[Q] GT-I9003 + CM10.1A9 (dhiru): its 3.0.8 kernel supports swapping or not? - Samsung Galaxy SL i9003

As in subject. My phone has SwapSD installed (32GB uSD seen as internal memory).
I'd like to use the actual 1.5GB internal memory with Swapper 2 to create a swap space, expanding phone's RAM?
3.0.8 kernel supports memory swapping?
Thanks,
Leonardo.

I think sdSwap is a placebo effect i used time ago and didnt notice any improvement in terms of performance, other thing is Zram included in our 3.0.8 kernels, this is a virtual ram who complements the default ram and i think enabling it can feel a bit of more multitask and performance, for enabling go settings/performance/memory management/enable zram and reboot, to control the swappyness you can use performance control.apk and to see if its working type ( free ) in terminal. Try both methods and decide by yourself, im just only sharing my experience, hope it helps you on your doubts.

Thanks (already thanked with button, too...:good for the answer!
I'm trying zRAM. But I have a question.
In my opinion, SwapSD and Swapper 2 are two completely different apps.
SwapSD is used to swap between phone's internal memory and the MicroSD memory (storage)
Swapper 2 is used to create a swap space (virtual RAM).
So if I want to give a try with Swapper 2, I need to know if 3.0.6 kernel supports RAM swapping... I don't want to brick my SL...

What i want to say with sdswap is what you are trying to do, a partition on sdcard to be used like ram its not the same like sdswap.apk.
Feel free to use swapper2 or other similar apps to do that theres any problem with our kernels i already did it with any problem and any noticeable improvement.

Asking for an app

Hey Guys!!
I was wondering.....is there any app for android which would allow us to use some space in our phone or external memory as RAM like Eboostr on Windows???
Hello,
you can use a taskmanager, some can optimize your RAM periodically!
sorry for the late reply but i just wanted to know of an app for using a part of sd card as ram.........not because i'm short of it............but to increase it

I know what u mean it. But then,no. Bcoz as far as i known, android is based on memory resource. Thus, not use much 2 use ram. And the application are automatically being killed when there are less ram. Thus improving speed.
Just to decrease ram used,i think by using cyanogen or any custom rom that less ram used.
As u said about the sd card as ram. I think that windows 7 use the pendrive or etc as a cache/memory swap. To increase speed.
Correct me if im wrong.

Google about android memory management.
Apps interfering with the systems own management do more harm than good.
@OP
Android already uses swap if the RAM is full.
But you can probably increase the swap partition.
Google or search the forum for "android increase swap" or something like that.
This will require root.

in Stock ROM swap is enabled by default !

Check it yourself.
Type in terminal:
su
cat /proc/meminfo
There is about 128Mb of swap.
What's your opinion about this?
would it be a big deal?

Actually I don't like the idea of swap in O3D
It may cause lags because we already have a dual channel 512MB ram
Is it necessary to have more 128MB of swap but slower? Also vm have to decide which is swap which is not swap...waste more cpu
Pls correct me if i was wrong
I added some "#" in /system/bin/swap_enable.sh...check it out
Yes it can cause some lags when dropping things to swap etc.
but maybe it can be sometimes useful?
Why lg did it in the stock ROM?
Do you notice any speed up after disabling it?
Yes before add those # I had some lags when finish an asphalt6 round, now lags gone.
On the other hand I thought because LG had a lot of bloatware in stock rom so they wanted to make sure there are enough memory, and they used swap.
I removed a lot of things that I don't need, tweak the minfree, vm, disable swap and everything still fine.

I did the same but it still shows about 36mb of swap after the restart. Strange. I hope there will not be the case when eg. camera app or sth else will crash because of the lack of ram
So there is still 36mb swap script somewhere.

probably you need to add 3 # in the beginning of each line. i did it that way and now have no swap at all.
I was mistaken. It's Ok now.
So what should we, inexperienced users, do?

