I've been using my GT-P6200 on my AT&T SIM card w unlimited data for the past 2 years.
I pick the tablet/phone up today and try to dial out. I could not at ATT blocked phone dialing ! But I had data !
So I called and they said that ATT changed my plan INTERNALLY (without warning to me) because I was using a tablet ! So I asked them to reinstate my voice. They did. But then my data was cancelled ! They said my Grandfathered unlimited plan was negated!
They asked if I have been using a tablet. I said no. But here's my question: I have my own device that is not much different than other Samsung large phones except I use 3G NOT LTE. So why is this a problem? Because its called a "tablet"?
What do I tell them? Any suggestions? Your experience is welcome...
tell them the IMEI is a PHONE IMEI, that is the only reason they gave your voice plan back.
The problem with tablets, from what I hear began with the original galaxy tab hacked to make voice calls, it uses more data because of larger webpages, they probably dont want every one doing this.
they kind of surprised me when they carried the Galaxy Mega 6.3
Im glad I have't got busted in my two years, I've never brought it into a store and the one or two times I had to answer what kind of device I had on phone support, I just said samsung galaxy.
Well, I don't have to worry much longer, already pre-ordered Note 3 LTE.
It could all have been a ploy to get rid of your unlimited plan, they will do just about anything to get us all off of that.
From what I have learned is in the IMEI number it tells att what device you are using. If they don't have any devices of that kind to reference they won't recognize it. But ATT has a lot of samsung devices now and can pretty much reference at least the classification of what you have to show it is a tablet.

for the fuze owners. i would like to know what all you guys are paying for your internet access. with a cooked rom, is at&t still able to tell what phone your using? i tried searching for this answer but have not found a definate answer. thanks.
Greg
I believe AT&T OLAM can still tell what phone you'er using. IMEI is hard coded, there isn't any way to hide it unless you probably did something with the hardware (like flashing some chip with some special tool). If you're wondering becuase of the mandatory data plans, and them switching... well I made a call to them, I don't have data, ask for a data opt out, they gave it to me (this was before it became mandatory), but they said if they ever updated my IMEI to my Fuze I'd have to get the data plan apparently, as they still have me down as using a Moto SLVR L7, which I got years ago, and have switched between that phone, a Nokia 6102i, and the Fuze. He said I'd have to update it manually over the phone if I wanted. So, they can tell, but it seems like right now you have to update your IMEI over the phone.
at&t can tell what phone you're using, but it wont be able to tell what software you are running.
I'm using ATT's standard $30 unlimited..
thanks for the answers. i see that when i check my account online, it changes to what phone i am using at that time. however, i have used phones that are not at&t branded. it then can not tell what phone i was using. just thought there was a way around the 30$ plan. it really bugs me that they charge such a difference for data. heck, i pay less than that for my dsl at home. again i appreciate the responses.
the general idea is to provide them with the imei of a non smartphone and you pay $15 a month instead, but if they catch you, i do not know what will happen since it is not exactly legal
Well I decided to leave my cyanogenmoded (5.08) G1 and try out the backflip.
Im miserable.
This thing is stuck in 1.5 (i dont think i can endure that for too long and q3 looks like too long lol)
Not to mention its LOADED with att crap apps..
AND
Now ive lost my $10 a month unlimited family data... with the G1 att didnt seem to care that I had that- now this Backflip is announcing- identifying itself as a smart phone to the ATT network... so it automatically changes my plan to the $25 a month within 24 hours...
200mb for 15 is not enough data... i will surely go over and frankly i think i could go over 2gb (lots of email and browsing... youtube etc)
SO
Will the Touch Pro 2 announce it self to the att network as a smart phone? Will any unlocked tmobile phone do that? I was told that the G2 Hero will not via another post but I am liking the look of the touch pro 2 a bit more- especially if I can port android to it...
Yes any TMobile unlocked phone will work with ATT just not ATT 3G. You will be limited to Edge. Same as taking an ATT phone and using it with Tmo. You will only see an Edge connection. 3G on ATT and Tmo are on completely different bands. Other then that the phone will work as normal. I'm surprised you were allowed to keep your unlimited data plan. ATT killed those off last week. New deals are $15 for 200mg or $25 for 2GB. You may want to call ATT and just make sure you still unlimited because if you just renewed they might has pulled a switch on you.

