Hi. I thank you in advance for pointers and direction. I have searched around, but want to make sure I am doing the right thing.
I have an Infuse and it is unlocked. It is running with a T-Mobile SIM card.
I downloaded Odin 3 v1.7. I successfully flashed from 2.2.1 (Froyo) to 2.3.6 Gingerbread by using this ROM/Root that I found on another thread here:
************ OPTION C *************
I997UCLB3-CWM-root-deodex-extras.rar
Features in this version
- Entropy's Daily Driver kernel
- Red CWM recovery
- Rooted
- Deodexed
- Zipaligned
- Busybox
- AT&T and other bloatware removed
- Scrolling wallpaper fix
- CRT off animation
- 8 lock screens
- Extended power menu
- Accurate battery mod
The phone is working properly on the new firmware.
I would like to jump up one more firmware to Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean. Every method I can find seems to include root, and I am already rooted. That happened when I ran "option C" from above.
What is my next step? Can I simply flash a Gingerbread ROM through Odin (after, of course, putting the Infuse in "download" mode)?
You need to flash a (ics) rom from the CWM RECOVERY of the phone not using odin and then you can flash a jellybean 4.xx rom.

Cool. Thank you! I am not sure how to do either of those things. At least now I have some research to do.

Thanks guys! I will play more tonight. Gingerbread is a huge step up from what it was on, but I might as well keep going!

My wife finally allowed me to upgrade her phone.. So I've recently just tried out these steps it's amazing to me that jelly bean 4.2.2 cm10.1 runs better than stock gingerbread. Only down side is no mhl.

Ok, I did a little research and I am more clear on the process - (download rom, put it on sd card, flash it using Clockword Mod while in recovery mode). I do have a question. Does it matter what version of CWM that is on my phone?

When I flashed cwm it was red recovery, which is what you stated you had in the first post by choosing option c
You'll have to flash ICS before flashing jelly Bean when you flash ICS it'll change the cwm to a more current one.

one last check ...
Let me check one last time before I do something stupid:
I have a rooted and unlocked (T-mobile service) Infuse. I had stock Froyo 2.2.1. I used Option C from a thread here that rooted it and gave me RED recovery. I used Odin and flashed the "extras" package.
I currently have build #: Gingerbread.UCLB3, kernal version: 2.6.25.7-I997ruxkg3-cl366622, firmware 2.3.6.
I would like to experiment with flashing up to ICS, maybe Jelly Bean.
My understanding is that I can simply drop a ICS rom onto my SD card and flash it from red recovery. Then I do do the same process to move to Jelly Bean.
Am I correct? Am I missing anything? Thank you ALL soooo much for guidance. I am learning and will pass it on!

Its really hard to screw things with this phone specialy.....
Yeah.....its typed on Note 3.
Ok, I followed the directions provided and flashed Infinitum ICS. All works well with the rom. Recovery is distorted. I see directions which include Heimdall to correct the recovery.
Does that process just correct the recovery or does it revert me back to something other than Infinitum Rom? if so, can I repeat the process to get the rom back?
My next step will them be to move to jelly bean and be happily ever after.

When you update your phone you don't flash the gingerbread bootloaders right, you only need to flash the gingerbread bootloaders and that will fix the problem.

Ok, I blew it. Flashed back to Gingerbread.UCLB3, firmware 2.3.6 with Heimdall. Recovery is still totally distorted/unreadable.
Next move? I assume I should flash a Gingerbread bootloader. Where would I find the right one? I don't want to screw this up. Then I can move to ICS and then JB with no issues, right?
I 100% appreciate your help and I SWEAR I will pass along what I am learning to a newbie as soon as I get a chance!

Hey! It looks like I corrected the issue before you messaged back. I ran Heimdall again. Thought I had blown it. Screen went all speckled red yellow and blue on me. It was kinda pretty. I booted in download mode and it was speckled, too. I followed the steps to download mode even thought I could not see the screen. I flashed through Heimdall again, it ran properly, and then booted into download mode and ran with "bootloaders" checked. It seems all is well. Recovery mode is working (no distortion) and is blue (Android system recovery 3e).
Can I follow the steps I took to go to ICS and then JB (if I decide to go to JB) now with no other issues?

1. Make sure you do all of your wipes.
2. Flash once to get blue recovery
3. It will likely hang so get back into recovery and do all your wipes again.
4. Flash the rom again and reboot. Should be good after that.
What steps were you taking?

Okay. Do the wipes as per instructions sake.
First, you're going to have to flash whatever ICS ROM you want. It will be stuck at the Cyanogenmod screen. Wait a minute.Take out the battery and put it back in. Now, when you reboot, you are going to have a messed up BLUE recovery. THIS IS COMPLETELY NORMAL as you have Froyo Bootloaders. What we need you to do is attempt to find the ICS ROM again that you wish to flash. Flash it the second time. Reboot. Voila!

