Is nanodroid backup the same thing as a rom manager backup when you backup the current rom? How reliable are those backups? Is there a way to copy those backups to your computer just in case your phone totally dies?

yes these are the same optiions within ClockWorkMod Recovery.
A word of caution, NANDROID does not back up the kernel and modem, so if you flash a NANDROID to a device that has been updated with a new kernel you will be very sad panda.
As far as moving the NANDROID backup files to a PC, it is totally fine - they should be located in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup directory on your device.
Hey thanks for your reply. I got another question so How do I backup the kernel and modem do I have to use another software in adition to NANDROID? I would like to start playing with different roms but I need to know how to backup everything just in case everything dies on me. Also I'm running OCLF for the one click lag fix. I know a lot of people are having problem removing voodoo lag fix. I did not have any problem backing up mine with the OCLF on. Should I take that off before backing up form now on?

I think I may have gotten a little crazy with the deleting, however. Everything is running fine at this point other than when I try to change ring/notification settings. Trying to access things gives me a force close every time.
I'm guessing I deleted something crucial. Anybody know what it may have been and how I can go about fixing this and/or getting around the situation? Will a simple program such as ringdroid replace whatever I got rid of? Shold I just flash a custom ROM?

Let me add that I rooted with SuperOneClick, and used RootExplorer for ditching my bloatware. Hope that helps a little!

What did you remove? Ringtones are stored in /system/media/, do they just not show up when trying to set it, or does something else happens? Are you missing your stock ringtones, or just your custom ones?
When I go to settings>sound...selecting eithr phone ringtone or notification ringtone causes my force close.
I think maybe I deleted my system/media thinking it was the stock media player
Not that I'm too bummed about it. The stock rings are all just crappy versions of the "T-jingle".

Well, looks like you took a risk and it came back to bite you. Reflash your ROM and try again.
Well...there's where the problem lies. I've never flashed a ROM. I'm sure I can handle it....just never done it.
And if I do need to flash a new ROM anyways, I feel like I should just flash a custom ROM. The gingerclone looks pretty nice. Does this delete my original ROM all together in the process? Are custom ROMs free of bloat?
That will wipe everything, so you should make a backup beforehand. yes, custom roms are almost always free of bloat, GingerClonev2 is only 124MB, where the stock rom is over 200MB. There are a few issues we're still working out, but it's pretty steady. otherwise, Teddy is releasing an update to an older ROM sometime soon as well, so I'd be on the lookout for that.

If you have CWM, use the backup menu, which uses Nandroid to backup everything by dumping everything on your phone into images. This all dumps onto your SDcard in the clockworkmod folder.
You can't brick your phone using CWM, you can only do that using ODIN, and only if you're not following directions/being intentionally stupid

Yeah, copy the clockworkmod folder from your sdcard to your desktop, that'll copy everything off. I wouldn't suggest Rom Manager, many people have problems with that CWM. Look in the Dev forum for the CWM thread, and use that one.
In recovery mode, there should be a backup and restore menu. use the backup option, and then copy the clockworkmod folder from your sdcard to your desktop. that's your backup.
Okay. I plugged in my phone to the computer, and dragged a copy of the entire clockworkmod folder to my desktop.
Gingerclone is downloaded. Drag it to my SD? anywhere specific? or just on it?
On my desktop now is: folder/download, .recoverychecpoint(1KB), .salted_hash(1KB), .settings(1KB), and .settings2(1KB)

I lost rom manager/root explorer.
After clearing stuff out and rebooting...it rebooted to the original rom with none of my added apps.
Can't download anything either at this point.

Download manager keeps stopping and forces closed.
I reboot into recovery...and my options are:
reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete cache data
If I try to reinstall packages, I get" E: failed to open /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip(no such file or directory)
E: signature verification failed.
I'm in over my head now. Anyone out there maybe wanna help walk me thorough this on AIM or google chat or anything?