Well ATT did not let me keep the family data unlimited plan once I switched to the backflip...
I TRIED to do this quietly- I just threw my sim in the backflip and didnt say anything- but it sent me a text message a few hours later stating that it automatically signed me up for the 25/month data plan.
With the G1 it seems they (Att) did not know I was using a PDA - the G1 Did not report to the network that it was a PDA as the Backflip ( and I would assume any ATT PDA ) does.
What I am asking is- will the Touch Pro 2 (or any other NON-AT&T phone) act the same as the G1- could I tell AT&T that I am going to use my "Dumb phone" because I don't like the backflip (or what ever reason) - have them switch the Family data plan on for my line- and then put my sim card into a Touch Pro 2 and not have them know (as I did for the G1).
It would be nice if there was a list of phones that this is possible for... it would also be helpful if we knew HOW AT&T KNOWS that we are using a PDA - is it based on the IMEI number? Is there an android process or service or something in the background that announces it? Could we shut it down or change the ID number in such a way that AT&T's system would see a "Dumbphone" instead of a "Smartphone"/"PDA"
Just some thoughts...
Also- I understand that tmobile and att use different 3g bands and thus I would not get 3g- i don't care, frankly 3g is not that much faster than 2g (edge) any way.
No an HTC 8525 was the last phone I used where ATT or Tmo didn't pick up it was a smartphone and gave me the 9.99 unlimited plan. The HTC 8925 and up (TP2, TILT2, and HD2) all said "This phone is not compatible with this network, please call support to upgrade your plan." If I were you I would call support and blast the hell out of their ear. You should get the smartphone unlimited plan for $25, especially if you had a previous unlimited plan. All those are supposed to be grandfathered in. Tell then you never would have gotten the phone if you new you wouldn't be able to get unlimted data anymore. Its a new enough rule change they should be able to bump you up a couple support tiers and hook you up with the old unlimited plan. I know when they stopped doing the prepay plans they were calling accounts in for 2 weeks after the deadline until corperate said ok guys no more prepay its over. Then that actually quit selling it. So you should be able to get them to give you the proper unlimited plan. BTW what condition is your TP2? If its in mint I have a TILT2 I would be willing to swap. Then you would get ATT 3g. If you didn't know the TP2, TILT2, and Rhodium are all the same phone but different carriers.
Haha well the reason i was asking about this was because I wanted to see if I could use the TP2 on ATT with the 10 dollar family data unlimited plan... since apparently i can not I am not going to buy one lol :/.
At this point i need to find a phone that works on att, runs android, and allows me to use the 10 dollar unlimited plan without att recognizing the phone as a smart phone.
Does anyone have any suggestions? (other than the G1) Preferably something with a qwerty.
THANKS!
Not sure that phone exists yet, but who knows. I defenately know your not gonna be able to use your 9.99 data plan with any phones made in the past 3 years. They recognize the ime number and know its a smartphone now. ATT even puts what type of phone you used that month on your bill. I used his ATT sim card to unlock my phone, and he brought in his bill saying he used an iphone 21 days of the month and a Touch pro 2 for 1 week. I don't know why it said a week because it was more like 1 minute. But he said anytime he puts his ATT sim card in another phone it shows up on his bill as a new phone for a week.
Thanks- yeh its looking like G1 FTW!

Yes, the TILT2 has a chrome bezel around hte sides where the TP2 has black alum. The KB is different too. The TP2 has an actual QWERTY keyboard with numbers on top. The TILT2 merged the nubmers into the UIJKNM keys so you have to hit a function button then the number. Also the TILT2 is just a touch more modern feeling and looking. Even the slider feels like a higher quality. As for the internal chips I beleive they are the same except for the radio chip for different 3G networks.

