All of the Windows Mobile 6 ROM's I have used fully support the security policy stuff that is enforced by Exchange when using the device for "Direct Push" email (for what its worth).
I have also found that if you add Blackberry software it works well enough with there policy software if that is your enterprises ‘thing’.
As for your unique company policy, only you and your IT guys can judge that. Just about EVERY company has a different view on what is important.
Support for Exchange policies, a few custom CABs and support for our device management tool mean that using Mobile 6 (or 5) in our enterprise is a non issue. Our only issue with the Universal is the fact that strictly speaking Mobile 6 is a licence violation on the device . Not the case with the Vox’s, TyTN2’s and other native Mobile 6 devices we have.
Your biggest hurdle is that most IT departments in any sizeable company are not going to let non company kit onto there networks, and for a lot of company’s that will extend to non approved software/ROM images etc. being banned.
I guess security enhancements with WM6 are not so... "strong".
As IT Security Integrator, i'm very waiting for Exchange 2007 SP1, that should enforce AS Policies even more than non-sp1 release.
I advise you and your IT Admin (i think they already did, though) to have a look to Exchange SP1 release notes.
There are literally hundreds of enterprise applications out there for management of mobile devices that support everything from symbian phones, to pda's, to windows mobile phone devices.
Some of the better ones are SOTI, Afaria, and Pointsec.
They give remote access to handle remote package management, as well as locking the device and access to applications by user, or user group too.

If you're talking about ROM Upgrades to Crossbow and license issue, well it's just a lack of support from Manufacturers. Afaik microsoft is providing WM6 license upgrade for free, but providing customers with WM6 rom on old devices would mean no market for new devices. Microsoft ships upgrades to OEM only however.. Not to final customers.
However Exchange 2003/2007 should not store any information regarding devices. I mean, any information relevant. It recognize the device assigning it a unique Idetifier at first synch (SID). I could have a deep look about that with exchange 2007, though. Just tell me what you're looking for.
Ok... If Microsoft is providing WM6 license upgrade for free... why cooked ROM are not so... "legal"?
My problem is: I would like to use my device in my professional life... and I would like to use it the best way I can! This means I need WM6... The problem is that HTC does not provide an official upgrade, but we know that we can develop our ROM... So... How can I legally install my WM6 cooked ROM on Universal? Should I buy some license from someone? Or I can simply flash my device with my ROM and run it without caring about Microsoft license because the upgrade is free?
What about the SD-card encoding "thing"? It should be compliant with any security policy, provided you only lose the card, not the whole device, since in that case, the card can't be read, right?
Yeah... The SD encoding it's fine for policies but... the question is... the encryption key is store in the device (and is deleted with an hardreset) or is created from some device hardcode data? To answer this question we can only try to encode-hardreset-access data... and see if we can still read sd files... (i'll try next weekend)
Anyway... another issue is... how encrypt all data store in device memory? is there any good (light and clean) plugin (driver or application) that can encrypt all the contacts and calendar and, above all, exchange login details?
new symantec mobile suite 5 should do that and make device super-compliat to most (all?) enterprise policy... i'd like to buy it but I do not find any way to place order through the internet!

Hi,
You could change shell paths so that all user data is stored on the SD.
Although I have not tried it, I believe it's simple enough to move all databases to the SD Card.

No, there won't be VPN support built in. You can't expect it from third parties either because socket manipulation APIs are missing.
It will come later but no time frame is known.

It does seam crazy that MS are pulling things out that people have wanted working for years.
Yet its a basic option in win7 desktops.
They aren't really pulling things out they just haven't been able to put it in yet. All these things will come and when they do it will be done in a good way and not just a thrown in feature. Give it some time.

Windows Phone is aimed at people who don't want to deal with geeky stuff. They want something easy to use and which covers all the basics. And which is beautiful and has beautiful apps. WP is influenced by iOS but is actually competing with Android. WP is a much better choice than Android for the none geek. Which is 98.0% of humanity.

I also live in China and need a vpn. I bought an HD7 and felt sad when I had to return it a few days later. It is a beautiful os, but not at all good for foreigners in China.

Totally agree! VPN us important and Skype is also missing... I found though that is not that tragic with the mango update coming in the end of the year all the problems should be solved

The Skype part missing will be fixed. I have not seen anything official on missing VPN being addressed.
It would be nice to have VPN support but it is apparent that WP7 is getting better with time.

If there's no VPN support when the official update arrives, whether it is app-based or built-in, I'll need to buy another phone. VPN is essential to log in to our universitys network.

vpn probably won't come until the update after mango.. supposedly that release will be more focused on enterprise features.. I'd be surprised if vpn is missing from that list.

Hello Yep you are absolutely right in saying if there is no VPN why would organizations use it for their email. But there is more to it,
Organizations won;t use it for their email/
They won't recommend their employees to have Windows Phone 7 Smartphones as they won't be able to have secure remote access with out VPN.
Netizens in Censored Countries won't use it as it won't allow them to bypass censorship
Heavy Hotspot users won;t use Windows Phone 7 as they can't VPN for secure WiFi Sessions.
And there is a lot more if they don't support VPN.
I wonder why they haven't decided to roll out the update with Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. This will fail the product in corporate and Privacy Oriented Users for sure.

I know mate, its highly dissapointing that theres no OCS client - I used to use it on my TP2 all the time and am seriously contemplating going back to one.
As far as i'm aware (from reporting by wmpoweruser.com) - Microsoft have no plans to create an Office Communicator client Apparantly they are focusing all they're efforts on the new Lync server client for WP7 - which means your infrastructure will need to be upgraded to Lync server before you can use the client (as and when its available)
Highly dissapointed also about this, as a work tool I can't believe microsoft ain't even supporting they're own products! - Saying that even exchange policies aren't fully enforced!!!

