Hello,
there are many threads and posts related to battery drain on our smartphones.
But is it a rule that wifi takes always more battery drain than 3G ?
Does the over air communication physically need more energy for Wifi than 3G GSM ? Or is it just a driver issue ?
actually wifi takes less power than 3g didn't really look up why but it is more energy efficient. If wifi is available I would defiantly use it over 3g because its greeter for the battery and faster.

Any expert can tell me why 3G Data Connection consumes more battery than Wifi?
I have done experiment on turning on just:
1. Wifi
2. 3G Data connection
All other functions/apps stay the same.
1. lasted over 20 hours with minimal usage
2. lasted no more than 13 hours with minimal usage.
Any expert has an explanation?
I'm not an expert, but I've observed the same thing that you have, 3G uses more power than WiFi, both at idle and "in use" (such as streaming music).
On my HTC Hero, using WiFi, 1%/hour idle, approx 2.5-3%/hr "in use". With 3G, approx 4%/hour idle, 10-15%/hour "in use".
It takes more power to boost up your transmit signal from your phone to reach the cell tower 2 miles away compared to the wifi hotspot 5 meters away?

thanks
yeah, because i was thinking when using wifi, there is an extra device running.
but when on 3G data, shouldn't it be the same thing as the normal phone signal?
so why would 3G data consume more battery than wifi? thats what is puzzling me.

3G (UMTS) and 2G (GSM) are usually implemented as two different subsytems. 3 years ago, when I was working with their designs, devices actually had 2 antennas internally, because of optimsation for different frequencies.

i am no technical person but I am guessing .. that means when I turn on 3G data, I am using something that is NOT related to the original phone signal connection and that is why it consumes battery on top of the original phone signal connection?
and so happens the UMTS consumes more battery than Wifi too?
Wifi just sucks more battery in general

but in fact, the phone operates under wifi is more battery saving than operating under 3G connection...
my battery doesnt stand one day with me.. when i charge it and it is 90% i shut down the phone open it again and it is 99%..what is this is there a problem with it .should i change it ??
another thing sometimes my phone has no network and after one day the network come back .what the problem ..is it a radio problem?
Usually battery drain is due to visual. u can check what was hogging your battery and tell us what u see.
After flashing to cm7 i also notice that my battery stopped charging at 90% but then it charged to 100% the next time.
About your network, does it happen often with your phone? Try some test with the same network on different phone before changing it.
At times i too have no signal, my family uses the same network and it happened to all of us, so we conclude that it has got to do with our telco.

1. Battery-life depends on numerous factors. With experience, major ones include
i) ROM in question
ii) Telecom signal strength
iii) Wifi or 3G usage
iv) Screen-on time
v) Some rogue apps
vi) Music all-day?
vii) Do you "game" all the time?
viii) Are you aware Android as an OS isn't that nice on battery juice?
A battery change should appear somewhere at the end of an exhaustive investigative list.
From your no network saga, I'd readily assume it's the poor signal strength that's mostly killing your battery.

About my network ..This thing happens with my phone only. When iam with my friends sometimes my phone has no signal and they have and this thing last for a day or two but after that it catshes signal in the same place

My rom is endymion .signal strength is normal but sometimes there is no signal and a day or two as i said i dont use wifi or 3g to much as iam always on 2g .dont have too many apps.no games.what is battery juice ?and what is the relation between poor signal and killing bettery?

If you are in poor signal area or worse right on the edge of a 3g reception, then the phone must work constantly attempting to hold on to a signal which in turn causes considerably battery outage, or off on the edge of 3g, must constantly change radios
Swyped from my Desire S using XDA Premium

what do you think? which connection is more battery friendly?
wifi of mobile data?

I think Mobile Data...because the Radio of the phone is already turned on either ways..uing Data or not, and when using Data, I guess it only causes a slight increase in battery consumption.
On the other hand, WiFi is an entirely different hardware component that will need its own battery consumption share.
So both Radio and WiFi being On, one for regular cellular connectivity, and the other to provide Internet connectivity, that will surely increase battery consumption.

Wifi uses less battery. Mobile data uses alot more battery because your phone always has to search for a better/stronger connection ( that's where the option to only use 2g comes it). Also wifi sends and receives data faster which lets your phone take breaks (idle) between pushing and receiving data. Mobile data slower speeds takes shorter breaks and always has to check in with the network (fast dormancy is a new tweak to reduce that check in frequency, included in newer roms to save battery).
If you are using GPSR (Mobile Connection) it will cost less battery than WiFi, I Think...
GPRS cost less battery than wifi
and 3g cost much more.
and the weaker the signal is,the more battey is cost.

Hi,
I was thinking which consumes less power on a Note 10.1
Wifi or 3G?
Anyone got any info on this?
plz google it... it can affect all gadgets pertaining to ur question.

According to wikipedia typical power usage for wifi would be 32mw and typical power usage for 3G would be 500mw.
That would make wifi about 15x more efficient.
Ofcourse there are many more variables like howmuch processing power is required to handle the connection and the distance between you and the accesspoint. But considering wifi is faster and needs less transfer time to finish sending data and considering the above I reckon you should leave wifi on to increase your battery life.
I do feel that wifi is much more battery saving than 3g too. hope this help
3G/4G is a power hog as long as its on, whether you are downloading data or not.
WiFi is MUCH more efficient.
And I'm talking at LEAST 50% more efficient.
Can we use only 3g internet not video call service so that we can save battery ???

3G has a higher battery drain, however, it actually uses less Watts per downloaded Kilobyte compared to 2G. 3G is much better for heavy data usage, and will not use much more battery if the 3G signal is strong. If the signal is poor or fluctuating, however, it may drain your battery as much as twice as fast compared to 2G. Talk time is considerably less than 2G, however, standby drain is about the same. Overall, under typical conditions in suburban areas, you should expect about 2/3 of the 2G battery life.