The radio chip was what I was interested in. If the HTC TP2 rom will load on either device, will that allow the phone to run on either 3G network? I'm a Fuze owner so I don't have the first clue. I just would like to know.
The rom will flash on either device, but the 3G will not work on both ATT or Tmo. You will have to pick one or the other. Tmo runs on 1700mhz and 2100mhz, ATT runs on 850mhz? and 2100mhz. If you use a tmo phone on ATT you will just get edge, and vice versa.
Don't quote me on this, but it all has to do with what IEMI's ATT has is its data base, thats how the phone tells the network what kind and make the phone is.
The Nexus one for att 3g doesn't show up as a smart phone.....yet
TP2 T7373 (SEA edition) runs on Edge with ATT. $15 for unlimited. I once put my sim into a Blackberry and they switched my plan to $25/m. I took my sim out, put it back in my TP2 and then called them. They asked me the IMEI # and switched me back to the $15/m unlimited (MediaNet). Hope this answers your question.
HTC TP2: Cm7 vs WinMo
I do not know whether to turn to you below: : Confused:
Recently, they have gained from a TP2 that already had android 2.3.7.
I want the phone to 7.2.0-RC1-Hero Caynogenmod was changed back to WinMo, but only forum I read that the WinMo on how to make android (or next)!
Very slow and unstable for mal (as iron is not present).
Please help me, especially in how the program could be "android HTC TP2 is connected to the PC to WinMo to make him know what to do, and then step by step.
Important! : Sírás: (not just the android to WinMo on the card next to it alone!)
(I want to stay next to the robot, but if more than 2 of the stability and the "speed" of the WinMo is OK!)
A big thank you in advance for your help! : Good:
Dude this thread is 3 years old, post in the touch pro2 section, type is name in search device box on top.
History:
Company issued BB Curve 3g
Bought my own Captivate, took SIM from BB and put into Captivate. Voice and DATA work great. Now I have a nice phone that work pays for
Yesterday I bought an Infuse, took 3g SIM from cappy and put in it. Voice calling works NO data though.
Go to AT&T cust center this morning and they replace the sim with a new 4g one. Still NO DATA. Put the new 4g sim in the cap everything works fine - in Infuse only voice but no data which means no email = can't use for work & out a lot of money.
Does anyone know a fix for this or even why it's happening ? Will rooting it fix it ?
Yes, they have to switch you to a 4g plan in the system, your features and cost will still be the same but you will have "4g data plan". I know because I had the same issue. They had to enter my imei number into the system and then make the switch. It works in the captivate because that's a 3g device.
infuse 4g "a lot a screen real estate"
Which means I'm screwed because my IT people would not authorize that to be done as I am only allowed to use a BB or Iphone. Neither do I like. They were quite pissed when I told them I removed the sim from my BB. So no way to use the new Infuse. Not going to make the wife happy considering I shelled out cash for it last night.
Just curious, did you actually check to make sure 'packet data' was enabled in wireless settings under mobile networks?
That's the probable cause, you shouldn't need to change your data plan if coming from a captivate
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
yep. Everything is checked. Its a 4g issue and my company won't authorize attaching my blackbery data plan to the iemi of the new infuse because we aren't allowed to used android devices

its not that you need a "4g plan" its some network protocol they have to change. its actually the same one that the iphone uses. the guy in the att store showed me. i was making sure they would not touch my plan. no way im getting rid of my unlimited data.

He needs the 4g plan because when they enter the imei of the infuse, the Rep can't proceed unless they select the appropriate 4g plan, trust me I spent almost 2 hrs on the phone with ATT last week before they finally figured it out. He will still have the same features he has now but they need to select "4g".
infuse 4g "a lot a screen real estate"
Yup, I had the same issue, upgrade from cappy to infuse - DATA not working with the 3G sim. I had to activate the 4G sim came with the phone - NO DATA connectivity until the att technical support had set me up for "4G plan" and IMEI should be set for that. Then got the DATA working like a breeze. All happened in 10 mins.
I've switched back and forth between an iPhone 3g, Samsung Vibrant, Motorola Atrix and the Samsung Infuse with the same sim card and I've never had any of the issues that you all are having.
I get voice, text and data flawlessly with any of the phones, without the need to change my plan. Just because you may be on a 3G plan shouldn't hinder you from being able to use data on your Infuse. Unless you've somehow come across some kind of fluke, I would start looking at something else as the problem rather than what they have your plan designated as.
I concur with everyone above. Same exact plan on the surface, so your IT guys wouldn't even know, but the plan code is different....
You actually have to own or be authorized to make plan modifications in order to even switch the plans. If its through your company, I don't think they would put you on the account as an authorized person to change plans...
BUT you can always try.... sorry....

its not so much the plan as the fact that my company won't allow the current plan to be tied to the new infuse. I'll post the email exchange I had with my company in a bit.