Everybody can try. You need root explorer. Open /system/bin/swap_enable.sh as text edit. Then just add 1 # before each line (3 lines). Reboot and experience yourself.
You may enjoy it or not...but at least you have 1 more choice

As far as i know the physical ram amount will not bechanged. Only it will be re-emptied earlier than it is with swap, which is practically no change in total.
wow this is really quite an eye opener, to think that lg opted to use swap because they new 512mb wouldnt cut it is quite bad in my eyes. i wonder if we can increase the amount of swap and see if that makes for more free active ram? as i find games like GTA3 it bogs down as its quite a memory hungry game
it was much better if LG added 1gb of ram to our phone from the beginning thought. i decide to exchange my optimus 3d for a atrix, photon or galaxy s 2 because im a heavy multitasking user, 512mb is not enought.

Swap(virtual ram) space?

Before anyone rages at me, I have done a google search and an xda search.
I was wondering if it was possible to use the SD card as a virtual ram or swap space as some may call it. I tend to open tons of apps and games on my g2x and it quickly fills the 200mb ish ram that is available(this excludes OS and essential sys apps.) It would be super nice if i could partition off maybe 1-4gb as swap space and be able to open tons of games and other applications without ever needing to close them.
My G2X specs if it matters.
Cyanogenmod 7 latest nightly
faux kernel version 50
overclocked to 1.4ghz with a slight undervolt.
32GB SD card class 10
Edit: After further research on this, I have found a solution. An application called Swapper for Root or Swapper 2 will create a swap file on the sd card and do exactly this.
You don't want to. Sd cards are slow and it adds a lot of stress on it, decreasing the lifespan.
Am I the only one unable to use up a half gig of ram?
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
I've enabled 700mb of swap on mine and I don't see a lot of slow down. Only slow down I've encountered is with my sphere page changing effect but even so its it barley noticeable but this is probably because of the class 10 sd card.
Current stats on my ram usage according to terminal free command.
mem: total - 381972 used - 367880 free - 14092
swap: total - 716792 used - 126688 free - 590104
with ~123MB being used and with very minimal lag, I think its worth it for the way I use my phone.
That is awesome man. never even thought of that idea. please let us know how it works out after a week or so.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
I've been using Swapper 2 along with SD -Booster for a coupe weeks now. And I am only running a 16gb class 4 card, but I do notice a difference in how the phone runs with multiple or RAM hungry apps, and now I find I don't need to use a task killer anymore to resolve lag issues.
I am using:
CM7 Hellfire Phoenix 2.2
Faux 049 kernel
OC usually 1200 with no UV
JIT compiler and Compcache RAM disabled
VM Heap Size 64mb
Swapper 2 set @ 200mb @boot
SD Booster set to 2048kb cache
Few other tweaks. Phone is fast and stable. And I use it heavily from streaming video from my private server on my home network, to gaming tons of HD games. And several of the games I have edited the XML file to unlock Tegra 3 graphics options. I play Dead Trigger on the Ultra High settings and those are for Tegra 3 chipsets and the phone doesn't skip a beat.
hey, my first post!
I wonder if there's any advantage of using emmc over your sdcard? Since it's internal shouldn't it be faster and less harmful?

There is definite differences between using your internal sd and external. But that depends on the class and read/write speads of your external. As far as swap goes, I do not think there would be much difference either ways since the linux/android kernel is built to keep ram space cleared when it needs it. I am constantly building ics/gb/jb on my linux machine with 8gb of ram and I have only seen my pc go into swap when i leave it on for weeks at a time. Swap only picks up in linux when the memory is overwhelmed. So, I really don't think there would be much benefit since almost all kernels run minfree and other tweaks to keep memory freed up for performance.
I wonder if we can use our data partition for swap or any other partition? Since swapper does have the option to use a partition as swap.

SD to Ram?

Who have tried this mod? I believe ive read it before i just cant see the thread, as i remember its called sd swap (but not that sd swap int2ext)if im not mistaken? Is it worth a try? The mod which gives partition from sd card to expand ram?
EDIT- This one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1659231

wow .. i ll tried it sooon ....
more ram ..... hhh more Hd Games
Sounds awesome, but the maximum swap of 256 MB is a dampener! Hope someone tries it on their i9003 and reverts if it works on this device.

