I'm having some issues with the Galaxy S3 headphone jack.
I was running stable CM 10.1.2 and everything seemed to run perfectly.
I used to use my headphones regularly but stopped for about 2-3 weeks, then I tried using my headphones at the gym and that's when I noticed the problem.
I can play music just fine in the car using the aux cable, but when I use headphones, the sound is very distorted.
I've tried three different pairs of headphones. All of them work perfectly fine with my other devices, so the issue is definitely not the headphones.
I have checked the DSP Manager settings, and don't have any EQ's or anything set up.
I updated my modem to MF1 and put CM 10.1.3 RC2, but that didn't solve the problem.
I'm having trouble figuring out whether this is a software or a hardware issue.
Anybody have an idea of what could be the problem here and how I can fix it?

The latest versions of android (i.e. jelly bean) are experiencing a lot of weird stuff with the audio. I know I've had serious problems with bluetooth audio being distorted and have yet to find a fix. Some people have said the latest CM 10.1 nighties have a fix. My suggestion would be to check that out.

I'm having some trouble with my sensation bluetooth. It paired to my car fine (2011 subaru wrx) but the audio when i play music crackles which makes it un-listenable for me. pandora and the music player both have the same issue and the audio is fine when listening through an aux cable.
the other thing is that it doesn't auto-connect. i have to go into the wireless settings every time i get into my car and manually connect it. i'm coming from the nexus one which had no issues with my car bluetooth system at all.
any one else having these issues?
Hi
I have just got my Sensation XE and have been experiencing exactly the same issue, however I appear to have found a solution.
My Car Stereo is a Sony MEX-BT5100 which has worked flawlessly with my past phones (Iphone 3GS, HTC Touch Diamond) but almost every song I played through bluetooth with the Sensation was crackling making it unlistenable. Was on the verge of returing the phone and getting a Galaxy S2, when noticed that the crackles were mostly at the louder points in the songs so I tried reducing the bluetooth volume a couple of notches on the handset and this appears to have solved the problem. I am guessing that with the bluetooth output volume set at max on the handset, then with loud pieces of music the car stereo couldn't cope which resulted in the crackle. I had also noted the same with my HTC Bluetooth Headset (BH-S100) but to a lesser extent.
Has anyone else noticed something similar?
I also had these issues.
The funny thing is that I had no problems in audio quality when using Spotify.
I recently flashed one of the ICS + sense roms based on the last leaked RUU and the problem seems to be gone.
Since lowering the bluetooth volume I have had no more crackles so hopefully problem is solved!

In that case, perhaps the ICS ROMs have a lower max bluetooth volume output set, I'll wait and see how the official ICS ROM behaves with my Car Stereo at max bluetooth volume!
Cyanogenmod 7.1 stable, only phone mic works even tho headset is recognized as a headset and not headphones, worked on stock.
I installed the inspiremod 0.5, and the headset microphone was still not working.
Then I went on getting a new kernel, lordmodUEv8.6-CFS-INSPIRE as it supports dual mic.
Ok I ended up with a damn awesome phone, but the only flaw being headset mic is just not working...
Am I missing something to get the dang headset microphone to work?
Anyone?
Just to be sure it's a phone issue...
Have you tested the microphone on another device to confirm that it works?
(I had a pair of headphones that coincidently quit playing out of the left ear the same night that I rooted my phone and flashed Ice Cold Sandwich 2.0.0... it wasn't till I tried the headphones in my laptop that I was sure it wasn't an issue with the phone)
I upgraded to nightly 260 plus same kernel and inspiremod, the mic now works.

