Wifi calling use more battery? - HTC One S

In an area with poor signal will wifi calling generally consume more battery or would it be better to keep it off when signal is down to 1-3 bars?

Battery consumption on Wifi vs 3G Data Connection

Any expert can tell me why 3G Data Connection consumes more battery than Wifi?
I have done experiment on turning on just:
1. Wifi
2. 3G Data connection
All other functions/apps stay the same.
1. lasted over 20 hours with minimal usage
2. lasted no more than 13 hours with minimal usage.
Any expert has an explanation?
I'm not an expert, but I've observed the same thing that you have, 3G uses more power than WiFi, both at idle and "in use" (such as streaming music).
On my HTC Hero, using WiFi, 1%/hour idle, approx 2.5-3%/hr "in use". With 3G, approx 4%/hour idle, 10-15%/hour "in use".
It takes more power to boost up your transmit signal from your phone to reach the cell tower 2 miles away compared to the wifi hotspot 5 meters away?

thanks
yeah, because i was thinking when using wifi, there is an extra device running.
but when on 3G data, shouldn't it be the same thing as the normal phone signal?
so why would 3G data consume more battery than wifi? thats what is puzzling me.

3G (UMTS) and 2G (GSM) are usually implemented as two different subsytems. 3 years ago, when I was working with their designs, devices actually had 2 antennas internally, because of optimsation for different frequencies.

i am no technical person but I am guessing .. that means when I turn on 3G data, I am using something that is NOT related to the original phone signal connection and that is why it consumes battery on top of the original phone signal connection?
and so happens the UMTS consumes more battery than Wifi too?
Wifi just sucks more battery in general

but in fact, the phone operates under wifi is more battery saving than operating under 3G connection...

[Q] more battery drain with wifi than 3G ?

Hello,
there are many threads and posts related to battery drain on our smartphones.
But is it a rule that wifi takes always more battery drain than 3G ?
Does the over air communication physically need more energy for Wifi than 3G GSM ? Or is it just a driver issue ?
actually wifi takes less power than 3g didn't really look up why but it is more energy efficient. If wifi is available I would defiantly use it over 3g because its greeter for the battery and faster.

Is there a way to conserve battery when you have weak signal?

I stay in a hotel room often without free wifi. Most of the rooms I get 1-2 bars, occasionally 3. A decent amount of the time I get no 4g and sometimes signal is so weak no internet at all. I notice this destroys my battery life. Is there someway to lower the extra strain on the battery when I know I will have a weak signal anyway without using airplane mode? I wanna lower the power being used by my phone to search for stronger signal while still being able to receive texts and calls. Would prefer to keep 3G on as well when it works.
On a related note, are there any products I can buy to boost my signal that work? And is there a rom or roms that are known to have great signal strength compared to the rest out right now? Thanks for any help.

You should be fine disabling Mobile Data... You should get texts just fine and use the WiFi for all data purposes.
Im not using the wifi ever unless really important to get it, $15 everyday is too much. So i am trying to rely on mobile data.
Go download the free app "Phone Info", it will allow you to shut off 4G, shutting off 4G stops it from searching and draining your battery.
Once installed, click "Device Information" and scroll about half way down and change the drop box from "LTE/CDMA/EvDo" to "CDMA only"
Hope this helps!
I use phone info already, 3g over 4g definitely helps, but am I wrong in assuming that the phone is still destroying battery when the signal is weak even with 4g off?

Battery Drain when no(low) signal

Hey guys,
I notice that my S3 battery is drained when I'm at work, when my network signal is limited. It only drains when I'm in the part of the building that has poor signal reception, or if I'm at a certain restaurant I frequent where reception is spotty. I assume it is because the phone is fighting to hang on to the little signal it has... but I'd prefer to keep my battery until I actually can use the phone.
Is there a way to help alleviate this without having to turn the network off? Like increase the amount of time between network scans?
I have root.
Thanks

[Q] Why 3g use more battery drain 2g

Can we use only 3g internet not video call service so that we can save battery ???

3G has a higher battery drain, however, it actually uses less Watts per downloaded Kilobyte compared to 2G. 3G is much better for heavy data usage, and will not use much more battery if the 3G signal is strong. If the signal is poor or fluctuating, however, it may drain your battery as much as twice as fast compared to 2G. Talk time is considerably less than 2G, however, standby drain is about the same. Overall, under typical conditions in suburban areas, you should expect about 2/3 of the 2G battery life.
