Guys post your battery temp during normal use,gaming,heavy app use plz..m facing heating issues and want to compare with other Xperia L's
This is during my normal use with 3G which heats upto 40 sometimes

Mine goes 42 degrees with gaming like FIFA12 etc and in 3G use it stays around 35-40 and with wifi 34-38..are this temperatures normal?

I cannot said what the temperature is when I use 3G as my data package is out for this month already, but I think the temperatures provided by you are normal. Like when you are playing Fifa the CPU is cooler than mine. I think they are normal. Most of modern phone's have heating issue during playing.

Hmm but i rarely play games ..also sometimes temperatures rises during charging period with moderate use while charging and battery temperature reaches 43 degrees..is this harmful? Well i think its harmful..

Well, don't think so. My phone also heats up during charging when I use it. I'm not sure if this work or not but you of course when you wan't can enable option that Nexus 4 has. It's like when a phone reach certain temperature a cpu/gpu clock is lower to prevent battery overheated.
I don't have it enable as mostly I don't play or do anything more stressful that will make phone hot.

dude you have a fit right...oh you sold it, still that device was about half as powerful okay 1/3 rd yet the battery temp with 0 activity and mostly in deep sleep is at 30 C.
now xperia L is way more powerful so should get a tad bit hotter too right(of course that's based on CPU activity) try it put is down for say two hours no charging , no nothing so that in deep sleep(lowest freq) also no 3g(that has its own daemon that eats cpu power i.e. causes cpu to work and hence battery drain and heat). wifi is okay(stable connection hence minimal cpu usage as no reconnections).
now check yor battery temp should be around 35C so your device is fine.
all this is based on stock heat and power management cant comment on custom kernels.

if you are on a custom kernel the best practice is to uv and NOT oc also change the governor to Interactive since thats far better than performance.(spimply put performance goes to top cpu freq even when not required and slowly scales down while interactive scales up fast and down fast at user touch events) for heating and basic phone wear and tear purposes.
and one of the main reason along with more ram(i mean lower bloat hence more free ram) that i want a cyanogen mod ROM.

Qualcomm makes the MSM8230 chip that you see in L, there are 4 different "types" based on how it meets their quality standards. These are Slow, Nominal and Fast (Faster is on Higher end chips like APQ8064). The main difference IIRC between these types is how stable each can handle undervolting. CPUs that are "Fast" for example come pre-configured at a lower nominal voltage than a "Nominal" type CPU, and more so than a "Slow" type. IIRC, there's like only a -50mV difference between Fast and Slow out of the box, however Fast CPUs should be able to handle lower voltages than Slow-type.
This may explain why some people complain higher temp than others on account of same tasks. Although there can be other reasons. I'm not quite sure.
To find out what binned CPU you have, I recommend the following:
YOU MUST BE ROOTED! And installed busybox
1) Install Terminal Emulator
2) Reboot your phone
3) Open Terminal Emulator, and type:
su
dmesg | grep PVS
(if you don't see anything, try it.immediately after fresh reboot)
For example I've fast binned cpu
So basically, far as I understand I got Fast CPU which isn't going to be as hot as the Slow type due to lower voltage ?

then go for ondemand the performance might be a tad bit slower than preformance governor but your battery life should be better along with the heating...also no oc.

My sensation is currently overclocked at 1.73ghz, and according to a temperature widget I have it seems to hover between 25-45 degrees. I can only find the one temperature reading, so I think this will be the battery temp. I've set setCPU up to run at 1.73ghz below 35 degrees, then come down to 1.5ghz above it. If it gets to 50 degrees, it's then set to drop to absolute minimum and play a warning sound. I've also set it to drop to minimum when the screen is off to save power if the phone doesn't sleep, and to not exceed 1.2ghz when on charge or during a call. None of them are fixed, they're set to intellidemand or whatever it's called.
Do these settings sound reasonable? What sort of temps would be deemed as normal? I don't want to shorten the life of the phone if I can help it.
Also, if this temperature reading is just for the battery, what would I need to monitor CPU temperature too? Is there an app available so I can actually log the temps to see what happens when playing games, etc?