Seeing old post, and I wonder if I might have this issue in jellytime, havent used the headset in a while..
Hi all,
I have successfully rooted and flashed Paranoid Android 2.54 onto my ATT HOX and it is a wonderful ROM for sure. I love the options that it provides and the silky smooth, almost stock interface. The only real issue that I have come across is when I try to use a headset for calls. I am defining a headset as a 3.5mm plug in set of earbuds with mic (Klipsch S4i to be exact). When I listen to music, be it on Pandora, Google Music or Apollo all is well. As soon as I try to use the phone, no sound comes through the earbuds and the mic does not function. In fact you can see a noticable slow down in the dialer app when the headset it even plugged in. If I make a call, then plug in the headset, everything goes silent and the other side can't hear me until I unplug the headset from the phone.
Here is the real kicker though! I have my car stereo modded with an aux 3.5mm plug for listening to music and if I plug the phone into that it works just fine in phone mode! Now, I do realize that the Klipsch is setup as a TRRS and the car aux is just TRS (so when using the car stereo I am effectively bypassing the mic portion of the 3.5mm plug and using the phone's mic), but I cannot for the life of me understand why the headset will not work.
I am hoping that someone can enlighten me or least tell me that they to are experiencing this same issue. I will gladly provide any more info that someone might need to help diagnose the issue, and thanks in advance!
Update so far...
So, up to this point here is what I've found. If I plug in a normal set of earphone (read buds only no mic inline) then I will get sound through them no matter what I am doing (youtube, music or phone). Also, in this configuration anyone I am talking to on the phone can hear me just fine as I am using the phone's mic. However, when I plug in an earbud/mic combo the phone will not function. I get silence and the other side cannot hear me speaking either. It's as if the software has somehow told the headphone jack to act differently than it used to with earbud/mic combos. I am stumped as to why the OS would not allow this type of use when it is so standard. Anyone have any thoughts?
I actually have the same headset and I started having problems with it on the stock rom before I even rooted and flashed a custom one. I honestly just thought it was because they're really made for apple phones. Sometimes I'll just unlplug and plug them back in for them to register. Other than that I haven't seen a fix for them.
P.S. Klipsch control from the play store seemed to make things worse for me

Thanks for the response! Yeah, I think I am going to try another ROM just to see if it will help, but I have the distinct feeling it might be a hardware issue. I just can't understand why this would all the sudden malfunction right after rooting for me. Maybe just a coincidence. I will definitely respond here though if flashing to a new ROM helps...

I've never tried paranoid but King kang(which has paranoid elements) works fine for the most part. nocturnal'd dirty rom, miui, and cm10 have all worked for me tho. I'm currently on the unofficial cm10.1 4.2 and that's working for me as well, except when I have the headset plugged in while booting.
Final Update....And SUCCESS
So, it appears that it was some sort of ROM specific issue. I flashed CleanROM 5.1 to my phone and "wah-lah"! The headset works perfectly in all modes. I am not sure what it was about Paranoid Android 2.54 that would not allow the headset/mic combo to work with the phone, but I am free of it now I guess. I will miss the interface of PA, but boy does CleanROM run FAST!!! I am in awe of the speed and responsivness. I hope the battery life holds up like PA did for me and I also think that the quick settings on CleanROM basically RULE.
Has anyone successfully found a solution to the lack of audio quality when streaming music through bluetooth. I know I can't be the only one who's frustrated that music over bluetooth crackles and has a noticeable loss in sound quality even when streaming to a good head unit. From searching, I've dug up a few old threads but none of those fixes seem to work/appear to be outdated.
I'm running Eclipse Rom with Ktoonz kernel for reference.

I don;t think there are any solutions because there is no inherent problem. I'm running the Ktoonz kernel with a different ROM, which really should make no difference, as the bluetooth lib is a third-party vendor lib in all ROMs . I have no issues on my 3 different headphones and two different bluetooth speakers. Sounds great, no dropouts or static. If I walk away, say 25 feet or so, which is the limit of bluetooth range it start to degrade which is to be expected. Since the bluetooth libs and firmware are not open source, there's not much a developer can do to fix it or screw it up.

Hmm, is it possible that hardware might be messed up? When I'm streaming I'm in my car so the phone is within a few feet of the bluetooth receiver. Looks like I'll have to find another bluetooth speaker to test to see if its my phone of if it's the headunit in the car.
Bluetooth on aosp isn't quite perfect despite popular opinion. I have difficulty getting devices to reconnect after pairing and sporadically get pops and other sound glitches. With touchwiz I have none of these issues. YMMV.

Seems like that could be my issue. May make a backup and temporarily install a TW rom to see if there is a difference.
Since android 7.1 I can't use my bluetooth earphones with my Nexus 5X. I'm this close to selling up for a different phone.
I can pair my Nexus 5X to my Anker earbuds, but the sound drops out so much it's unusable, stuttering several times a second.
The weirdest thing though; the problem is worse when my phone is near my earphones, like when I hold my phone up to see the screen. When the phone in my pocket or across the room, it works OK.
The problem is also worse when the screen is on than when it's switched off.
Can anyone help solve this? The fact that distance helps makes me think it's maybe a weird bug related how 7.1 manages bluetooth power and interference? A Bluetooth LE thing?
For reference;
It's a Nexus 5X, currently running stock 7.1.2 beta. This problem began exactly after the 7.1 update.
I'm using Anker Soundbuds Sport earphones. It's not the earphones, I've tried another identical pair. They also work fine with other phones.
Bluetooth works fine with other devices; my soundbar, bluetooth speaker.
I've tried rebooting, full factory image flash, every wipe possible.
I've tried Lineage OS, including flashing that aptX mod.
Let me know if you want any more info.
