Is there a way to create an icon on my home screen, that when tapped, would act as a shortcut and open up a widget, such as a calendar widget?

Like what widget? You can add a widget to your homescreen by long press on the home screen. The menu will pop up and you can select from the widgets you have... you can also create a shortcut to any app by the same long press and selecting shortcuts...

If you're opening up something its an activity/app not a widget. You don't open a widget a widget opens an app.
I think OP is talking about having a shortcut that applies a widget to the home screen. I find that this would be useful if you say had a backup of your homescreen. Whenever I load a backup of a homescreen configuration I had, the widgets would always say "problem loading widget." The backup only restores shortcuts and placements. So this would save you from having to delete and readd widgets.
I have 2 suggestions.
Power Strip
https://market.android.com/details?id=mobi.intuitit.android.p.powerstrip&feature=search_result
or Quickdesk Beta/Pro
https://market.android.com/details?id=sg.ruqqq.quickdesk&feature=search_result
I use them both. here's a brief run down of how they each work
Power strip - it's a bar along the bottom of the screen with buttons for access to all your installed applications, shortcuts, widgets and whatever else you can figure out to put in it. i LOVE IT. It's 2 bux, but WELL worth the cost IMO. you can assign it to your home button or the hold search key (i use the home button for quick and easy access) but you can stuff as many widgets in there are you want and THEN SOME.. it's awesome! PLUS.. you can set it up to launch in ANY APP. say you're in maps.. but o snaps.. you forgot to turn on the wifi.. hold search and up comes powerstrip without even leaving maps.. you have your settings widget on the bar.. open it up.. tap the wifi button. slap the back key to exit powerstrip and voila.
Quickdesk - think if it as ONE of the panels from you homescreen. It's just one page that you can put widgets on.. on shortcoming... no scrolling widgets with this one. but likewise it can be accessed anywhere without leaving whatver app you're in.
These are both GREAT choices and i use them both... powerstrip is DEFINITELY the more flexible of the two though.

Ok just to confirm, a lot Widgets CANNOT be activated without being as widgets on the main screen. However, in launcher pro (not sure about other launchers), if you hard press and select "shortcuts">"application" then select the widgets (if u see any) that u like. It will also give u an option to customize the icon of your choice. This is one way to activate a widget by simply clicking the icon. Hope I helped.

Hi,
Attaching scripts for Tasker app (https://market.android.com/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm) for toggling Honeycomb Statusbar appearance on Asus Transformer.
Please note that these scripts require Superuser access (therefore will work with rooted devices only)
Follow the following steps to create Statusbar widget toggle:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Unzip the attached file into: "/sdcard/Tasker/tasks/" folder on your Transformer (create the "tasks" folder if it is not created already)
2. Open Tasker application
3. Goto: Settings Menu -> Profile Data -> Import One Task
4. Import "StatusBar_Hide", "StatusBar_Show", "StatusBarToggle" tasks by repeating step 3
5. Goto your prefered home screen
6. Add widget -> Task
7. Select "StatusBarToggle", press "V" in the next dialog to finish
The created widget will toggle StatusBar visibility on each click and will change the widget icon accordingly.
You can also use the attached scripts to hide status bar before invocation of selected applications and returning the status bar back after exiting the application:
1. Follow steps 1-4 from the above sequence
2. Add new profile in Tasker, name it "Apps with Hidden Statusbar":
2.1 Select "Application" context
2.2 Mark all the application you want to use without statusbar (for example i use it for "MoboPlayer" video app and some games)
2.3 Press "V" and Task selection menu will appear
2.4 Select "StatusBar Hide" task
2.5 Press again on created "StatusBar Hide" task and select "Add Exit Task"
2.6 Select "StatusBar Show" for exit task
2.7 Exit Tasker to apply the scripts
Big thanks to ppareit and his "HideBar" app sources (https://github.com/ppareit/HideBar) that i used to create these scripts.
Happy Taskering
when the widget hides the bar, how do I get it back from withun the opened app? Does flicker work or do I have to somehow get back to desktop to click the widget again?

This widget is indeed useful only with apps that you can exit explicitly from within the app (like most of the games and some other apps) or if you always have the docking with you (like i do).
If you want more complete solution you can take a look at HideBar application (
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265860&highlight=hidebar). The downside that this application always run in the background. My script just hides/shows the statusbar without running service in the background for gesture catching.