No, the Office Communicator 2007 products are not compatible with Microsoft Lync and vis-versa, they expect that by the time WP7 get's the Lync client that all the OCS Customers will have upgraded to it by then.
Was trying to log in via https website. Did not work out because wp7 does not work with pop ups. Is there a way to do this? Use pop ups?

The reason OCS 2007 will never ever be running on WP7 is that there is no NTLM support atm.

I'll just say this - I am using Lync client and the company has moved to Lync 2010 backend... it is, I kid you not, a VERY good upgrade. If your IT department has no plans to upgrade they are missing out.
1. Meeting conferencing in app is much improved - no more need for LiveMeeting
2. Presence updates are much improved
3. More social functionality
4. Better Filtering
5. Better VoIP integration
It is quite a bit better as a product. Plus, you can do one click dialing from all links in IE - you see a phone number the new add in recognizes the number and you just click an icon... it's all pretty nice .
Me personally I don't want any UI that looks like OCS - Lync is way better.

I understand the new version of OCS (Lync server) may have newer fancier facilities but our organisation has no plans to upgrade to it.
unlike private companies, public organisations tend to stay one step behind for technology and I know for a fact we have no intention to move to lync server in the new year.
This leaves the 700+ users we have using WM6.1 with NO upgrade path to WP7 - Microsoft are just shooting themselves in the foot by only providing a Lync server client. Bearing in mind corporate / enterprise users are Microsofts bread and butter for the Windows mobile / Phone platforms this doesn't bode very well for promoting the use of WP7.....all at the expense of satisfying the few personal Microsoft users out there - HIGHLY DISSAPOINTING.
If anyone creates or finds a client capable of running with OCS please do post and let us know - thanks.

They announced a Lync client was coming, they never said that it was part of Mango.

I really love my Android phone, but I also love the WP7 interface and I think it has great potential, especially after Mango has been released.
Since I am on Verizon, I am possibly looking to get the HTC Trophy, but I wanted to first ask some questions I hope you all can answer. I apologize in advance if some of these are stupid questions, but any help you all can provide would be greatly appreciated.
1) Is there a good Remote Desktop app for WP7 that uses native Remote Desktop functionality? i.e., I don't want to have to install a VNC-type server on my machine for it to connect to. I also want to be able to set the machine resolution, much like the Windows-desktop based RD application
2) Microsoft Exchange app - the native Android mail app sucks, so I purchased Touchdown for Exchange, which is a MUCH better MS Exchange client. Does WP7 have something similar? Or, is their native Exchange mail app good? (I want to be able to view HTML emails, and if possible, send HTML emails)
3) Flash- I know Flash is currently not supported. From what I read, Mango was supposed to bring Flash to the platform, but I see that it isn't the case. Will Flash ever be supported? Or, is there a way to hack the phone so that we could add support for Flash?
4) Sideloading apps - Android allows to sideload apps without unlocking/rooting the phone. Can this be done with WP7, or do we have to unlock/jailbreak the phone first? I read somewhere that up to 10 apps can be sideloaded... any info on this would be great.

1) There is only 1 at the moment and it's called Remote Desktop and it's a little pricey at $5.99. There's only a few reviews on it so far but people seem to like it.
2) The default email client is excellent and can view html emails with no problems at all. There isn't any rich text editing when composing an email.
3) We can only guess but I don't see it happening. I don't know of any browser that supports flash and hacking IE9 to support it is extremely unlikely. Perhaps one day it will happen but don't expect it any time soon.
4) You have to dev unlock the phone to sideload apps. There are free methods or the official method by paying Microsoft $99 for a dev account.
So annoying, I am the only person at work with a winphone 7, I previously had an HTC touch pro 2 and a company PDA both running win 6.5.3 which sych great with the corporate exchange server
Everyone else has iphones, nokias, android phones and blackberrys....I have a brand spanking new TITAN with the latest Mango update and I am the only one that cant synch with exchange server, I get ERROR 8501005 and some guff about security policies, but every other phone of any brand running anything but phone 7 works fine
I have 2 days before I just take it back for a refund, I have no access to the server and cant expect IT dept to change anything just for me
Any ideas ?....its ironic that the only OS that doesnt synch with microsoft exchange is microsoft phone 7

I think that it is something to do with the fact that our security policy enforces encryption and a password, I think its the encryption that WP7 doesnt support
Mobile 6.x.x ix OK though so this phone is no use to me, I will swap it for an i-Phone

Its the on device encrption that is not supported that is my problem, heres an article that explains it

Many businesses require such encryption to be able to access corporate data through EAS (Exchange ActiveSync) policies and automatically block connections from devices that don't support device-level encryption.
Users will get the error code 85010013/15 when trying to sync their email on a Windows Phone 7 device, rather than an English description of the problem. Microsoft's support forum confirms the lack of on-device encryption support"
I have the same problem, an the answere from the IT department is:
Windows phone 7.5 exchange synchronization doesn't work.
And with an organisation of more than 10.000 emploees I don't think I (as an consultant) will be able to change their view on his.....
There has to be a way to bypass this ?
Maybe we can change som regestry setting to fool the Exchange server that the phone is an iPhone or another compatible phone ?

If your company is using EAS 2007 or newer WP7.5 should work. But if you are using EAS2003 SP2 WP7.5 seems to have broke working with that. There is no registry hack I am aware of to fix this as it is the actual program in the phone.
NoDo works fine which makes this even more frustrating. And yes, it is amazing WP7.5 is the only phone OS out there that does not work well with EAS2003SP2 but I am guessing MS doesn't care much as they want corporations upgrading their EAS servers.
