Card reader not being detected by the PC AND Why can't my card reader/writer be detected by my PC?
SOLUTION 1 - Verify if minimum system requirement is met.
SanDisk card readers support Windows Vista, Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2000 SP4, Windows 7.
NOTE: No additional drivers need to be downloaded for the card readers as they are native to the above mentioned supported operating systems.
SOLUTION 2 - Verify the reader's status under Device Manager.
STEP 1 - Connect the reader to the PC
NOTE: It is recommended that you plug your card reader to the back USB port on your PC to ensure that there is enough power from the USB port for the card reader to be detected properly.
STEP 2 - Check under Device Manager
1. Right-click My Computer.
2. Select Manage.
3. On the left pane, click Device Manager.
NOTE: The card reader will appear in two places: Disk Drives and Universal Serial Bus controls as USB Mass Storage. If there is a yellow exclamation point (!) or question mark (?) next to the device, try to refresh the drivers.
STEP 3 - Refresh the drivers
1. Right-click the entry with the error mark, select Uninstall.
2. On the top menu, click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes.
STEP 4 - Verify if the reader is detected
1. Double-click My Computer.
2. Look for the card reader under Devices with removable storage.
SOLUTION 3 - Try other USB ports.
A yellow exclamation point (!) under Device Manager usually means that the device is not receiving enough power. If the reader is not receiving ample amount of power from the USB port, it may not function properly.
SOLUTION 4 - Change the drive letters
NOTE:The SDDR-89, SDDR-189, SDDR-289 reader should show 4 drive letters under My Computer..

Thanks for your post! I've been having issues where anything that I save to my SD gets corrupted and I've already tried reformatting it from my phone (I don't have a computer right now... my laptop bit the dust not too long ago...) but I'm still having the same problem... any ideas why this might be happening?

[Q] Wiping my SD card/formatting solution.

Hi
Just wondered how i completely wipe all my data from this disk?
I can boot into clockworkmod restore factory defaults and clear cache. I just need to know how to wipe the SD card.
Trying to revert the phone to the beginning.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA App
Settings/ sd card/ unmount sd/ format sd card!...
Sent from my HTC Vision
This worked to some degree.
Once I unmounted it and erased the SD card I couldn't mount or format the card again :/. Nothing I did worked.
I tried formatting my SD card when connecting the phone to my windows laptop but couldn't do it either.
I have clockworkmod installed on my phone and think I have found a solution.
Keep your phone connected to your laptop. If you reboot into recovery on your phone and go to "mounts and storage menu", then "mount USB storage". On your windows platform it should popup something like "need to format this drive before you can access it". so I formatted the drive, fat32, allocated unit size 32kb, check "quick format". Start.
once it's done in windows, select in clockworkmod "format /sdcard" and then "mount /sdcard" and reboot.
It should work.
In case this helps you along the way - this program seems to come recommended for formatting SD cards.

I tried that a couple of days ago. Formatted my new 32GB microsdhc card fine. But XP Pro (with SP3) couldn't see it on my desktop so couldn't drop all my data onto it. In the end I formatted the card with my Nokia E71, mounted it as a 'disk' on the PC and all was fine.
(Didn't do it on the DHD 'cos I didn't want to tie it up for 7 hours copying all my music across)!

If your PC environment is Windows based, you may want to think about using SyncBack Freeware. It will ensure that every file has been moved. I've been using this to move large folders/directories for many years.

wats the problem with cwm? Wat error it shows?
Insert it in PC card reader. Find some partition manager, other than mini partition tool, for PC and try to repartition it.
If you use Windows 7 go to Control Panel->System and Security->Administrative tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management
and check if your card (and it's partitions) is shown. If it is try to remove existing partitions and create new FAT 32 partition spaning over entire disc.
i've used easeus partition master, and
easeus partition recovery + partition table doctor +hdd regenerator + sd formatter + minitool partition + [email protected] partition recovery+ flobo
i think it's hopeless
@tomashokenberi all of the programs including disk management , are showing one unallocated partition (1 Gb) and everytime i try to format the partition, the program fails, all of them
@vikraam the cwm just says formatting then done ( nothing else )
somebody said to me to try an mbr tool or program, and i havent found one that works on my pc (x64) do you have suggestions
How many partitions are actually shown in disk management? One or more? If there is more than one partition try to delete all partitions then create one new partition.
Also if your Windows PC uses some "ext2/3 enabler", that is software and driver that allows access to ext2/3/4 partitions from windows it may interfere with disk management and create problems.
it is showing only one partition, i've tryed gparted live cd, on several different pcs and different sd adapters all saying ( access denied, or write protected ), and yes the switch is correct,,
so what should i do now, make a hole in it and use it like a Key Chain

thanks, though this is an old post but you helped me with my sd card also.
faced the same problem....
simple solution:format with blackberry
Command Prompt
I don't know if the problem was solved. I have suggestions. They are worth trying but not guaranteed to work.
The 'Disk Management' thing doesn't work. I use Windows 10. It gets stuck (becomes entirely Unresponsive) until I pull out the card from the reader. And the same also happens when I double-click or right-click on the SD card in Windows Explorer.
Maybe this can work-
Check the Lock switch on Card. It should not be locked.
On the computer, disable any antivirus feature of auto-scanning USB disks when connected. Also disable Windows USB AutoPlay.
Connect Card to computer with a good card reader.
With Windows Explorer, find the drive letter of the connected SD Card.
Open Command Prompt as Administrator and write
format <drive letter followed by colon : and no slash>
Example - Attached to this post.
If error appears "Insert New Disk and press ENTER", just press 'ENTER' directly.
If error appears "Cannot open volume for direct access", write the format statement in 5th step again.
These errors appear 3-4 times, but keep following the above steps till these statements appear -
"The type of the file system is FAT32. Verifying <your card size>"
Good luck !!
Otherwise, try this http://www.cardrecoverypro.com/