Thanks for this...really useful. Another solution is to install something like swipepad which will let you move from app to app.
Anyone else been using any other tasker profiles? All I have so far is having headphones mute my notification volume and auto-airplane mode when the screen is off.
Hello, I just installed the ICS Version on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Unfortunately the mentioned tasks does not work? Is there any adjustment I can make to make does takes workable under ICS as well?
Thank a lot for your support!
First of all, I'm not a developer. I'm just here to show a little trick I found to make your daily usage faster and more convenience. And this is my really first thread, please give me some suggestions to make my thread better, thanks!!
As the title of the thread showed, I'm going to introduce you 2 very famous apps which are SwipePad and Launcher Pro (nope, I'm not asking you to change your launcher, keep read it and you'll know ;p)
In fact, I'm not only here to recommend, but combining functions of the two apps and make it both better!!
If you used to be a Launcher Pro user, you should know there are a very useful shortcut/widget in it, which called Activity. (well, it is shortcut in prior ICS and widget in ICS and JB). With this Activity, you can just add a shortcut to a specific process of an app right to your home screen. Means that you may just go to the activity without entering the app, and click tons of button to reach it. For example, linking the shortcut to the Memory Usage under the Setting section, will bring you to the Ram Usage page with one click.
And here is the trick, I'm a frequent user of Dictionary in my phone. And the YouDao Dict is my most favourite apps, so by using the SwipePad and Activity shortcut of the Launcher Pro, I add a shortcut of the QuickDict Activity(com.youdao.dict.activity.QuickDictActivity) into the SwipePad. And I can access to the dictionary with just a swipe and release, in anywhere!!
Of course, this is just an example of using it, there are a tons of activities under the each application you installed to your phone. Look for the apps you use the most and find a make sense activity that seems useful to you and try it.
And the most important part, the apps is both free and you may just use the functions I mentioned without buying any add-on.
PS: Hit thanks if you find this useful. Thanks:cyclops:
Nova and Apex launchers have the activity shortcuts as well.
oh really?
should give them a try shortly.
I believe Holo Launcher allows activity shortcuts as well...

anycut is available on play store? Tried searching anycut in play store but could not find it. I am using "direct cut" app which is for creating and organizing direct dial/message and email shortcuts.
LauncherPro was abandoned by its developer a year and a half ago. I wouldn't even know what the best Android 2.x style launcher is right now, but I don't particularly care for them. Holo Launcher works on Gingerbread, and I have Nova Prime for when I'm on Jelly Bean. Both do shortcuts. Shortcuts to app activities, contacts, individual settings pages, etc. If you have SoundHound (free, or paid) you can create a shortcut to "ID Now". Don't go into SoundHound, it's in the top-level shortcuts. I just have that, rather than the app, in my music folder. But I think the shortcut thing isn't a launcher feature; I believe it's actually an Android feature. Is that incorrect? Can you not create shortcuts in any Android version's stock launcher, or the mods like TouchWiz, Blur, etc.? In other words, it's not a premium feature, it's just a feature.

yeah I put a "ID Now" shortcut in my SwipePad List as well!!
But half of the list of SwipePad are linked to direct call. Haha
No I don't think TouchWiz and Blur has it cause I once uninstall Launcher Pro from my phone and I couldn't find Activities shortcut from anywhere.
Btw, putting Clipper+ on the SwipePad is useful too.. No need to insert my email again and again. Oh ya, neither my home address.

how do you add the shortcut to SwipePad? I created a shortcut to activity but couldnot find a way to add it to SwipePad
just swipe to the portal you want and hold until you see it turn orange colour, then choose Shortcuts -> Activities -> and choose whatever activity you want and you're done
but there is no activity or shortcut that I created before using launcher. there are just few activities, not as much as I see when use launcher
yeah i'm using swipepad too, its a great app for shortcut.

do you have launcher pro, nova launcher or apex launcher install in your phone?
you can still using your default launcher, you just need either one of these launcher mentioned to be install in your phone in order to use the feature that i said.
i use Adw launcher. I can create shortcut to activity using Adw launcher. However, I cant assign this shortcut to swipepad
hmm...it's a different "shortcut" we're referring to.
for that i cant help out, coz SwipePad has its own shortcut and not support other launcher's shortcut.
and the shortcut we're talking about is separate thing, which are more specifically named Activities.
Here you go the screenshot.

