Help EFS Problem - Galaxy Tab 7.7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Hello I successfully upgrade to Official JB Stock ROM but seems the problem is my EFS, I have unknown IMEI so samsung LCD Codes & I can't use sim card anyone have solution for this? thanks

Before even trying anything, I would suggest that you backup your current EFS partition first.
You can do this from within the custom TWRP recovery menu, using adb commands or possibly some apps or PC programs. You may need root for some methods. You can also copy the EFS folder files with a root type explorer.
Once you've made a backup (in case you make things worse), this thread here may be of help :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18524176 edit: yes, I know it's for the the sgs2, but the dev does say other devices too.
Also, have your tried to reflash manually your firmware with Odin?
There are guides here in xda and our forum, and firmware can be found at sammobile.com or samsung-updates.com
As last resort, I'd take a look at some of the sgs2 EFS repair apps. Could make things worse, but also fix it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doky.sgtoolbox&hl=en
Any decision is ultimately up to you....
Edit 2: if all methods you try are unsuccessful (or made worse and totally unrecoverable), you may have to send to Samsung for repair. Sending to an owner of a RIFF box (JTAG repair) may be faster and cheaper though.
Best of luck

help find and install i9305 ODIN and root tools

Hello all android experts superior to me. I am just a simpleton right now but I am hoping I can learn how to feed myself over time and actually contribute something back to this developer community. Your patience is greatly appreciated.
*Yes I have already read every single thread for my device and not been able to find a clear solution without risking bricking my phone.
*The video asked to be brief but clear. I was not brief, but clear.
*
I am a noob and I am very interested in learning how to mod my Android Samsung Galaxy 3 i9305 (details).
Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE Hong Kong Version
Model number:GT-19305
Android version: 4.1 .1
Baseband version: 19305ZHALl1
Kernel version
3.0.31-177985
**
I have spent about 20 hours of research and got conflicting results.
I am looking to do the following things (in order) and I would deeply appreciate any specific instructions (with specific device only and complete software file names and versions please) any of you might help.
1) Root the phone
2) Install the ODIN application on a PC (Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit) so I can actually back up my device to an external PC. I am amenable to using the mobile ODIN program offered but I need to know what specific ODIN application will work for the device. *Note yes my KIES drivers installed for USB to PC connection working fine and will turn off KIES when using ODIN
3) Install CWM or something similar so that I can copy my own device ROM and save it for back ups in case I lose my phone or wifey smashes it.
4) Use CWM or SU program of some sort so I can flash my own backup ROM for backups AND try out other people’s custom ROM’s.
5) Find or build a custom ROM that is devoid of bloatware and google extras.
*
Only component I need to retain is to be able to use the Samsung Chinese IME supplied keyboard since I need to read and type Chinese characters in pinyin.
*
Thanks for listening and sorry for being such a dullard, didn’t know how else to start out learning this. I am very interested in learning more and would appreciate any reading suggestions you might offer.
:cyclops:
Nice work, Some people flash there phones before reading everything properly and brick there devices, But you did a very good move by doing NOTHING untill 100% sure. Because of this thread and my instructions bellow I decided create a thread (What to do after you buy the 4G S3) Either go there or just keep reading on here.......
So before you flash anything, or start playing with your gem, follow these important steps below to get all the important parts backed up and safe, so that you will not have to return your device back to samsung broken. Believe me I have seen it happen PLENTY of times in this forum, so read carefully
Make sure you have a Good USB cable and a stable PC and that don't get any power outages or surges, you dont want to be half way through something and you loosing power or bad connection.
1st: Install Samsung Kies on your PC this will then Install the Samsung USB drivers you will need to connect your device to your PC OR you can get the samsung drivers on there own from the Link in 2nd step, but I recommend you install kies as it may be useful to you in the future.
2nd: Now as your IMEI number is like the heart of your device lets back it up right now: Follow only part of these steps in this link, you will finish the rest of the backups at the end when your rooted. I have copied and bolded the parts you will need to do right now, once finished this section of the backup you should be left with a *.qcn file which is roughly around 250kb of size.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33048706&postcount=1
*Setting up QPST with your PC:*
*Backing Up IMEI / NV Data:*
*Restore USB Settings after Backup / Restore:*
Now keep that page open because you will return here in step 6 once you are rooted to complete the backup process.
3rd: Now Install Odin V3.04 - You can get the link for odin in the 4th step link, So you may aswell just continue on to 4th step as the instructions inside that link advice you to install Odin aswell.
4th: Now you must Root your device and install CWM recovery , Follow these steps carefully > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32235061&postcount=1
5th: Once you have root I recommend you instantly make a full backup of your device also known as a Nandroid backup. You must go into recovery mode to do this with the CWM recovery you have just installed in 4th step above.
6th Now lets finish the backup process since we are now rooted, I am going to say this again, this is VERY important incase something goes wrong and you loose your Imei and Data, you need to back it all up. By doing this it will save you returning your device back to samsung like many have done previously because they have not done this, Remember where you left off in 2nd step above? Well now you can go back and complete the partition backup of the efs folders. You should be left with 4 backup files for this final section of the backup process >>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33048706&postcount=1
--------====FINISHED====--------
Congratulations you now have your Imei/Nv data backed up , You are rooted and Nandroided. Now you can play around but off-course DO NOT be reckless make sure you know what you are playing with
Peace
PS: Only trust what you see in this I9305 XDA forum, as i have been following the device from day one and I can only recommend the information you see here.
I appreciate your altitude of ask before risking.
Well, I'd give you process & advices for your question.