Edit: actually what it sounds like you did was something similiar to what i did with a samsung galaxy s i deleted a bunch of apps and the i did a data wipe and factory restore without flashing my custom firmware through cwm and when it factory resetted it was real buggy from all the missing apps so u will have to odin

I'm on a GSM Galaxy Nexus running CyanogenMod10 nightlies, and I'm noticing some lag, and so I wanted to wipe everything and flash again.
Not sure if that will help lol (noob) but I thought I'd try.
To wipe everything and keep my settings and stuff intact, what do I need to do? a nandroid? And what happened to the nandroid I made when flashing cm10? is that just stored as a recoverable file?

Nandroids are complete backups of your system, restoring a "laggy" system will end you up with the same laggy system, with no difference...
If you wanna get back your settings after a wipe, use Titanium Backup...though I advise against backing up system apps and data since restoring them usually gave ME force closes...
You can try wiping data, not sure if it will actually make the lag go away...
Or you could try scripts like the famous v6 supercharger memory management script (google it)...

If you did a nandroid backup before you flashed the version of the ROM that's laggy, restoring it may fix the problem, since it'll bring you back to before you flashed the ROM. (If you're doing nightlies, I'd do a nandroid before every update. Label it with the date and time you created it and save it off the phone [on a computer, laptop, USB drive, etc.])
Umm, not trying to sound like a d!ck, but you are running "nightlies" which aren't exactly known for stability. If you want your phone to run without any issues find a stable ROM and not one in nightlies. The lag you are describing is relatively common when using an unstable nightly version of a ROM as a daily driver, and if it is something you are not prepared to live with then I would always keep a "last known good" backup on your SD card...gives you a restore point with last known good settings which you can restore at any time.
I installed B145 with the kat 80b kernel and the v3 battery patch and everything looks good. I had to swipe as I was using build 81 before. Quite honestly, since I'm not running any synthetic benchmarks nor overclocking the proc, I'm hard pressed to find any difference in performance from EOS 3. Mind you, the buttery feel on this ROM (and EOS 3, for that matter) is day and night when compared to Asus's stock code. So if you're like me and waited this long to root your Transformer (I popped its cherry just a month ago, after having it for 1 year), don't be afraid to try this ROM... the best thing to have happenned to the og transformer.
One question I have is, what are you guys using to constantly restore your apps and/or settings after repeatedly flashing new ROMs? It's a pain in the neck having to reinstall all the apps and setting them up! Thank you and special thanks to Timduru and his minions This thing is awesome...

I use Titanium Backup, but I let Google install all my apps, then restore the data.
There are a few apps I have to install using Titanium (from Amazon) that I have to restore using Titanium. Those apps I have to tap the Install button and Done for each one.
I tried using the App Backup in the ROM Toolbox by Jrummy, but it did not restore all the data correctly (mainly thumb keyboard).
I also make nandroid backups using TWRP so I can quickly restore a working ROM without having to reinstall stuff if something goes south.
I also use Titanium Backup but with some reservations. If you're going to go back to the ROM you're running, you're much better off with a nandroid backup. TB is cool for a few reasons: batch backup/restore, system apps or just apps, etc... however you have to be careful with it.
- Make sure you always verify your backups (often). Never assume "they'll work", cause they most likely won't - that's a known issue that it fails to parse its own packages once in a while, so batch restores just lock up the entire operation and you have to forcibly kill it to start where it left off.
- Always keep a copy of the backups elsewhere than on the tablet
- Just because it backs up a system app or an app doesn't mean it can restore it, even on the same rom.
- Some stuff like contacts need to be exported then imported back especially if you're upgrading to another android version.
- System apps will almost always fail to install on another android version unless they were "hacked" to make them work.
So yeah it's a really good and powerful tool but to use with caution. Always redo full backups and verify them before you wipe/flash and always have a complete nandroid backup to restore in case of issues, like Frederuco said.
Edit: Once you're on Team EOS's roms, I dount think you have to do a full wipe anymore. I just wipe cache, dalvik and system, then flash the new rom, that way all my apps are still there. I only do a full reset if I experience issues after doing this, to make sure it's the rom and not apps, and to report to Tim from a fresh flash.
Thank you both. I'll give Titanium a try whenever I try another ROM. In the meantime I decided to go back to EOS3 build 81. I *really* don't like the new status bar on top. It specially bugs me when browsing the web since it's eating up screen real estate.

