWRP using GooManager, and I am impressed. I guess it will take a little while to get used to, but I think I'll use it for a while.

[Q] flashing cm7

This is pretty much the only rom I haven't tried yet. I read about 10 pages on the dev page but Im just not 100% sure how to flash this rom. I'm currently running miui with blue recovery, so I'm good there. I've already downloaded the latest build according to the dev page, but I have no idea what gapps or whatever is. I read that I can download them in rom manager, I checked it out but there's like 10 versions. Do I flash the Google app then cm7?

With blue CWM recovery you should be able to flash CM7 with a normal flash in CWM. If you boot loop, pull battery and reflash. The gapps is all the google apps you need, Cyanogen can't include google apps in the Rom. If you download gapps through rom manager, pick the latest one. I actually downloaded gapps from the Cm7 wiki. (the link for it is in the OP for Cm7 Rom) Flash the rom first THEN gapps and you should be good.

Ya thats what I meant by normal flash lol. I know when flashing from red you need to format but, I can't remember if I did so when flashing from CM7 to MIUI or if its needed. You can try it without, and if it doesn't work then format, just make a backup before you do. I just remember the format system part is before you flash the zip a second time after a battery pull.

You need a custom recovery to flash the files so you must unlock first. [Assuming you're on Verizon] Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mmmeff.ez.unlock and click unlock. You're now unlocked. To install a custom recovery, download GooManager or Rom Manager and allow the app to install the custom recovery of your choice (TWRP or Clockworkmod). Then you're set to install Google Wallet.
I still can't manage to add a card to the wallet

How Do You Dirty Flash

I've never attempted a dirty flash. Color me fastidious. I've always done a full wipe/clean flash and never had any problems.
I just read, though, that I can dirty flash v6 of the Avatar ROM. Since I'm on V3, I figured I'd give it a go.
Do I just boot into recovery and flash the ROM zip file?
What about Gapps?
Once I do it the dirty way, will I ever go back to my old ways? LOL

Thanks for putting up with questions from a self educating non techie guy.
When you do a clean install, once you flash the ROM zip, how do go about restoring all your apps? I've tried a dozen different things but am wondering if there are any easier ways to restore my 100+ apps.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
If you move your apps to your sdcard first, you should be able to restore the data (not guaranteed). If you are doing any cloud backup, that will definitely help.
I copied my music, pictures, etc., to my external sd care (simply via USB). That took care of that. There is also Titanium Backup, but I'm not sure how well it safeguards if you're unrooted. However, it's one killer product, and there are many here who can chime in on how well it does before rooting.
However, wish I could say I did things perfectly there, but when I went from Gingerbread to Jellybean, I lost all my records on my aCar app (and had been keeping all fill-up and service records for almost a year). So I learned the hard way.

Titanium Backup. When restoring, you can restore apps, games and data. I only restore data for games, not apps. In general, don't restore system data. That can/will cause things to FC, giving a false impression there's bugs. You can also backup call and text logs to avoid losing them. I also have well over 100 apps and games myself, and it takes no more than an hour to recover from a full wipe and clean install of a update or new rom. It's because of that that I always do a clean install. Then you get the best out of your rom. A dirty flash is only good for 2 reasons. To try a new update with the expectation of restoring a nandroid backup, or if you're lazy and don't mind "bugs".
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2
You can also use carbon for backing up apps, even unrooted. It was made by the guy that made the original CWM, and it will let you choose where to back them up. Even has an option to backup to PC using the carbon PC app. I use both it and titanium personally, can never be too careful if you have several apps

What's the benefit of Dirty flash ? is it like, if we do dirty flash, we do not require to restore titanium backups and all again, correct?

It's just for lazy people who don't want to restore apps or set everything up again lol.
Sometimes it works ok, sometimes it doesn't

YouTube Buffering Issues on Open Source ROMs

Hi All,
Is there a fix for youtube buffering issues. My youtube sits on the buffering signal icon. Any tricks and help will be appreciated.
Same problem here. It seems to affect only certain flashers though. I went to a tw Rom for a minute just to check it out and now am trying to get back to cm11 or an AOSP based rom, but can't get YouTube to play. It just sits there buffering. I have experienced this on mastamoons Cm11 builds and slim.

Probably rom specific, you could try another rom and get back to it once the dev ironed out the issue.

No, it's not ROM specific. It is however open sourced specific. It has happened to me on CM11, beanstalk, and SlimKat.

Do you have any Adblock app installed? also check your hosts file. If you unable to find the root cause, I would just do a clean install: wipe cache/dalvik cache/system/data/ and format sdcard, this will wipe all the residual stuff on your phone and a super clean install. Sometimes if you have a bad configure file in your system and just wipe data and reinstall rom won't wipe it. After all Youtube is just an app that can be installed as system app or user app.

I think I will try the super clean install. When I format the sdcard, does that mean I have to odin a stock file unlock the bootloader again? appreciate your help btw buhohitr.

No, you don't have to Odin stock rom. When you wipe system it will delete your current O/S, when you wipe sdcard, all your stuff store on the phone will be gone like pictures, video, music etc... Once you done with all the wipes, just use custom recovery and reflash your favorate rom, I would try something less risky like custom TW rom (CM is risky) and see if that works with youtube, if it does then do a clean install again but this time don't do "format sdcard".
Any update on a fix for this problem?

Not for me. I tried all the suggestions in this thread to no avail. I think the only thing left is to odin back to stock. Just a hunch but i have a suspicion that there may be some fragment left behind from other rom flashes or possibly a remnant from exposed. Funny thing is, on a tw rom, all is good. As soon as i go back to an open source rom like cm11 or slimkat, youtube will not load on lte.

And thanks for porting over these ROMs (Carbon, SlimKat) for this device. My girlfriend MUST have a physical keyboard so it's great to have these choices.

ill look into it...also if you are referring to any sort of play services error...this has to do with the gapps that are flashed and it just needs to be updated from play store itself
can this rom be installed on cwm 6.0.1.2? ive noticed on a lot of the roms that they all say twrp.
Nvm I found out my issue. Was on an outdated cwm. Found the updated cwm and finally got the install in.

I have flashed this rom with CWM recovery without any issues. I'm not sure why one recovery is recommended over another sometimes, but if you like the rom and want to stick with it, you can always switch to the TWRP recovery. There is a flashable zip available on here that works just fine.