That be the case. So I'm stuck with the captivate which is better than my company policy of BB or Iphone only.
So if anyone would like a BRAND NEW Infuse in the box for the same $500 I bought it for last night let me know. Free shipping
This isn't asking about it. I know AT&T's rules which is why I posted this. I just figured I would ask this one because I can't find a story like it. I got my girlfriend a GS2 and she had a non-smartphone unlimited data plan. Her and I knew this would add a minimum smartphone plan for 300mb via AT&T and accepted it. She got a text the day about it being added after I put the sim in and it told her a data plan would be added. She used the phone while awaiting the bill to come to her mom before she told her about having a different phone (as she was going to pay for the data difference once her mom found out). About a week ago, her data turned off, but her sim remains in the phone and just doesn't allow internet unless she is on wifi. Is it possible that AT&T turned off data? I'm sure that if her mom got the bill and didn't know, she may have called AT&T to tell them to take it off because her daughter doesn't have a smartphone. I've never heard of this before. It isn't a problem because she would have rather had it this way anyway, but we didn't expect it to happen like this. Anyone else have an idea of whats going? She is running task650's JB 4.1.1 and the phone is was unlocked by me. This is just out of curiosity because as I said before, she would have done this if she could, but we all know that data plans are required on non smartphones.
Looking for an android phone to use on ATT that does not require a data plan.
Until recently i was using the HTC Amaze 4g ( a Tmobile phone) on ATT. For a few months i had no data, no problem. Then i started using the gps a bit, so i got the data, but it was data unlimited for $10/month since the phone was unidentified. That lasted for 3 months or so, then i got the dreadful text saying i need to add data to my line cause its a smartphone.. I then read online, that the Original Nexus, not the 4, was unidentified by AT&T, and that it could be used without data. So i got that, but within 12hrs was forced onto a data plan.
NOW, i am looking for any help or advice on finding a smartphone, preferably android, to use on ATT without data. I almost always have wifi, and really just cant pay $30 extra a month for data that i wont use.
Want a phone that i can check my gmail on, gchat, and have my calendar and music handy, without having multiple devices...
I know this has been discussed in the past, but the threads i came across are outdated, and with new policies and new phones, i was hoping for an update.
Thank you in advance for any help.
I considered putting a pre-paid SIM for minutes in my smartphone - but that would really be NO DATA.
You could probably pretty easily do that - it would just be no data at all.
They might not let you do it on a contract on ATT. T-Mobile doesn't care if you're on a pre-paid plan, but it would depend on if they had good coverage in your area (I am on the $30/mo plan 100min/unlimited text/5Gb data - they have one that focuses on minutes, too). There are also other pre-paid services that use various towers that offer competitive prices.
I guess it really depends on what you need from the service.
Pop your sim into a dumb phone, call them and tell them you want a data block, after they do their thing put the sim back into the smartphone. I've had it like that for 2 years, then I got data, and after a month I had to bock it again, so I put the sim into a dumb phone again and called them to put a block. It always works.

Thats what ive done... but within a day or two, the data plan gets forced back on again... I even tried blocking data on the line, not using any at all, just wifi, and still they force it on. The rep says that the system scans for smartphones, and when it detects one it auto adds the data on.

Weird. Did you tell them to put a data block specifically? Did you give them your IMEI? Also, is the phone you're using an AT&T phone? I had my data blocked while going through 6 different smartphones, in a mix of windows mobile and Android. But non of them were AT&T branded.
Edit. Just reread the OP. All my phones were international except my G2 which was T-Mobile branded. And try to work with them over live chat. It's what I used and it always worked.
My last device with AT&T was an LG Thrive ( P506 ). I had no issues using it with AT&T and no data plan. Bear in mind that the P506 is a bottom end Android device. I was on the $25 month prepaid package for well over a year. In fact, I switched to Simple Mobile, only about 4 months ago.

That may be. OP asked for suggestions, thats what I gave. OP didnt specify prepaid or contract.
+1 for pre-paid. Gave my mom my old phone on a month to month contract. took them 4-5 months to actually detect her using the phone but they get pretty butt mad about it and start charging her some rediculous data plan.