You inverted step 1 and 2.
1st: Either -
a) Install Samsung Kies from the enclosed disc / Samsung's site
OR
b) Install the SAMSUNG Android USB Composite Device Driver (Google it Yourself)
2nd: Download Odin (from CF-Auto-Root thread)
3rd: Root by
a) Install CWM -> Root
e.g. ClockworkMod 6.0.1.5 and SuperSU zip package;
b) Root -> Install CWM
Install pre-rooted Firmware / CF-Auto-Root then install CWM from above
4th: Better backup your ROM and /efs (IMEI data and etc.)

In fact, you just RESTORE backup not flash one. They work differently.
You can flash ROM zips in CWM or Mobile Odin by ChainFire and Odin tars in Odin or Mobile Odin

Well, there isn't any AOSP ROMs (Android Open Source Project, which developers build directly from source code) yet, but only modified stock ROMs.

You could try some other replacements like Go Keyboard.
If you still get questions fell free to ask me even in Chinese (not in thread but PM me)
Seems like someone did not read the thread before postin instructi0ns again, lol . But. Anyways i gues it does not hurt having more instructions, well my instructions is exactly the way i did my phone. It was done in those steps and i am sure its clear for you. Nice guide however I would recommend step 5 to be the first thing to do after installing the drivers as EFS area is very important.

I've done back up you detail but can't do the other until rooted? Is this correct
Thanks Liyriquid. I thought you needed root to do the QCN as i did when i was rooted but since you dont have to that is the best idea. To the OP >>>>>>>>>>>>> I HAVE NOW EDITED MY INSTRUCTION POST.
Please Note that you will ONLY be able to dp the QPST Tool QCN backup before you are rooted but to complete he partition backup you will need to be rooted. So just follow my steps i have broke up the steps for you easily to figure out
Edit: My guide should be the first thing people look at after buying this phone and start playing with it, as it links you to the most important guides and steps you need to take to keep it backed up and safe

A big thanks to btemtd for putting this easy to read guide together.
Also thanks go out to lyriquidperfection for the initial guide on backing up the EFS.
I have only had my S3 for a few days now and am keen to try a few different ROMs out on it. I also have an original Galaxy S that I have been trying out many different roms on for the last two years I have had it. Had a lot of fun doing so, and look forward to the same now with the S3. Can't wait to get Odin fired up and CWM installed. Let the fun begin !
I am thinking it may be a good idea for that instruction to have a thread on its own,
Is there any chance of it bricking my device when installing Cwm and leaving on me unable to get my imei details stored?
Also is a nandroid backup a complete backup image of my firmware as I'm not quite sure what this is a and why I need it.
Thanks