Why do you need these over clock speeds? They will only ultimately increase temp, burn excessive battery and reduce the life span of your device.
Use common sense, these speeds are only worth using for bench mark tests
Personally anything above 43 is to hot for my device, although not same as yours, you can use set CPU to throttle down at this temp

I mainly wanted to overclock since the normal sensation was underclocked in the first place, the sensation xe runs at 1.5ghz and the CPU is the same. So I wanted at least that. What I'm wanting to do now is find how quick it can be before it starts running too hot. Just wondering what's considered too hot in the first place.

My web browsing is much better (faster and smoother) at higher clockspeeds and performance governor. So that's why I run higher speeds. I use my phone for internet stuff more than anything else.

Mine seemed smoother too, for normal use and for my emulators. I found a problem though, setCPU wouldn't let the phone sleep so my battery went from 85% to dead overnight! It also seemed a little unstable even when turned back down to 1.53ghz, so I've uninstalled it and it's now running 1.53ghz just from the kernel. Runs perfectly now and battery life is back to normal. No noticeable difference in performance going from 1.73ghz down to 1.53ghz either, but now the battery temp seems to top out at 35-40 degrees or so, so about 5-10 degrees less than when it was set higher. I'll still give that app a go though so it can monitor and log temps while I'm playing games, etc.

UV is undervolt, which means running the device with less voltage (electricity). Uses less juice, battery lasts longer, and doesn't run as hot.
Depending on what you do with the device and how it's implemented the results could range from awesome battery savings without a reduction in performance to brownouts and having the processor work harder to get the same job done.
If you do a lot of processor intensive stuff ( resource heavy games, for example ) undervolting becomes a harder thing to take advantage of because the processor has to work harder when it gets maxed out.
The fact that tbalden lifted the artificially low 1.2 clock speed and bumped it up to it's rated 1.5 offsets that somewhat.
For most people undervolting is a godsend, because they don't miss that top % of maxed out processor performance.
Also, the greater range of speeds allows you to regulate the speeds of the device using apps (setcpu maybe) which can't set speeds outside of the range the kernel allows.
Tbalden got into what I was trying to before my crazy work schedule hit, and he is doing a whole lot for this device - now I'll be following the trail he's blazing instead of the other way around - win for the MT4GS community when people have time to make fun stuff like this for us to play with.
Haven't had the chance to read up on what he's done with it other then seeing it was there, so this is some general info to get you started with, there's a lot more to be said and I'm sure others will swing by and add to this description.

Slight is slightly undervolted, meaning it saves less on battery
Middle is around 5% undervolted, meaning around 5% saving in battery drainage
Extremely is 8%
Depending on the quality of your cpu material, it can work on your CPU well, or if it is made of a silicium chip that is less clean then your CPU will say voltage is too low, and phone might reboot. So depending on your device it may or may not work out.
UVing the cpu means no performance decrease. You should find out which kernel is best for your device. Safe is to go from Slight to Middle and then to Extreme if the Middle works out well. If you have reboots, fall back this way: Extreme --> Middle --> Slight
Also, if you dont want to use the Overclock frequency range, use SetCPU or an alternative cpu tool to cap it to your like.

And I noticed. My battery. Last way longer then before . Even though. I set the main profile of the set cpu to 1.5 hz max. 1.0 hz min. Wich makes the phone run as. My loptop. . Thank u developers

I just installed Titan Kernel (over ThiaiZO3D V2.7.1) and i'm feeling my O3D a little more hot than usual.
The temperature now is 36.8 c / 98.2 f.
Sometimes it gets to 40 c +.
What is the normal temperature for this cellphone?

without using the phone too much mine usually is below 30ºc (rushdroid @ 1.2ghz), currently it's at 25.6ºc . but i've seen it go high as 42ºc but usually only when gaming...
Dont worry about it. The phone will shut off when it gets too hot.

I've seen mine reach up to 42 c when gaming. When idle, it should be around 26 c. Light - Medium use can get up to 36 c.
The max temp I've had is about 46 whilst charging and gaming with the cpu maxed at 1.4ghz with apps in background and i coudnt get it any higher, tried too though.
Btw that is only battery temp anyway isn't it, the cpu may be a bit cooler.

