[Q] TWRP Causes System update and fails - Asus Transformer TF700

I have searched through multiple threads regarding TWRP and upgrading to ChromiX 5 but haven't found anyone running into this issue. Disclaimer this is my first time unlocking/rooting a device.
I have an Asus TF700T that has been unlocked, because of the software version (10.6.1.14.10) rooting doesn't work via Motochopper. However, based on the thread I can still load a ROM without rooting b/c i unlocked. I have loaded GooManager and installed the recovery script, but when i try to reboot into recovery mode instead of TWRP opening I get the Android system update screen and then a dead droid with the red triangle and failure. I have the Chromi X-5 on a separate SD card so i don't think that is contributing to the failure. Am i missing a basic step that seems common sense? I'm lost here.

Follow up on this, i did find a related post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797692&page=4 where it looks like TWRP isn't actually installing (guessing b/c 10.6.1.14.10 can't be rooted?). I've followed the directions installed GooManager and see the blob in my internal storage.

You need root to install TWRP with GooManager. That's why this method does not work for you.
Go to the OP of the CROMI-X thread, sbdags just revised the instructions and the steps are easy to follow.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2425383
You can use Scott's tool to install TWRP (download link is in that thread) and then flash CROMi-X from TWRP.

That appears to have tried to install, but after the loading bar turns blue it almost seems like it doesn't finish. I have 2 probably really stupid and extremely nooby questions:
1. Should I have a root app or TWRP on it after doing this?
2. Should I be able to use GooManager after running this tool?
EDIT: Now i realize i was able to fastboot into TWRP after running that, sorry Noob level failure right here

[Q] Noob question: sequence of unlock, root, brickproof, JB ota

Hello,
I am getting a tf700 at the end of the month. I've been reading a lot of different posts about rooting, unlocking, updating to JB, etc...
What I want is to make sure I have the sequence of events correct so I can avoid any unnecessary headaches...
At the end of day 1 with my tablet I would like to have a Rooted + Unlocked device running the official Jelly Bean release AND have a full backup created using the NVflash tool found here.
Please let me know if I have the correct sequence:
1: Unlock device using the official ASUS tool
2: Create backup using the NVflash tool
3: Root device using DebugFS
4: Install SuperSU + TWRP recovery (using goomanager) + Rootkeeper
5: flash official JB update found on asus site.
Have I got it?
Thanks in advance!
i dont think you have to install supersu. If you plan to install cleanrom, it will already be there.
also, once you get your device and boot it up, jelly Bean should start to install on its own.
After the installation, then follow the steps you listed. But instead of installing the JB rom from the asus site, you can go to the development section for the tf700 and grab a rom from there.
put the rom on a microsd card formatted at fat32. reboot into recovery (hold power button and volume down until you get to the recovery screen. Choose recover (by pressing volume up) and go to your microsd and find the zip file to install.

Well be careful and If you intend to use NvFlash STAY AWAY from the 9.4.5.30 UPDATE or anything higher.
Read here ->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1833212
And welcome to the club
.
Thank you for your reply.
I didn't realize that I wouldn't have a choice about the OTA JB update on my new device. If my tablet automatically updates to JB, I'll have to use a different method for rooting (debugfs only works with ICS). That's no problem, but in order to create a backup with the NVFlash tool, I need firmware that is PRE 9.4.5.30.
So, I may not be able to create a NVFlash backup....
Is this correct?

Easy Guide to Unlock, Root, and Flash ROM?

Hey guys, I just unlocked and flashed ROM on my LG Optimus G phone and looking to do the same with the TFT300T.
I did read some of the stickies, and there are various ways of doing this.
Anyone recently unlock, root, and install ROM on your TF300T? Which directions did you take? I am looking for the simplest and user friendly solutions. Any tips are much appreciated.
Thanks
What rom/ android version are you currently running?
I am on 4.2.1
First off you need to go to Asus support site and download the v8 unlock apk & run it (unlocking your bootloader).
Then have a good read here to learn how to flash the compatible TWRP custom recovery (2.4.4.0), the root your device.
As of know I don't know about any custom roms that will boot with the newest bootloader. Correct me if I'm wrong here.
Do have a good read though, and read it again - and make sure you understand it and then read some again. Then proceed by following the steps to the letter.
Have fun! :good:
Can I just download an older unlock apk if the current ROMs don't run with the v8 unlock?
No. If you updated to 4.2.1 you need to use the v8 apk.