This is probably a known issue, but for those going back from EOS 4 to EOS 3: the directory /sdcard was copied to /sdcard/0 after installing EOS 4; so, when I restored EOS 3 from nandroid backup, the system wasn't responding as it should and some apps were very slow (I guess expecting to find their data under /sdcard). Copying /sdcard/0 back to /sdcard and rebooting made everything work much better. Thanks.

From what I've read this is an issue with CWM. I saw frederuco mention it on the EOS 4 thread.
I had the same problem, went from build 92 to preview 145 and Titanium Backup couldn't find anything. I was pulling my hair out until I saw his post
If you use TWRP 2.3.2.3 the /0 directory issue goes away.
Also, TWRP IMO is much better than any CWM to date.
Ok so I had a problem recently and found a solution which might help. I googled, looked in this and a bunch of other android forums and didn't find the solution I had, so maybe my way is not the best way to do it - but it solved my problem maybe it might help you.
When I flash a new rom with a different framework to the rom I'm currently on I take care to make a full TWRP back-up of my current system move that across to my PC, then proceed to wipe everything on my phone, data, system, factory reset and numerous cache and dalvik wipes. (I use the Awesome scripts superwipe and kernel cleaners which do the trick really well).
Anyway recently I installed a rom which really didn't work for me, so i wanted to get back to where I was before I installed it. I booted into TWRP cleaned the data, system factory reset wiped the caches. I mount my PC move my nandroid across to my SDcard and go to restore. But of course TWRP looks in the restore folder for the backup and I have wiped this so the file structure does not exist.
So after telling myself what an idiot I was for not remembering what the file system was, here's what I did:
1 - Stopped panicking!
2 - Ran the back-up utility in TWRP - this recreates the file structure for the back-ups and places a back-up of your empty system in the folder
3 - Move the original full back-up I placed in the empty SDcard into the file system next to the empty back-up I'd just created
4 - Go to restore and the full back-up is there. Swiped to restore it and my One S is back to it's old self
Lessons learnt: Don't panic - there is an answer. Just think about it.

Or you could just copy the whole twrp folder to your hdd. thats what I do anyway and restore without a problem.
Yep that would have prevented me ending up in that predicament for sure.
So would not flashing roms. The point of the post is really about what to do if you find yourself in that situation and the value of keeping a cool head and thinking through a solution rationally, using your own resources.
The way I see it is: it's my mess I got into it, how am I going to solve it....

Lost my Backup
Good advice which I'm trying to follow but my TWRP Recovery cannot see the TWRP ROM Backups that I created with ROM Customizer which ROM Customizer has placed in the folder
/data/media/0/TWRP/Backups/4df1bd936aae7f4b
but when my Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300 is in Recovery Mode it is obviously looking somewhere else........I just can't figure out where because then I can just move the backup to where ?Recovery Mode is looking.

Plz HELP!!!
ACtually im in deep deep trouble please i would be really grateful to the person who helps me. OK so last night i flashed cyanogen mod10 on my htc one x and when i did everything booted the boot.img and all i factory reseted from cm10 because it gave me the error that unfortunately android.process.phone has stopped nevertheless now everythings gone and no supersu root file is gone which is obvious that i dont have root now. Plz tell me how to go back to my factory settings with htc sense on it now i just want my phone back, i did another factory reset wiping off the rom but it says no OS installed and it gets stuck on htc quitly brilliant screen plz plz plz plz help me any one plz.

1. wrong forum, if you have a one x device
2. calm down
3. relock your bootloader (fastboot oem lock)
4. download and run latest ruu for your phone (search for a suitable one for your cid and carrier if you are branded)
5. you also can flash a custom sense based rom, which gives you sense back (viper one s or trickdroid or android revolution hd)
6. if you want to flash one of these,dont forget to flash the boot.img too
7. before flashing a rom, wipe system, data and cache 3xtimes to be sure you do a clean install

Thanks Man, been stuck in TWRP for about two hours now, thought I soft bricked my Droid Dna forever. I had a backup, and adb pushed it to the /sdcard directory, but it wouldn't show up in the restore section. This empty-backup method worked fine. Thanks, you saved me $400.:good:

I'd just like to say a MASSIVE THANK YOU for this post! I had a major issue and thought I'd lost my 1-day old HTC One (M7). I wasn't so much panicking as I knew i'd find a way, but a cold sweat had started to break!
The biggest lesson I can take from this is simply this... MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP YOUR ORIGINAL ROM BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING! It's such an obvious thing, but without this simple step, I'd be in trouble right now as HTC haven't an RUU for my specific device yet (plus I'm on a Mac, making running .exe files more painful still)
What had happened was that as a result of a corporate email policy, I had to encrypt my device. I did this after flashing to a new ROM. Unfortunately after I had done so, the new ROM wasn't playing nicely with Exchange (using native HTC Mail app). Of course the issue here is that when you so into TWRP, you can't see the files to restore (because TWRP is opened before the device asks you for the passcode to decrypt... another learning!). To remove the encryption, I had no choice but to do a full format of the device, so I was basically left with a brick
Anyway, once again, thank you for this post, you just saved me AU$700!

1. Wipe: data factory reset/cache/ delvic
Wipe system (but not sure which one(s) cause I was used to cwm and it looks diff in twrp
2. Flash the Rom that the nanbu is based from
3. Flash the nanbu
4 reboot
It's this the correct way to restore a nanbu from a diff or upgraded rom?
So I had to do a complete restore of my default Samsung Note 2 Sprint L900 firmware after an unsuccessful Rom flash of Goodness Noteworthy 1.8.1 (numerous flashes and it wouldn't boot up past opening war video, just went to black screen and hung endlessly)
-OK so I then got back to root and installed TWRP 2.6 and I had already had several backup ROMS I saved to my computer. So I placed Goodness Noteworthy 1.7 in my backup folder in TWRP on my sdcard. I then reboot into TWRP recovery and go to restore and I can't see anything there. I have the sdcard mounted and checked and after clicking the restore button I'm not seeing anything. ? When I click install it see's everything on my sdcard ? I don't get it. What am I doing wrong.

Solved.. Copied my backup stock ROM from the TWRP folder on the phone and placed it on the SDcard, then I placed my Goodness Noteworthy 1.7 backup rom I had that I had on my computer and copied and placed that on the SDcard in the TWRP folder next to the Stock Rom backup I made. Booted back into recovery and clicked RESTORE and I was able to see both the backup rom and the Goodness Noteworthy ROM. I then wiped and did a restore and I'm back in business.

Solved.. Hei guys,
Please help!!!! I tried to install MaximusHD 10.0.0 | JB 4.2.2 | Sense 5.0 on my HTC One s,i got storage issue. Now my sd card is just 48MB. I have installed TWRP v2.6.3.0 and i did backup before flashing room. I decided to do factory restore by TWRP and wiped OS from MY device.Now when i do backup i get failed error: not enough free space on storage. Total size of all data 203MB, available space 48 MB.I see my sd card on pc through TWRP, but i cannot make backup and even put any new rom into my sd card to flash it because of 48MB...Is it any chance to get back any OS on my HTC One s....?

(if the rom you were previously on had a different Boot.img you will need to fastboot your boot.img) In the backup
Assumes you are not trying to restore a backup to 2.15 if you were just on 2.16. You will need to RUU + factory reset/clear storage for that.
I'm sry not sure what "RUU" means... Probably will remember once u tell me I'm sure. But Ya I kinda just winged it, didn't flash the Rom to do the NanBU and all went fine, which is odd cause on my S2 w cwm it out me in a boot loop and had to start over, but I think TWRP may be a diff setup when restoring nanbu's. But either way it's always nice to know and find a "step by step" guide to restoring NanBU's from previous / updated / or different ROMs. For noobs that was one of the confusing things to do due to lack of that info in threads or utube vids out there.
Got a question. I've made my backup files but restore shows nothing but storage... No files to chose, no more options to restore. Is it normal?

1 - Stopped panicking!
2 - Ran the back-up utility in TWRP - this recreates the file structure for the back-ups and places a back-up of your empty system in the folder
3 - Move the original full back-up I placed in the empty SDcard into the file system next to the empty back-up I'd just created
4 - Go to restore and the full back-up is there. Swiped to restore it and my One S is back to it's old self
Lessons learnt: Don't panic - there is an answer. Just think about it.