Just remember that even if your phone runs fine at a higher temperature, it will reduce the life of what ever is running at a high temp.
My HOX running on 4.2.2 Sense 5 stock rom is having heat issues i believe i dont know if its normal
PS default Kernel (still cant get Beastmode,god knows why)
i use "ondemand" as my governor and "noop" as my scheduler with set cpu
i also have trickster mod installed but i use it only for monitoring temp and on what frequency is the cpu running!
when its idle temp is temp of cpu is 35 degrees Celsius and battery 26 degrees Celsius
whenever I am using my phone for internet for benchmarks etc CPU is 40 degrees Celsius and battery is at around 32 degrees Celsius
the phone feels ok
but whenever i start any game no matter how simple it maybe (this applies for a wide spectrum of games ranging from * ball pool to demanding games like Asphalt 8) i notice my backside especially region around my camera getting warmer (now its not very hot but you can tell the difference)
at that time the reading shown is CPU is 45 degrees Celsius and battery becomes 36 degrees Celsius
PS the phone never restarts the game doesn't crash it runs smoothly
is it normal!?
i have read on web that lithium polymer batteries should be kept below 35 degrees Celsius for optimum life and performance
i dot have any background apps running whem i am gaming and the rise is observed in a few minutes or so i usually play a game for max 15 mins after that everything cools down!
this rise is also observed during taking back up through Twrp!
Those temps seem totally normal. Yes, higher temperatures are stressful to Li ion batteries, and hasten capacity loss. But to some extent, you need to try not to worry about it, and enjoy the phone for what it is.
While I don't game much, I do notice the phone getting warm while using Navigation, Netflix, etc. I've had my EVITA since just after release in May 2012, and I haven't noticed any loss in battery life.

Haven't used SetCPU in a while, but pretty sure if the option appears in SetCPU, its supported by the kernel. Depending on what kernel you have installed, more or less governor options will be visible.
Governor seems like a trial and error type of choice. It depends on how you use your phone, and not everyone will get the same results.
Lol those temps are nothing, I've had my battery up to 66° Celsius.

Yep, 66° battery temp. That isn't a normal operating temperature though, that was while my phone was rendering a huge picsphere image from the Focal camera.
There are safeguards in place in case the phone does reach a temperature that would damage the phone. The phone will first warn you it's getting hot by flashing the led red and green, if it continues to heat up it will shut down.

I have been able to fix quite a bit of thermal throttling experienced in multiple benchmark runs by tweaking with the thermal-engine configuration file. With just a few changes and with the copper shim mod I can now run geekbench for as many five times with almost no drop in score. After that I get no thermal throttling in single core but I have it setup to disable two cores after it hits 55C CPU temp in core 4 and 7. I use CPU Z to see actual CPU temp from the sensor readings. Even after 8 Geekbench runs the two cores are still running at full speed and the phone is registering 44C. It's warm but not hot by any means.
If anyone is interested in playing around with it just look for the file in \System\etc\thermal-engine-8994.conf
Most of it is just two adjustments. One for Max temperature at which it will throttle and the one below is the temperature at which throttling stops.

Without your copper shim mod have you found any better but safe values we can try?
At least no thermal throttle until 55 celsiius
It should be safe without the copper shim. The thermal pad it comes with works pretty well. It will still thermal throttle to whatever temperature you set it at so it won't cause any harm.
I've set the Big cluster to a max of 65C and a single A57 core to up to 71C and haven't had any problems yet. I used to get horrible performance with PPSSPP emulator. When running Tony Hawk Project 8 in PPSSPP after 30 seconds of gameplay It used to drop to 6fps and now it can sustain over 20fps after reaching 71C on a single A57 core. I only saw a maximum battery temperature of 40C and the device wasn't noticeably warmer than it was with the default thermal settings.

Well yes. Except that's the little cluster and they don't get that hot normally. It's the big cluster that needs to be modified. I also tuned my display thermals so the screen wouldn't get so dim when the phone gets warm. Here you can look over my configuration if you want.

your settings somehow "unlocked" my phones cpu. lol in geekbench I found an increase of performance of 200 points in multicore from 4020 I had before maximum , now nearly 4300 .It is impressive. also if I run 6-7 geekbench in a row there is a decrease everytime ex 4200 4050 3900 3600..... but temperature stays 45 degree.
I will test them more later.