Got it. So if I am on 4.2.1, there's no ROM that I can flash? Just want to get that absolutely correct.
Not that I'm aware of at this point. The new bootloader uses a different partition layout than the "older" 4.1 ones, so it will soft brick (as will flashing the wrong recovery, you'll want the latest twrp 2.4.4.0)
Thanks. That's really good to know.
So at this point, for anyone on the OTA 4.2.1, we can unlock and root but cannot install any kernels or ROMs yet, correct? Anyone know if CleanROM is being updated to work for us yet?
I think you can try this ROM.
Thanks, I had a look at that. I'm having a hard time figuring out which set of "instructions" to use. The ones on the OP:
Code:
Installation instructions:
- Unlock your device using the Asus supplied APK. Search around the forum for the official unlocking app.
- Install a custom recovery such as TWRP. Follow the instructions in the TWRP thread (website)
- Copy over the ROM zip to your Internal Storage or your microsd card
- Boot into recovery and simply install the ROM. This ROM will NOT wipe your current ROM settings
- Enjoy!
Or at the bottom of post #3 (where it seems to have the download links) it says "BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL ANYTHING IN THE JB 4.2.1 folder BELOW CLICK THIS LINK FOR INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS!"
Which then gives you this set of instructions:
Code:
The stock ROM is uploading in the JB 4.2.1 subfolder of the main download folder on the first page..
Be warned that once you do this... you will not be able to simply restore your backup and go back to 4.1.1. You will need to flash the JB bootloader ( think craig gomez has a package for it) and repartition your tablet. So be ready to STAY on 4.2.1
Instructions:
1. Make a full backup of your internal storage and copy it over to your computer after. Do a "nandroid" or "backup" in TWRP and copy the resulting folder/files to your computer (if you want a backup...)
2. Download and copy the Energy_JB_4.2.1_Partitions.zip to your tab.
3. Reboot into recovery and flash the above mentioned file. Reboot.
4. Wait while the blue line at the bottom is doing its thing. At the top you should see a "signature match" message. This WILL WIPE YOUR INTERNAL STORAGE. Which is why I recommend a backup!
5. At this point the tablet will NOT boot. You need to manually reboot and get back into recovery. Hold power and volume down and choose "RCK".
6. Either using an sdcard or adb, copy over the actual ROM zip Energy.TF201.JB.03.15.2013.STOCK.zip and flash it! Reboot... and... Enjoy.
Having started on the OTA 4.2.1, I can't figure out what I need to do here. Do I require the Partitions.zip, or am I already set with that having installed 4.2.1 prior? Conflicting sets of instructions are bad...

Sbdags is working on it and has made some great progress. He's got it figured out where we are gonna be able to flash the bootloader, kernel, and custom recovery all at one time. From what I've read, I have a feeling a release is coming pretty soon.
Just keep up with the thread and you'll be good to go.

I tried several ROMs and this was the only one I was able to get to work.

I have been having lag issues since the OTA upgrade to 4.2.1 and figured putting a custom ROM on the TF300T might help things out. Glad I came in here. I had unlocked it via the ASUS website: http://www.service.asus.com/#!downloads/c1wax
So what else can u do with unlock?

[Q] Temporarily bricked after trying to boot into CWM

I just got my TF700 the other day. I was able to downgrade to .30, root, and unlock the bootloader without incident. I just pushed CWM per this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31556045&postcount=1. I tried booting into CWM, got the standard quick vibration but the tablet was dead after that. I messed around for a while and finally after holding the power button several times in a row, it booted as normal. Battery is at 80%
Before I go any further, what just happened? Can I push CWM again the same way to re-install it? How should I proceed?
FWIW, the checksum for download 1 on the page mentioned only matched the checksum for #2. I used #2 because it matched its MD5 as it was listed on the page.

The proper way to do this is to upgrade to the latest stock JB (10.4.4.25), unlock, and you can either fastboot the recovery or unlock it be flashing Superuser. It is not advised to downgrade, even if it seems easier, because if you do it the way I stated, everything will be latest and should not have any problems whatsoever. since you downgraded to ICS, you now have a ICS bootloader. an ICS bootloader will not boot JB, nor vice versa. so now you will need to flash a JB bootloader, which will not boot the stock ICS, so you will now need Cromi, Cyanogen,or another custom rom to get it update with JB. Make sure you have them preinstalled on a SDcard before doing any more flashing.
If I am wrong, hopefully someone will correct me.

The writeups I had seen prior unlocking said to downgrade to .30...so I did. I am still sitting on .30 and am planning on installing CM 10.1 which I have on both the TF700 internal and an external SD card. The only problem is what I mentioned above where my device wouldn't boot into CWM and subsequently locked up for about 15 min. Should I upgrade to JB .25 prior to booting into CWM and installing CM 10.1?

I CM10.1 requires the JB bootloader, If you install CM on the ICS it wont boot. I dont see why the recovery is the problem. I would try updating to JB bootloader, use the zips in Cromi's second post, and then try installing Cromi. Downgrading is only recommended if you want to stay on a locked bootloader. Otherwise, you should flash the root.then install recovery, or simply fastboot it.
In order to install CM you will need to update the bootloader, then once it is updated you will not be able to boot into the ICS rom, so you will have to already have CM10.1, also dont forget google apps, so it can be flash afterwards.
IF CM is installed with the ICS boot loader it will just not boot, it will go into recovery but that is it. I dont see any probability in bricking your device. But I am only a newb, so you may wanna wait for another's input.

Or you could install the 10.4.4.25 stock, then just fastboot a recovery. I mistakenly said root with zip, you cant without custom recovery so scratch that, the only way to install custom recovery via the method I gave is fastboot. Or the way you did so, but that requires more steps and upgrades. Also greater chance of bricking. This is because of the incompatibility of the rom, boot loader, and recovery. If you have latest recovery,I would install the bootloader, then flash CM10.1 + Gapps and should be good to go.

