After installing the kernel you have to flash a custom ROM(Cyanogen Mod and others...).
You can use adb to push the ROM into your sdcard and then flash it using recovery.
Just search some guides here in xda, I know there's some here.

First of all,
I updated to 4.0.3
then i would like to root my phone..
I used a guide found on the nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-root/how-to-root-nexus-s-or-nexus-s-4g-on-ics-or-gingerbread/ and then i installed rom manager free from market and i tried flashing cwm recovery inside rom manager.
But rom manager was fc and i decided to google it to find an other way to install cwm recovery.
Then i found this guide nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-hacks/how-to-force-your-nexus-s-into-clockworkmod-recovery/ and i followed this exactly, hoping that it could be easy to flash the new 4.0.3 rom again.
When i try to open bootloader mode and select recovery a sparking android is showing up an then only the lights from the touch keys are glowing.!
When i press either (Vol- and Power) or Power Clockwork Mod recovery shows up and when i try to install zip from sd it shows status 7 installation aborted. I searched forums that proposed to wipe all data and dalwik data.
I did all these and also status7 shows up every time i try to flash a rom.
I ask for your help!!!
updated your cwm recovery to 5.x.x.x. and dont expect help or no one will help, ask for help instead.
you are right i wrote by mistake.

I suggest you to download the stock gingerbread for your model from Rom Manager and install it as update.zip. That will unroot your phone. So root it again and try flashing new roms (cm9 or ICS). You should flash kernel after flashing the rom.

Hi Everyone,
Im new here and new at using an android phone with ICS.(used to be an iphone user)
The battery life is just horrible. I want to install the ROM by peter alfonso.
My question is do i need to root before installing a ROM?
If so, how to?
Thanks,
johnnski
no, you dont need to root before installing custom roms. but you do need to unluck your bootloader and flash a custom recovery(like cwm or twrp). when you do flash peters rom, youll get root too. his rom has the superuser binaries.
No, you can just flash clockwork mod recovery through fast boot and then flash a pre rooted rom.
Sorted.
You need to unlock your boot loader alright tho and that will wipe your phone, SD card and everything!! Be warned!!
Open command prompt in windows and type on fastboot OEM unlock and unlock the bootloader.
then fastboot flash recovery xxxxx.img (xxxx.img is the name of the recovery you download, most likely cwm5.0.2.0.img)
You'll find it in the forums. Search for it.
the ease is a plus of owning a nexus device
thanks for all your help guys. i was able to flash alfonso's rom successfully, i think.
in the about phone menu, it says 3.0.8+ [email protected] #1, and there's a super user installed on my phone.
But it's the same look as the original ICS. i thought it would have a different look. I dnt know, lol. sorry newbie.
Did i do this correctly?
Yup.

If it boots you're in the green
If it's not stable, you may just need to wipe and reflash if you didn't do so. You'll probably just want to do a data/factory reset and format /system.

Ya that all seems fine. Congratulations!
Be careful not to get addicted and become a crackflasher!!
If you feel brave you can try flashing custom kernels or even other roms!
Pete's is as close to stock as you can get really, he just makes stable stock roms and kernels.
Gummynexs a nice rom. Customisable too and cyanogenmod style power menu.
Matr1x v15.0 is a good kernel too. Has all the features available
Just boot into recovery and wipe dalvik cache and flash the kernel.
Thanks guys. although im having issues with synching. it won't sync to twitter or facebook. i do not get background updates.
After getting ics on my stock tf101 I used viper mod 4.5 option 1 and it workedfine.being a noob I tried to use Rom manager clicked on flash clockwork recovery it recognized my tf101 ..then it said not supported then it asked if it was manually installed using 2x or 3x.don't know what it means but tried both versions trying to reboot into recovery to flash a new ROM didn't work on either version.is there a way to flash?or do I have to unroot. Viper mod which kept ics stock but rooted.(from my understanding) or is there a new ROM manager for ics ? Am familiar with Rom manager flashing my bolt several times.or should I just do option 2 unroot and forget flashing.or downgrade to honeycomb and install Rom manager there?

w/o sounding like a 8===) look in the Apps section, there is a .apk that you can download and use to flash the recovery image. Clockwork ROM manager isn't really needed for this device, in fact i don't have the app installed on any of my rooted devices.