Thanks for sharing your results. That's the highest multi core score I've seen on our phones. I never gotten that high of a multi core score. Glad to help. My configuration also tweaked the battery thermal settings so now you should see faster charge times as well. The default charge rates had really conservative thermal settings and the high speed charge would drop after a while but now it will 2.2 to 2.4 amp charge through the whole charge.

Yes indeed i saw a difference in chargin thanks for your effort in the configuration. I am not very fond of benchmarks but i run some in my devices after magor changes (firmware....). This device should have been speedier because of the full hd snapdragon 810 combination. I wonder if we delete the thermal config is the device gonna be speedier? I am waiting for 5.1.1 hoping for smoother rom. Lets hope soneone unlocks the bootloader!!!! I took my precautions disabling MLT lol

My phone gets really hot with those settings
I overwrote the original one ^^ has someone made a backup and can share it with me.?

When you apply the settings you need to give time to the phone to 'absorve' them.

I havent noticed higher tdmperature of 45 celsius.

This device should have been speedier because of the full hd snapdragon 810 combination. I wonder if we delete the thermal config is the device gonna be speedier? I am waiting for 5.1.1 hoping for smoother rom. Lets hope soneone unlocks the bootloader!!!! I took my precautions disabling MLT lol

I'm not sure what would happen if you just deleted the file. Maybe it'll revert to some default, or perhaps it won't thermal throttle at all which would result in auto shut off when it overheats. Probably not worth risking it without a custom recovery in case it doesn't boot.
I have notice that my phone is way quicker now. It was fast before but now it's a beast when I push it hard. Also things like PPSSPP emulator was useless with the default thermal throttling now it can beat my Tegra note 7 with 4 A15 cores at 2.1ghz at it.

The folder was deleted for some odd reason. I was able to restore it so the link should work now. Let me know how it works out for you.
A few questions about these settings.
-At the top where you have SS-Little_Cluster_management and SS-Big_Cluster_management is the set point the shutdown temp for the entire cluster?
-I think this one is self explanatory by the action listed but towards the middle where CPUx_MONITOR for each core is, is the threshold the temperature at which the entire phone shuts down?
-I'm not sure I am noticing the difference between SS-CPUx and CPU_HOTPLUG_MONITOR. Could you explain these?

I don't want to assume I know everything about this. Everything I know about the thermal configuration file I learned from seeing others modify the LG G3 thermal config file. I also learned some by experimenting with my G Flex 2.
In my understanding SS-Little_Cluster_management and SS-Big_Cluster_management is the temperature at which the Cluster will thermal throttle when all cores in the cluster are being used at once. From what I've seen anything with "action_type 10000" means thermal throttle. The closest thing I can think off that works like that is how Intel I5 and I7 will limit turbo speed when more than one core is being used. Except in our case this is to prevent higher speeds when it reaches a certain temperature. So lets say your phone is running some heavy multithreaded app now it's going to follow the rules set in Cluster_management. The default Big Cluster temperature is set to start slowing things down when temperature reaches 48C and to not go back to full speed until the temperature drops down to 38C. One thing I find interesting is that at about 48C cluster temperatures was about where the Big cores would drop to a max of 1.5 ghz. So I'm just guessing that this setting may play a big part on the big cores max speed.
[CPUx_MONITOR] seems to shutdown the phone when the core reaches a certain temperature threshold of 120 C and I assume will not allow it to turn back on until it drops below 115C.
[SS-CPUx] on a big core seems to slow the specific core down when it reaches a temperature threshold of 85C and to not allow it to go to full speed until it drops below 55C. However this rule can be overwritten by [CPUx_HOTPLUG_MONITOR] which can shut down a core even if it hasn't reached it's maximum temperature threshold.
[CPUx_HOTPLUG_MONITOR] just tells the specific core to turn off once it reaches the temperature threshold specified. On the default configuration core 4 and 7 are set to turn off when their temperature goes above 50C. After that core 5 turns off at 58C and even core 6 turns off at 61C. At which point only the small cores will remain on.