Just remember for future reference, keep things up to date,or at least compatible with one another or you will run into trouble later. The #1 reason for tf700's bricking software wise is people do not update their bootloader as they update their recovery. Just keep things recent and you should have not a problem.

[Q] Root, Custom Roms, Unlock on Asus TF700T

Hello,
i was wondering if someone could answer some questions that i have about android and the asus tf700t.
now i already searched on google and on xda but there are so many informations and i just cant tell which one is the "best" or the right one.
My Asus is unlocked. i got that far and didnt think it would be too hard to root but i see command lines and/or 3 different kinds of software or files that i have to download first or programs like unlockroot etc.
so i was wondering if you could answer me a few questions.
1. do i need to root to put on a custom rom or is it enough that the device is unlocked?
2. what is the easiest and safest way to root?
3. what are 3 good custom roms?
i have android 4.1.1 on my asus and heard that 4.2 is out so i would like to update it but i never had an android device until now so i just want to make sure i m not destroying it after 3 months of use.
Thank you very much
Ben
Custom ROMS are pre rooted, usually, so you best bet would:
1. Update to stock 4.2.1
2. Root using Motochopper
3. Download GooManager(give root rights') from Play Store and Install TWRP by installing open script recovery.
4. Perform a factory reset via TWRP, without wiping Internal storage, or MicroSD card.
5. Install CromiX or CyanogenMod
There are other ROMS out there, but it is advised to install CromiX first because it is stock based and can be flashed over the stock ROM.
Also, make sure you know how to get into the recovery manually, and make sure you check files before flashing to make sure things downloaded properly.

Asus pulled the JB 4.2.1 firmware off their website, probably because they realized it had too many bugs. They probably are working on a new release and I would wait for it.
In the meantime read the forums and familiarize yourself with the process of rooting, installing a custom recovery and flashing custom roms.
If you don't want to wait, search for the forums on the Motochopper tool. I believe you can also use it to gain root under 4.1, but I'm not 100% sure.
If you have root, download Goo Manager, tap the 3 dots in the upper right and choose: Install open recovery script.
This will install the TWRP 2.5.0 custom recovery.
Boot into TWRP and select 'Backup'. This will give you a nandroid backup of your current system. Copy it to a safe place.
Next, you still being on 4.1, you need to flash the JB 4.2 bootloader which is version 10.6.1.14.4. You'll find a link in post 1 of the Cromi Xenogenesis thread in the development section. The dev packaged it with TWRP 2.5. It doesn't hurt to re-install TWRP.
Also download the latest release of the Cromi-X (ODEX) ROM, currently 4.4.1, and place both zips into the root of your internal or external SD card (your choice).
Boot into recovery, choose 'Install', navigate to the 10.6.1.14.4 bootloader/TWRP zip you downloaded and swipe to flash it. After installation the tablet will reboot into your old rom - this is fine.
At this point, just to be safe, you may want to check if you have the correct bootloader installed: Boot up with Vol Down and Power button and read the tiny script. It gives you the bootloader version.
If you're 100% sure you have the correct bootloader and TWRP 2.5.0, proceed:
Boot into TWRP recovery again, select Install, select the CROMIX 4.4.1 zip and flash it.
The Aroma installer will start and give you options to choose from. Stick with most of the default options for the beginning. You can always re-flash the rom with a different set of options selected.
Enjoy!

The safest method is to download the latest firmware from asus extract it and flash the .zip with trwp, from here it will overwrite twrp after you reboot so set up android 4.2 and then reboot go into fastboot and fastboot flash twrp 2.5 from there you can flash what ever 4.2 rom/kernel you desire

If you liked Cromi, you will love CROMi-X, the JB 4.2 based successor to Cromi roms.
Boot into TWRP and make a nandroid backup - just in case.
Backup your files, pics, videos to your PC or a SD card - just in case.
Go to the CROMi-X thread, download the 10.6.1.14.8 bootloader/TWRP 2.5 package, flash it and boot back into your old Cromi rom once.
Boot back into TWRP (which should be 2.5 at this point), choose 'Wipe', swipe to do a factory reset (highly recommended if you move from 4.1 to 4.2 since 4.2 file system is quite different from 4.1)
Flash CROMi-X 4.7 - enjoy!
You will probably find all your files, pictures etc on this clean installation anyway since a factory reset in TWRP leaves the data/media folder untouched, but backing them up is just good computing practice.

+1 this is the safest method, but once you have the latest Asus software installed use motochopper to root then use Goo Manager to install the latest twrp which is v2.6.0.0.

I do not see a reason to flash a stock rom. You loose your recovery, you loose root and have to start all over.
And I will stick with TWRP 2.5 for the time being. 2.6 has been OK for most users, but some had problems with it. And I don't take chances with my recovery - ever.

I was only helping the guy to upgrade to the new bootloader and at the same time as installing the latest Asus rom. Yes you will loose root and recovery but motochopper works so easy on a fresh install and recovery is really easy to install using Goo manager. I use this method every time an update is released and available to download from Asus support.