Hi guys. I'm considering the 9305 but I have a question.
Can you install any 9300-ROM on the 9305? Kernel and baseband aside, of course.
Or do all (great) ROMs need to be recompiled for the 9305? It the same Exynos 4412 in the bottom, should work to flash most 9300-ROMs?
Thanks.
Yes it should not be too hard to port over, You just need to abit of fiddling around, A noob wont be able to do it, but someone who knows what they are doing should be able to do it easily You just need to change the updater script as the partition location has changed so you just have to tell the rom installer where you want it to install. which is what the updater script.
Kernel + and base firmware need to be changed. I just dont understand why more expereinced people have not done this yet, i guess they dont really care about roms

I really cant see how you can brick your device if you follow those steps VERY carefully as this is what i have done and most of us on here, and make sure you have Good usb cable and stable PC and don't get any power outages or surges

I don't think it will brick your device. Recovery partition is a relatively safe one compare to /boot, however it may happen.
It won't break your /efs except you flashed CWM over efs partition and overwrite your IMEI.
Nandroid is a complete backup of your phone. It's useful because you can recover your Android if you did made something wrong.
You may better think Nandroid is a kind of 'snapshot' of you phone.
Soon I will show you all how to make your own pre-rooted Odin packages!

[Q][N8020][IMEI] discharged battery and IMEI: null / null. What I supposed to do?

Hello.
I have Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE (N8020). My device battery goes to 0%. I turned on device and I have charged battery.
I noticed that there is 'no service'... I checked IMEI and there is 'null / null' :/
I performed full wipe, flashed with boot+pda+modem+csc - no change.
Now I have XXBLL2 pda with root, imei on paper and 'no service'.
What I supposed to do?
Please help..
Regards.
Hope you did not flash any custom rom check the count if it is zero take it to a service center get it replaced
Run Triangle Away to reset rom counter .
Flash stock firmware and then factory reset to clear reset status from modified .
Otherwise its a no warranty job if Samsung spot its been customized or rooted .

Mate, instead of using the recovery above and as your tablet will still be in warranty, TAKE IT BACK as long as you have restored stock.... You could go through these steps and still find you have no IMEI, need to take it back anyway. Why screw around with it more and chance Samsung charging you for replacement parts?

no... in my EFS folder is... nothing :/ folder is blank.
I can do what I want with this tablet and still it can be repaired in the service, but it want to do it myself (before xmas).
I can flash / root etc. Simple question, it is possible? Can I for example take EFS folder from another tablet, and change IMEI or something like that?

No .
But their are illegal methods of changing the IMEI i believe .
Discussion of such is banned on XDA .

ah, I did't know. ok, so... xmas with 'no signal', and then I will take it to my samsung friends
Thanks all for help
Sounds like your EFS stuff has been fux0red somewhere along the. I'm thinking maybe there was some custom ROM flashing going on in its recent past? I've come so very close that 'oh what's the worst that could happen' moment myself mostly due to feeling like I'm the only person on the planet that has a lte vetsion of this device. N8020 just doesn't seem to have any development dome yet... anyway back on point...
Unless you have a back up of the efs partition its not something you can flash away and so will need warranty repairs or replacement by Samsung. You could try for DOA with the provider you 4ot through if its inside the timeframe, its either 14 days or 45 from memory but that's something that could backfire if you get a tech savvy sales person and the bust you. The first few posts are talking about making sure if you send it straight to Samsung that they don't bust you by the inbuilt flash counter. If they find its been flashed or the counter is >1 they will NOT cover it under warranty and you will be up for costs to repair. Can get a little expensive so best to be 100% this is sorted before submission. Ignore the poster above (mags69).. they must have not read the posts in full and are basically sending you to the wolves...
Search efs from I9100, I9000. Any of the note handsets 7xxx or whatever to learn why its so important to be sure you have that backup before going crazy. Worth a poke around in the file sysytem too IMO.. most,>90% from what I've seen, custom anythings flashed in cmw will do the backup by default. Seen it in folders, zips and nested deep in the sir structure. Like /mnt /sdcard /revo. Or /mnt /sdcard /checkrom/backup and so on.
Sorry for your troubles too mate.. sucks I know but with a calm and steady approach you should be able to come back from this with a lesson learned. Calm and steady and lie your ass off to Samsung
EDIT: maybe try a different modem. Hell its not going to make thing worse at this stage provided you don't hard brick your device somehow but obviously a lte stock modem would be the winner to try. Long, long shot though... worth the time to be sure on the other hand. I bet the efs at a different block address in the rom on these Ltd ones though and so its been overwritten or whatever cause the update has been coded to write at a specific block that's fine on say wifi version but due to the software differences on 3g or lte ones.