Try Ram expander app. It dioes same job. I tried that app but frankly speaking we must need class 10 memory card to see actual noticeble difference.
I have a class 10 microsd card and am willing to try this on my i9003, however, would like to try it before I buy this app. Can someone point me to a trial version of this app?

Tried the Ram Expander app on my SL and successfully created a 1422MB partition on my class 10, 16GB microSD card. Terminal Emulator confirmed the same. (Total RAM 1.44 GB)
Need to test it on some games though, any suggestions?

Tried it on my 16GB class 10 card, and didn't find any noticable difference. What a waste!
As far as I know, the swap is used to cache some memory, not all... it doesn't matter if you make a 4gb partition for SD to swap, it probably will use a max of 256mb.. the way it works it's to cache some stuff there, so you have a little more free memory in your device... You will probably never feel the difference in any device with more than 256mb of RAM memory... plus... reading the SD is really slow... so I don't think it would make any difference to us...
Yup, swap is a Linux tool, used to augment the existing RAM, by using a partition on a disk to store less required pages from the RAM in that partition. It is slower than RAM, and dependant on your sdcard IOPS (read and write speed).
ZRam would be better, but that's up to a kernel dev to implement.
Whatever happens though, these features are just to improve multitasking, rather than loading large games and giving the device a speed boost.

[Q] Nexus 5: set the size of devices as you want

Hello,everyone!
I have a Nexus 5 whose ram size is about 2GB. Now, I want to change the ram size to 1G or anything else below 2.
Do you have any idea? If so, please share with us now. I'll appreciate that very much!
Someone told me that I might try the bootloader, but I havn't figured that out yet. Please help me out! Thanks again!
Hi,
But... Why do you want to reduce your RAM size????
RAM is allocated to user apps, system, GPU, etc... it's possible (for some devices) to re allocate the RAM for the GPU (a little more) for example at kernel level, but here you want to re allocate 1 Gb of RAM, seriously? Why? Even if it was possible, here what do you expect?
For other devices with an unlock bootloader it's the system partition size (I don't remember the exact name) you re allocate to be used for the user (apps), maybe it will be possible in the future for the N5?
But here, honestly, I don't uderstand why you want that

Firstly, thanks for your response!
Now I'm doing a series of experiments on swap partition. For the ram size of N5 is a little too large to make use of the swap area I created.
So I want to make the ram size small enough so that the device could run out of memory and would swap things out to emmc(swap area).
Have I made it clear to you? Looking forward to your reply!:fingers-crossed:
Hi,
Yes it's a little clearer, maybe, but why do you want that? What kind of experimentation are you doing? It's totaly counter productive...
Some apps like Ram Manager for example (Play Store) can create a swap file, there is also some kernel like Faux123 with, grrr don't remember exactly the name, something like Zramswap or... not sure...
But you don't reduce the RAM size, on 2Gb, you have about 1,8 Gb free for the system, apps and that's all, you can't reduce this part. At the end with a clean and light system booted you have about 1,6 Gb free. What you want will virtualy increase the RAM size (with the swap file).
In any case with the app above, use it to create and use your swap file, open one or two "big" apps, a game and you will see that it is used...
Tweak also the OOM settings to run Out Of Memory earlier, see Google.
You want reduce the amount of free RAM not reduce the RAM size. For me it's not the same thing.
Or I don't understand again, and I'm sorry. But I don't see the point...

Well, actually it's quite simple. The Nexus 5's RAM size is too large(ok, it's about 1.8Gb free or less). Even After I have run a lot of apps, there are still serval hundred Mb RAM free(Maybe I can run more apps, but it doesn't worth. Or I should choose another device with smaller RAM size. But that's out of my budget). Yes, as you said I want to reduce the amount of free RAM. But reducing the RAM size can also work for me.
All in all, I want to see the benefit of swap area through the experimnt?
Ok, my friend, you have got that right? It's ok, if you still feel confused. I'm glad to tall with you!
