Well, now it's a week later and my phone is back in my hands in worse shape than a week ago, now with a new gouge in the screen. The good news is, everything still works great on it but the screeching problem is still present. Everytime it powers up or I try to change the ring tone or anything that would require the speaker to function except actual phone calls causes and excruciating screeching noise. However, I am able to make phone calls and hear people fine. It's just that if someone calls the phone, it screeches - like fingernails on blackboard.
Any ideas on how I can repair this thing? How do I get the back off even after I have removed the four screws? Does it pry straight off or slide off or what? And if I do get it off, one of the tech support guys who heard the screeching over the phone said that he thought it was probably a loose cable going to the speaker making partial contact or shorting with something.
I'd like to give it a shot. I've got nothing to lose....... got any advice?

I have done the battery mod, stock lock screen, and Cognition (latest version, voodoo enabled) on my phone. Im getting bored now even though the phone has everything I need/ want. Are there any other cool things Im missing or dont know about? I would like to know all of the cool, well what you think is cool, mods that you have done to your phone.
Learn to make your own roms. That should keep you busy for a LONG time.
Sent from my Samsung Captivate.
Current rom: Cognition 2.3b3
I actually have been thinking about making an app. Any ideas for a good app?
A Cifs.ko implementation for our Captivate. Don't worry, I keep mentioning it and no one seems to answer. . I'd do it myself but don't have a clue of where to start.

I've always wanted to make an app for "ambient noise." I wanted my phone to "poll" the noise level before ringing and making adjustments appropriately. I like to have my phone on full volume for when I'm driving and got the radio up or out in the loud shop, but not so loud when I'm in a quiet enviroment such as a meeting, bank, store, etc.....
I see some problems with the idea such as delay on the ring and what not.....but I always thought it was a good idea....
And yes, I know how to put my phone I silent or hit the volume button to turn it down before hand.....jeez....I just like automation!

I just fount the coolest feature. You touch the phone icon and push seven individual numbers. Then hit the green button that has a phone on it. If you wait a moment a "person" will start talking to you. It appears that AT&T has assign a different automated voices to each number combination. The voice recognition works very well because they seem to provide very logical responses. If you use the same number more than once the automated voice seems to become irritated and threatening. Some of the ones with "sexy voices" don't seem to work anymore. I think I used the number combination too many times. Maybe we should make a list of working codes?
Its actually a good idea. Seems do able i mean you have a microphone and they already have apps out there that will put your phone in a certain volume mode depending on appointments in your calendar. Theres gotta be a way. There are sensors that work for brightness so why not this? I haven't made an app before so it will be a huge undertaking for me but ill look into it and see whats possible. I love a challenge.
Really?

This is a joke or for real? If its for real then post one of the "individul number" combinations. Sounds interesting. If its a joke then its not funny and you might need to read a joke book or something to polish up on your skills.

This sounds like DLNA or am I wrong? I just googled cifs.ko and thats what it looks like to me. If it is DLNA then the AllShare app does a decent job of it.

I agree this was a great idea. I even pulled out my phone to see if Tasker had a variable for mic input. Though it does poll proximity sensor and light sensor, it does not check the mic through preset variables. I am curious enough though, that I think I will head to their website and see what manual input might get that result.

It is a sarcastic reference to our excessive expectations and lack of reverence in some of the more simplistic aspects of our miraculous devices. I sympathize with your original post and understand the need to constantly scour XDA for the latest release or mod. With that understanding I found humor in mocking "ourselves" with the most basic and intended function of our phones...TO BE A PHONE!
It is easy to misread humor. A forum does not allow for pitch change, facial expressions or sarcastic tone. It can be hard for some people to communicate efficiently and enjoyably when they are reading something outside of the intended interpretation. When you combine this with the varying levels of intellect, age and types of humor within this community you are bound to find those who cannot interpret or understand a bit of sarcasm. We are not all born with a "Bevis and Butthead" idea of humor, but I will do my best to include a fart joke for you in my next post . I hate to exclude anyone in my audience.
-"Everything in the world will be laughed at by one, but nothing will be laughed at by all." <--- I just made that up. I don't mind if you use it later. It's cool.
Before I go I want to prevent any confusion.
This post contained the following emotions in various degrees and locations:
Had a feeling!
I had a feeling it was a joke, and more often than not people will post ridiculous stuff about how the poster is an idiot because they did not search the forum and things of that matter.
Its hard not to get a little defensive when you feel like someone is making fun of you. Im glad that you put that part in there about sympathizing with me because I honestly look through tons of pages each day looking for the next best thing or project.
You are correct about how some of us tend to lose site of the fact that it also works as a phone so im glad that you pointed that out. After i found out it was a joke it did seem funny. I rarely use it to call people now days because I would rather text or send them an email. So yeah that is funny.
P.S. I am a pretty funny guy according to my mom <---haha and fart jokes are always appreciated.

