[Q] What's the best way to do a full backup?

Hello everyone,
I'd like to know what's the best way to do a full backup on my droid. I've read about using Nandroid to do it and so far this was the most complete step by step thread I've found about it: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/ha...step-step-no-adb-involved-noob-challenge.html but I've also seen other walkthroughs that seem much easier so I don't know if this is outdated or not, all the mirrors for the necessary files are broken so I don't know if I should follow it.
I've also read on another forum that you can just use ROM Manager and ClockworkMod recovery to make a backup but when I searched for the ROM Manager app on the market there were a lot of comments saying that the backup/restore functions didn't work properly so I'm not sure if that method is any good either.
Can anyone point me to a decent updated thread on how to use Nandroid or suggest any other methods?

do a nandroid backup, then copy the files over to your computer as an extra precaution. They are big files (mine was 512mb yesterday) so you might not want to keep it on your SD card.
Backup is easy to do, boot into HBOOT > Recovery and perform a backup!

The only problem I see with the nandroid backups is that I have to flash the custom recovery rom in order to get it running, is there some way to restore it in case I need to claim my warranty for some reason?

hello, thankyou in advance for your help. im running synergy rom on my verizon s3. First custom Rom, and first time unlocking my phone so im really new to this. anyway i made a backup using clockwork mod of my stock rom and all its settings using cwm recovery and saved it to my computer. i also made a backup of this synergy rom. i was trying to put the backup of synergy onto my computer however it always gets stuck at "calculating time to complete" or something similar. i noticed (while comparing my synergy backup to my stock) that my old stock backup only has clockworkmod>backup>stockrom but no blobs. my new backup gets stuck at copying the blobs(i tried everyfolder individually to see what the problem was), i can copy the backup folder fine. is this my computer or is there something else i should of done to make a complete copy of cwm backup Rom(programs needed, ect.?). i read on some forum that you needed some shell script but i didnt find that on here which i trust more than the other site. my other question is what would happen if i did do a recovery in cwm of my original stock rom without my blobs?

If I am not mistaken the blob saves all the information needed for the backup....then each individual backup saves any changes that have been made so in short it would not work without the blob its needed

Thankyou, i just needed to wait and the estimate time thing went away. its weird i dont know why the blobs didn't save the first time. this time they did after lk 10 mins of letting it run and another 20 to copy but thankyou for your help im not gunna risk bricking now the phone to half a rom. just one thing i did do a titanium backup of every original thing as well as a lookout security backup(good thing)..the only thing i really need from the original was my calendar and my to do list(bunch of doctors appointments and birthdays and anniversaries lol). is there anyway to restore those from titanium or lookout even?. im afraid to do a complete restore from titanium, (i didn't do it in the beggining i just set everything up manually), as im worried data from the same app of this rom and the last will interfere with each other.

[Q] Rooting and Backing up

Hello guys, this is going to be a long post andam very sorry about that. So, I got a Samsung galaxy note2 and I want to install the latest firmware which is version 4.3. Also, I'll like to try some android 4.4 custom rom. Am currently using version 4.1.2. Seriously, i've searched many threads without a satisfactory answer before restorting to start one. Before going on this adventure I'll like to do a complete backup of my original rom so i can go back to it anytime. I've decided to use nandroid for the full image backup (clockworkmod) and titanium for subsequent application and applications data backup. I know what these two apps do but I still have some questions.
1) What's is the safest way to root and unroot my device?
2) what files/apps do I need to do a nandroid and titanium backup and where do I get them?
3) can I keep this backups on my external sdcard, will I be able to access it from external sdcard on recovery mode incase my phone crashes?
4) someone said even after using the nandroid backup, I'll still have to Flash the kernel, what does this mean and how do I do that?
5) I plan using clockworkmod cos it sounds like a good idea. How do I get and use it.
Now I made a mess of myself asking all these questions. I'll still post it nonetheless cos I really need help with these questions or I wouldn't have asked. Thanks in advance guys. Once again, sorry for the long post.

1) any way that has been tested by the device users or devs, instructions should be followed clearly..
2) CWM needed for nandroid backup & Titanium Backup app is needed for data backups.
CWM would be available in dedicated threads for your device.
Titanium Backup app would be available in playstore

4) There are 2 ways AFAIK,
i. adb method to place the kernel inside the device
ii. Zip file flashing through CWM

I guess I'll have to download the kernel for my device before hand, so where do l keep It so CWM could use it.

for cwm check your device forum and you b=can take nandroid backup and if anything goes wrong you can backup with that
and for your question what all nandroid backup include here is the answer
nandroid backup includes
system partition
cache partition
data partition
boot partition
boot partition means kernel is included in boot partition only so kernel is also backed up in nandroid backup

if you restore nandroid backup you will automatically get stock kernel because nandroid backup includes boot partition where kernel is found
no need to flash kernel everytime
and you can keep kernel anywhere but if you simply download kernel image file or md5 file you an install it only with universal kernel flasher or adb you cant install that file directly in cwm
it must be a flashable zip to install in cwm to install it

Restore Nandroid to New Device [TWRP] Fails

Had to replace my M8 and was hoping I could just nandroid from a prior backup on the previous (identical).
I created the folder structure, and TWRP will run the restore process, but it fails at system each time.
Any suggestions? Looks like I can restore data fine. Using CleanROM.