Actually last I heard Koush pulled the RM for the TF as too many peoples had problems. Like neidlinger stated, you don't need ROM manager. I got rid of mine even for phone long ago. Everything can be done in CWM recovery itself
Hello to all respected members
i have a problem... i read all threads and tutorials on rooting nexus s GT19023 but still no success ...
i bought this phone yesterday so I'm new to this... hope someone kind will explain the details to me ...
bootloader status says : unlocked
but still no root on 4.04
clockmod recovery is installed... so another question
can i install custom rom using clockmod recovery without root access? if possible, then after installing custom ICS rom it will then be rooted>?
thanks in advance for all those who took time in helping me root ICS 4.04 stock rom... i really need root access on this rom... i hope i can install custom rom with cm recovery then have root with custom rom
since im new to this, please suggest the best rom and kernel to use i'm open to suggestions
thanks
if you want your phone rooted, flash this in CWM:
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
then, in app drawer should has Superuser icon.
In other way, if you flash custom rom, it's already rooted, so you don't have to flash that file above again...
thanks savantist ... i flashed custom rom and its working awesome... rooted + kernel... thanks for the reply thread is solved
I'm about to root my nexus s for the first time. I'm running Android 4.04. Quick nooby question..will I lose the contacts n data on my phone memory if I root by flashing that superuser file with CWM recovery..If yes then is there a way to create a NAND backup prior to rooting my device.
Thanks a lot for putting up with my nooby question. Pls help!!!

Flash CWM from fastboot
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img
Place the ClockworkMod Recovery Image in the same folder as fastboot (the /tools folder with the Android SDK folder). Power the Nexus S down, and hold Volume Up & the Power button until booted into the bootloader. Connect the Nexus S to the computer via USB. On the computer, open terminal and run:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img
The ClockworkMod Recovery should now be installed on the Nexus S.
After that boot into recovery using volume up + power button, then selecting recovery. Now in CWM flash
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Reboot and you have root again.
PRAISE the lord! I have been to 7 different sites and followed their instructions to the letter and no ROOT.... I finally found this post and the signed Super user did the trick THANKS SO MUCH!
FINALLY!
Hey everyone,
I just rooted my WT19i and unlocked bootloader. Because I'm absolutely new in custom ROMs I need your advice helping me to decide which of them I should install on my device. Which is the best?
BTW I already tried installing CM9 using ROM manager, but it said "Installing update..." , then the device rebooted ant stuck on "Sony Ericsson" logo... I had to flash firmware and root my phone again...

ROMs for this phone are buggy if you want one with all features working even walkman button try Hibroman (just ask for a link to download)
if you have unlocked bootloader you can see kernels like rage kernel with cpu governors this will increase/improve battery !
It's better to use phone-specific methods for flashing than ROM Manager (some got trouble by this way)
when flashing a ROM that requests to change bootloader be sure to flash it using a laptop on battery -it's better to protect from power problems if something is wrong when flashing bootloader your phone is bricked and only service tools can revive it !
never flash ROMs/ kernels not made for your phone -you are to experiment a hardware failure !

Thanks! I guess I'll try installing this ROM and kernel when I have enough time. And two more questions: if I flashed another firmware my bootloader will be locked again and which version of Hybroman should I use?

nope your bootloader is not touched by flashing a custom ROM
indeed in some cases you have to flash separately a different bootloader so you can use that custom rom (in fact the problem is that bootloader will not give a chance to that kernel to load into memory -it's about a kind of protection)
wich version ? well as you see that thread is a very long one (and that's a sign of a good one ..) but no links in first post but just ask them your question and you get a link surely
try real ics 5.1 with krsh kernel... its really nice on my wt19i
Did u wipe custom data and cache....???
Did u flash the .img file???
If u didn't then ur phone gets stuck at SE logo...
CM9 is ICS based so first
1. flash ICS
2. flash boot.img file (instde cm-9.0.0-coconut.zip)
3. Enter recovery (turn off ur phone and turn it on by pressing volume down key.)
4. wipe custom data and device cache
5. install cm-9.0.0-coconut.zip
6. reboot...
Ur CM9 will work