Please confirm that you had done an "eject" SD card from the MAC to unmount the SD card properly. This is the same as "Safe to Remove Hardware" for Windows. If not ejected (unmounted) properly, the next time you use it on another device, it may not be recognisable. If this is the case, simply insert the SD card back to the MAC and then eject it.
Otherwise, you can try re-initialise/re-formatting to FAT32 using software tools. Your phone recognises SD cards formatted in FAT32. If you format it with a MAC, it will not be in FAT32.
First, you can try formatting by using software for for SD cards, SDFormatter 4.0 - download from:
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/
If that does not work, use a partition manager to re-partition and format to FAT32.
1. MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition - download from:

2. EaseUS Partition Master 9.2.2 - download from:

If you have a Mac, use the Disk Utility app (you can find it in the Applications/Utilities folder) for format the SD card.
After doing that you should be able to read and write the card on the phone, Mac or Windows without problems:
1. On your Mac, connect the card
2. Open Mac HD on your desktop
3. Open Applications
4. Open Utilities
5. Open Disk Utility
6. On the left you should see the hard drive listed. It should show the drive size with a second indented line beneath it that shows the volume of the drive.
7. Click "Erase" at the top of the screen.
8. Select MS DOS(FAT) File System for the volume format option.
9. Change the name of the drive if desired.
Click "Erase" at the bottom of the screen. You will get a warning and will need to click "Erase" again.

my SD became write protected.

Hey everyone,,
I have a 16g micro SD card and it was fine until one week ago, I used an android app for downloading torrent called uTORRENT. I started to download a movie on my mobile left it for about half hour and when I came back and checked the downloading progress I noticed that the downloading stopped and a message was shown on the downloading line that say: write to disk error.
After this my SD card became write protected and I couldn't delete or download any thing to it.
I tried several ways and programs to remove the write protection from my SD card but I couldn't.
I also cheked my SD adaptor and it was unlocked. I couldn't delete or format the memory even on my computer.
Please help me with my problem.
Thanks...

some sd cards(microsd too) have a hardware switch ont hem that write protects them, chek that, if it's locked then unlock it, and just to be sure, back up the contents to your computer and format the card in your phone, then copy the data over thru usb to ensure the computer doesn't format it(depending on your OS it might)

Hey guys..
Thanks for your replay, I tried mini tool partition wizard and when insert my SD card and choose it to operate on it all the options become in gray color and I can't select any option. Even when my SD card partitions are shown with the rest of my computer partitions.
I also tried to format my memo from non android phone (Nokia phone)..but I couldn't because the format option don't shows when I insert the card.
Also I cant delete any thing from it and it says disk is write protected or disk is read only.

When it greys out, just choose 'create new partition', enter the total volume and then apply the changes...simple as that, make sure to apply every change, it should be on the left pane topmost options..let me know if you're stuck

sd card write problem

hi yesterday I unexpectedly remove sd card (samsung) without unmounting from htc u11 now I can not write to it. can not format the sd card from phone as well from pc. recently I updated my htc u11 to oreo also. I dont know is it because of unexpectedly remove of sd card or oreo update because I dont remember that after oreo update I use(means download something) my sd card. If anyone have the solution thanx in advance.
How old was sd card? Could be just bad luck, and card died, happen to me. And what pc - win version you tried formated? It should let you do it whitout any problems.
If the external sd card was being written to at the time it was disconnected then it will be broken. If it wasn't then try to recover it using a pc.
The oreo update won't have changed anything with the external sd card so you can rule that out.
Sometimes, when you pull out the memory card unexpectedly (also the pen drives or even memory sticks on pc) you can lock the card. It denies to write on it. This happens due to the chip controller of the memory card. The only solution is to repair it on PC with special software tools from manufacturer or from russian/chinese/vietnamese forums which can reset that lock 'flag'. That sw contains drivers to raw access the chip controller.

Hi,
Try to format your SD Card using this tool "MiniTool Partition" on Windows.
https://www.partitionwizard.com/
Windows doesn't do the right job to format SD Cards.

thanx for your reply I use it(minitool partition) and also easeus but no one work. They show that your disk is formated but when I check in explorer data is still there. Is there any other software or method to format.

Try to search something like that: 'mass production utility', usually under this name you can find utilities to access the chips. It is time consuming to find what chip/controller your card use and find an utility which can access that chip since samsung do not publish such a tool...
You can try ChipGenius or another sw to find details, you may digg in sites like 'http://www.flashdrive-repair.com' to find a way of repair.