ok. I'm Samsung employee so I can repair it in service any time
I have another N8020 with proper imei but I don't want to have 2 devices with the same imei (its possible? I think no )... changing imei is illegal - I know, but I want to change it to original one.
The best thing - I use original PDA very long time... Without any flashing etc (never custom pda), I was a happy user and what? I loose IMEI xD
I take it to service. Too much combination = brick...
Modem can fix nothing it does not touch EFS .
CWM flash does not always backup EFS so don't rely on that read the description .Tools are available to back up EFS folder .
Occasionally flashing a stock rom/ factory reset may repair EFS but not if no EFS folder .
XDA forum member ODIA has the most knowledge on this subject .
jje
EFS folder exist, but is empty. You mean that flashing dont create EFS folder? or that not every pda?
Flashing does not create EFS folder that's why rule one is backup EFS folder .
neither does CWM recovery backup EFS .

Ah I see... well seems like there's one Samsung employee that needs to be asking the hard questions of his bosses.. haha could you imagine "boss my phone is fux0red for no good reason... fix it or I go public with what I know" hahahaha
That's a little disconcerting to know its bugged out without any flashing.. anyway back to the problem.. couldn't be as simple as getting the IMEI off the box or an invoice or even from your cellular provider from their records and just use whatever to restore it. It cannot be an illegal act to restore it the crime would be in changing it and therefore committing fraud over wire/telephony or whatever its called.. from my understanding its not the changing the number itself thats the criminal act but registering the fake IMEI on the network and using data or calling or texting is when you actually commit the chargeable offence. Same IMEI as original means no fraud or misrepresentation has taken place so no offence committed. You need that tech guru booth that sells cases but secretly the salesman has the mad skilz. They could do it no doubt at all. Hmm I remember a thread in the sgs2 boards about rebuilding the efs but from memory it was phone specific due to the address and the manual way you write the info.. sorry buddy outside my skillset so in terms of actually helping you get the right address to write to and what to write I'm no good to you. You need to find a guru in the sgs2/3 or similar that willing to help with this.

Bricked S6 please help

Hi guys
recently bought a s6 from ebay which was frozen on S6 logo. Basically managed to clear cache and factory reset from recovery but that didn't work, anyway I DL the O2 firmware and odin and put it into download mode I get a fail on odin when trying to install the rom
The phone has knox 1 and also has red writing SW Rev. Check Fail. Device: 3 Binary: 1.
I'm unsure what to do and if theres any chance for me to recover.
Many thanks
Mav
it failed because you flashed an incompatible Firmware.
where did it stopped flashing in odin? In sboot.bin?
If thats the case, you need to download proper firmware/country for your device.
Let me know what country is ur fone made of.
Hi thanks for your reply.
I managed to get it working by installing root and unikernel, it boots into O2 the firmwarw is 5.1.1
Only problem now is imei is 3500000000006
And it wont make calls dont know if imei is corrupt ir they sold me a stolen or lost phone?
I may install tw recovery and custom rom and see if that works.
Any suggestions?
Hi
Ive managed to sort out and get it to work infact typing on it now. Its currently rooted custom rom and twrp. I e managed also to restore original imei number so overall im quite pleased with myslef lol.
Anyway one last problem i have is ive tried all sims but none work i know ita picking up signal as the bar shows top right. Also chexk my settings.
Ive tried automatically and manually going to register networks but it says unable to connect try again later. I know uts not my area as my wifes s6 works perfectly. Sim also def works. The phone also picks up when a new sim has been inserted so i dont think its sim slot.
Any ideas guys
OK new update if anyone can help I'd really appreciate.
Installed new vador rom Imei reverted back and serial number is all zeros
Is this something to do with baseband if so how can I fix read somewhere about ariza patch but that was s3 4 etc.
Thanks
Mav
1. Your EFS is corrupted. The IMEI you see is a generic one, phone will be useless for network provider only wifi will work.
2. The one thing that caused this is by flashing an old bootloader to your phone. Thats why youve encountered Check Fail error on Download mode.
Happened to me also but got it fixed in the end.
OK thanks for the info how do I fix? I do have my wife's s6 but that's not rooted and don't want to root can I restore the efs
Many thanks
Mav