On a more OP related note. I am beginning to feel like a sales rep for Tasker since I have mentioned it in 3 posts today BUT... it has allowed me to expand/experiment when not flashing. Here are some things I have done that may interest you or give ides for apps.
1. FaceDown - I have the phone automatically go to speaker phone and max volume when it is placed face down during a call. Got the idea from my buddy's Tilt2 (winmo).
2. QuietTime - Phone automatically switches to silent during weeknights from 10:30pm-5:30am and when I am in class based on my selected schedule.
3. CarDock - When headphone jack, usb power, and left side orientation are all enabled/plugged it triggers the following: BT ON (connects to car stereo), GPS ON, Volume Maxed, Car Home launched.
4. GoodHusband - Widget that automatically sends a "Thinking about you" or "I love you" message to the wife. It works nice and quietly without opening the messaging application. Unfortunately I have not figured out how to make it randomize through a list of messages. That would make it perfect.
5. PhoneFind - Specific text message sent to my phone will make it quietly reply with a current GPS location and battery level. (I'm a lucky owner with GPS)
I hope some of these are inspiring. I have enjoyed toying with them.

Are you talking about the key pad for entering the super master codes in? Thought it was some glitch from my last flash. Wow, glad to know I'm not the only one.
Hows the recognition software work for you when drinking alcoholic beverages? Will the 2.6 ota promised upgrade revert the root and make the speech synthesis less Irish-ish? Huh? FarmBoiGadget had the article but Ican't find it nor do I care to back my beliefs up.
So, debate it.......6 or a half dozen? You tell me.
From a phone on an app
If you want to seriously pursue it, good luck and let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Be sure to keep me informed on your progress

Im actually messing with the Android SDK and Eclipse and all these other things I have no business messing with. Luckily there are tons of tutorials on line and hopefully I can learn something. Im starting from ground zero with this app making stuff. I dont know anything about coding or anything of the sort so it should be a fun process. Ill let you know if i get anywhere or if its even possible once I learn what the heck im doing. Could take a couple months and by then someone will probably make one. Ill keep messing around and let you know whats up or down.I have my music on shuffle, and im in a hotel room for work with nothing to do so...unfortunately today is my last day here.

Great, Tasker is awesome. Do you mind posting your profile setups for all? I can use these as well. Thanks
Hello all,
Wasn't sure where to post this but since it happened with my Skyrocket, I figured I would post here.
Something VERY strange happened tonight when using Google Navigation as I always do. Everything was fine and was navigating fine with the standard female voice for directions. Then, all of the sudden, I here a beeping noise and start hearing another female voice but this one was different. Don't know how to describe it but it was like a "mean" female voice. It started dictating all kinds of numbers and web addresses. It wouldn't stop. It just kept spilling out a bunch of gibberish, mostly numbers and web url's. (strange ones)
What the hell was that? Could my phone be hacked or contain a virus of some sort for this to happen? I have been VERY careful so I don't see how.
This just freaked me out. Never have I seen something like this on a smartphone.
What do you guys recommend I do?
Thanks,
Hmmm, in my expert opinion there could be two possible causes.
1. Your phone has been taken over by evil forces that are trying to lead you to their lair of pain and torture or
2. Your phone has been taken over by the forces of good and they are trying to lead you out of harms way.
Course of action: do exactly what your phone says and let us know the outcome.
Or I guess it could be the navigation app was reading raw location data. Now that I think about it I had the same problem when I installed a new text to speech engine.
tl;dr your navigation app bugged out. You don't have a virus.

Should I exchange my tablet?

How long have you had your tablet? and did it worsen? I assume not if you never notice it unless you look for it.

This implies it would not become a problem, and I do not think it will if you do not batter your device. Also, for the love of all that is holy, please use a descriptive title for a post, for
1) not that many people like to go "oh, let's see what that blank title question-mark post is about. I loooooove surprises! <giggle>
(costing you possible replies and help) and
2) more people that ACTUALLY know what to reply (in this case, people "suffering" from the same "issue") could have picked up.
Stop me if I'm wrong............
I sense that this is one of those "humor me I'm bored" threads.
Beginning with an ambiguous or vague question then ends up trapping good people who actually want to help someone into an ongoing useless stream of dribble that ends up cascading into a wide river of the inane.
Let's see who will be the first to suggest a search of the forum on the clicking thingy.
Then how will we handle the should I send it back question?
Closed, next time use a better title.
Thanks.
It's probably nothing, but my friend has been hearing a strange sound outside his home. It sounds like a data burst mixed with morse code or something. I'm not sure where else to ask other than on xdadevelopers so yeah. He recorded an audio clip of it. Does anybody know what it is? The original is named "Strange-Sound.mp3". But because it is pretty quiet, I made another version of it thats louder named "Strange-Sound-Louder.mp3". Thanks!