Depends on personal preference. Using nun's aokp and was using RemICS UX edition as well. Both ran very fluent. AOKP has a few more customization options from what I've observed over the cm9 base builds.
Every single ICS ROM has its own distinction. I have personally tried JB's Ultimate ICS and AOKP.
I highly recommend these two. AOKP provides more customization options off the bat, but JB provides its own pros as well. It is just a matter of personal preference.
Good luck!
actually sometimes you wont have to reflash if it boots straight up into it

But the first time you flash it,doesn't it update it to blue, and then you can use that to flash cm7, right?

It flashes directly into the ROM and boots you CM7. Maybe you should try what you're recommending to do before you try giving people advice, you're relaying it by the way you understood it which isn't necessarily the way it actually works.
Go back to stock, try to flash CM7 from CWM 3.
Go back to stock, try to flash CM7 from CWM 5.0.2.X
Come back when you know what happens and you'll see why the instructions in the wiki are the way they are.
When you're in doubt about giving advice, read the official instructions. We try to make it as easy as possible for everyone to do this.
mierkat, to make things simple there are 2 different version of "RED" CWM. The old version was back on Froyo and the early gingerbread leak custom kernels. We have moved on from then, and there is a NEW version of the 5.0.x.x CWMs. This is because bhundven's sms kernel's and fb's sms kernels used them. On all the current-ish GB roms like vb fb and other new ones, you have 5.0.x.x. So you are safe if you flash CM7-CM9-AOKP-AOSP by erikmm-other TKA-other TNo0b-etc... from these newer Touchwiz GB roms. The best way to check is by booting to recovery. If you have 3.x, then I recommend downloading Valhalla-Black by FBis251 which can be found in the general section. After flash, without rebooting, go to the main CWM home menu, then go to advanced, then choose reboot recovery. You should now be in a 5.0.x.x CWM. Here you can have fun!
EDIT: FB beat me to it
I see, sorry about that. Was confused because i thought the red was always 3.x and blue was 5.0.x.x. When i flashed cm7,i just followed the instructions in the wiki

I would post this under development, but I need 10 posts to do that. So I hope someone will look here to help me out.
So I got the new update yesterday. I have nothing against the stock rom, But it broke my tethering app. I found a way to root my S3. [GUIDE] Root for Jelly Bean OTA ***UPDATED*** - xda-developers
No problem there. I was looking to install a version of Paranoid Android, But using Goomanager this was not an available rom. (Is there one for the S3) I tried a few other roms and they all looked kind of chunky to me. A few had a flicker effect when you went to the home screen (aokp milestone 1 and bean)
Well now i went the route of http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...-back-clean-factory-stock-update-10-23-a.html And I am back to Factory fresh rom with an unlocked boot loader. If I were to root the factory rom and leave it what would be the effects in the long run, and is there a costume factory rom (Jelly bean) that would solve my problem...
Thanks

Thanks for the reply's So what you are saying is I can run stock root until there is another update and the worst that will happen is it will break my root?????
Like I said I like how stock functions, but it broke my tethering app. I am still on the unlimited data plan and spent 700.00 for the S3 so i could stay there. kind of a waste of cash now that Foxfi wont work. If I can root then I can use open garden.
If your into the programing part. When using oden to root what does this do..VRALEC.bootchain.tar and then they have you do this one at the end.VRBLK3_Bootchain.tar
If I get answers for these I do have one more that I will post later....
Thanks again

Yes you can stay stock rooted and if you use voodoo ota keeper you may even keep root after updates.
The reason you have to flash the old insecure boot chain is so you can unlock your boot loader and install recovery, so that you can then root. The only reason you flash the new one at the end is so that to your boot chain matches your ROM. The last party is optional, but it just makes since to have as much matching as possible.

That is great..now to my last question..(a few more like this and I can post directly to the guys thread)
When doing this step I am using TWRP.
Step 4 - Rooting Your Device and Unlocking Your Bootloader
Quote:
Using your custom recovery flash the download you chose above from Step 1 (#3)
Upon exiting your custom recovery to reboot first time, you will be asked if you want to "Disable recovery flash", you MUST select Yes
After reboot, your ROM will now be fully rooted, have a custom recovery, and/or your bootloader unlocked as well
after flashing SuperSU + Unlocked Bootloader I go to reboot but it does not ask about the Disabling of the recovery flash. Should I be worried or should I maybe flash back the Factory bootloader with ODEN after I am rooted??
Sadly, this seems to be the most active thread for Paranoid Android. Currently that thread's original Dev is MIA and the last build he made was based on 2.54 (current PA is 2.99). Another Dev ported 2.99 but people are reporting issues with it. I ran the 2.54 one for a couple of weeks and it wasn't terrible.

You are reverting system files and such. Grab you a STOCK image from Sammobile than flash in Odin following the steps outlined in konanes thread in the dev section. Don't ever flash backwards between versions of android in cwm, you'll soft brick your phone. Bad advice ^^^^dude

You are reverting system files and such. Grab you a STOCK image from Sammobile than flash in Odin following the steps outlined in konanes thread in the dev section. Don't ever flash backwards between versions of android in cwm, you'll soft brick your phone. Bad advice ^^^^dude

I'm talking about going from firmware versions not ROMs. Going GB to ICS is fine. ICS to GB takes odin
Bml /mtd The partitions are changed from GB to ICS .