I think I know one thread that has a firmware downloader with ultra fast download speed you may try searching it.
I dont know if it will help, but you may be able to successfully flash the firmware but many of those who have problems were unable to boot the phone due to corrupted efs data.
Here's my way of fixing it (if you still have intact efs). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63693480&postcount=28
But if its already wiped, there's no way you can retrieve it unless bringing it to samsung or any repair shop.
Anyways, mine was fixed (IMEI) using Octopus box repair tool. Since I cant do anything to recover my generic imei.

As far as i know if your EFS partition is corrupt and you do not have a back up of the EFS partition to restore which you probably dont as you bought this as broken then sim capability is dead, im not sure of any other way to fix this unless you have the intact efs partition
Hi
How can I tell if the efs is corrupt it shows a baseband it now shows the correct ime I
It just won't connect to network it says try again.
I can post a screen print of efs folder on es Explorer if anyone knows what it should look like
Here are screen prints but I think I'm speaking to myself lol
Hi there i spent months on fixing issues like this (i now have a tool that takes care of all this) , best thing you can do is flash to a rom where the original imei came back do a backup of the efs, flash to a orginal rom ( latest rom) make sure its the right one for your device, connect to kies, install the rom again root and restore the efs failing that the imei is blocked use checkmend.com the uk version if your from the uk, message me if you need help

Your rom, recovery and kernel doesnt have to do with corrupted efs.
Only way is to bring it to repair service using box tools to re enter/validate your imei so that you can connect to your network provider. There is no other way around other than retrieving your efs and installing it or thru repair service.
You may now relax yourself at finding ways to connect, I assure it wont help trying to flash and flash and flash stuff to your phone.
---------- Post added at 08:46 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:37 AM ----------
Uhm can you send sms or make calls? It seems you have a valid Imei
Ok ive tried all stock roms including o2 and a uk btu one but no luck they all do the same thing get frozen on Samsung logo then I flash unikernel and it boots.
When checking my efs folder I can see no modem file I'm now wondering could that be the fault? so I downloaded modem and BL for 5.02 and 5.11 both will not flash via odin I get a fail message and on device check fail device: 3 binary: 1 messgage in red?????.
So I'm a little lost, I was wondering if I managed to root my wifes s6 which is virtually new could I back up her efs folder then copy it into mine and just amend the imei to my original would that work? also is there a way of rooting my wifes phone without triggering knox?
Any other suggestions guys I really don't know what bootloader was on it to start with or rom is there any way for me to find this out?, also another weird thing when the o2 uk roms install they install german apps?
Thanks guys
Ive repaired EFS Partitions with scripts downloaded from links at xda.
For example i trashed my EFS partition on my note 3 so it caused hard reboots after android booted up and it couldnt be fixed with anything else than the EFS partition repair scripts.
Edit: friend repaired his Note 4 also.
Thanks but where can I find these scripts as I've looked everywhere and if I did find how do I go about doing it. At the moment when I try to flash modem and bootloader it fails.

