[Q] Easiest path to Root and Tether? - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

Hi All,
I've read all kinds of threads about unlocking the bootloader, adding a custom recovery, and installing custom roms. The development community does great things for Android users in general, and I'm very grateful to have you all doing what you do.
That said, I'm generally happy with my stock Q. I don't have time anymore to follow forum threads and try out various releases of various ROMs, etc.
The only thing I'm looking for that my current config doesn't do is WiFi teather. I'd even pay for the Sprint option if it weren't for the data cap that they add. I just can't justify paying more money to be able to download less data. Besides, I've been paying for an LTE phone for a year now, and they still haven't activated it in my area.
All of that leads to my question. What's the simplest way to root my Q, NOT install a ROM, and enable WiFi Teather? All of the threads I've found are based on the idea that I need to install a ROM.
Thanks.

[Q] Getting htc one s

I've been an iPhone user ever since they canned out. I unlocked and jailbroken them. My upgrade is due in a month and I wanna get a htc one s. i was just wondering do u really need to root it to get free applications and themes?
Also if I was root it what are my benifits
you dont need to root to get free apps from Google store. Rooting is required for themes though. Rooting is not necessary on android, most ppl root for theming and use it to install roms and backup application and data

For the basic user, rooting is a way to use their phone as a wifi hotspot for free as opposed to paying their carrier a monthly fee. For the average/experienced user, rooting allows you to put custom roms onto your phone. As opposed to apple which makes everything more difficult, you don't need to root your phone in order to get free apps like jags_the1 said. You can always download apk files to root of your sd card and install it from there.

New to the rooting scene

Hello every,
So after many years of having android, I've finally decided to root my device (currently a Verizon GS3), and although I've tech savvy person I still get a little confused about the processes of rooting. Now before you start pointing me at guides on how to root a GS3, I would like to ask a different question regarding rooting. I understing the fundamental idea of rooting, but what I dont understand is what a ROM is and how they are acquired.
I want to root my phone, but I also want it to be a learning experiance because as a CS major I started developing for android and any chance I get to learn is a chance I want to take
Thanks again!
ROMs are basically custom operating systems. There two types of ROMs the ones based on the manufacturer stock OS like samsung 's Touchwiz and HTC Sense the other is based on the stock Android OS (AOSP). There are guides to creating a Rom and porting a Rom.
You can also look up ROMS on YouTube, that's how I first figured out what they are

Have you searched our forum at all before creating this thread? The resources here are very good, and all it takes is to look at the stickies. The Evita FAQ thread and the How-To Guide For Beginners thread contain the answers you need.

I might be blind, or I didn't word my searches right, but I couldn't really find any information on what a ROM is, or what I should use for hotspot to work on an AT&T unlocked phone. If they're all the same when it comes to that specific question (i know they're all different), then that would solve the mind boggling question I have.
edit: sorry, i didn't think this would lead me to a simple question to waste space

A ROM is simply the operating system (OS) for the phone. When talking about "flashing a ROM" here on XDA to enable certain features, we are typically talking about a "custom" ROM, or one that is modified by the XDA user community. So when you "flash" (install) a custom ROM, you are replacing the stock OS with a custom OS. Also, in your case flashing a stock rooted ROM on any base except AT&T will also enable the WiFi hotspot.
There is also a hack (root required) for enabling WiFi hotspot, but not sure if this works on latest OS version. Personally, I despise the stock AT&T OS, from the gimped functions (not just hotspot, but flashlight, FM radio, and more), network icons, and the ridiculous amount of bloatware. So IMO the solution of installing a custom ROM (or non-AT&T stock rooted) is by far preferred.
Either way, you need to install custom recovery to either root or install custom ROMs. It sounds like you have some basic, fundamental learning to do before doing any of these things to your device. Neglect to do so, can result in permanent damage to your phone. I would second timmaaa's advice and read up the resource threads:

Rooted, now installing a rom

Hey guys converter from iPhone over here. Last time I rooted it was fairly straightforward and was able to get going quickly. This newer stuff is a little new to me.
I rooted my sprint s5 using towel root. Now what? I see roms like omega but none really say anything about the sprint model.
What should i do next to install a boottloader then a rom?
Thanks

Assuming you are a new XDA user. Welcome to the forum and be sure to read over the forum rules. They might save you some headache in the future. For example, this post should of been in the Q&A section but no biggie. A mod will move it if need be.
Anyways, about your question, this is the Sprint specific forum so all the roms here should be compatible with the Sprint S5 (900P). Some of the roms will be based off of Touchwiz (these will keep almost 100% of stock functionality while adding some extras) and AOSP roms (custom based on CM, MIUI, etc.) The first post of each rom thread will give you a good idea of what the rom has included, instructions to flash, what works and doesn't, and so on.
If you just rooted get a custom recovery on there and do a backup of the system and EFS first thing. As for bootloader, that is preference and may depend on what rom you flash but I would think you will be fine with what version you have now.
This is also a good thread to take a look at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52456762&postcount=1

Samsung Note 2, I want it secured, lightweight, and fast.

Hey Ya'll
Happy New Year.
I have new old phone Samsung Note 2.
I'm going to be using this phone but have concerns about security and speed .
I also want to root my phone so I can remove the bloatware and, possibly, get my processor clocked a bit faster (activating the reduntant cores to would be great).
This is what I've learned from searching here:
1) KIngRoot || Root King - oneclick apps from the play store
2) custom rom - like cynagenmod.
- i'll be able to use FireFox the way I do on my Linux machine, but other than that I'm just a run of the mill iPhone user.
What kind of advice do you guys have for me? I look forward to learning tx:fingers-crossed:
For the people viewing but not posting.
Here's something I found using a DuckDuckGo (XDA search just came up with ads) from the XDA forums.
Galaxy Note 2 Rooting.
Flashing Custom Roms.
After days of trying to figure this out I'm just more confused.
Everytime I use the XDA search bar I get ADS. Thanks XDA.
The two links I posted to help here have good descriptions but the links end up going nowhere eventually.
From what I've gathered (on my own) I need to:
1) Root using Odin (found it somewhere else)
2 ) Download a "Custom Recovery" CWM/TWRP (can't find a good download for the dam thing)
3) Download Gapps (again, can't find a good Download for the dam thing)
4) Download a Custom ROM for my phone (and again, can't find a download)
I don't understand. Everyone Raves about XDA but theres only text instructions. Everyone says how there are great developers here and how this is a gret forum but I've yet to find anything here and none of the people who viewed this post even replied....
If your reading this and are trying to Root your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 I suggest you look somewhere else.
I don't think XDA is worth any of the hype people give it and we're just wasting our time here.
Hey, there.
First of all, you are new here and don't know how the XDA forums work, so be patient and don't jump to conclusions. Once you understand the forum's layout, you will see why everyone raves about XDA.
You first need to find your phone's subforum using search, and look there. It will have everything from general questions, rooting guides, to custom kernels, custom Roms, etc.
For your case, it's here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-2
Easiest way to root your phone is using Kingroot.
Download apk here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=22115
The custom ROM flashing guide you linked is general guide to flash any ROM and hence doesn't provide links. You need to find Rom you would like to flash(install) in the sub-forum and flash using that method.
Hit thanks if it helped. PM (private message) me if you need help.