Hi,
The Halo multiwindow feature from ParanoidAndroid allows the System to open up any app in a floating window. However there are few alternative ways to launch an app in the multiwindow except for the original Halo bubble.
For people using tools like sidebars or similar applications, there's no option to do that.
That's why I developed the app HaloShortcut. My app allows you to create a shortcut that opens every app in the floating window provided by the Halo feature.
There's an app with similar functions called HaloShortcuts, which you should definitely try out. It comes with an additional search feature and most importantly, it's open source,
HaloShortcuts:
Provides a shortcut for every app/activity that will then start in a multiwindow
The Blacklist feature allows you to control whether an app starts in multi window depending on the currently used app
Doesn't appear in your home launcher nor does it run in the background at any moment
NEW Feature:
(Also works with the XHaloFloatingWindow XPosed extension)
Further information about the Halo project:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/paranoid-android-team-open-sources-halo/
Changelog;
Version 3.2: Fixed Blacklist
Version 3.0: Complete new UI and added Blacklist Feature
Version 2.1: Shortcut labels now show correct name
Version 2.0: Shortcut support
Version 1.0: First release

Very cool, very handy. Thank you.
Good good , thanks

Is it possible to update this app to create shortcuts that point to "Shortcuts" in Android as well instead of just app shortcuts?
You know, the screen when u long press on the launcher and you get this page to create direct shortcuts to contacts, bookmarks, gmail labels etc.
Because it would be handy to create shortcuts that link to specific functions inside apps instead of having to launch the apps in windows mode and then navigating to the required functions i.e. shortcut to a specific whatsapp contact, specific settings screen.
Do consider it, or if anyone has a solution do let me know, thanks!

Hey, I implemented the requested feature, thanks for the support :good:
Hi , this app somehow is not working on my Xperia Z, running android 4.3
i cant see the app icon ANYWHERE in the phone, so cannot create a halo shortcut.
i tried the other halo shortcut you suggested at #1, that one only creates a shortcut on the home screen, so that's not too useful (i want to create a halo shortcut on notification bar)
Thanks
Works great! Thank you!
I like it! Great app

Hey, this app won't show up in any launcher, because that wouldn't make sense at all. But you should be able to access it from a popup dialog whenever you want to add a shortcut to something.
So in your app that makes the notification bar shortcuts, you have to select shortcuts and than select "HaloShortcut".
If you still have problems, tell me the name of the app that you are using and i'll see how to get it done

Hi,I've finally found the option, it is under "Bookmark" (not "App") when creating the halo shortcuts.
It is working if i create a desktop shortcut to open app with halo, but currently it doesn't work with this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.nicolai.buch.andersen.ns&hl=en
which i try to add the halo shortcut to the notification bar, the app opens as normal.
Thanks
sorry

Hey, I tried the app and for me it worked flawlessly, so I can't tell you what the problem is
(I use the xposed halo module)
great work:good::good::good::good:
Works good for me so far with xHalo. All the possibilities are great. Thanks for the app.
Thanks fot your app.
But it doesnt work with XHFW3. (Xhalofloating window 3.16)
http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.zst.xposed.halo.floatingwindow3
XHFW3 works with Android6.
Could you make it suitable with XHFW3?
Thank you.
Hey
I just installed stable CM7.2 (android 2.3.7) on my Defy (jordan) and it looks great, but there's one thing I'm way to used too that's gone: pressing the home button when already on the middle desktop screen used to open the app drawer on the stock rom, which was great.
I couldn't find any way to add that back, but I found Home2 Shortcut, which allow to bind something to a double tap on home, which would be fine too. But I can only bind an application or a shortcut, and "Open App Drawer" is in neither of those (despite being in Add > Launcher Actions on the home screen). There's even stuff like "CyanogenMod Settings", but no "Launcher Actions".
Is there a way to add it to the Shortcuts list? Or any other way to do it?
Alternatively, I can also bind it to a file. Is there a file that launch the App Drawer when opened? Or a script file I can write to do that?
Thanks
Edit: I installed MIUI App Drawer and bound that to Home2 Shortcut.