[Update] Flashing CleanROM over seems to retain most apps/settings as long as I don't wipe first (assume this is the same as wiping/flashing CleanROM then restoring data only).

I did it but it was a while ago. I'm pretty sure you need to be on the same version of TWRP that you created the Nandroid with.

Thanks, good to know it's possible. I'm pretty sure I'm on the same version (when I installed recovery this time I just fastbooted the same image from the same adb directories I had setup last time).

I still fail at restoring system, but restoring data got me most of the way there (hopefully its stable! seems just fine so far).
Any suggestions I'd love to hear em (always thought this should be seamless but first time trying) and thanks for your feedback!

I don't quite understand why you would want to restore system. Flashing the rom is just as easy and much cleaner. There may be a problem with device ID from the old phone - really have no idea.
But going from one device to another I would flash the rom, restore data - done. You should have an identical phone.

Thanks! The only thing I lost by not restoring system are zip's/mods I flashed in twrp seperately, also Xposed framework settings (some didn't carry over). Thanks for the support!

OP, do you have Titanium Backup? It can extract from a Nandroid. Menu>Extract from Nandroid Backup. It takes a while, even if your backup isn't compressed, but it works just fine.
If you DON'T have Titanium, skip Google Play and just Google it. Buy it from his website. Costs you less, developer makes more money (Google doesn't get a cut) and you get a text file for a license. This is much easier than dealing with the license app. Just download the latest version whenever there's an update and stick it on your SD card/internal, and install it upon flashing a new ROM. Text license goes in the root of either. App will pick it up on first run. Real easy. And it can do a ton of other things, too.

I'm done it twice now on two separate Verizon refurbs to find the M8. It has always worked wonderfully for me. Saves a lot of time in setting back up. You do have to create a new TWRP folder though by doing in a quick backup on the new phone, the moving the backup into the new TWRP folder otherwise it won't see it. TWRP will create a new folder with a different set of numbers In your original TWRP folder. You just move it to that. I did it successfully with Viper one Rom twice now.

{help} making a flashable zip of my phone

Like the title says, I'm trying to figure out how to make a flashable zip of my phone with all my installed apps, app data and settings included.
I already have a nandroid backup and I already use titanium to back up my apps and app data, but I want to have a flashable zip as another backup incase all else fails.
I also want to be able to flash the zip on my wife's N5.
Can someone kindly walk me through the process or point me in the direction of a good walk through?

Don't you think that if it was something feasible and worthwhile to do many of the developers would have
created something like that already after all these years?
The developers have already developed an excellent way of backing up and restoring android phones using
TWRP and CWM nandroid backup and restore functions in their custom recovery mode which everyone uses.
If you don't trust nandroid backups why not do a simple test and make some nandroid backups and restore each
of them one at a time to see if you can find any kind of issues, problems or difficulties with your phone after you
have restored each of the backups one at a time.
Have you ever created a nandroid backup which did not restore properly or know of anyone who did?
Also why not do a bit of research here in these xda forums and threads to see if you can find any posts here by
people who are having any problems, issues or difficulties using or restoring their nandroid backups.

I trust in my nandroid backups. The main reason I want to create a flashable zip with everything backed up in it is to have the ability to create a duplicate image of my phone and flash it on my wife's.

well if you really want to learn
here's a simple example of how you can build yourself a rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-5x/development/custom-rom-starter-template-honor-5x-t3328809
keep in mind you can't use his updater-script and you need to adjust some of the commands to match the note 5
but for the most part all roms are the same
you need:
META-INF <Folder>
boot.img
system.apps.tar.gz
system.therest.tar.gz
and optionally > data.tar.gz
once you have these you essentially have a rom

There's also an app called "zip me" in the play store that will do exactly what I wanted.

If you want a duplicate image why not create two nandroids and copy one
to your pc then to your wife's phone since you say the phone is identical
which they would have to be in order to use the same backup.
Once the nandroid is on your pc you can simply copy it to your wife's
internal memory then restore using twrp.
I have about 5-6 nandroid backups of different roms for my phone.

I don't think I was clear in the op. I know how to create nandroids, and yes, I could easily do it that way, but what I really want to do is compile my rom, settings apps and app settings into a flashable zip instead. To further my knowledge so to speak.