[Q] IMEI or EFS erased

Dear S6 Edge users
I was trying to install a new ROM on my samsung galaxy edge s6 (SCV31 g925j). And i wiped everything in TWRP before installing it. it seems liek i have wiped EFS with IMEI too. :silly:
Now, i have another device, so i took a backup of EFS in twrp and tried to resore it. However, my IMEI is still null.
Flashing stock ROM did not help too.
Could anyone please let me know if i can restore EFS/IMEI somehow? Can i copy it from my other device that actually works?
Many thanks
Bump
Technically you can restore efs backup from another phone.
Would it work without any problems, that is another question, but I honestly doubt it.
You could (if out of warranty) take phone to a 3rd party repair shop for fixing IMEI with Z3x box, or similar device, but some other issues (network, SIM, as in my case) could arise, not necessery, but could happen.

Thanks for reply. I guess i will have to try as many repair methods as possible (using root) and see if it helps.
If you manage to fix it without a box, please keep us posted, me and I belive lots of others would like to rebuild/repair efs.
Myself included

Unfortunately, i was unable to fix this. Restoring EFS from another device did not help

Note 5 from hell! Nothing brings back the signal / IMEI / Baseband

i tried to unlock the note 5 i have using nv_data.bin without making a backup of my efs. got all the way through installing twrp, custom darkstar rom, and more. When i went to finally put a working sim card in it.... NO SIGNAL/BASEBAND UNKNOWN/IMEI UNKNOWN! i tried everything, from using smart switch, to odin.... Whole firmware flashing, to just modem.bin & sboot.bin (and others individually) for a while seperately it wouldn't work with a full firmware restore (using odin or z3x it would stop at cm.bin) but eventually i got it flashed and back to stock with odin & z3x on N920TUVU4DPK6 latest firmware, even used smart switch to flash to stock, but NOTHING brings back the imei or baseband. even tried to use xposed to change imei with app when it was showing up missing. efs backup pro didnt work as it couldnt read pit for some reason but odin could read pit just fine. z3x wont reset efs, wont repair, wont repair certificate, wont unlock. even the efs backup pro apk wont fix the problem.
Im all out of options... i am very knowledgeable about technology in general, and i have been rooting/flashing/tinkering with android phones for 4-5 years now (working with computers and tech for 15 years). Im stumped on this one... anyone who has some extensive knowledge in this department willing to connect with a team viewer session and try to help me out or at least post somethings to try.
I really need help BAD and am lost without guidance... i also can't afford to buy a new phone so im hoping this can work again soon. before i did anything it was working fine, only locked to t-mobile so i dont think its a hardware issue.
anyone out there got a heart (and brain lol) to help! :crying:

Do you have efs backup ? If you have made efs backup i can help you. If you don't have efs backup then i suggest you go to any repair center cuz odin or custom recovery not gonna do the job.
To restore efs/imei you will require a dongle box to write new cert files in efs partition.

Have you tried using the restore on either Kies or Samsung
Hey happened to me with the note 4. There is a guy on ebay I used and he repaired/restored imei remotely. Cost was 60 or 70 bucks. Took all of 10 mins. And phone was even unlocked afterwards. Might be with a shot.

I have the EXACT SAME problem that you have. I'm on the latest firmware N920TTMB4DPH2, I can't rollback to prior firmware. z3x couldn't detect my phone's modem, I've been looking for a solution too. In my case, someone told me (even z3x log said the same thing) that I have to downgrade the phone's modem, but I still couldn't find a way to do this. I think in my case, I have to wait for Samsung tool Pro to finally support the modem or find a way to downgrade the modem. (Can't even find any modem out there). I just tried Samsung tool Pro 27.4 today, still doesn't work. I think you might have seen this post? This might help?

what! add me on the list, i was searching the same problem, and i found this thread. i guess no one can help in this community with no backup efs file. my device is sm-n920t note 5. i can downgrade to lollipop by, from stock nougat i will root and flash custom firmware, then on the custom firmware i flash it to any stock rom. this doesn't solve the problem.
Haha same issue here... A year later... And still no solutions... Mine is SM-N920P. I accidentally rebuilt the nv_data.bin file and my unlocked phone is showing me that my SIM card is invalid. I'm busting my nuts to find a solution.
